Stetson is expected to hire Dayton assistant Donnie Jones, source told @Stadium. Jones was previously the head coach at UCF — and recruited both BJ Taylor and Tacko Fall

Good recruiter. Hope he’s not the lead guy on McNeil. But best wishes to him.

Maybe AG will bring Martelli aboard. Kidding!

How often has a current UD assistant been hired as a D1 HC?
Can't think of any off the top of my head but I am sure I am missing some

Fly,

I know you were kidding but I immediately thought of bringing on Martelli as soon as he was let go. Donoher went to Indiana the next year. Why not, he would be a great bench coach. Not sure about recruiting though.

With Anthony Solomon already associate head coach, I’m not sure Phil would accept a lesser position. Actually, I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t snag another head coaching gig, if he’s willing to leave Philly.

Can't see Phil leaving Philly, especially at his age. If one would look up Philly in the dictionary the definition would be accompanied by a photo of Phil Martelli

I believe Coach Martelli would be a great addition to the UD staff, whether or not he'd leave Philly is another story Yeah, he is a Philly guy, but so was Cronin (and at SJU to boot) and perhaps he could be persuaded to come to UD; my understanding was he enjoyed his trips to the Arena and thought very highly of the Flyers.

I would take Coach Martelli in a minute! Not only is he a very good coach, he is a class act. It has been hard for him to compete with the Power 5 conferences for the Philly talent. Bring him on board - he also knows the A-10 as well as anyone.

Why didn't Steson just hire one of their own assistants? It is the most logical and wisest thing to do.

Well, first, Donnie Jones was only on the staff this year so kind of hard to blame him for the first year. Second, I guess you believed UD belonged in the tournament this year. I've asked this before of you and others: what did you base this expectation on? Never have heard your reasoning. Please enlighten me.

Your missing the point, I NEVER MADE THE ORIGINAL COMMENT, IM NOT THE ONE WHO SAID IT IS GREAT TO HAVE HIM ON STAFF CAUSE IT REALLY HELPS US, all I did was point out his comment got us to the NIT

In all honesty UD had a very misleadingl record, it looked good on paper but we played a bunch of garbage teams this year, at the end of the story AG I think lost almost every crunch game we had this year, we had 6 big non conference games and he went 1-5 and the win was against a sub .500 team, my expectations are a top 40 team with its name in the dance at least every other year, AG has a proven track record that he cannot achieve that, he has one appearance in 8 years and you people act like he is the greatest, are my expectations too much or wrong?

Is UD’s “misleading” record the reason for welching on your 20 win bet? Also, your expectations are typically way off base and wrong.

While I agree with your expectations overall from a macro level, did you ever consider changing your expectations based on reality? The reality over AG's first two years: Year one he lost several recruits from the previous coach. That happens to almost every new coach. Also, he had one starter returning from the prior year and that player was hurt for most of the prior season. One senior-Darell Davis--hardly a "go to guy who will get you to the NCAA. Any REASONABLE person would conclude the cupboard was bare. Year two he has ONE senior starting, a player who hadn't played the year before, an undersized forward, and two sophomore guards. One of his players gets hurt after seven games Also, because he needed to clear out a bunch of dead wood, a very thin bench this year.

So here we are. AG has recruited three transfers from Power 5 conferences, an all league player from a lesser conference, he only loses one player to graduation and another transfers. So, he now has 5 players he didn't have last year (if you include Matos). Are you bashing the recruiting? If so, based on what evidence? Here's my evidence these guys COULD BE pretty good: Jordy started many games in the Big 10, Chatman averaged 15 points a game, Watson was recruited to Michigan-a perennial top 15 program- and by all accounts is bringing it every day in practice, and Johnson was a top 100 recruit. Again, what is your evidence AG hasn't done well recruiting?

One could argue AG has made a few in game decisions that maybe weren't the best but maybe, MAYBE that accounts for one game per season.

Oh, BTW, of those six non conference games two were against teams still playing. And two others made the dance. Again, back to your expectations (re-read reality above) you really expected UD to win those games?

