Talked to @DaytonMBB ocach Anthony Grant today about winning gold with Team USA, losing two members of the staff and his plans for the second summer session with the whole team on campus

Seems like the 18-19 Roster is done

That's gotta suggest confidence in Matos, Cohill, Obi and Frankie providing a solid bench

Sometimes you just have to roll with inexperienced players and hope for the best. Going forward with what they have seems like a better strategy than forcing a fit for a guy you might not want on the roster a year or two down the line.

Yes, he says all his players are here. Sounds like the roster is set and he has decided to go into the season with two unused full scholarships. To leave scholarships unused seems to be taunting fate. Over the years, we have watched the Dayton program and other programs be decimated by injuries (Cross my fingers) or other happenstances (cross my fingers) to reduce the number of available bodies.

On whether Dayton will add any players to the roster for the 2018-19 season: “I wouldn’t rule anything out. Obviously, you’re always keeping your eyes and ears open for what’s out there. we’ll see what happens.”
Doesn't sound like he considers the roster done. Doesn't mean he is for sure bringing in someone else, but he is still looking for more.
His comment about everyone being here, I took that to be more of a "all the current players are here". Which is different than "all of the guys who will play in 2018-2019 are here".

Well, we have 11 guys but two aren't eligible until next year, so we really only have 9 eligible and only one true PG. That is really rolling the dice. Any PG grad transfer could have been useful

It is a two way street, the recruit has to want to come here. We don't know who Grant has all reached out to, and if they would take his call. Even the best salesman gets doors slammed in their face now and again.

More like playing with fire...
"playing with house money on grad transfers"
say Cunningham gets hurt, how many games do we win...…..5,6???????? we can't afford for anyone to get hurt and we are counting on a recently repaired Mikesell, and a bunch of underclassmen. We are dangerously thin.

That's why I'd take two grad transfers. You still get the scholarships for 2019 and worst case scenario you get practice bodies

Unless a graduate transfer is really good and can help the team, why bring them on? The downside is they will take away minutes from players we want to develop for the future. If the pickings are slim, I would rather we go with what we have, and give the young players playing time early and often so that when the conference season rolls around, we’re ready to compete for a top3 finish in league play. If we do that, chances are good we make the tournament.

They don't take away minutes, they earn minutes. Unless everyone wants Crutcher to play 35 minutes per game for the entire year, we really could have used another PG. Even if Cohill gets some PT there, he's a combo guard, not a true PG. It's a one year deal with a grad transfer, can't believe there wasn't someone out there who could have given us another backup option to spell starters or in case of injury.

What happens if Crutcher, Davis or Landers gets hurt for a couple games? There's one scholarship guard on the bench then. If any starting guard or Cohill gets knocked out for the year then this season is probably a write off.
The young guys will earn their minutes

All scholarships filled is great in theory. An open scholarship does you no good. But you gotta give the scholarships to the right guys. The absolute worst thing is having guys take up scholarships who aren't very good. Quality is more important than quantity but you do have to have some depth. Ideally, you want guys on the bench who buy in, and are waiting in the wings, working hard in practice and developing, readying themselves for their opportunity. I agree that grad transfers are house money but aside from that, you gotta be careful. A "full" team is not the goal.
