Richmond Spiders
Last Season: 26-9 (13-3)
Key Losses: David Gonzalvez, Ryan Butler
Head Coach: Chris Mooney
Projected Starting Lineup
PG: Kevin Anderson 6-0 Sr.
SG: Kevin Smith 6-5 Jr.
SF: Francis-Cedric Martel 6-6 Jr.
PF: Justin Harper 6-10 Sr.
C: Dan Geriot 6-9 Sr.
Key Reserves: Darrius Garrett 6-9 Jr. PF, Josh Duinker 6-11 Jr. C, Derrick Williams 6-6 Fr. PF, Cedrick Lindsay 6-0 Fr. SG
The Richmond Spiders experienced a lot last season. They defeated teams like Mississippi State, Missouri, Florida and Temple in the regular season. They were ranked in the top 25. They got to the Atlantic 10 tournament championship game where they lost to Temple. They received a bid into the NCAA tournament, despite losing in the first round to St. Mary's. With all of that success under their belt, the Spiders hope and expect to repeat that success this season.
The Spiders lost two very important players in David Gonzalvez and Ryan Butler. Gonzalvez was second on the team in scoring and assists last season, and Butler was the team's fourth leading scorer. Both players started every game last season.
But Richmond's best player - its leading scorer and starting point guard - returns for his senior season after considering making the...................

http://www.collegehoopsnet.com/35-ri...preview-168805
http://www.collegehoopsnet.com/sites...s/richmond.jpgOverall Rank: #35
Conference Rank: #3 Atlantic 10 Conference
2009-10: 26-9, 13-3
2009-10 postseason: NCAA
Coach: Chris Mooney (57-70 at Richmond, 75-82 overall)
Coach Chris Mooney led Richmond to back-to-back CBI appearances in 2008 and 2009, but last year the Spiders finally took the next step and made it to the NCAA Tournament. They were unfortunate to run into St. Mary’s in the first round, but this is a team that will now look to win an NCAA Tournament game, not just get an invitation.
Final Projection:
If the Spiders want to play big they can neutralize their problems on the glass. Even in that scenario, they still have plenty of shooters thanks to players like Harper and Geriot who can hit the long ball. Either way Anderson will control the backcourt and Smith can shut down just about any opposing player. With Garrett emerging as a great shot blocking threat, Richmond can win games with their defense and at least not get beat too bad on the glass.
Projected Post-season Tournament: NCAA
Projected Starting Five:
Kevin Anderson, Senior, Guard, 17.8 ppg
Cedrick Lindsay, Freshman, Guard, DNP last season
Francis-Cedric Martel, Junior, Forward, 2.7 ppg
Justin Harper, Senior, Forward, 10.6 ppg
Dan Geriot, Senior, Center, 6.8 ppg

