Early in the season I reffed a Meadowdale game and this kid is quick. How he fits onto the team as a walk-on will be determined later but I assume he'll be an intense and motivated practice player...and behind-the-scenes leader.

What is the weakness of this kid that he got no D1 offers? Looks to be a below average jumper, but he can flat out shoot and score.

Being the best player on a bad team can sometimes work against you. I don't know if that's the case or not and I've never seen him on an AAU team - which is where the real recruiting occurs for players on teams like his - so I'm just guessing that exposure to playing against top talent is probably lacking and affected his options.

He clearly does not shoot much from outside (he can it seems) and has more of a push shot. Very nice body and strength. I'd imagine he's no more than 6'1" and with his lack of exposure (no AAU ball? ) and not tremendously quick that's the reason no D1 offers..Still, you'd think there might be a few small D1 offers..

60% on what kind of volume? I would think that 60% would get you a look from a low-tier D1 school.

88 shots. That's enough to get attention. Twice as many as the nearest teammate. I think we know who was taking the money shots.

I think you have to take his and every other high school kid's shooting percentage with a grain of salt. I have a feeling that the official score keeper might miss a miss or two. Overall that team could really shoot the three according to the stats (48.2% and almost 60% overall) Heck, if he actually made 2/3s of those I would not be disappointed.

I thought that your not allowed to have a walk-on on a academic scholarship to avoid having a coach have more than 13 scholarship. Maybe this does not apply because we will have at least one scholarship available?

the stats tell me he can shoot from outside... some of his better games, at home against Dunbar, his team lost by 14, but Jabali had 30 points and 11 rebounds... 6 for 8 from 3 pt range....at Alter, they lost by 23 points, but Jabali had 31 pts. 8 rebounds and was 8 for 9 from 3 pt range...at home to Stivers, lost by 14... Jabali had 20 points, 11 rebounds, and was 2 for 4 from 3 pt range.... I like the rebounds, that tells me he plays with intensity, and will bring that to practice, and what Rollo said - behind the scenes leader... I like it, welcome to our family Jabali!

Those are numbers you see in the afternoon at the YMCA. It appears that he pretty much scored at will.

and rebounded at will also...) Dunbar was what, 18 - 4 or something last year and he puts 30 on them.... he will give our guards plenty of work in practice, I'm sure.... this is good for our team

The stats aren't perfect. On January 8th he missed 3 three-point shots, but only missed 2 shots overall. Not possible.
If he really can shoot anywhere close to those numbers, he could be on the court for end-of-half or end-of-game plays to help space the floor. If height, defense, and athleticism are the reasons he wasn't recruited... well none of those are terribly relevant when all you need is one three pointer.

Am I the only one that doesn't think he is going to see meaningful minutes in a game? He is a walk on and given our proliferation of scholarship guards, I think he will pretty much be a practice player.

You're not the only one. I'm glad we have a walk-on that apparently can shoot and score, but if he's on the court as a Freshman there is a larger problem.
We all hope he can find a way to contribute, but to expect anything other than typical walk-on minutes isn't fair to Jabali.

I think he'll be an emergency backup. Some people wanted a grad transfer guard for a 10-15 min role to backup Crutcher (who knows, maybe that still happens). I think Jabali is an alternative way of approaching that issue. Crutcher/Cohill can cover the point and Davis/Matos can cover the other guard spot, unless we get in serious foul trouble or suffer an injury. Might see Jabali in those scenarios.

Only if they were recruited or recruited previously. The language the NCAA bylaws quote refers to "recruitable" I believe. We got deep into this when the Kavanaugh saga was playing out and whether or not he could or would return under scholly or walk-on.
This kid here is probably a high character kid if was was being recruited by Bluffton and Wabash. Both schools have really good reputations at the DIII level and I know personally one coach that doesn't mess around with problem kids.
Much of the recruiting world doesn't look at kids that don't play on solid AAU teams that get exposure. If you stay in your league, and it is't a high profile conference, you will be hard pressed to get looks unless scouts are there to watch someone else. Coaches go places they can see many kids on a Saturday...not individual games during conference play. Those guys getting the visits in conference play are already targeted and the coaches are simply getting a personal visit to court that player.

