South Florida grad transfer Troy Holston has committed to St. Joe's, per a source. Immediately eligible. Should be Hawks' replacement for Nick Robinson.

Visualizing the decline of the A10 using KenPom ranks. The top, middle, and bottom are all getting worse:

4-10 has especially declined. 11-14, only a little (of course, when you’re already at the bottom, it’s hard to go down). 1-3 have declined a bit, but are still competitive. But having the #4 in triple digits? Yikes!

Several writers/sites making A10 predictions for this year in the below link.
I think we were picked 6, 7, 7, 7, 8, 8, 10, and 10.

The picks are not that surprising.
I think most of us think we know better. The potential is there for us to be better at almost every position 1- 9. But will it materialize and is it enough better? We have the whole ooc to get better and be ready for the A10. Nobody on the outside is going to factor that much improvement in. I see us fighting for 3 to 5.

Duquesne freshman Sincere Carry looks like the best freshman in the Atlantic 10. 12.2 PPG, 5.8 APG, 4.1 RPG, 2.8 SPG. Kid is a stud.

I went to the DUQ vs. GW game over the weekend. Sincere Carry is very good. He is a great passer, drives to the hoop well, and he has an outside shot. He still needs to work on the decision making. Some of his passes are we a little reckless, but other real quick touch passes got DUQ easy points and helped them build an early lead. He is both creative and confident.
At one point GW cut the Duquesne lead to 3 and Sincere Carry, despite some good defense from GW, took his time and calmly sank a shot to quiet the crowd. I don't know every freshman in the A-10, but Jon Rothstein might be right.

I’ll give you that Carry is a he!uva player, who’ll give our backcourt a really tough matchup. But between him and Obi, I’ll take Obi because (to paraphrase John Wooden) you can’t coach a guy to be tall.

I am wondering if the rise of VCU has increased the pressure on Richmond to step it up. Local competition always seems like a good thing to me, local competition can bring a lot of pressure to keep up with your neighbors.

I have a friend at the gym down here who is a long time Richmond alum and supporter. He said that last year Mooney was toast except he pulled out some rabbits at year end. He says this year he is done.

IIRC, Mooney has a sizeable buyout, I get the sense he would have been fired several years ago if not for that buyout/remaining contract.

Mooney was hot there for a while a few years ago.
IINM, he was offered an ACC hc job, Wake Forest? in 2013?, which he turned down.
In hindsight, he should have taken the job, as that was his opportunity to move up to the p5 level.
Showing loyalty to UR like that may also explain how he has been able to hold on for this long, the UR administration gave him around a 10 year contract extension after that I think.

There's some deep, deep pockets at Richmond. They've got a 2 billion dollar endowment and they're plugged into some old tobacco money

Mooney signed a 10 year extension in 2011 thru 2021 after turning down the GT job.
And then GT proceeded to hire BG. I did not remember that.
Mooney through the years also apparently turned down BC, Seton Hall, and Miami.

Very hard to recruit to Richmond. It is an upper crust little school that will make some prospects feel uncomfortable. Then you add in their close by neighbors, VCU and UVA, and Mooney struggles. The school is similar to the Davidson situation, but they do not have Mckillop or the Stephen Curry factor.

A10 board is apparently saying that UR will owe Mooney $3.6 million if they fire him this year.

Looks like it will be a case of “put up or shut up” if the Richmond supporters want Mooney gone. That’s a fairly big nut to crack for a program with somewhat limited resources.

There is a lot irony here IMO...CM was what all the mid-major schools want: a successful hc who spurns all the p5/high-major offers and stays put...except this time, after he cashed in with the big, long-term contract from UR, he then hits the skids, and now all the UR fans rightfully want him to hit the bricks.
He was the Mark Few of Richmond in 2011.
In the 2011 offseason, he was hot, coming off of back-to-back ncaat appearances, one of which was a Sweet 16 in 2011, the other a round of 64 appearance in 2010.
He turned down multiple p5/high-major offers.
Sometimes things do not work out despite all signs indicating that they will work out.
There is no such thing as a sure thing.

If the "billboard fans" don't step up, they can dip into their 2+ billion dollar endowment.

I wonder if St. Joe will get all the flak UD received when they parted ways with Donoher in 1989. The talk then was that all the bad press UD got by firing a "legend" severely limited the pool of candidates willing to take the UD job.

Brent Mussberger had a radio show back then and spent a good chunk of it railing at the UD administration for firing Donoher. I remember him starting off saying their memories were short and recalled the ‘84 and ‘85 back-to-back NCAA runs and Elite 8. It also came just a season or two after Donoher flirted with an offer to coach Navy. I think he had a son at Annapolis at the time. In retrospect, he might have been a perfect fit there.

Makes you wonder who would want to be an assistant in that program, if they are going to fire their head coach next year anyway. And, if McCall doesn’t get better results next year, I would think he’d be gone.

Huggy Bear wanted the job. At the time Huggins was at Akron and asked Gerry Faust, Akron football coach, for a recommendation. Faust told him he couldn't do so.

St. Joe’s freshman Jared Bynum will transfer, a source tells @Rivals. Sit one, play three for the playmaking guard that averaged over 11 points and four assists last season
That's a blow for the start of the Lange era

While I agree the GW situation does seem a bit much, I'll never understand the claims of "PC nonsense." If it makes one person feel better, makes one person's day better, is it too much to ask to call Miami the Redhawks and not the Redskins? It takes next to no effort and could potentially make things better for someone else.

