Smile WSOC: Seniors Shine in 6-1 Win Over St. Bonaventure

It took 42 seconds for Dayton to get on the scoreboard and less than four minutes to win the match as UD's Senior Day honored the graduating class with a 6-1 whitewash of St. Bonaventure on a cool but sunny afternoon at Baujan Field.

Alexis Kiehl recorded a hat trick but seniors Lesley Chilton and Alyson Smigel took advantage of starting nods with their first goals of the season. Fellow senior Nicole Waters chipped in three helpers to set the UD career assist record as Dayton improves to 8-9-0 (6-2-0) while the Bonnies fall to 5-10-2 (2-6-0).

Just seconds into the match, Waters crossed a near-post ball into the box that Kiehl one-timed past SBU goalkeeper Beth Moore to put the Flyers up 1-0 on their first goal-scoring opportunity.

Continued pressure near the SBU goal box forced the Bonnies to bunker after the restart, allowing UD to push players forward and find open seams for dangerous passes into free space. Chilton finished a combination in the middle to give UD a 2-0 cushion just 3:59 after kickoff, the senior's first goal of the season and the eventual game-winner.

The Bonnies were rattled by UD's fast start and did little over the next 10-12 minutes to turn the momentum of the match around. The Flyers used a solid tempo to maintain possession and serve balls to attacking players, in particular target forward Ashley Campbell, one of two Canadians alongside Waters honored on Senior Day. While Campbell never scratched on the scoreboard, she drew enough attention to open up opportunities for others.

Smigel knocked a ball home in the 16th minute on a short redirect deep inside the goal box to make the score 3-0 and effectively put the match out of reach.

In some respects, St. Bonaventure was fortunate to keep the score at 3-0 over the next 15 minutes as UD had several excellent chances inside the box to extend the first half lead even further. In the 32nd minute, the Bonnies found some momentum of their own with a long-ball counterattack along the right flank that beat the last defender and goalkeeper Kaelyn Johns with a well-struck slotted ball to the far post to cut the Flyer lead to 3-1. It was a relatively soft goal considering the overall run of play, but ended up being the only defensive mistake of the first half. SBU nearly scored on another shot just minutes later, but the short-range attempt nicked off the crossbar and resulted in a goalkick.

The last 15 minutes of the half included liberal Flyer substitutions that took some of the pace and work rate out of the Dayton offense. Halftime stats were in favor of Dayton in shots (16-7) and corner kicks (4-2).

Dayton's second half restart was strong enough to keep the Bonnies off the scoreboard, but just weak enough to keep the Flyers from generating consistent possession like the first half. To their credit, SBU picked up the pace and starting linking passes, taking advantage of overly-respectful marking in the Flyer defensive half of the field to do the best they could to make the match more competitive.

Kiehl would eventually commence the rout in the 55th and 60th minutes on a pair of finishes inside the box to make the score 5-1. Seniors Smigel and Chilton were credited with assists to go along with their first half goals.

Libby Leedom made it 6-1 in the 71st minute on a quality header to the back of the net, courtesy of a Waters corner kick from the right side. By our recollection, it was the first converted corner kick since the season opening match at Florida International - a span of nearly 100 corner kick attempts.

The seniors on the field eventually took curtain calls as they were subbed out to applause from the Baujan Field crowd. Megan Herr joined Chilton, Campbell, Waters, and Smigel before the match with a pre-game ceremony honoring their careers. Goalkeeper Jenna DiTusa played the last 24 minutes of the match, and further subs off the bench saw playing time as the Flyers salted the game away over the final 15 minutes.

Overall, UD registered a commanding 36-12 advantage in shots, including 21-5 on frame. Corner kicks were 9-2. The Bonnies were near the cellar of the A10 standings and looked the part for most of the afternoon. The Flyers did what they needed to do -- beat a poor team without any drama. Head Coach Mike Tucker may have preferred the shutout, but the opportunity to see his seniors carry the bulk of the scoring probably made up for missing a clean sheet.

The Flyers are attempting to continue their streak of 19 consecutive winning seasons -- one of the longest streaks of any non Power-5 school in the country. To do that, Dayton must run the table and perhaps also win the A10 Tournament. The conference is up for grabs this year and unlike past seasons, no team seems dominant and an obvious favorite. In other words, Dayton has a chance.

UD hosts Duquesne on Thursday in the final home match of the season.
