UAB Game Thread
Time to close out the non-con strong with a victory Saturday night vs. UAB... Shake off that tough loss and get back at it... I still believe this team can be really good in the A-10 season.
UAB lineup:
G 3 Terence Jones 6’2” 185 SR Baltimore, Maryland
G 5 Robert Williams 6’4” 210 JR Greenville, Mississippi
F 42 Rod Rucker 6’5” 220 JR Elberton, Georgia
F 44 Jordan Swing 6’6” 200 JR Birmingham, Alabama
C 15 Fahro Alihodzic 6’10” 240 JR Vlasenica, Bosnia
Go Flyers!

Think Devon Oliver's elevation has improved by a foot from last season when he was coming off the illness. Amazing how good it's gotten, and amazing how long it took to get healthy.

Some teams just dont play zone. If you never use it hard to put it in for one opponent.
If you use it, I sure would against UD.

Glad to get the W, and to close out the out of conference games with 10 wins, but with VCU on Wednesday to open the A-10, I really, really wanted to see a consistent, strong game.

We better be able to defend the pick and roll better and the three point shot. VCU has a kid who has made 9 and 11 threes in his last two games.

Sanford looked good again. This is the Vee we need. Gets in the lane and converts. Gets to the line. Makes open 3's. He shoud be a 16 point/game contributor --consistently.

Go back and check the video. I posted the comment in or around 8:29 PM. Prior to that time he missed three passes from KD, kicked the ball and generally demonstrated little experience or confidence. Within three minutes he scored 2 of 3 baskets (primarily due to KD's passing) and my comment began to look suspect. His play throughout the rest of the game improved and as a result was named player of the game.
Despite all of this we had better improve over the course of the next three days or we are in for a rough run in the beginning of conference play.

UD is much better on offense when Sanford scores and when patient. If Dillards back means he is going to shoot 10% from the field it will be a real grind when Sanford is off.
Gotta get some points out of the 3 position. Another zippo for Pierre.

Pierre did have 5 rebounds and only 1 turnover in 18 minutes, but how can a guy that went off like a rocket a few games ago for 23 or so have another zero point game?
Plus, why no Scott at all? Is he sick? Hurt? Zero minutes? I didn't think he was a head case. From what I have seen in his limited playing time he looks at least in the Gav/Kav range of talent. Why so deep in the doghouse? He needs some in-game experience. Why zero? Any inside info? At this point, I fear a transfer and what a waste that would be. We need a Nate Green type defender/rebounder and I thought Scott could be it.
Anyway, a win. Better than the Weber and Illinois debacles, but I'm not real optimistic if they come out with this kind of performance against the next 2 opponents.
(I still predict, at this point, 26-4.)
Things can click into place mid season, just like my 67-68 Flyers. 7-9 turned into something like 25-9. It can happen.
But really, what's the deal with Scott?

Tirebiter, I have no idea. From what litttle I can see from a distance, his attitude looks good enough. When DMO fouled-out at USC last Sunday, he took a seat next to Scott, and the 2 looked like they were talking about their general frustration with the officiating. An attitude case probably wouldn't have given a rat's @$$ about that situation, but Scott & DMO seemed to be talking it over like good teammates.
It's too early for me to be able to tell what puts a player in Arch's doghouse. Last year, the roster was so thin that everyone on scholarship got a chance. This year, it's clear that Scott's in that doghouse, but we generally aren't sure why. All I can guess is that it's either academics or practice habits, and that's a guess from someone who goes to games, chats on this board, and is no closer to the program than that. Given that he's a frosh, either explanation would be plausible.
And now...on to conference play!

I watched Scott last night, who was seated right next to the coaches on the bench. His attitude appeared to be good with congratulating other players going on and off the floor and seemingly pulling some aside for words of encouragement. I would love to see the guy getting some minutes too. I have no idea what might be going on.

I'm still an optimist for the season, and I consider 20 wins optimistic. But last night left a sick feeling when we finished the game like we did. We coughed up an 11 point lead that we were holding with 80 seconds left. 30 seconds later we are ahead by 5 with plenty of time to choke the game away. Showed clearly why we have lost 1 & 2 point games. We simply do not value each possession when it counts late in the game. UAB got better in the last 5 minutes and we did not.
The good news is that our guys know to find Dillard to shoot the clinching freethrows. There were other seasons when we didn't do that and the wrong players were trying to close out a game at the freethrow line.

After we had the 16 point lead, I think we took something like four 3s in a row (of course missed them all) and the took another one after a misses 2 pointer. I would have liked to seen Archie take a timeout after the first 2 (like he did quickly after the start of the first half) and explain what they should and should not be doing at that point.

As the roster gets stocked not everyone will get minutes. Archie seems to prefer something lik a 9 man rotation. I would get used to 3 guys not seeing the court most nights.
My understanding is Scott is not in any doghouse. He has yet to grasp the nuances around where to be and timing on the court. Pretty common for a freshman big. And he has 4 guys ahead of him in the rotation.
If he starts getting minutes it either clucked or Archie concluded they are going nowhere and is playing for next year.

Flyers still struggle with the nuances of zone offense. Guys don't have the coordination of flashing into the high post as the wing receives the pass. the flash tends to occur too late.

Two of our issues are a bit of mystery to me. One is no one seems to have the guts to take over the high post and look for cutters or kick outs. The second is our woeful attempts at setting screens and having two players execute the play properly. That's gradeschool stuff.

playing in the high post in the middle of the zone, has to do with skills. You need the ability to pass, shoot the jumper and attack off the bounce. It is why Pierre is by far the best player to fill that role.

Somebody show them video of Notre Dame on how to keep the ball moving. Get anything close to that and zone offense improves exponentially. Gotta have three or four guys to knock down shots.