Or, some people can learn not to get triggered at EVERY LITTLE THING that they disagree with just to make themselves a victim. The helicopter parenting that created the everyone gets a trophy society has made us weak.

But this sounds like you're getting triggered the other direction? I don't care enough either way, so I generally take the same approach mentioned above that if it makes more people happy than upset, why not?
In this case, I generally agree with the law prof quoted in the article that the students seem to mischaracterize what is meant by colonial and mistakenly relate it to colonialism. But at the end of the day, I just don't care what GW's nickname is, so if the student body wants to change it, why should I get hot and bothered and stand in the way?

Well, nobody is calling their team the "mid 40s slightly overweight white guys who can't jump, wearing khakis and a polo and telling Dad jokes," so until they do, I can't empathize with the aggrieved.

So you are saying that things should change because one, or a small group will "feel better". Good example is Eastern Michigan university, changed their name from Hurons, honoring the local indian tribe, to Eagles. Nothing negative about honoring the tribe but some felt it was so away we go. Central michigan on the other hand kept Chippawas, honoring their local indian tribe. EMU administration was lacking in testiclular fortitude. Really tired of the perpetually offended snowflakes. I realize that at my age it is somewhat normal to look at the younger generation with a jaunticed eye. But even given that, a good portion of this generation is scarry, hopefully the ones with common sense will prevail.

Maybe the next time GWU or any other university is planning a tuition hike the board of trustees should ask the student body to vote on whether or not they want it...

How about George Washington Carver University??
George Washington was our A#1 Colonial...so shouldn't they change the name of the university, too?

You're equating colonials to redskins? Really?
Find me one person offended by colonial. Just one.
Did anyone ever find someone offended by the use of Orangemen when Syracuse used it?

Actually I think some Catholics were offended by the use of the term Orangemen. Orangemen were members of the Orange order, which is dedicated to defending Protestant civil and religious liberties (particularly in Northern Ireland). Founded in honor of William of Orange, who ousted Catholic James II in the Glorious Revolution (which included a daring crossing of the English channel, aided by divine intervention through the "Protestant wind"). The Glorious Revolution ended any chance at Catholicism being re-adopted as the state religion in England. Hence, the Orangemen are considered anti-Catholic.

Apparently, there were about 2,700 students at First President Of The United States University (54% of the 5,000 or so who voted) who were offended by it. Not that I would have been one of them.
Also, it would be interesting to see if there was demographic data available to see who voted to change it and who voted to leave it alone. Speaking strictly as a math nerd, it’d be interesting to see if there was a predominance of Majors that voted one way or the other, or if one side had a GPA that was higher by a statistically significant amount.

I'm offended by the word Flyers. Can we rebrand as the Gliders? It's sounds more peaceful, natural and less distruptive. Additionally, who care about history?
All in favor, please transfer to GWU or send your kids/grandkids there.

...so I propose a Syracuse-Norte Dame cage match to resolve this once and for all.
Seriously, people have way too much free time if they’re getting their panties in a wad over minutiae like which college mascot offends them the most.

Per Jon Rothstein at verbalcommits.com, St. Joe's wing Charlie Brown has declared for the 2019 NBA draft. This appeared on his Instagram page.
The 6'7" redshirt sophomore missed all last season from a fractured left wrist suffered during preseason practice which was initially only expected to cause a 3 or 4 week absence. He had a good season making the A-10 All Conference second team while averaging 19 pts. and 6.2 rebounds per game and 84.5% from the free throw line. He probably feels like he needs to strike while the iron is hot!
Obi has been talking about how great the Flyers could be next season so here's hoping he stays. Hope he listens to his mother who tells him he is not ready!

No doubt. Williams would probably have been consensus 1st Team All-A10 heading into next season, and a real candidate for conference POY. Since the decision was apparently mutual, it makes me wonder what was the dynamic of the situation.

I don't see this in the thread...it appears Pipkins is leaving UMass. Another blow to the conference.
Initially I thought the A-10 would be strong next year but it appears there is a leak in the bottom of the bucket.

Utah Valley hc Pope took the BYU job, maybe that is the reason for the transfer.
Pope played his first 2 years of college ball at Washington and his final 2 years at UK and was a 2nd round NBA draft pick who played in the league for several years.

Grady's stock was much higher last year at this time. I think 3 things have caused it to go down. First, he was hurt some this past season, second I think Peyton Aldridge allowed him to do more and third, Gudmundsson out played him this past season.

Many of these guys are just “declaring” to see what they need to work on and get evaluated by scouts. Charles Cooke did this after his junior year. It’s become pretty commonplace these days.

UCF F Myles Douglas is transferring to Saint Joseph's. @5MJD_ http://verbalcommits.com/players/myles-douglas …
St. Joes lost Lorenzo Edwards to the portal this week and a former commit Hakim Hart landed at Maryland
Gonna be a major rebuild there. At this point they might hovering around the bottom of the conference next year

Rhode Island's non-conference schedule for 19-20:
@JonRothstein
Home: Alabama, Providence, Western Kentucky
Away: at Maryland, at West Virginia
MTE: Two high-major games
David Cox is giving his team a chance to make the NCAA Tournament; a MUST if you've not in a power conference.

The coach at Fordham has done a decent job getting good players to Fordham. Unfortunately, the good ones transfer after a year. That has to be very frustrating to both the coaching staff and the 500 fans Fordham has.
