Early Commits

I was looking at Muncinia's top 18 club. They are one of the top prep clubs. They have a 6'4" setter that's committed to Minnesota. She is a 2020 HS grad. I have never seen a player "play-up" THREE years in club. Good player usually play-up one year.

Their other setter is 6'1" Jonni Parker. She was committed to OSU, but must have de-committed. We don't need another setter, but she is a good player back on the market.

This is what I have. The 3 verbals for 2018 are what Rich Kern is reporting. The 2019 verbal Livie Sandt is not listed on Rich Kern. Sometimes the recruit and/or parents don't know about the site or they don't know they have to post it. UD can not post the info. Her twitter page and club website has her committed to UD. So don't read too much into her name not on Rich Kern.

When I spoke to Livie Sandt and her mother I didn't know who she was an just assumed she had a relative playing on Dayton teams. She was quiet and unassuming pretty much just watching the game and not a big rooter.

It was talking with them and Jordan Albarran's father where he told how his daughter chose Dayton did Livie chime in and said she chose Dayton for the same reasons. Really nice people. Her mom said she hopes I'll continue to root for the flyers and her daughter in a couple years.

Livie kinda reminded me of Aliana Turner, whom she said she admired and hoped to be able to play like her even though they play different positions.

Future looks good for Tim and the Ladies.

Dayton adds two 5'10" setters to incoming class

Two more setters, guess we'll have a team of just setters

Brooke can easily hit from anywhere in the front row, maybe Tim rather have her hitting than setting.
A tall setter is quite a luxury, though.

This is one of the big questions this off-season. A year ago I was convinced Brooke was our future setter. Then she took a redshirt year. As a fan you never know 100% because you don't see practices, but it appeared she needed more time. Very understandable for a freshman at the setter position. The only hitter she had ever played with was fellow freshman Jamie in club. And a lot of that decision was probably based on we had the returning A10 SOY. In other words, we had the luxury of giving her a year and that was a smart decision, because she is very talented. She is the highest ranked recruit at UD ever. (#23) she will be in the system 5 years and that is so exciting.

This spring I was leaning towards Brooke playing a hitters role. First we have Jane for another year. Second, we have two talented setters coming in this fall. Usually you recruit setters 2-3 years apart and carry 2 on your roster with possibly a shorter setter that converts to a defensive Specialist in college as a third emergency option. We will have 4 setters on the roster next year, all 5'10" or taller. Highly unusual. So I was leaning towards Brooke hitting at least this coming year. I was a little surprised she set in the Butler spring match. So who knows?? The trend is to move to taller setters. Minn has a 6'4" setter recruit. And I know of 3-4 teams that will have 6'8" hitters this year. Remember when we had 6'6" Fletmeier? She could just flatout hit over players trying to stop her. If you're a 5'10" setter, you will have to have unreal jumping ability or really long arms to stop these taller hitters. Blocking isn't all about height, but at under 6' these hitters coming up have 6+ inches on you. You're not going to be able to block that.

What the heck is a "year in residence"? Transfers in VB don't have to sit a year.

I have no idea what a year in residence is. But she will be a sophomore. And if you think of a medical residence, it might be some type of degree-based year of study at another college. Total guess. I do know the staff was looking to add a transfer OH or MB. This will be the deepest UD squad I have ever seen. It's got to improve blocking and serving more consistantly aggressive. And we need another OH that can step up and play 6 rotations. But if these ladies get after it, they can be the best UD team ever. They are still a step or two behind the 2010 team at the end of last year.

I did find where "year in residence" is the NCAA term for sitting out a year. However, volleyball players are eligible for a one-time exception to sitting out a year. Unless this is Weaver's second transfer (don't think so), I can't see why she would not be eligible to play in the fall.

That's very interesting. With this information, plus over on volleytalk she was on the list of players looking to transfer, I would guess she will not play this year with this designation, but will practice with the team. Maybe Syracuse would not give her a release to transfer to UD???? And so this is how it get termed. It also might mean she still has a redshirt option if she gets hurt down the road???? It's odd the announcement wouldn't explain it. It would have helped us fans since no one seems to know what it means because no one has ever run up against it before. A comment like, "Weaver will spend a year in residence followed by three years of eligibility" would have cleared some of this up. My GUESS with this new NCAA info is that's the plan for Weaver, but again it's a guess?

If she can't play this year, she would drop down one class on the list above. That is actually a good thing in balancing the classes out some.

I looked up a couple things on Weaver. As a freshman, she led Syracuse in points per set at just over 3. That might factor into the theory she left without a release??? And is required to sit out a year at UD????

She played OH and my assumption that was left side. She played 6 rotations. Her hitting was inconsistent, but that is common for a freshman. Some good matches and some struggles. She blocked well for a left OH. 0.62/set at that position is solid and she was only a freshman. I think she was 3rd on the team in digs - again very solid for a freshman.

Based on all this, it would not surprise me if she wasn't given a release, or it was restricted and she has to sit a year.

I reached out to a couple club coaches on the year in residence designation. None were familiar with it to be honest, but most thought Syracuse probably didn't give her a release, so she has to sit a year.

new names - both same high school inWI

Hope they are good. Beyer verbally committed to William Woods University in Mo. 6-14-2016 but appears to have changed her mind. Van Lanen is listed at 5'10" at one source and 6'0" at another.

Looks like TH is going for skill over height (and probably players our former coach does not want at U of WI.)