Fox 45 link dead. I wonder if it isn't his place to state he is a walkon and has to wait until open tryouts and the link was pulled?

If he's a walk-on who wasn't being recruited by any D-1 school, I'd be absolutely shocked if he plays meaningful minutes.
On the other hand, if he really does shoot 63% on threes in game situations... those kind of numbers, even on a bad high school team, should translate to at least 40% on open threes in a college game. Maybe he couldn't get his own shot or play defense at a D-1 level (I'm assuming, based on lack of recruitment), but if it turns out that he's far and away our best three-point shooter in practice (like 50%+), I wouldn't be surprised to see him on the court for end-of-half plays where you just need a 3.
But I also wouldn't be surprised to learn that the 63% is a juiced number. Should be a good practice player regardless.

The instagram post by the reporter is also down. Jabali probably told him he was going to walk on which I think is what you would say. I believe what he said was reported incorrectly.
In the past they have tried out in the Fall. I do hope he makes the team

When louisville won the national championship they had 2 ship players go to walk on status so they could offer two players ships. Seems they had several injuries to players out for the year. Questioned it at the time and still do.

Anyone can be a walk-on. The number 1 recruit in the country can be a walk-on at any school as long as they are paying their own way. Players who are recruitable cannot be on academic scholarship at a school while being a walk-on.

Two open questions, then. Does he count as "recruitable" if he doesn't get any D-1 offers anywhere else? Are his scholarships from UD or from outside sources? If they're outside sources, I'd think that would count as paying his own way.

Don't know about UD since my youngest didn't apply there but she's valedictorian of her class of 640, 5.0 GPA, 32 ACT, volunteers, leadership position in volunteer org, and has also held several jobs. Was good enough to get into the Honors college at UT Austin (no money), wait-listed at BU, and not accepted at Rice or NYU.
Don't know what it takes to earn any kind of merit scholarship these days.

That would not seem to pass the sniff test. So a distant wealthy relative or friend of family could tote-the-note for a recruit to be a walkon? Yipe.

That seems to be UD's strategy: offer enuf money to equal the state schools. The Elder Swampette got a scholarship that made Dayton equal to Michigan in cost. She chose UD.

Yes but what happens when you have two players already on scholarships that go to walk on status so they can bring in two more players on scholarships. Don't sound right once your on ship to then go walkon sounds like they had way more than 13 players.

It's still the same as long as they are paying their own way. It doesn't happen more often is because there are not players willing to pay their own way.

Is this kid considered a minority admission? Different set of rules.

Don't know what it takes to earn any kind of merit scholarship these days.

Think she made a fine choice with UT...although I'd have chosen A&M if staying instate.

Bobby Wehrli was discovered during a pick-up game at the Rec Plex by assistant Bill Comar. His role as a walk on his sophomore year during the 2013-2014 elite eight run was minor but his junior year 2014-2015 when we were down to seven scholarship players he blossomed and averaged 14 minutes per game and earned a scholarship his senior year.
You can't measure a players heart. Wehrli's diving on the floor for loose balls and the enthusiasm he played with made him a fan favorite!
I wish Jabali Leonard the same kind of success both in the classroom and on the basketball floor in his next four years!

On the Rodney Chatman thread we have people that are worried we have too many guards to keep everyone happy with playing time...and we only have 11 players (and 2 of the 11 have to sit out). How would these people feel about having more than 13 players?
I think it is an over-reaction on the Chatman thread and you should fill your scholarships and the playing time will work itself out. Don't pass on a recruit because you are worried someone else might not like their playing time. However...because only 5 players can play at a time, having "way more" than 13 players is not much of an advantage IMO. So not really a big deal if a team has a "recruitable" player that pays his own way and doesn't count against the scholarship limit.

It's been said before that the player's minutes get sorted out in preseason and practices. 90% of the players will understand the Coach's final determination on playing time. Doesn't mean they will be thrilled by it, but the good ones compete harder and don't leave the program.

Tuition Equalization Programs have been around for a while. This is precisely how DIII schools get money to athletes as well. Take T.E.P. money, plus misc schollys, and some academic money...you can get nearly a full ship.
