Butler (Battle 4 Atlantis) Game Thread

Solid Start to the year but now we head to the Bahamas for one heck of a tournament. First up is LaVall Jordan's solid Butler Bulldogs, who are 3-0 as well and just beat Ole Miss at Hinkle 83-76 last night.

Game is on Wednesday at 7 PM and will be shown on ESPN News.

G 5 Paul Jorgensen 6’2” 185 RS SR New City, NY
G 2 Aaron Thompson 6’2” 185 SO Glenn Dale, MD

C 51 Nate Fowler 6’10” 240 SR Cincinnati, OH

Baldwin is a beast, easily their best player (23.3 PPG 6.7 RPG 5.7 APG)... GW Transfer Paul Jorgensen is very good as well averaging just under 19 a game. Big Joey Brunk (6'11") is really good off the bench, averages 15 PPG (14-15 FG).

Going to be a heck of test, with a win leading to a likely date with Top 5 UVA.

Any idea if it will be on ESPN+? Dayton's website says it will, but the battle 4 Atlantis website says ESPN3. I don't have ESPN news or ESPN3 with my cable package.

ESPN3 is a free online feed... Just like ESPN+ (just you don't have to pay for it)

ESPN3 is free if your cable provider has that package with ESPN. I thought my ESPN+ subscription would allow me to watch all games on ESPN3 but that's not case. I tried.

Will be interesting to see if our defense will be able to stop a strong opponent. If not it will be a less than successful week. with us and MTSU in the bracket, the bracket probably isn't as strong as the other bracket. On paper the Cavaliers have the easist path to the championship game. but the games aren't played on paper.

I think their string of successful coaches is better than you know who ...

I would like to think we can approach that somehow.

The fate of the outcome for UD is dependent upon how tuff the guys can be against this up-tick in player skills that Butler brings.

In the not so distant past we haven't had the ability to match up with their 1) talent and 2) their athleticism. I saw that last game in UD Arena in 2013 when Butler was in A10. We had Dyshawn, Sanford, Oliver to name a few noteworthy players but just couldn't get over the hump. The team with these 3 guys were a year away from their E8 run.

If we are fortunate we keep it close as we did in 2013 and find a way!

The game is on ESPNnews. Should be a part of your cable package. Unfortunately, ESPNnews is considered a national broadcast channel. This is why the game won't be viewable on ESPN+.

Oh well. I have cable but definitely don't mind paying the extra money for all the content ESPN+ includes.

IIRC, Nate Fowler was the guy Archie offered when he was a Freshman at CincyMo 7 years ago. Would be nice to give a guy who spurned us a little going-away present.

Also, their overall size isn’t that intimidating, once you get past Fowler and Brunk. Assuming they won’t play a lot of double-post (and so far this year, they haven’t), our 3/4 guys (Landers, Mikesell, Matos) should match theirs well. It’s the 3-ball and penetration (and our inability so far to defend either) that has me concerned. Jorgensen and McDermott seem to be their top deep threats. Need to faceguard them and dare them to drive. But it looks like getting to the rack is what Baldwin and Brunk do, so JC and Obi may need some help dropping in from the wing. Pick your poison, I guess. Still, I picked us to win, and I stand by that pick. Go Flyers!

On a side note, in some respects, I miss not having Butler as a regular opponent more than I miss not having Norwood Community College as a regular opponent (even though we have a much longer history with Gangsta Prep). That’s because TTDS took the Louisville route years ago, going after guys with questionable character in the interest of on-court success. Butler, on the other hand, has seemingly continued to do it “the right way”, with guys who seem to be class acts as well as good players. That’s a credit to Barry Collier and the program he’s established over the years. Good people. Good program.

I give us about 10% chance in this one. Butler is too disciplined on both sides of the ball to make the number of mistakes we would need them to make to give ourselves an honest chance. In two years I think we will be in a much better position.

Defensively we don't have the goods right now.

That's about the same odds NumberFire analytics gives us. They have us at 15%.

Interestingly the line over the last 24 hours moved from +7.5, up to +8.5, and has now dropped to +7. Meaning the recent money is coming in heavy on UD. I find that surprising. I think this is a double digit game. If I was in Vegas I would be grabbing Butler -7 all day long and hope I'm wrong.

Too many people are writing this game off as a loss. I think it’s a very winnable game and an opportunity to avenge our losses from the last year these dogs were in the A10.

TeamRankings.com projects all our games and continues to update after each result. They give us at 27.1% chance v Butler. They currently project us to finish 19-10 (11-7), with a 14% chance to make the ncaa tournament and as a 12 seed if selected, a 16% chance to get the #1 seed in the conference tournament and a 14% chance to win it.

We all know Butler’s gonna get on a run. We need to meet that with great D- looks to me like we have the better athleticism and will need it. But their talented.

Until tonight I thought that Mikesell would help us more than hurt us. But with his solid D and impressive moves around the bucket I’m starting to buy into the story that he’s a different player after the surgeries. He can actually be a key cog on many a night.

Defense is taking away Butler’s game and not giving up any backdoor cuts. This will help in conference play against Davidson and a couple of others.
