Most Valuable College Basketball Programs

Today's Wall Street Journal contains an article on the most valuable college basketball programs. It assesses open market value through revenue and expenses with risk and growth considerations.

Kentucky is first followed by Louisville and Indiana. UD is 21st but with the same valuation of $88.5 as no. 20 Alabama. VCU is 40th.

That explains the "draw" to IU, and why the natives were restless. 3rd most valuable program in the country, and couldn't make The Dance, let alone a Final Four. Given all the years when our ROI was subpar, I can feel their pain.

Good point.

Wonder if this valuation for Indiana considered Archie at the helm. The coach could be one of the growth factors in the assessment in the manner that senior leaders are in corporate valuations.

Archie has stepped from the warming drawer into the FIRE. i genuinely like him and am grateful for his commitment to our program. He's "an ornery bugger" and will need every ounce of it in that crucible. He's a fiery competitor and couldn't resist the challenge and upside.

I recently joked UD was just looking for a winning coach willing to make $2M/year and be adored. No such riches at the time, and I'm sure they invested wisely, but Coaches Purnell & Gregory surely had regular second thoughts. The most rabid UD fans lose sight of how special our program is.

UD was reportedly willing to elevate Coach Miller to Gregg Marshall status -- $3M/yr, top 10 nationally, God-like. I'm all about Coach Grant now -- people make choices. Maybe Coach Miller will become a hall of famer ... I'm more worried whether he surfaces on the other side of the rapids.
