Baseball analogy: yesterday I'm watching the Tribe. Bottom of the 9th, 4-0 White Sox. First batter: Ramirez. No one within 70 feet of 3rd base, he's batting left handed. Swings for the fences, hits it right into the teeth of the shift. Next batter: Lindor. Same thing. Next batter: Santana. Same thing.
The other team is literally giving you the only thing that will allow you to win the game, and giving it to you FOR FREE, and these guys would rather swing for the fences and try to get a meaningless solo home run than try to win the game.
Obi will never be that guy. When the right play is to pass the ball he'll pass the ball. When the right play is to take the foul he'll take the foul.

IMO the intangibles that Obi brings are unmatched. And those are resident in his other overall fundamental skills BECAUSE HE IS 22 and mature, not in spite of the fact that he is 22.
Just hope he goes to a really good team that needs one great player to work with the resident assets and make them instantly an NBA Finals caliber team. I realize the odds of that aren't good because of that team's likely draft position but it is possible with some trades. Like the Mavs or Bucks.
Whatever team he ends up with will instantly be measurably better.

They get paid for putting numbers up. A bunt hit to get base runners on means jack squat to these guys. Lindor up for a huge contract and Ramirez only 27 with another 1-2 years left on current contract means he'd rather get to 35 HR/95 RBI than win a game.

Yes, in the articles I have read many of the analysts think he has reached his potential, then they usually say but he is ready to contribute right away, as a positive. Coach Grant has said many times that he is scratching the surface.

No athlete has reached their potential at the age of 22. Typically they peak in the mid to late 20s and hopefully sustain their athletic gifts into their early 30s. Then as father time takes over, the mental IQ they acquire helps offset some of the athletic gifts they used to get them there.

Baloney- check out athletes like Jesse Owens, Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt just to cite a few who peaked around 22.

I think Medford was referring to basketball players. If you're 17, female, and into gymnastics -- you're also over the hill.

Phelps competed in 6 Olympic events at age 31 winning 5 gold and 1 silver
Bolt also became the only Olympian to win 3 golds in the 100m and 3 golds in the 200m with the 3rd ones coming at age 29

from looking around, physical decline varies dependent upon sports and obviously injury history plays a huge role with the individual, but as a whole, the mid 20s peak is real and can even be early 30s for endurance sports like marathon runners. Once you've peaked, its about sustaining that for along as you can and using knowledge to offset your physical decline.
The cream and the clear doesn't hurt either. Willie May may have been a Mets Legend if he had the cream and the clear

I don't understand the thought that Obi has reached his peak. Heck he's only been a big guy for what about 3 years. He's still learning how to be a 6'9 big guy. I wont be a bit surprised if he's the first pick in the draft.

Steve Kerr is equally an asshat, Obi could end up at Golden State. Let’s hope this doesn’t happen.

Wow, are people really such slaves to their political views? It's basketball! The two coaches folks said they don't want him to play for are Popovich (five NBA titles, all-time NBA leader in coaching wins), and Kerr (five NBA titles as a player, three as a coach). Who do you want him to grow and develop under .. the vaunted Jim Boylen? Lloyd Pierce?

It is not that people are "slaves" to their political views... it is that those 2 coaches use their platform to berate the President of the United States.
They make it so it is NOT about basketball.
Creates division... but I'm guessing that means nothing to you, because you have TDS.

I’m pretty confident that the same people criticizing me for being “slaves” to my political views, would be so tolerant and accepting of “far right”, outspoken NBA coaches. By the way, there aren’t any because they would be destroyed for expressing their views.

You use your platform to defend or berate the President too. You just don't have a big platform.
I would love to see Obi with the Warriors. I don't like the Warriors because they ruined what was already a really fun rivalry with the Cavs when they got Durant, but I think Obi would be a perfect fit with their team. I want him to go somewhere where he can succeed and become an NBA mainstay.

Regardless of the coach's political views, I wouldn't mind Obi going to Golden State either
I stopped following th NBA much post-Kobe, as it felt like most rivalries were gone (with players/stars moving between teams so often).
But... whether you love them or hate them, GS was becoming that team to follow again (until injuries caught up with them).
I am biased when it comes to UD, but I honestly think that Obi has the abilities and the off-court demeanor to become the star of his generation.

NCKEVI... I wasn't the person who started talking politics, mine was a response.
But when I saw the hipocrasy in your post (keep politics off the board, but has a signature line about politics), I understand why you responded to my post instead.

Ain't it just like that being a UD fan. As soon as we have the opportunity to root for someone in the NBA, I no longer give even a semblance of a hot da*n about them anymore. Won't watch a single game this year.
Even for you Obi. Sorry. Hope you have a great career and do us proud.

