Mike Schmidt

A pay wall may keep you from opening this story in the NY Times about Dayton native Mike Schmidt, 'greatest draft pick ever.' I bring it up because the Flyers' final game of '70 on Founders Field was against Ohio University, coached by legendary Bob Wren . . . and Schmidt from Fairview High School, who was a star for the Bobcats. There were a bunch of scouts behind the backstop . . . I'm pretty chatty and asked who they were on campus to see. One scout said he was looking at OU's catcher, Steve Swisher. Didn't mention Mike. We had a pretty decent pitcher that year, can't recall his name . . . believe the unnamed guy started, but didn't finish. We were on the short end of a 17-0 final if memory serves. Somebody from OU, may have been Schmidt, put one over the snow fence in center that almost cleared the railroad tracks . . . older alums will remember the rail tracks. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/06/s...gtype=Homepage

Back then (1970)I don't think that baseball was a priority for UD. i have no idea why a program like Ohio U would even schedule us. The only baseball player I can remember from that era was pitcher Tom Jackson. I, like you Moville, graduated in 1971

Hey Bill . . . we'll have to celebrate our 50th on the 51st. Lots of nice memories on the virtual reunion book. You are correct about Jackson. Pretty good pitcher . . . he may have been one of the guys the scouts were looking at that day in '70. Ohio U and Wren did the Flyers and the city a favor, bringing hometown kid Schmidt back his last year. That's my guess anyway.
