Saint Joseph's Game Thread
Time to go back on the road after two solid wins... Off to one of our house of horrors, Hagan Arena, (along with Gola) and exercises some demons. They have lost 2 in a row on the road after winning back to back home games vs. VCU and St. Bonaventure.
Game is at 6:30 on Wednesday Night and will be shown on CBS Sports Network.
Starting Lineup:
G 1 Shavar Newkirk 6’0” 185 SR New York, NY
G 15 Chris Clover 6’3” 210 JR Philadelphia, PA
F 25 James Demery 6’6” 200 SR Williamston, NC
F 24 Pierfrancesco Oliva 6’8” 210 RS SO Taranto, Italy
F 33 Taylor Funk 6’9” 225 FR Lancaster, PA
Gotta contain the Newkirk (17.9 PPG 4 RPG 3.4 APG) and Demery (17.6 PPG 5.5 RPG) Duo... Funk has been a fantastic at 13.1 PPG.
Work hard boys! Get a tough road victory... Go UD!

I haven't followed the hawks at all this year, I know they had a ton of injuries last year, but my impression was that if they came back fully healthy (have they?) that they would be a load this year, push for an NCAA bid and certainly finish in the top 4 of the A10. That hasn't happened, why I'm not sure.
Anyhoo, I view this as a pivotal game for UD's postseason aspirations. Aside from winning out (which ain't going to happen) there is 0% chance of an at large bid to the big dance at this point, so short of running the table in the A10 tournament, the best hope is to "win they games they are suppose to" Win a few that they are not and work their way into the NIT field. At the start of the season, given all the turnover and lack of experience, I would have considered that a success (provided that was coupled with a team that looked to be heading in the right direction/back to the big dance in the near term). If you look at rpi forecast if UD performs as "expected" they'll finish with a 90ish rpi, not good enough for the not invited tournament. If UD can win all the games they are favored in according to rpi forecast/sags and avoid any presumed slip ups mixed into that 90ish finish, they finish the season with an 80is rpi. If they can win all the ones they are suppose to, plus pull off a couple that they are not suppose to, they'll finish the season with a 60ish rpi and probably a solid look at an NIT bid should they not sweep thru the A10 tournament.
This would be one of those games that would give you hope they could pull that off. According to RPI forecast/sags, St Joe's is favored by 0.7 points. The other opportunities to pull of a win despite the currently projected loss is home vs Rhody, @ VCU, @ Rhody, @ LaSalle. Win 2 of those 5, plus everything else (much easier said then done) and I think most would be happy.
All that is putting the cart before the horse however, of immediate interest is seeing how the team responds to everything "going their way" Friday night. They may not shot that well in a layup line as they did Friday night; do they let that cloud their vision of what they are, what they can be? Or perhaps it inspires them to realize as long as they keep moving the ball, sharing the ball as well as they did Friday that there are plenty of open shots to be had. In the win one, lose one landscape that has followed this team all year, is Friday a break thru, or just a mirage with more mediocrity to come?

It will be real interesting to see how the Hawks play us on “D” tonight. Ever since we have been in the A10, the Philadelphia teams have played what I call the “Martelli” defense against the Flyers. That is, all 5 defenders inside the arc and “dare” us to hoist three pointers. They have even been known to drop their hands and not even give the slightest sign of contesting the shot. Over the years we have shown that we cannot make a high enough percentage to make them pay for that strategy. We could hit 4 or 5 in a row and they would stay in that mindset…. and eventually we would miss enough to lose the game.
Is this year’s team capable of making them pay? Will Phil alter his strategy in the Anthony Grant era? We will find out in about 12 hours!
GO FLYERS!

Martelli is a heck of a coach. I suspect he will play a tight man that limits our three shots and dares us to pass inside. I'll bet they don't come out in a full court press.

Martelli is going to come out in tight man to man and put plenty of pressure on our ballhandlers in the half-court. For a team in UD who turns the ball over as much as they do he'd be a fool not to.

