Sucks for them, but this really would hurt a lot of underclassmen if they allowed it.

I don't think either one was planning on coming back, given that they signed up to play for Red Scare in TBT.

Granting an extra year would have favored smaller schools.
It would have had more support if it benefitted the big 5.

Yeah, overall, it makes things much less messy. The seniors that would've gone to a post season tournament got screwed out of it. However, allowing them to come back would screw a lot of actual seniors next season who were counting on their turn to play. Let's say this happened in 2019 instead of 2020, and they let seniors come back and Trey would've been back on the bench because Cunningham returned. Trey would've been worse off than he is now. Not only that but lots of transfers pick their new location based on the opportunities are opening up by graduating seniors. Wouldn't be fair to them.

I can't say I'm surprised. I liken it to medical redshirt eligibility. Had any senior been injured at the end of the regular season having played in enough games, he wouldn't have been given another year.

For the spring sports, NCAA stated that all classes would get an extra year, not just seniors. And they allowed the rosters sizes to increase so incoming recruits would still be able come. The additional complication is how smaller (less wealthy schools) would pay for the "extra" scholarships, especially with tuition and sports program revenue decimated as well as endowments due to the market. So many smaller schools will probably not be able to handle the additional scholarships where as the larger schools can mostly manage.
