Lets stop talking about selection Sunday. If you lose to Savannah State you don't project to the NIT.

In all seriousness, Paul Williams has really impressed me so far this season. He's been able to score, draw a foul, get a defensive stop, etc. when needed.

Those interested, Savannah State will play UC on Wednesday night, and that game will be on Fox Sports Ohio. Will be interested to see if the Tigers give UC any kind of game. I'm guessing not.

"If Savannah State doesn't score they can't win."
"Blackmon instead of Blackman."
You only get that insight from the Dayton radio crew.

I love CW, but it's amazing to me that after 3+ years, he still is more often than not WAY too strong on those runners to the hoop down the right side of the lane.

If we had made free throws this game would be over. A poor performance regardless but at least we'd have a comfortable lead.

From the top of the key, Wright can drive on his man every time. Unfortunately, he's not making his shots. A few three-point plays would be huge in this game.

Good foul by CJ. Now we have to rebound.
Actually it was too early in the clock.

Every close game this year...no matter who it is; makes this team better when it comes crunch time.
Not that I want it to come to that alot...but its good to know this team can gut it out when it matters.

Schedule...
Aren't these the same Flyers that staggered off a plane in the middle of the night about 36 hours ago? They're young....but I'll bet that if this game was played on Wed night it would not have been a squeeker.

Wow, that was one ugly win, but in the end, a W is a W.
Let's just hope we can take care of business the rest of the week.

Just like in March, so good practice preparing for games with very short turn around time now.

Brooks Hall just put things in perspective "we avoided a bad loss". Amen
We won the trap game and I bet we show up on Wed. I wish I could be at tomorrows practice

If I'm Nourse, Zestermann, Asmus, and Vonderharr I'm ticked off right now. The walkons are supposed to get into these games!

We can joke about it now!! Take the Win and run. Between the Flyers and my Jets I'm living off of some pretty good end-of-game Karma right now!

I'm sorry but that can't be used as an excuse. Tough or not you have to beat this team by 20.

Come Selection Sunday!
Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but there is no such thing as a bad win (from an RPI perspective) only a bad loss!
String together some good wins and nobody remembers this game in two weeks. We beat Florida Agriculture and Mining (makes them sound like ITT) and UC and every one is talking about how we won this quasi tournament.
We played 5-7 great defensive possessions down the stretch or this thing would have ended differently.
This is a teachable moment for BG that doesn't hurt us.

Doesn't hurt us? Speak for yourself, I aged 10 years tonight and I only watched the second half.

the frustrating part was not that they came out flat, it was the fact that after they got up 7 (48-41) they let off the gas again. Not sure the last time they missed so many shots near the rim.

Youth
Buckeye, I agree that these young kids could play a game every day....every day so long as they got a decent night's sleep in their own beds.
Not to suggest for a moment that I was ever anthing like UD's skilled BB players. But, I did play varsity BB for four years while in HS. One game that I recall in particular was scheduled for a Sunday afternoon at about 2:00....I was an 18 year old senior.
On Saturday I was visiting my girl friend who lived about 20 miles away. That night the weather was horrible, ice, snow, the works. I stayed over at her house with the "certain' knowledge that the next day's game would be cancelled...and I didn't get to bed until about 1:30-2:00 AM.
Only the game wasn't cancelled. I had no trouble getting back Sunday morning....20 miles is a short ride. But, to this day I vividly recall how poorly I felt and how I played after about 5-6 hours sleep. It wasn't pretty.
Now it seems to me that the Flyers may have gotten little or no sleep Saturday night. If so, even if they didn't do anything serious Sunday it seems to me that it would take more than a day to fully recover from the events of the weekend. Just an opinion.
Someone said, "and they play again Wed". That doesn't bother me...they are kids in good shape and by Wed they will have had three nights in their own beds. I'm confident they will be fine Wed....and having won tonight by a hair, it might be a valuable "teachable moment" for the freshmen.

You may mean our "Towson" game last year. Down 18 with 9 minutes to go and pulled it out. It was that big of a head-scratcher

If you look at the box score, it's apparent that we won the game by the amount of shot we took from the FT line. It's borderline lucky to be able to shoot 22 more FTs than your opponent. I didn't see the game, so can someone comment? Did we homer SS?