If Martelli
emphasizes "D" against UD it will be the first time in his career he has done so. He is definitely an offense first coach whose charges will first try to outscore UD. He plays "D" when his back is to the wall late in the game or in OT. I do understand that he will not apply full court pressure as he watched the VCU tape and he will not choose to speed up the tempo against the Flyers.

They’re gonna play much tighter D now that John Crosby won’t be playing tonight. Out sick. Must have caught something from Kostas. Gonna be a long night for crutch

This will be the first game thread in a while where nobody is going to criticize Crosby's play.
He is sick and didn't make the trip. Kostas is healthy and available though.

Really gonna miss his wild last second passes to anyone he can find, teammate, opponent, guy in the stands, etc.

I have no idea what to expect tonight. I hope we continue to pass the ball to get open shots and we send the ball inside early and often. I hope we are moving past the roller coaster up and down performances. But, who knows with a team as young as ours.

It only took me a couple hours, but I finally figured out how to get a free 1-week trial offer of HULU Live on my ROKU, which has CBS Sports Network, just in time for the game.

Zero helpside D. I thought it was the players. It's obvious they are coached to stand and watch. Worried about the 3 while we offer layup after layup over multiple games.

Crutcher with great shooting, except that last one was too far out. As someone said Joe's play little D.
We have to pick up our help D like we did the last time down.

Correct, terrible call. Both feet were clearly on the ground when he called timeout. I have no idea what the ref was watching.

Matej is a hot mess shooting the ball again. He about shattered the backboard with that putback. Good rebound though, and good pass to Kostas, that he was asleep on.

Our defense is terrible and our half court offense against the zone is well, terrible.

Dayton has taken 27 shots.
18 are 3 pointers.
That's too many. It's almost like Martelli is encouraging UD to shoot 3s on purpose.

We may not shoot a foul shot this game, as we shoot nothing inside.

Why is Matej in instead of Kostas? Gives us zero inside presence. Landers staying way outside.

The sad thing is what works at home doesn't work on the road and UD has no fix.
Fire up three balls on heat in the Arena...then go ice cold on the road with no other alternative.
Man to man defense is horrid.

21 threes and only 10 twos.
And Matej in the lane. What is the deal playing that guy?

Svoboda makes stupid errors that most decent players stop making in 7th grade. A 3-second and a lane violation in one half? C'mon man!
And, are back to playing perimeter pass mixed with chuck-a-three. So many terrible shots.

JC has taken 2 shots. We have to get the ball to JC a heck of a lot more than that to win.

Cunningham with 2 pts and 1 rebound in 12 minutes. DD and Crutcher were the only players out there. Kudos to those two. Williams lost in space again. Landers seems lost running on the outside. Jordan not shooting well.
We have 7 assists and 6 turnovers. We have taken a mind boggling 22 threes. Are you joking?
Meanwhile Joe's is hitting 50% on our terrible D.

I'm ****ed. A lane violation during a FT with a guy who's hit 30 in a row. I mean, why even anticipate having to rebound in that situation. SMH

This is not working. I say start Kostas, Cunninham, DD, Crutcher and Landers. Go big, pound it inside, and play zone on defense.

Missed the first 8+ minutes which seem to have been our best stretch. Figures.
Didn’t have high hopes for a win but there’s no way we should be getting blown out by a mediocre St Joes team. Settling for 3’s and not rebounding. Drive to contact! Why did Crutcher hVe to put up that circus shot? Because he didn’t drive to contact?
Play some D and hustle! And let Svoboda watch.

I am noticing that other than DD and Crosby, no one on our team has the guts and/or ability to dribble drive to the basket. It becomes easy to play defense against us if we are missing our threes.

Dayton
is playing the same quality of defense that VCU showed UD at the arena. For as much as AG emphasizes "D" the team sure does not listen to him. Can he speak louder?

Good things happening when UD has the ball in their hands less than 6 feet from the bucket...weird.

And don't forget it's not like UD actually stopped VCU. Giving up 79 points isn't exactly great defense.
