NCAA First Round: Kentucky

Game starts at 5:30 ET

Definitely a big match for both programs. Kentucky probably comes in a little slighted thinking they might get a seed, and Dayton seems a little disappointed to be traveling so far, but both teams look evenly matched. Kentucky didn't leave Lexington too much during Non-Con while the Flyers traveled and challenged themselves but came away without any big wins. Since then Kentucky has picked up some big conference wins at home and Dayton has dominated the A-10, but transitioned from a slow starting team/not great down the stretch team, to one that has played much better in those categories. UD has 3 of its best wins late in a 3-0 sweep at SLU, a 3-1 win in the A-10 title game against X, and a 3-0 sweep in a do or die match for Notre Dame.

Keys for the Flyers:

1. Start Strong: Kentucky is 5-0 in 5 set matches where the Flyers have struggled.

2. Serve Receive needs to be stellar: From what I have heard, Kentucky has a strong serve and from what I know, we have only a few major attackers. Sam Selsky will need as much help and as many options as possible.

3. Block well: In a few of UK's losses (including Miss. State. worst loss), they were outblocked. If the UD block can build momentum that can help to bring down the wildcats before the 5th set.

UK's back row D is really good. Forcing UD into some errors while trying to find the line.

A lot of UD's points have been tooled off the block, and they have won a couple of jousts.

This will be a tough match.

Dayton still swinging really aggressively because of how good that defense is. They appear scared of the back row D and then the subsequent UD offense.

Dayton has to be just a little less aggressive.

UK just put in Gretchen Geisler.
She is a SR MB who played almost all of UK's first 12 matches, but since then has been used sparingly.
I guess she would be subbed in if the coach doesn't like what he sees.

Dayton wins set 3, but Kentucky played really well. Have to admit I'm still very worried. When Kentucky is passing well their offense is extremely strong. Does Dayton's stop of their late run give UK confidence or does it add to their disbelief?

Kentucky is playing well right now. They are dictating play. Digging and passing well. And like our announcer shane said they have been reading the back row sets well.

If UD can't take set 5 they only have to look back at set 3 up 20-12 and couldn't put UK away.

This seems to be a constant problem with UD having big leads and letting them slip away. Last year against OSU up something like 13-8 in set 5 and lost the set and match.

UK seems to be hurting themselves in the 5th. A lot of mistimes and mi****s. Their serving is pretty strong and they're staying in it

Repeat of last year. Ahead in 5th set and let it slit away. Oh well, great season. Only one senior, should be really good next year. But Dayton has to learn to close out those 5th games in the NCAA.

Very tough loss. Dayton had a lead and momentum off that huge rally and got beat at the end by one of UK's least aggressive servers in their Libero Steph Klefot. She hadn't been disrupting our offense all night but in the pressure situation she was in control. UK was definitely a good team but that was UD's match to win.

UD's to win as it was last year. Not a good trend going here.

Last year 13-8 against OSU and couldn't close it out.

This year 13-10 against Ky and couldn't close it out.

Smitten by the No. 13 again. We just seem to stall there, odd really.

Tough loss, but very good season. At the end of the day, Kentucky was still the favorite in this one. Were we UK fans, we'd have expected to win this in a close one, so it pretty much played out as the committee intended. I think our ranking this year and seed was very spot-on. Beat everyone below us, lost to everyone above us in very close matches. Sure we could have (and maybe should have) won 2-3 of them, but these opponents were not red-headed stepchildren. They are the who's who of volleyball and as their final season rankings indicated, probably the better overall teams (but not my much).

Nothing to be ashamed of tonight. This was a tough First Round match. Woulda, coulda, shoulda. It wasnt Lipscomb. The fifth set slip-aways definitely hurt. But it wasnt like Kentucky sat on their hands and let us walk it home.

Things look very good for next season.

That Kentucky team was very good and maybe better than last year's OSU team and on a nuetral court. Dayton did well given who they were playing against based on the fact that if this was the basketball tourney that was a #5 seed we were gong against.

Kentucky's back-row was good, their serving was very good, and when in system their offense was very tough to stop. Dayton adjusted well after set 1, but mid-set 3 Kentucky made adjustments as well. Their coach did a good job slowing Dayton's strengths of Kray's back row attack, Megan's slide, and Sam's quick attack. I think our poorest performance (and has been most of the year) was how we attacked the overpass. That is a huge momentum play and Kray, Z, Sam, and Von haven't done well finishing the overpass. UD had it very lucky the last few years bc Flet rarely missed crushing an overpass, but this year's team couldn't finish it.

Tough loss for the Flyers but clearly to a very good team. It was a good match and I enjoyed watching it. They bring back a lot of key pieces for next year. I think Kray learned a lot. Her back row attack changed from set 4 to set 5 and she was tooling off the triple block. I think Megan will learn a lot too. There weren't too many teams who were able to challenge her slide and she will have some time to reflect and adapt to how that defense covered her in sets 4 and 5.

Yvonne has been a great player and leader for the Flyers for a long time. Glad she won the A-10 tourney and got to battle in this match. This program may be growing slowly, but any growth is good. That was an inexperience team that took UK to 5 sets and an inexperienced team that performed in the NCAA tourney as well as last years team did. They represented UD very well.

Did we ever have a point that went as long as the one tonight? I think it was around where Dayton was at 12. That was just crazy! Still proud of the team.

This was an absolute gut-wrenching loss. Up 13-9 in fifth set, get out-scored at the end of fifth set 7-1, two match points in our favor, get called for a lift on an overpass on first match point, get aced on second match point, Kray had a back row swing late and chose to dink it to the middle of the court. What can you say, this one hurts. I thought when we won that marathon 11-9 point to get to 12-9 that we would close it out. Not to be.

Were we playing not to lose instead of to win? Got to learn how to win the 5 setters.

The ace on a soft serve when the score was 14-13 UD was the backbreaker. It was the second ace on a nearly identical serve a few points earlier. What a heartbreaking loss! I agree that UK was just a slight notch better than UD, but still, this match was there for the taking.

Took the argueably 17 seed to a 5 set match. Close match that could have gone either way. Not because they played way over their head, but because they played to their ability. This team has a lot to be proud of.

And in round 2, UK drops Texas A&M 3-0, thus upsettting the seedings. A&M dropped 1 set to Lipscomb in their first round matchup, and they dropped it badly 12-25. Wonder if A&M had a form problem?