Per WH of the A10 board:
http://www.basketballforum.com/atlan...-richmond.html
RICHMOND
The key to success for the Spiders is to find a replacement shooter for graduated David Gonzalvez; rebound the ball better (13th in the A-10 at -5.4 margin); find a way to score inside more regularly; and get more consistent performances from seniors Dan Geriot and Justin Harper.
Richmond might have the deepest team in the league, and I expect the Spiders and Flyers to challenge Temple for the league title. Coach Mooney has tons of experience to draw upon, including a potentially emerging star in swingman Francis Martel. Justin Harper came on strong in the second half of last season and finally showed why he has NBA potential. Richmond has two go-to scorers in Kevin Anderson and Harper. Supposedly KA worked on his jumper and says he'll shoot better from the arc (34% 3PG last year). He'd be impossible to guard if he's on target more often.
I think Geriot will play much better than last season. He's lost weight and has worked hard on his game. Although Gonzo was a terrific player, I don't think Richmond will miss him as much as one might think. Martel will pick up some of the scoring and Mooney has some talented youngsters ready to step up, such as Darien Brothers.
Butler might be missed a bit more because of his defense and willingness to do the little things. I hope burly frosh Derrick Williams can help out on the boards. The Spiders simply can get outrebounded every game for the program to get any better.
NONCONFERENCE SCHEDULE
W - THE CITADEL
W - WILLIAM & MARY
L - At Iona
W - CHARLESTON SOUTHERN
W - SOUTHERN
W - Wright State (Hoffman Estates, Ill)
L - Purdue ((Hoffman Estates, Ill)
L - At Old Dominion
W - At Arizona State
W - VCU
W - Georgia Tech (Paradise Island, Bahamas)
W - At UNC Greensboro
L - at Seton Hall
W - WAKE FOREST
W - BUCKNELL
NONCONFERENCE RECORD: 11-4
Richmond starts out with a tuneup win over Citadel and then gets revenge at home vs. William & Mary, which beat the Spiders last year. Iona returns all their top players from a 21-win team. Richmond can win, but Iona is athletic, experienced and tough at home. The Gaels do have a new coach, however, after Kevin Williard was hired by Seton Hall. Richmond returns home for what should be a pair of wins over Charleston Southern and Soutern. Charleston Southern has a good backcourt but is weak upfront. Southern lost 25 games last season.
Richmond heads to the Hoffman Estates, where Xavier and Dayton have had success recently. I see the Spiders beating a solid Wright State team that's no longer coached by Brad Brownell. Purdue might not have Robbie Hummel, but the team is still darn good. Winnable game but I go with the Boilermakers.
Following Purdue is a very tough stretch of games. Richmond hasnt beaten ODU and VCU in the same season in what seems like forever. I see another split, as the Spiders lose to ODU on the road and beat VCU at home. In between the Spiders go to Arizona State and get their first big road win vs. a well coached but young ASU squad. Tough place to play, but Richmond's experience carries the day. Richmond follows up with a win in the Bahamas vs. Georgia Tech. GT has a pretty good backcourt but the frontcourt is new and inexperienced.
UNC Greenboro offers some respite. UNC-G lost 23 games last year and turned over most of its roster. Two more BCS teams come next. Seton Hall is pretty good and plenty experienced. Williard is a good young coach, too. I call it a loss. Wake, meanwhile, has beaten Richmond 3-4 times in a row last I checked. Spiders took them to OT at Wake last year. This time Richmond breaks through at home. Wake still has lots of talent, but the team is young and the coach is new. Richmond really has to win games like this to make the jump to elite status in the A-10.
Bucknell is dangerous enough to beat Richmond if the Spiders come out flat, but I see the home team turning it on in the second half to win.
BONUS A-10 PREDICTION: 12-4 (23-8 overall)
The Spiders pair up with Charlotte, George Washington and St. Joseph's (the last of which replaces St. Louis). So the unbalanced sked is somewhat easier. Last year, Richmond went 4-1 against these teams. I could see Richmond going 4-2 against them.
The Spiders also go on the road at LaSalle, Massachusetts, Dayton, Fordham and Temple. I could see Richmond winning three of these games. Among the top A-10 teams, Richmond probably has the easiest path to the regular-season crown.

You know that Juwan wants to play and be part of this home victory. If Parker starts I just hope he continues to be hot. We need this one.

Silver lining: only a 4 point game with PW going to the line and Richmond is shooting out of their minds right now.

Agree, now that we have Paul Williams starting along with CJ and JP, we have enough 3 point shooters that we don't need a 3 point specialist, especially one that's not as good as the 3 aforementioned.

I want to see us stay with Richmond and not let them pull away at the end of the half. Then we needto have a strong start to the second half. If we get back to our normal rebounding we can do this.

We kept it close at 30 - 38 on Chris Wright's 13 points. We were outbounded 16 to 13 and Richmond was 5 for 8 for 3s. We can do this.
Got ESPNU on two computers because each one is freezing up regularly, but relying on Bucky and Larry even though they are over 30 seconds behind ESPNU. Cannot help that. Hope others are having an easier time watching the game.

Fab looks lost and if his stroke is gone he just needs to sit.
Josh Parker should not be guarding Anderson. Let the freshman handle him. It's not about age, it's about quickness, and Parker can't handle him.
Good with the bad once again with Chris. Hope we can pull this out with better defense in the second.

Chris Wright has to know that he cannot pick up his 3rd this early in the half. It only took a couple possesions for Luke to get toasted by Harper inside.

Announcers keep making comments about settling for jumpshots. They must not have watched us before.

Richmond spreads the floor with a motion offense and POUNDS the ball inside. Guess they are a bit better than Fordham!!

I have to laugh listening to the announcers saying that we should use our "dribble penetration" game.... We are back into our standard mode of heaving up threes, missing, giving up the rebound and wondering why we are losing.... Down 5 with 8 minutes to go.... Just not sure we have the talent to defend the home floor.... BUMMER!!

And we were all questioned about the silence on the board after that win......now we know why the silence. Some of us are realists.

Is it really the lack of JS or are we just being outclassed on our home floor? Richmond does not really look that good, but they are hitting threes and many of their shots have had no business going in but they did.... IF we could have hit threes tonight, we could have won....

Watching these 2 teams. Both are allowed the same number of practices, and hours of practice per week.
Do you think their practices are similar in anyway?
I mean besides both will have a basketball, and a court...

We've hit rock bottom, rock bottom.
X with 4 legitimate basketball players is 5-0 in conf while we scratch ourselves when we play Colorado St in a home CBI buy game.

I've said it before, he's too good to fire. How can you fire a coach who has averaged 20+ wins for x number of years?

It would have been a different game. Never said we would have won but it would have been a possibility. The team with two NBA players won the game.
Get over it!