Really? This is your argument and comparison?
All pro sports have for a long time outlawed free speech on the field, equipment etc. and have consistently said it has no place in the game. Now all of a sudden it isn’t only allowed it is sanctioned and saying anything Innocently against ( see Drew Brees) this sanctioned mantra will get you berated and bullied from the highest level ( also see Hong Kong and NBA ).
Sports talk shows and networks have consistently stood for sports to be a refugee from the troubles In the world - politically and philosophically specifically - see Tim Tebow.
Neither Trump nor the business or entertainment worlds have ever had this hypocritical flip flop.

SMH. You really have terrible takes. How many of those guys competed in the olympics at the age of 23,24 or 25 so that we can compare? You do realize that if you show the world how great you are in the Olympics at the age of 22, you won't get another chance until the age of 26 and then the age of 30. No, I doubt you do.

There are exceptions to every rule. Given the progress that I saw from his redshirt practice until the end of last season, I thought Obi was that exception. A late bloomer with lots of potential still.

I know there are. Everyone is different and Obi growth spurt means he had to learn how to play as a big in a short amount of time, so I'm sure the ceiling is still to come.
I just thought it's ridiculous to use 3 examples, ALL OLYMPICS, to say that "here are guys who peaked at 22" when they can only show how great they are every 4 years, and mainly in sports that experience can't make up for diminished athletic skill due to age.

Generally, skills increase as you age. Generally, physical abilities decrease as you age. Speed/leaping peaks in late teens or early 20s. Strength peaks a bit later. Most sports depend on a combination of skill and physical abilities.
In baseball, batters peak in late 20s. Pitchers peak in early 30s. I guess pitching a bit more skill-dominant than hitting.
In basketball, players tend to peak in mid-20s. It's more dependent on physical abilities than baseball. Unfortunately, even a lot of first-round draft picks flame out quickly. Basically showing that they didn't cut it at the NBA level in the first place (not that they were already past their peak). But if Obi can clear the bar to become a regular player, he should have no problem playing for at least 6 years. Of course, if his skills grow considerably, he can extend that out to age 35 or so.

These recruiting reps for these NBA teams would be fools to pass on Toppin.
The only excuse would be if they picked a 7 foot center type that they feel is a lead-pipe cinch.

Reminds me of Greg Oden being taken at #1, 1 spot ahead of 10-time All Star Kevin Durant.

For those of you with ESPN+, I came across this excellent video that I wanted to share. Geno Auriemma is doing video analysis of some of the expected draft choices and, of course, he did one on Obi. The level of detail that he points out is incredible. Things that during a game you never notice but he, because of his years of experience, notices and shares with the viewer really makes you appreciate the greatness of Obi even more than before. He raves a LOT about Obi and, at the end, he says he wishes he could coach a lot of Obi Toppins. I also think this speaks highly about the coaching and teaching that Coach Grant and his staff provide to the players. Obi wouldn't be thinking about and doing some of the things that are spotlighted (literally) without AG's wonderful tutelage. If you don't have ESPN+, you might consider getting a month's access just to watch this ~18 minute video.

Sporting News released their latest NBA Big Board. I won't spoil it but you might want to look near the top.

Dang....this has been a long time coming. Just wanted to send a shout out to Obi that the entire Flyer Nation is with you next week. Life doesn’t always play fair and you’ve had a couple bumps in the road to no fault of your own. You’ve handled everything in a class manner - above and beyond how most 20 year olds handle adversity. It’s why we all love you and wish you nothing but the best. You gave us your best for 3 years at UD. We are all with you next week and beyond. Continue to enjoy the ride and make us proud of the man you’ve become. It’s a good day to be a Flyer!

I can't believe I'm promoting ESPN, but you're really missing out on this one. Unbelievable amount of content for a very low price. If you have kids and/or want Hulu you can get those two and Disney + for like $12. Pretty amazing.

Admittedly I pay little to no attention to the NBA, Obi will change that, so the last I knew it was October 15. How long ago did they change it again?

Apparently not. I thought it was in October...next week. The good news...instead of being a day late and dollar short I’m a month ahead on this one.

Interesting story in the NY Daily News. The New York City area hasn't had a top 5 NBA draft pick in 20 years. Obi could break that string this year.

Quite a "hotbed." Thankfully the A10 has Fordham there. Can't let them sneak away from the A10.

I wonder how much COVID will affect the future of even things like this. What I mean, is Allie and CAG probably live roughly 20 min apart, if that. A long form sit down interview, under normal conditions would be as easy as you could get. But as people get used to not only doing things virtually, but watching interviews like this that are done virtually, will that trend continue after all this?

Dang, awesome read. There are a number of money quotes in there, but this one needs to be hung on the walls for all recruits to see:
"I visited a few different college programs, and they all had certain things I liked. But then I went to this place I’d never been before in Ohio. It was called Dayton.
And I never wanted to leave."
