Would they come with a baggage handler? Because we’d certainly need one, for all the baggage they’d bring with them.

All I agree but 6'9 twins don't come along often. CAG can develop big men. We do not need another STATEN parent but we can't know that from a single article.

I will be very surprised if these kids transfer to a big time program as a package deal.
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
A program from a small conference might take a chance on a package deal though.

It would have been interesting to see how AG would have handled Staten and his dad. I have a feeling Staten would have been getting splinters in his behind.

Remember that BG was a first time head coach. I truly believe that how he handled the Staten situation was a large factor in him losing his job. I think he would handle things differently today.

Supposedly they’re headed to Georgetown
With 1 scholarship potentially if Obi leaves and 2 senior PGs next year I have to think the play is getting a PG

This makes sense with the major transfer exodus going on at Georgetown right now.
I agree in targeting a potential PG but we have to keep our eyes on bigs with Chase's concussion issues resurfacing.

Harvard's Seth Towns has decided to transfer. Will have 2 years of eligibility because of injury. The Ivy league only allows players to be eligible for four years. Won Ivy POY in 2018 averaging 16 and 5. 6'7" wing who shoots 44% from 3 on 5 attempts per game.

Dayton (as well as many others) offered him out of HS, choose Harvard over Ohio State and others....Don't know how well is knee is, but he was a high level recruit and talented young man.

That is not necessarily true anymore. Most athletes can return from most knee injuries in 6-8 months now. Even ACL's are closer to 6 months than 8 for college and pro athletes because of their access to rehab 24/7.

I guess it doesn’t matter whether he would be healed by start of next season...since he is now transferring, he would not be eligible to play until after the end of first semester.
He would be a great addition! AG saves a scholarship just for these types of situations.

OK...I see he missed both his Jr. and Sr. Year. I wonder if he would get two years of eligibility. I remember Evan Eschmeyer gained a 6th year for Northwestern due to two years of injuries.

I saw somewhere he should have 2 years of eligibility, but it was probably on Twitter so who knows. Would be interesting to have a Harvard grad on the Dayton team, but no complaints.

Why do you say that? I'm sure there are all kinds of grad programs out there that Harvard does not offer.

The Ivy league only allows player to be on a roster for 4 years. They do not grant waivers for injury or allow players to redshirt. If he wants to continue playing basketball, he has to leave the Ivy League.

We should pass. Why take a chance on an injured player who hasn’t played in 2 years when there are others healthy? Look at Chase as an example. Besides he’s a shooter and that’s not going to be our issue. We need defense and rebounding which are not his forte.

If healthy he would be the best player on our team next year. We will need to replace 19ppg, 11ppg, 11ppg, and 5ppg from our forwards that are leaving or left due to concussions. We currently are bringing in 3 guards and 1 forward. Towns is 16ppg, 6 reb while shooting 44% from 3 and 80% from the line. Even if he gives us 10 and 5 while shooting 40% from 3, those are needed numbers to replace what we are losing. And I watch a few Harvard games a year, and defense isn't an issue.

ESPN currently has SF 6'7" Seth Towns as #1 in the transfer portal for the 2020-2021 season. He is a graduate who would have two years of eligibility and would definitely fill a need we will have the next two seasons. The more games we continue to win and move up in the rankings the better our chances to recruit players of his caliber.

Saw that and just wondered if he was the type of kid to sit around for over a year before he would be able to play and be willing to play Grantball. Might think he is an NBAer. Also not sure we need another wing. I know he was a 5 star.

From what little I know about Towns, I hope we’re all over him. Smart enough to go to Harvard. Some length. Demonstrated basketball skills. As long as he’s a good fit for the CAG culture, he would seem to be a good on-court replacement for Chip next year.

The way CAG offensive scheme is getting praise nationally I venture to say most top transfers are going to take a hard look at Dayton. Throw in all of the offensive rankings which Dayton lead, a lottery pick and the overall team ranking any top player has to take a look. Now it's more like CAG and staff are the ones whom will be more of the choosers rather than being chosen. This will bold well in maintaining the team chemistry for future years.