Flyers attacked the basket (they missed a boatload of shots inside 5 feet), Savannah shot jumpers.

One things for sure - whatever is ailing this team that we seem to start every game absolutely flat is going to have to be fixed in a hurry.
We can't hold a friggin candle to last years defensive effort - which is suprising given this is one of Gregory's points of emphasis. We look lazy, slow and uninspired. While the better teams blow out opponents by 20-30, we let a team hang around till the last shot. Heck, we even left Mount St Marys and Akron in the game for much of the time.
There is a real pattern developing here and I don't like it at all. Fix the problems now before things get very ugly. I want to see the hustle and desire that we know these guys can play with and I want to see it from the get go. Not in the last 10 minutes of the game.

reminds me a lot of last year. The Flyers came out poorly most games in the first month of the season (Creighton, Nova, KSU, Towson, Miami) they were behind double digits in all of those games last year.

CW was out of control and off balance on both offense and defense most of they night just like at Ole Miss. He even got yanked at the beginning of the 2nd half after he got back cut for a layup.
For most of the night the Flyers seemed to think they could run their offense by throwing a pass or two and setting a ball screen. They kept trying to drive into gaps that weren't there. Sorry guys but you have to get the defense moving if you want driving lanes. If was a complete lack of focus on the task at hand.

I agree with Sea Bass. Also, D was almost nonexistent last year for the first month or two of the season. And this was a team of returning players who excelled in D the previous year. Hard to figure.

if PW hadn't locked up Shuler in the 2nd half, Shuler didn't get a single good look the entire 2nd half, the Flyers would have lost. I am beginning to beleive PW may be the most necessary player on the team because he is the only lockdown defender they have.

We built that 7 point lead with CW on the bench. This team has played it's best basketball in the Ole Miss game and in tonight's game with him on the bench...hate to say it, but it's true. He's beyond out of control at this point and playing crappy basketball....stunning for an "all american" in his senior season.

I think Spearman and DMO will get there also, but it will take a while. Maybe the whole year and an off season.
A few things I noticed that contributed to the struggles:
- To my eye, the Flyers under BG do not recruit/develop/run offensive sets for post players. This was a game that really called for an offensive horse in the post to back down their skinny post players and go up hard. Searcy and Benson are good players, but they cannot do this. It was a weakness that we couldn't exploit.
- Juwan had his worst game of the young season tonight. I didn't see Ole Miss, but I'm assuming this was worse. He made some bad decisions out there and was indecisive at times. The play towards the end where he let the ball go out of bounds was telling. I think he became a bit unsure of himself as the game progressed. He'll get better.
- The vets weren't totally dialed in tonight, and the freshmen weren't ready to pick up the team. I thought the team suffered when more than one freshman was playing at a time. It had to be tough to go through your first ever road game, not practice the next day, and then face an opponent that a young player would probably discount and "expect" to beat. Now they know. If you ease off, you'll get beat.
- I thought Savannah St was well coached. Just like Mount St. Mary's, they threw everything at the Flyers to keep the pace of the game slowed and confuse our players. Lots of switching defenses and meticulous offensive sets. It's a bit gimmicky and won't work later on in the season once teams gel, but it was effective right now. BG likened their style to St. Louis in the pregame interview and I could see that. Those really are the toughest teams for us to match up with. If you set enough screens, our discipline will eventually break down.
But, I didn't really see anything that makes me pessimistic about the growth curve of the team this year. We play three freshmen and have two new point guards. They are going to play badly at times. I fully expect the team and the freshmen to look a lot better on Wednesday. They will have a bit more time to rest at home and probably get a really good practice in tomorrow. And they won't take Florida A&M lightly...

A win is a win is a win. I won't remember this game come the middle of December, let alone March. Ugly wins are wins just the same, even against uglier competition. We are fine. Lets keep the road/neutral court winning streak going. I don't care about ugly wins at home against supposedly inferior competition as long as we take care of business on the road. Everyone knows we win at home. Road wins like Ole Miss is where our bread is buttered.
