Games of note 2019-2020 edition
Time for the yearly "Games of Note" thread. You know the rules: you only care about what UD does, fine ignore this thread, otherwise he's the catchall thread for the daily activities of teams UD faces/faced teams ahead/behind them in the top 25 or seeding possibilities for the tournament or just games of interest.

Nothing jumps off the page to me as far as future opponents tonight, but:
Cincy @ OSU
ND @ UNC, Free Shoes U @ Pitt and Wake @ BC (ACC games to start the year must be a "thing" now, I'd venture that they are all ACC network games, in hopes of increasing viewership/subscriptions)

St. Mary's and Wisky played at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls, SD so I think it was considered a neutral game. It was definitely a pro Wisky crowd but the Gaels prevailed in OT. I'm sure the SMC game will be a difficult one but from what I saw on TV last night I think we will be way more athletic than them, save for Jordan Ford.

I was wrong on all those ACC games being ACC network games, 2 of them are on ESPN (something or other) however the biggest draw, ND @ UNC is on the ACC network.
Remember when ESPN 2 came out, something like 25 years ago (God I'm old) and Duke vs UNC was on ESPN 2 shortly after the channel debuted and many cable systems didn't pick it up yet?

Make no mistake about it …….the Georgia game is HUGE. The Flyers must get into the winners bracket of the Maui Tournament. If we lose to Georgia it will be an uphill battle.

Also in ACC (in)action, Virginia beat Syracuse 48-35. Based on the score, they may have set the sport back 75 years.

Painful.
Shooting percentages:
VA - 40.8%, threes 16.7%, FT 66.7%
Cuse - 23.6%, threes 17.2%, FT 42.9%

Most Pivotal Game

This is so true. As of right now, I would say the Georgia Game is the most pivotal game of the season. The "next" game, not withstanding!
If Georgia beats the Flyers, then we better hope that UD wins game two, and somehow avoids the host Chaminade. Playing Chaminade totally destroys the biggest reason why UD needs exempt tournaments.

On the UC/OSU front; I saw nothing from either team, that would indicated the Flyers couldn't beat them both right now in a regular season game. If that's indicative of what OSU will be, they are over ranked right now.

You give them far too much credit. The score was actually 48-34. 'Cuse would have needed overtime to reach 35.

Ugly game. Almost 10 minutes into the game, there were as many fouls as points.

Live in NJ so I hear all about Seton Hall (pre-season ranked #12 and should be good) and Rutgers (unlike in football, should be decent and middle of road Big 10 team this year and better if had more depth down low).
Article discussing Rutgers mentions their poor out of conference game and mentions that St. Bonaventures on Nov. 16 ( not sure of date) is only one of two out of conference games that could help Rutgers strength of schedule in March. Be interesting to see how Rutgers v. St. Bons turns out.
UMass plays Rutgers at Rutgers on Nov. 29 (not sure of date).
Be interesting to see how these two games pan out for the three teams and then how we compare to a mid level B10 team after we beat SBU and UM. Guess Rutgers did not want to schedule UD, where majority of fans would by UDs.

I only saw the 2nd half, which is probably why I thought OSU looked pretty good. DJ Carton is going to be a stud, Wesson had a couple of really good passes for a big man, looks confident stroking the 3 ball.
UC looked disheveled, didn't seem to have any flow, Jared Cumberland was non existent for much of the 2nd half. I'm sure that will get fixed, Brannen is an excellent coach.

The Bonnies lost IMO because of the injury to Osun ... he played 11 minutes with 6 points ... he is their star defensive player ...
Here is a quote from the Bonnie Forum ...
"I saw a replay furnished by S B U-TV and it shows O O landing after he blocks the shot and his knee goes inward instead of outward so I was surprised it is being called a bone bruise."
Per
http://bonabandwagon.proboards.com/t...-update?page=2
"An MRI showed no structural damage in his knee and he is only expected to be sidelined a few weeks."
http://bonabandwagon.proboards.com/t...-update?page=1
Jon Rothstein says ... St. Bonaventure's Osun Osunniyi has been diagnosed with a bone bruise in his knee and could miss up to a month. Injury occurred Tuesday night against Ohio.
See
https://pickinsplinters.com/2019/11/...iyi-to-injury/
"Bonaventure made just three of its 19 three-point field goal attempts (15.8 percent) and 20 of its 55 attempts from the field overall (36.4 percent). Kyle Lofton and Dominick Welch were a combined 5-of-23 from the field and 1-of-10 from three."
"Quote of the Game: Bonnies coach Mark Schmidt was unsurprisingly void of revealing quotes in his postgame interview with WPIG.
“We didn’t play well,” Schmidt said twice in the 2:27 segment.
“I have no idea. I have no idea,” Schmidt said of Osun Osunniyi’s prognosis. Osunniyi left the game with a knee injury with 15:49 remaining, needed crutches to walk to the locker room and did not return. The Atlantic 10 preseason all-conference and all-defense selection has started 21 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Davidson needs to shoot the three really well since they have zero inside presence.

Davidson loses to Auburn 76-66. Auburn holds Grady to 6 points and Gudmundsson to 7 points. That probably won't happen again for the remainder of the season.
A-10 goes 3-2 for the five games tonight. Not off to a great start!