Recruits want (not an exhaustive list obviously):
High-powered offense. Can't get much more high-powered than this one.
Ability to get recognized. All the love Dayton, and more specifically, Obi, have been shown this year proves that you can get it here. Just show them the clip of Obi with SVP, and highlights of college game day, and ESPN and CBS coverage for example.
Chances to get to the highest level professionally. Obi is prima facie evidence that you can do it at Dayton. Kostas doesn't hurt either.
A coaching staff that they love and respect. This seems to be in place and improving too.
A coaching staff that will remain intact throughout their college career. I don't see how you can prove this, but an alumni coach that is farther along in his career is close. Hopefully he wants to (and can convince recruits that he wants to) retire here.
A coaching staff that their parents love. I have a feeling that this staff makes a VERY good impression on parents.
A coaching staff that their HS and AAU coaches love. Again, this staff seems to be in good with many coaches (and hopefully the more scrupulous ones).
A great team atmosphere. True Team may not be a trademark anymore, but this and last year's teams have certainly achieved it. Now some players are not good team players, but hopefully the staff can filter those out. The ones that appreciate teamwork should find kindred spirits here.
Hopefully the momentum on the court can start an avalanche on the recruiting front. I wonder if Keon Ambrose is seeing Dayton's path so far and possibly having second thoughts (although Bama's future is looking bright under Nate Oats - they're a top offense this year too).

Lot to like about UD, especially these days.
But there's a lot to like about Kentucky, Duke and dozens of other schools as well.
I think Towns can go anywhere he wants.
Also, he's admitted to being a lifelong Buckeyes fan.
If we get Towns, it will be CAG's biggest recruiting victory. (Not saying he's the best player. Just the player with the most significant competition.)

At age 53 I don’t think AG is looking to “build” his career at a P5 or the NBA. I think he sincerely enjoys developing players and from day one he had no fear and believed he could go after and land Top recruits at Dayton. It’s still a work in progress to land the elite of the elite. Having Obi certainly will help pave the way in the future. That was not the case for Archie. AM thought he had to go to a P5 to get a shot at coaching the elite players. The jury is still out on this, but less than 3 years into it I can’t imagine any coach being farther along this path than what AG and staff have done.
AG also has a deep love for UD. We’ve had coaches say Dayton and the Flyer Faithful are special. We’ve had them talk up the support from the administration and the facilities and commitment they get. But when you hear AG talk of these things you can tell it’s not just coach-speak. He knows first-hand the value of the “culture” at UD. He knows it as a player. He now knows it as a coach. The off-season scheduling challenges that Neil and AG fought thru together built on their relationship. That hug in Maui was real. The hugs between coaches and players after the SLU game were real.
AGs two college-age kids are enrolled at UD. That is real. I’m sure his kids were aware of the college their dad played for and he probably spoke highly of his UD days. His two youngest could also attend UD, after all, they will grow up cheering for UD basketball. That’s a legacy that would take a lot to break up. I don’t see that happening unless there is an extreme circumstance.
It’s the people that make UD special and AG knows that. I think BG also knew that. The difference between BG and AG is AG has already done the mid-major step up to P5 (VCU to AL) and found the grass is not always greener.
You never know what the future holds, and things can change. But AG staying at a UD a long time shouldn’t be a hard sell to recruits and their parents - because it’s not coach-speak. It’s much deeper and real. AG isn’t just UDs men’s basketball coach...he’s family.

he had knee surgery, don't know if that equates to:
HAS a bad knee....
each situation is different, but
does Chip have bad hips, or had
bad hips...
let's say he is interested,
would we be allowed to have him
do some practice with our players when
he may visit, or would that be a violation?
still would not be the same as live game,
situation... but would we be able to work
him out for a bit?

He can attend but can't participate in practice. He can participate in open gym with the players, but coaches are not allowed at open gym.

A setback with the knee would be the only thing that keeps Towns from landing at a major program.
He's a grad transfer (so immediately eligible), but with *two* years of eligibility left.
Duke and Kentucky are used to going all out in recruiting for younger, less mature kids they know they're not getting 3-4 years out of.
Just because Towns isn't a lottery-pick type talent doesn't mean the competition for him won't be as fierce.

Is there any evidence he is interested in UD or that UD had been in contact with him? Or is this more - he is from Ohio and that is where all the smoke is coming from?

I'm not aware of any evidence of either.
Yet some seem to think it's a no-brainer for him to want to come here.

I don't know of anyone thinking it's a
no brainer... this is a discussion site,
so we are discussing...
I personally think if I am Towns, and
know UD is nr 7 with the most efficient
offense in college basketball, I most
certainly would consider it....
but ultimately, like every decision
I trust Coach Grant....
it is though, a no brainer to think
we are something he would NOT consider..
can't speak for anyone else, but that is IMO...

Kobe King transferring from Wisky. Four star 6-4 RS Sophomore SG. Could have two years & immediate eligibility with a waiver. Second leading scorer this year for the Badgers.

What is up with kids leaving this time of year? If they were going to transfer why not do it before this semester started, or wait till end of the season. Why quit now on your team mates, especially when your getting the PT and putting up the numbers these two were.
Unless one hell of a reason for their quitting mid-season that we may never know, I would want neither of these two as team mates, or in this case as Flyers.