So can we agree on this now that the roster is “stacked” and AG is the greatest coach in the world, anything beyond making the dance the next two years is unacceptable?

I would agree with all of this other than your sarcastic remark about AG being the greatest coach in the world.

The only caveat is injuries. If more than one player is lost for an extended period of time, I (being a REASONABLE person) might change my expectations.

Back to our regularly-scheduled diatribe.

Congratulations, Donnie Jones. Best wishes for your success at Stetson (as long as you’re not playing an A10 team, especially our Flyers).

As I posted previously, I was agnostic on the Grant hire when it happened. Not impressed with AG being fired at Bama, but recognized the quality of the alum we were bringing back.

His first year sucked, but as we’ve come to learn, there were deeper issues on that team that AG made the decision to squash at the expense of maybe a few wins. I can’t speak for other Flyers, but I had relatively low expectations this year as a combined result of last year’s performance, the short/young bench, and plethora of unknowns. I was expecting modest (0.500) improvement with the hope that by year three we’d be contending again for an A-10 championship and the NCAAs. I tempered the excitement on this board around the transfers of Watson & Chatman against the realization that we had no size. Then we landed Jordy & Sissoko and it became clear AG was building something. Then our team showed chemistry in the Bahamas that was sorely lacking last year. Yes, we only beat a middling Butler, but we were very competitive against a Final Four club and another solid Big XII squad. You are correct, we lost our at large hopes when we failed to seize the obvious opportunities against MSU, Tulsa, VCUx2, and URI. However, this team actually won on the road, did not fold down the stretch, and showed a fighting penchant that made them an easy team to get behind. Adding Johnson was the proverbial rabbit from the hat and suddenly a team that had no depth this year was worried about keeping guys happy with playing time next year. Losing a first round NIT game was disappointing, especially considering how the bracket wound up playing out—we could easily be in NYC right now. However, only the biggest pessimist could fail to see that things have changed for the better since last March.

I’m not giving AG a 20 year blank check, but I believe we are going to be very good next year and maybe for several years after that. You’re entitled to your pessimistic view, but please try to look at things somewhat objectively.

OK, you’re not a troll. You’re just a guy who doesn’t like AG. And a guy who’s entitled to his opinion. And if that’s all you were, I’d be fine with it. Different opinions make this board interesting.

But you’re also a guy with the disposition of Debbie Downer. A guy who turns civil discourse into civil war. A guy who makes lousy predictions and then makes excuses rather than admit he was wrong. A guy who makes a bet but is too dishonorable to pay it off when he loses.

Not exactly high character material. I truly hope you’re a better man away from this board than than what we see here.

I see you don't respond to anyone who calls you out for not paying on the bet you lost - and you even changed the bet from your original post to improve your odds.

Crazy idea - pay up on the bet you lost. It wasn't that much money. I am sure your mom can loan it to you.

Stetson hired Donnie Jones in the offseason and the Hatters were picked dead last in the A-Sun.

Stetson is now one game out of first place in the league.

BTW, being talked about as a coach of the year candidate and the roster seems fine since we have a potential lottery pick and a #6 ranking.

But we all know udscott isn't counting.

Phil Martelli has been an assistant coach at Michigan this season.
Has anybody checked out SLU's fan board tonight since they lost to Duquesne by 14 for the second time this season?
There is a thread titled:
Crutcher Broke Our Season-- great posts. I broke out my tiny violin. But all I can say is we BETTER beat them Saturday.
There were 7 games with ranked teams tonight and 4 of them lost.
Butler beat Nova 79-76 by pulling a Crutcher with a last second 3.
Providence beat Creighton 73-56
Vanderbilt (0-8 8-13 and 0-26 in conference games including losses last season) beat LSU by 9. 99-90
But the biggest shocker was Purdue annihilating #17 Iowa 104-68.
Any team can beat any other team.....You know the rest. That's what scares me at every Flyer game.

Donnie Jones and the Hatters (including assistant coaches Brett Comer and Joey Gruden) just punched their ticket to the tourney, winning the ASUN championship over Austin Peay.