It is early in the season but I think all the grad transfers and regular transfers in D1 (900+ per CBS sports) the season will led to many surprises. The playing field is a lot more even these days.
Like a BIG 10 team losing at home to Merrimack in there 2nd game as a D1 school.

WVU bears Akron. Xerius leads Akron in scoring taking 10 of his 14 shots from three. Still shows no interest in playing inside despite being 6’9”. He’ll do fine in the MAC.
McNeil played 4 minutes, went 0 for one from the field. Made 4 ft’s. I’m getting the impression we didn’t miss on him and that his gaudy numbers at Sinclair may not transfer to high level D1. I trust AG.

Winthrop, coached by former _avier assistant Pat Kelsey, is picked to finish 3rd in the Big South Conference which is the same conference as our next opponent Charleston Southern. Charleston Southern is picked to finish 6th.
St. Mary's was 1-0 and was ranked #18 in the polls. It just goes to show you what can happen if you don't play at your best night in and night out!
Phlandrous Fleming, all Big South first team, is the Bucs best player so lets see if we can improve on defense and contain him and not allow anyone else to go off. I think with the wake up call we got from ISU we will be up to the challenge!

Davidson with a really disappointing loss. They might be on shaky ground as far as an at large bid
The Bonnies go down to Siena to drop to 0-3. Seems like they might be in for a rough OOC till they get Osun back and turn around in A10 in play and knock some people off
UMass winning over a Northeastern team that's been a top of the CAA team the past couple years is a good result

Davidson was over hyped IMO. They have zero presence inside and really need to shoot the 3 ball extremely well to win. That’s a tall order.

Facts are not allowed on this thread.
Another fact: we traded away a worse Maui Mainland team to get Charleston Southern. So take comfort in knowing things could be worse.

No offense, but Evansville is on my list of top 10 most hated teams. Basketball shirts with sleeves. Jim Crews ordering the code red on Wes Coffee’s face. Chris Mack being there to execute it. Scott Haffner dropping 65 points on us. I find no redeeming qualities. Well, they just beat UK so there’s one redeeming quality.

I just watched the Charleston Southern versus Furman game. Furman crushed CSU (Dayton’s next opponent). CSU is not a big team. They can’t get a rebound because they don’t box out. I feel for their guards. Their guards are trying so hard. Their guards are frantically dribbling the ball too much. Their guards must be exhausted by the end of the game. In the first half, the coach called multiple time outs and the players executed nothing. Each time, they chucked up long distance jump shots. CSU’s shot selection consists of a large number of long distance jump shots without setting their feet. Hence, they missed a lot of shots. CSU is in deep trouble traveling to Dayton and then at Michigan State.
There is something wrong with the attitude on the CSU team. Maybe I am making a mountain out of a mole hill but I just watched a CSU player disrespectfully bounce pass a ball behind his back to the referee and trot off.

No offense taken. They had a strong Physical Therapy program (my daughter’s profession), so my wife and daughter thought the school was worth a look. We toured the campus, and met with some of the faculty and staff, and they all seemed like really nice people, who took a personal interest in their students. Without that perspective, I probably would have a less than favorable opinion of UofE, too. As it is, I can reserve my hatred for Crews, and leave the school out of it.

Safe to say, Kentucky didn't have an Ace up their sleeve last night (thanks, I'll be here all week)
Wednesday Nov 13:
LSU @ VCU (How is Will Wade still at LSU, he seemed like dead man walking last year, then just raised his middle finger at the NCAA and nothing happened)
FDU @ Fordham (I'm not gonna try to spell Chris Farley Emily Dickenson U)
SJU @ UConn
LaSalle @ Penn
Nova @ Ohio State
LIU @ Mason
E Washington @ St Louis
Missouri - KC @ Drake
Indiana St @ Louisville
Nebraska-Omaha (I thought that was Creighton ) @ Colorado St

Please stick to your day job
Especially since it gives you time to post the daily line up of games of interest to watch, which I appreciate.

Here is the difference. Despite that loss, UK, will probably be no lower than a 4 seed (maybe even 2-3 seed) for the NCAA. UD on the other hand, would have an all year uphill battle just to make the tournament if we lost on Saturday.
Bad losses don't hurt the big 5 like they do for us.

Yeah. And they’ll most likely go like 12 for 19 when we play them

I could see the Bonnies do what they did last year and struggle through OOC play and then end up 12-6 in A10 play
Davidson I know is down Prichett who seemed like a nice role player/glue guy for them and Carter Collins. Not sure what's going on with Grady
They're in the danger zone. Nevada, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Loyola, Northeastern and a good field in Orlando for their exempt tourney coming up. Winnable games but they've got to play better

VCU is representing the A10 well. Hope that they can close this out. LSU turnovers factor big so far.

St Joe’s also doing well. Up on UConn big near the end of the first half (Charleston Classic).

Barring a miracle for LUS, VCU going to win in a very close game. LSU closed the gap in the last few minutes.

Hoping to see Hurley get upset again. St Joe’s up by 8 with just over 6 to go.

ESPN stats shows indiana state with only 6 rebounds at the half. How is that few even possible? Curious what the record low might be.