Unless there is more to the story than being reported, I want absolutely nothing to do with this kid. I get you think you may not be the right fit, but leaving the team now is quitting on your team and teammates. Leaving now, you still have to sit out all of next season unless you get a waiver. You are the second leading scorer and second on minutes on a team that is a bubble NCAA team. It looks way worse leaving now and quitting on your team than waiting 2 months and doing it. Like I said, unless their is more than being reported, this is nothing but extreme selfishness.

There we problems with Jordy and the Nebraska coach from what I have read. They totally changed styles and the main coach that recruited him left. Also, Jordy was no longer a starter and main contributor to the team like Kobe.

A lot of time spent on here talking about Koby King and Dontrell Shuler who are both guards! Both are leaving their teams under auspicious, unknown circumstances. Do you think any of our players this season would quit on their team or their teammates in the middle of the season?
Someone like 6'7" SF Seth Towns who seems to have done everything right and from the outside looking in seems to fit CAG's culture is who we should be pursuing. With all the experience he has from Harvard he would fit right in!

What if we had given up on Chip because he had two hip surgeries and we didn't know if he could play any more? Also, what if AG didn't take a chance on Rodney Chatman on the transfer market? After all he already had a good PG/SG in Jalen Crutcher who he took a chance on who, the year before, changed his commitment from Chattanooga.
AG and his assistant coaches know talent! The reason the Flyers are so good this season is that besides the players mentioned above AG also took a chance and recruited one Obi Toppin who didn't get a lot of interest in high school. Regardless of whether Seth Towns hasn't played in x number of days doesn't mean we shouldn't take a chance on him. ESPN must know something by making him #1 so far in the 2019-20 transfer class! After all, there were over 500 listed in last years 2018-19 list!

plus, when and if he visits
he would be able to play an open
gym with our players....
they could give feedback later
to Coach Grant and let him
know how he looked....
at the very least, YES
bring him in for a visit....
I care not where in Ohio he is from,
or what his favorite team growing
up was....
we are the best team in Ohio,
with what will be two NBA draft players
recently adding Obi..
and the nation's most efficient offense
by far....
yes, he would be interested....

The same people that took a chance on Chase Johnson? Sure some work out but there are also the Ryan Bass’, Matt D, Detwon Rogers- etc., hope we do a lot of due diligence before signing on a high risk prospect.
And we didn’t have a choice with Ryan - he was already on the payroll. As for counting on ESPN- sheesh, they have no accountability, and who made the #1 call and what are his qualifications??

Look at this way. If Towns is healthy, he's an impact player. If you grab a JUCO instead, you're taking a risk he can make an impact in D1. Different kind of risk but a risk all the same

As soon as I saw OSU's post, I thought to myself, Maddog is going to trash this kid. And right on cue a few minutes later.

looks like he is more a facilitator..
as a freshman he was 17th in the nation in assists..
don't know why he isn't listed on stat
leaders this year, but his 7.8 would lead
the nation in assists... set an NCAA Div 1
record this year in one game with 24 assists,
breaking Trae Young (spelling?) record...
I have no idea about him...
so, I trust Coach Grant whether he
sees anything or not...
Go Flyers!

He only played in 18 games, so he may not have qualified.

American East Conf = MEAC
FWIW, at 19.6 ppg, the MEAC's leading scorer is John Crosby.

How do you average those kind of points, rebounds and assists, and only make the 2nd team? Must either be a head case or plays 0 defense (or both)

The America East is a step up and he scored 25 points on Notre Dame as freshman on 11-18 shooting as a freshman. Put 23 on Pitt this year
Hit 8 3s in game
I think there's more than Crosby here

He wouldn't fit at UD. 41.5% FG and 31.5 3FG. Is a volume shooter. That is not the Grant way.

I think Anthony is very careful about players. UD with CAG is not for everybody.

@mzenitz
Two Vanderbilt basketball players have entered the transfer portal — Matthew Moyer, a former top recruit who transferred to Vanderbilt from Syracuse, and Oton Jankovic
UD recruited Moyer when he transferred from Cuse

IIRC, Moyer is from the Columbus area, played HS ball @ Gahanna with Nick Ward (MSU) I saw him for a bit at FTP way back when, I remember being surprised he was a Syracuse commit, he was long and lanky, don't know how he's done stat wise, but i could see UD being an option for him. Close to home and there is a hole at the 4 spot.
edit: Looked up the stats, not very impressive. However he only has 1 year left, so if UD had an unfilled opening, they could do worse assuming he's not a head case.

The nation’s leading rebounder is on the move. Quinnipiac forward Kevin Marfo is grad transferring — averaged 10.2 points and 13.3 rebounds this season.

13th in the nation in double doubles...
