tOSU
We have officially jumped them in figstats rpi by one. We are 25 and they are 26. They can’t be happy about the TN loss this am nor do I think they ever want to get beat by Dayton.
Match up issues for us might be their 6’6” right side hitter. She’s a freshman from Belgrade, Solvia. She gets the second most swings. Our block against her will be Lauren, Alli, Molly and Kendyll. I think that’s basically 6’1” vs 6’6”. It might be an issue.
On the reverse, their setters aren’t very tall. They used both against TN I’d expect them to start with 5’10” Sr. Dailey. They also have 5’9” So Mauer. Our hitters should be able to score over both.
With Amelia out, they are also a little taller than us in the middle. But Kendyll is use to that as are Lauren and to some degree Alli. We just need our outsides to do what they do very well - make great decisions as they jump and swing hard when they se the opening. I haven’t seen them play this year, so I don’t know if we are faster. We play pretty fast, so this could be a competitive advantage.
I also see Brooke being a key to this match. At 6’2” she might be called on to go extra rotations on the left side to stop their 6’6” Rightside hitter. She plays at least one rotation their now. That might be increased to 2-3 of her front row duties for this match.
Olivia also might be called on. Hopefully her knees had no issues after her limited court time against Evansville.
Time to beat a team people don’t think we can beat — because we know we can even if others outside the program don’t think so.
Go Flyers!

Down 0-1. But we figured some things out. Now we have to raise our game starting with the veteran players. 18-25 could have been worse but we stayed in the set fighting. Just need to kick in another gear.

Their 6’6” Rightside is hurting us. Need to find a way to stop her. She runs a slide and we haven’t defended the slide well for years. We don’t run many ourselves so we probably don’t practice it much and thus don’t practice defending it.

That block was all in. Not even close. Camera had an overhead view. It was just so fast the ref couldn’t see it.

Doubles are killing us. They’ve been an issue all year. I’ve never seen this many called on a team. It’s been every week so can’t really blame a ref crew. It’s clearly something our setters are doing and occasionally our backrow defenders.
I would seriously consider leaving Lauren in all 6 rotations. We need the extra attacker.

Bruns just played 3 rotations in the front row and took only 1 swing. That isn’t going to work. And it tells how bad our ball handling/passing is right now.

Probably the best crowd I’ve seen on a Sat night in Dayton ever. Players need to get something going so the crowd gets into it.

FLYERS WIN. All I can say is how the yell didwe win this match. Steele nerves by the Flyers. Just kept fighting against to be honest a team that was playing better than UD tonight.
Big-big win with a ton of injuries and freshmen who just hung in there and didn’t hurt us and found ways to contribute. And vets that kept leading even when we weren’t playing well.

I watched early in the first set, but couldn’t watch anything after that. Just followed along on the live stats. Ohio State was definitely better in the first set. The OSU block was in place and Alli Papesh was struggling. Turns out she scored most of Dayton last points in the 5th set to win the match. I hope the fans stayed until the end. This was a classic.(based on the comeback, the stats, and who Dayton just beat). I will need to watch the archived version of the match when I get a chance.

Biggest play in the 5th was when “little” 6’1” freshmen Alli and Molly put up a block on tOSU 6’6” Rightside hitter who was killing us all night and FINALLY stuffed her. That gave UD our first match point at 14-13. It took two Match pints to win, but the tide turned on that play. We had no answer for any attack from the right, but especially this hitter compounded by she was causing havoc for all our hitters on the left - Lauren, Alli and Brooke - most of the night. Huge play by two freshmen.

Great W! Feels like vintage UD VB. Margins so thin in this sport. Heartbroken to KU and UW, bounce back and return favor to Rocky Top and Ohio State. With so many close losses to OSU last few years this feels gooooood.
Especially with 3-4 players unavailable who were suited up 2 weeks ago. Some greenies out there this weekend but they showed they have some toughness and backbone too.

Some real moxie shown by the ladies this whole weekend. We did not see that earlier in the season. Injuries and roster changes could have been a drag on the whole team but they were not.
Dug out of a 14-18 hole in set 2 by scoring 7 straight points. We lose set 2 and the match is over IMHOP.
In set 5 we give tosu 3 of their first 5 points on service errors when we could not keep the ball in play - and we still keep it tied at 5-5. We then go down 7-11 and things look bleak.
Probably doesn't make up for that loss to tosu 16-14 in the fifth at Frericks in the NCAA back in 2010, but still pretty sweet.
Quite a crowd tonight. Place was pretty much filled up - all the way to the corners. Box score says 2285. Thought there were more than that. It was a real sauna inside. Only other similar size crowds I can remember were maybe a couple of Xavier matches back in the day.

Home record is 7-0. (Undefeated at home, just like the old days.) and SOS Rank is 10.
Time to tear thru the A10. Back in 2010, we took care of business in the conference. There were a couple times we dropped one set when we should have swept a team, but we knew we were the best team in the gym and we played like it most nights. Once we got into conference play we only dropped 8 sets in 20 matches the rest of the way and finished 28-4. Ended 2 points in the 5th set from the Sweet 16.
Time to get on a roll and not only go undefeated in conference play, but challenge ourselves to not drop sets. We should win the conference. Let’s see if we can dominate and not drop any conference sets. And let’s get healthy.

Take a look at this video of match point. We all remember the kill by Papesh. However, I missed this in real time. After watching the video many times I think the dig by Wolf was absolutely amazing. She serves and then somehow digs a carom off the block while being almost completely out of bounds. Not only did she dig the ball but made a good enough pass for the set to Papesh. Of such things great victories emerge.

I agree it was a great dig. However the point was unreal for many reasons. Every Dayton players came up with a fantastic touch.
First Margo serves short/ soft which was probably called by a coach. tOSU handles the serve with a perfect pass. That set up their offensive play which was a back-set to their middle on a slide to the right. They had been killing us from the right all night long. Plus, we have NOT defended the slide well this year. And to be honest, our block was not set on this play. Alli got up, but Kendyll did not close the block from the middle. But Alli’s block was dead on so their middle went down the line with her shot and Margo was there for a great dig - meaning she got under the ball, but to be honest, her pass was kind of bad. It was probably scored a ONE - because it left the setter with only one hitter to go to. It was pretty close to the net, not very high and only about 3 feet inside the left side out of bounds line.
So Bridget has to run almost all the entire way across the net because she is set up about 5’ off the Rightside out of bounds line - the traditional setter spot for the second touch. She had to get there fast because the pass wasn’t very high. She has to avoid Kendyll who is trying to move off the net and transition into an approach to hit the ball if she gets the set. We have no backrow hitter. All 6 of our players are in a 2-10’ Square off the leftside pin. It’s very crowded and Bridget finds a way to get to the ball and set it without committing a double which the refs were calling all night.
Everyone in the place KNOWS our only option is to set freshman Alli - our leftside OH. Their block was SET but Alli found a way to beat it.
It was unreal. So many things could have gone wrong on this play, but everyone who touched the ball for UD handled a bad situation and together they won the point and the match and that started with Margo getting under the ball under difficult conditions.
