DUQ vs RI
Dukes had a 14 point lead but it’s now tied up at 45 with 6:30 left. In RI.

42-41 DUQ 4 left
Now 55-52 RI 3:20 left. Dukes looked tired. Apparently they’ve played a bunch of OT minutes the last two weeks. RI amped up their D and Dukes are running out of gas right now. We will see if they can find another gear to pull the upset.

28 sec left. Tied at 58. RI will have the ball after time out. Dukes missed free throws late. They should have the lead.

Thanks to udx2 for sending me a PM about the other thread. I miss posted when I opened this thread. Hope it doesn’t cost me my round table chair. Hopefully the king is taking the weekend off and won’t notice. Or better yet maybe I can pay Chris R to move all this before the king sees it???

I did not understand why Dayton passed up Dambrot who would have killed for this spot. It was a mutual win win for proven entities both ways. Dayton instead went for established middle of road.
Instead of Flyer dreams of touching up a program like Duke in the NCAA in a few years, there are nightmare losses to Duquesne on the horizon.
I apologize for a single post of this nature; but this move was glaringly wrong from the start.
There are no excuses, so spare them.

Might have had something to do with the controversy that surrounded him at Central Michigan.

He’s 59 years old and has never won an NCAA tournament game. His record in the NIT is 3-7. His record in the MAC championship game is 3-6. Duquesne is currently 225 in the RPI, right behind New Orleans, Cal St. Bakersfield, and Florida Atlantic.

Can't judge his first year, it's not fair! His team was picked last in the conference

He’s ok, he’s a good catch for Duquesne, but forego1 thinks he was the guy who was going to help Dayton “touch up a program like Duke in the NCAA in a few years”? LOL I don’t think so. At least Anthony Grant actually has beaten Duke in the NCAA tournament...

If you're critical of Dambrot's work at Akron you must really critical of AG at Bama

He beat Dayton this year. That settles it: we officially missed out on the next Coach K! Just think, we would be NCAA tournament bound with Dambrot this year. Probably Final Four bound, touching up Duke.

He was most likely a big underdog in every NCAAT and NIT game that he has coached in. Seems irrelevant.

He was ok, not great, but the competition in the SEC is a little steeper than the MAC. Kentucky is not Bowling Green...

Alright, forget Dambrot and put aside he has never had the resource of a major program. [Forget that I see sparks of hope and optimism for Duquesne, and this old general shows up flirting with heart failure by affording vehement visible leadership.]
A program reflects the TOP.
Outside observation (obviously only my opinion):
Flyers have no direction, no cohesion, no purpose, no fire, no fight and there is no evidence of any urgency or impending explosion. Dayton should be lurking as the dominant predator in this pond, but that is not going to materialize.
An upper middle A-10 future (NCAA unlikely for decades). OUCH!! sorry, but I don't cover my eyes.

A couple thoughts from yesterday.
1. While watching Duquesne almost upset RI, I thought their coach deserves to be named A10 COY. If Hurley goes undefeated in the A10 he will probably get it, but the Duquesne coach will have earned it if the Dukes finish 2nd.
2. While watching the UD- SLU game, I thought we would probably be right where we are today even if AM hadn’t left. At best we might have two additional wins, but no way we would have 4-5 additional wins. We are just so young with so many new and inexperienced parts. And we certainly are not deep.
3. RI is just the opposite. 2 year’s ago they were 17-15 and no post-season with a coach that was in his 6th year. Last year 25-10 and upset Creighton in 1st round of NCAAs before pushing Final Four Oregon to the limits in a 3 point loss in the 2nd round. This year they are sitting at 18-3, undefeated in the A10 and ranked 24. This is Hurley’s 8th year at RI. I expect AG and staff to get to a similiar point only in the next 2-3 years.
4. UD is hard to watch some games (especially early in the season). And it’s sure frustrating to travel this rollercoaster of win today lose tomorrow win the next game path that defines this year. But I see improvement. We couldn’t play man defense for 4 minutes earlier this year. That’s gotten better. Crutch, Trey and Jordan have all gotten better and more confident. JC has an inside game that defies logic at 6’7”. I think DD hadn’t been great the last couple games, but I expect him to finish his career strong. It should help if we can finally get him 3-5 minutes of rest each game the rest of the way after having to run him 39-40 every game. X, KA, Crosby, MS need to find a way to contribute more, but I don’t see any of them hurting us badly like they were early in the season. My hope is two of the four kick it into a higher gear before the A10 tourney.

Like I said, Dambrot was a good hire for them, but let’s not crown him the next Coach K just yet. Duquesne has played a very weak schedule. Dayton is literally their best win of the season, by far.

Can’t disagree with you here.

...but isn’t this a bit premature and neurotic? You may very well be right, but in my humble opinion, it is way too early to reach that conclusion. Grant inherited a roster with probably one guy who would start on a legitimate NCAA tournament team. DD has been a 6th or 7th guy the past few years, Crosby and Landers were basically 9th and 10th guys (Landers barely played before this season), XW is injured or there is something else going on with him, and the rest of the roster is basically freshmen.
At the beginning of the season, I expected this roster to be about .500, and that’s about where they are.

Hopefully, for all concerned (myself included) this will be my last post:
FlyerGuyer, I don't expect Dambrot to make NCAA tourneys at Duquesne. It is not an ideal spot.
Longtimefan, the damage breaking from soundness is not easily reversible.

This is only Hurley's 6th year at URI, not 8th.
and your point about 2 years ago is flawed...that year they only had EC Matthews for 10 minutes, and Hassan Martin for half the year. if not for losing both players, they are a tourney team.
2014-15: EC and Hassan sophomores, 23-10 (13-5, T-2nd) and NIT
2015-16: 17-15, No EC, and limited Hassan
2016-17: 25-10, A10 title, round 32
it took him 2 years to turn the team around from 8-21 to 23-10

Just a little update here: Duquesne gets blown out at home by Fordham (yes, Fordham) 80-57. They have lost 5 of their last 6 games and are now # 230 in the RPI.
You guys still longing for Dambrot?
