Sierra

I noticed on the roster page she is listed as bothan MB and a RS. She played some RS last year. I’ve always been impressed with her in both her freshman and sophomore years. When she has gotten court time, she has contributed. That’s all you can ask for in a young player that gets limited court time.

I think it’s a good move to train at RS. She has always been a good blocker during her limited action. t 6’3” she would have an opportunity to cause problems for our opponents’ best left side hitters.

I think to start the year, Margo, Jamie and Kendyll will be on the floor. Everything else is up for grabs and will be a battle. Even Kendyll will be pushed to keep her starting spot. It won’t matter if you made first team A-10 last year or not. Everyone will be challenged. Sierra will be one of those players that could win a starting spot at either MB or RS.

Becky.

Your comment about Margo, Jamie and Kendyll being on the floor to start the year is missing Lauren Bruns. She is by far the most significant returning kill player (first) from last year and was number 1 in blocks last year except for the two main MB's.

Is she hurt, on the outs with the coach, or has she transferred out? If none of these, who is expected to start the year on the left side, ,front row?

Lauren isn’t injured and will be one of our 3 seniors leading this team. She has always had great leadership qualities and this year I expect her to raise that part of her game and be a vocal leader.

That said, left OH is our deepest position If everyone is healthy. Over the past couple years our OHs have hit from both pins in the rotation, but those identified as left side OHs are the following:

1. Jamie Peterson - at 6’4” she has the potential to be dominate from the left side. As a freshman she added playing the backrow towards the end of the season. That’s impressive as a freshman. She was working hard in the backrow during spring her freshman year, but then got hurt. Every picture I’ve seen of her this past spring has her with passing arm bands on, which tells me she is still playing 6 rotations.

2. Mackenzie Weaver - played 6 rotations all of last year as a sophomore and also as a freshman at Syracuse.

3. Lauren Bruns - I felt she got ripped off two years ago when she was left off a post-season A10 Team. I was thrilled it was corrected this past year with a first team award. She got forced into playing 6 rotations this past year when Jess Sloan was out injured. I thought Lauren held her own in that critical situation until Sloan got back.

4. Allie Papesh - in coming freshman that graduated early and enrolled at a UD for spring to get a head start on transitioning to DI volleyball. Highly recruited OH from the Chicago area. supposed to have great backrow skills in addition to her front row skills. 6 rotation player.

5. Jordan Albarran - has played DS and serving specialist for UD the past two season. Has been behind others in front row skills, but that could have changed over spring-summer.

6. Mikaylah Van Lanen - an incoming freshman I don’t know a lot about but TH was quoted as saying she and Alli are expected to be a potent pair during their time at UD and she too can play 6 rotations.

If healthy, Jamie will be one of the two starting left OHs. The other one may come down to how well they play in the BACK ROW. We have seen zero spring and summer play to evaluate improvements, and all these players improve during this time because they work on individual areas of their position. But based on where they were at the end of last season, Mackenzie was a better 6 rotation player. I think it’s wide open between several players listed above - and thus my opinion is the second starting OH will be determined in preseason competition and it will be a dog fight. This is a very competitive group.

And I should add with this big of group and it’s talent, it will probably be a battle all season long so no one can think they’ve won the job for the season. There will be pressure from the bench to keep improving and performing at a high level for everyone frankly.
