The announcers
Are there two bigger dildos in the world? Would it hurt to occasionally talk about the game being played on the floor? But no! Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah!

The worst part is when we had delays and we were 10 minutes into it before they alluded to it. I mean, yeah, I kind of figured out that there was some technical issues by watching the refs going back and forth at the scorers table, but sheesh, isn't it their jobs when there's no play for a few minutes to mention why?

The Next Time We are on ESPN
I hope they hire the announcers from some place other than the Saint Louis Missouri Chamber of Commerce!

I'll cut them a little bit of slack. They aren't on-site and they are seeing the same feed we are.

At the outset the referee to Cruther as a big powerful guard. Must have never laid eyes on him before.

I heard that, too, while I was waiting for my WHIO feed to kick in, and had to laugh. Crutcher can be described with several positive adjectives, but “big” and “powerful” are not those adjectives. “Skilled”, “smooth”, “crafty”, and even “explosive”, yes. “Big” and “powerful”, ummmm, no.

I said this before, I honestly cannot think of one college basketball announcer, color or play-by-play, that I enjoy listening to on TV.

Yeah, he can definitely be annoying. But, I can’t stand Bill Walton, Dookie V, or Bill Raftery. All three of these guys have very tired acts. I cringe every time Raftery says, “Get the puppies organized!” Walton’s stoned Dead Head persona, and Dookie V’s overall obnoxiousness.

Walton has no peer when it comes to awful color commentary. If he’s doing a game, I can’t switch channels fast enough. Dakich is a blowhard. I know Dickie V. irritates people, me included with his Duke porn act, but I’ve never minded his enthusiasm for the game, and his “Dayton is legit, baybeeee” put a smile on my face last season. Raftery’s delivery has become a tired schtick.
Part of the problem is these guys want to entertain rather than inform. Bilas isn’t bad and Seth Greenberg is tolerable but I long for the days of Enberg/Packer/MaGuire. That’s going back to the Stone Age, of course, and they weren’t perfect, but you got a mix of straight commentary and humor, not to mention debate. That mix is in short supply today.

I did not watch the game last night on TV.
After coming home, I watched the NBA game between the Jazz and Clippers. Hubie Brown as doing remote color commentary. He was excellent and insightful. He spoke about the Clippers needed to do and what the Jazz needed to do constantly. He marveled at good plays by each team.
What a difference to listen to an announcer who simply calls the game, gives startegy observations and stays focused.
I looked it up and Hubie is 87 years old!

My biggest beef with any game on ESPN is the never ending promotion about future games. Focus on the game in front of you instead of the Kansas/TCU game a week from Wednesday.
Oh, and that Day-un pronunciation. Cringeworthy!

I don't follow the NBA so I'm not familiar with their commentary. But I would almost prefer that the color commentator would not do any home work and base his whole commentary on what he's observing during the game, almost like he's learning about the teams by what he observes at the moment.
I remember a few years ago, some time during the AM years, Bobby Knight did color commentating for one of our games. I don't remember Bobby being a regular commentator so it seemed like just a special assignment. His whole commentary on the game seemed to be what he was observing by the Flyers and their opponents during the game and not some pre-conceived notions based on doing research ahead of time. It was refreshing.
And what made me believe he didn't spend a lot of time doing pre-game research and some scripted "talk about this guy" demands? He would refer to the players by their number rather than their name.

It's more than just the announcers, it's the whole broadcast:
> missing plays on the court while they gab off topic
> not showing the appropriate replay. It appears there is little coordination between the camera/tape crew and the announcers.
> there is no communication between the live game and the announcers. With today's technology, you'd think they'd figure out a way to let the announcers know what's going on (e.g., why there is a delay in the game). Often, the announcers don't f/up with the results (e.g., who the foul was called on)
> it seems they don't give stats as often (point, rebounds, TOs, especially stats for individuals).

I concur with the comments above. IThe quality of the announcers performance and overall production tier seems unprofessional. just assumed that since this year’s Dayton team is not relevant, at this time. That is, not relevant unless they win the A10 tournament then the Dayton TV broadcasters selected are the leftovers. That is, announcers and production staff, not assigned to more relevant games. With poor quality resources and insufficient planning, you get an unprofessional product.

Some CT natives say Dayt..N. The ESPN announcer must be a CT native. Also there is a town in CT that they call New Brit..n.

I agree to an extent. I do want the color guy to be familiar with the players just not bog themselves down with every stat in the book about each kid and just commentate, as you say, on what is going on in this game. But I also don't like guys who you know don't even know half of the roster when they do a game.

My Dad, God rest his soul, taught me the value of the mute button. It has enhanced my college basketball viewing experience tremendously. Honest question, when was the last time you actually learned anything from those announcers?
Honest disclosure : I have listened to better understand the outside world's perspective on UD. But that's about it...

I want these guys to tell me something I don't already know, offer some insight. Former Nebraska hc Tim Miles was doing games last year, he tried to offer little nuggets of strategy insight, which I liked. Don't just talk to talk, less is better sometimes.

FWIW, here is what I think makes a good TV Broadcaster:
Call the game like you’re doing a radio broadcast or a simulcast where the audience doesn’t actually see the action.
Who is handling the ball? During fast moving action on the court, I recognize all of the players on my home team by sight without reading names and numbers on their jerseys, but not necessarily opposing players.
Whenever a whistle blows, why? Foul? Turnover? Something else?
When there is a foul, who committed it? How many on that player? How many on the team?
What defense is being played? Man? Zone? Variations of same? If zone, what kind of zone?
When subs come in, who is coming in and who is being replaced? Why?
Periodic updates on the stats for players with the most points, rebounds, assists, TOs?
Comments on in game strategy changes by coaches of both teams?

Walton and Dakich are both dreadful. Don't know how they still have jobs TBH.
Bilas doesn't bring much in the way of 'excitement' but I feel like he's a very good analyst and seems to maintain objectivity. Feel like LaPhonso Ellis and Wally Szczerbiak actually do a pretty good job on the halftime shows as well.

First thing that came to mind was listening to a baseball game on the radio. (older announcers vs. newer ones). Let the game breathe. One of my favorite Marty B expressions was his description of a pitcher. "comes to the set...let's it fly".
Any fan knew that image.

Pet Peave With Announcers/Analysts
How many times have we heard Dayton had a great defensive possession? I'm sorry but there is no such thing. It is an oxymoron. Why? Because the defense never has possession.
It is a defensive set or a defensive stop because the opponent has possession of the ball. Most announcers never get it right.
The best analysts IMHO are Brooks Hall, Bill Raftery, Jay Bilas and Dan Dakitch. When Raftery used to do UD games and Scoochie Smith scored on a banked lay-up I would have paid money to hear Raftery on the call: "and there's another smoochie from Scoochie".
