ILL State

Woo hoo! Flyers win 3-1. And we finished off a close 4th set with a block to take the win. Good to see the block at the end. I remember back in the day we use to have a shut-down block at the end of matches. Nice to see more blocks this match and the final one to seal the win.

Good match. That first set, we were making errors again, it seemed. Couldn't get the kills, or figure out their blocks. Horsman substituted Giardina for Emmenecker half way through. Jane came back in for the remaining 3 sets. Giardina looks to still be working on the setting locations of her hitters.

We then took care of the next 3 sets. The fourth set was fun as a fan to watch, and the crowd enjoyed the last few points. They must have just been more focused in those sets. Good job on the block, and getting to balls as well. A good couple of rallys during the game as well.

No pep band, and a small showing by students, but the Red Scare Volleyball Leader (Pres?) mentioned it was parent's weekend on the way out, so that affected things.

Tim Balice (last year's volunteer coach) showed up, and after a Dayton kill late in the 4 set that knocked down both camcorders, he went to help the guys in charge, and even broke out his phone to record since the camcorders weren't on yet. It's just in his blood.

Laura Hubacek was subbed in for Alaina Turner at the end of set 2 with UD up 24-19. We didn't get a point on the rally, and then Alaina came back in.

Katie Machi is no longer using crutches, but she was casually walking around with the team during the post-game fan "tunnel".

Mark down another win, and let's go for 2 more tomorrow!

Flyers got off to a terrible start in the first set. Horsmon was ticked and half way through the set pulled Emmenecker for Giardina. Honestly, he probably could have done a complete lineup swap as poorly as we were playing.

Emmenecker back in for start of second set and we jumped out to an 11-2 lead. Things went much better the rest of the match - including a 27-25 clincher in set 4 after being down 19-23. Nice to see some moxie at crunch time.

Redbirds came in with an 8-2 record and a #69 RPI compared to our #74 RPI - so they are a decent team.

Great win for the Flyers. I think it is right up there with the neutral court victory over WKU. Dayton has not been the most consistent team this year, but there good is pretty good. Still a tricky match against Eastern Michigan, but if the Flyers can avoid mistakes they should get another nice win in that one too.

SLU and GW got nice wins in week 3. SLU over Virginia and GW over nearby Maryland. I think this confirms the A-10 will be a three horse race. (Rhode Island could play spoiler but I doubt they can win the league).

Illinois State has been a pretty solid program for awhile. They are in the Missouri Valley conference and in vball Northern Iowa and Wichita State have been the powers -- but Ill St has been pushing those two in recent years. Ill State actually won it last year and advanced to the 2nd round of the NCAAs. This conference has in the past sent two teams to the NCAAs and occasionally three. That tops the A-10. The other team that is in that mix has been Missouri State. It's a solid conference in volleyball. This should have been our toughest match this weekend -- but as we know -- if you don't bring it every match and take care of business, you can and will get beat.

Go Flyers.

Dayton improves to 3-4 all time against Illinois state. Dayton has won 3 in a row and every match since 1978.

Dayton also moves to 4-2 all time against Eastern Michigan. And has won all three meetings against Jacksonville.

While I'm at it, Dayton is now 3-4 against Western Kentucky, 2-0 against, UT-Martin,17-6 against Cleveland State, and 6-1 all time against Eeastern Illinois with Dayton winning the last 5. Very nice to see Dayton with such a large gap against the Ohio based Horizon League team.

Dayton also fell to 2-3 against Southern Illinois, 21-7 all time against Marquette, 1-1 vs Baylor, 1-1 vs. North Dakota, and 1-4 against Iowa State.
