Mason thoughts
1. UGLY win defined.
2. 9-18 from the line
3. 3-16 from three
4. I mean, Mason SUCKS and still almost beat us
5. Watson hit some big shots down the stretch
6. I think we got a lot of calls go our way, but it was hard to tell
7. The Stadium network, whatever the hell that is, owns like three cameras total
8. The Mason band director and our band director share the same stylist
9. The Mason mascot is what it would look like if Thomas Jefferson was a Packer fan
10. Several beers tonight. And I needed them all.

8-0 in true road games with 1 left. The hardest one. Only Baylor and SDSU are also undefeated on the road.

So we're the only undefeated team on both road and home.

And we managed to win. On the road.

As I watched this and suffered through another four stars with oak leaf cluster Spectrum presentation, I kept going to "this is how we get blown out at Rhode Island".
I was the first to blab about the uninspiring effort, lack of focus (free throws), lack of hustle on 50/50 balls, etc. But this is the equivalent to baseball's "dog days of summer"......playing a 6,000 NET, quad 27 team on the road.
Still, great teams find a way to win, and also find a way to recognize the need to improve...even at this stage of the year.
Can tell CAG is still working the pieces.....less Jordy, less Chatman, more Cohill and Ibi now.
Not sure if I should be worried, relieved, or resigned to anxiety.
I am sure I am going to have another beer though.

The positive takeaways from this less-than-stellar effort were the contributions of Ibi and Dwayne.
Ibi finally hit a three and hit a clutch bucket at the end; Dwayne played solid D, didn’t TO the rock and scored when we needed a spark.

Chatman should have played more tonight. He shot the ball well and played his normal defense.
We will find out Friday night against Davidson how Dayton is feeling. If they bounce back with a great effort and handle Davidson well and look sharp. Then I'll feel good about going into R.I. A big time game might wake them up.

Agreed that Ibi and Dwayne saved our bacon tonight.
Agreed that we need to see a hypnotist before missed FTs cause us to lose a game (Trey, what’s this “dribble 3 times while looking at the ground, then chuck it at the hoop” BS?).
Agreed that this win, while fugly, was still a win.
Agreed that a postgame beer (after a pregame beer and 3 in-game beers) was in order.
G’night, Priders.

Frankly, the past 4 or 5 games have shown us to be a top A10 team, but not a top 5 team. The team I have been watching lately can be upset by many teams come tourney time.

I would like to think that Davidson in front of 13,400 at home on Friday night on ESPN2 with Dickie V in the house will be enuf to motivate the guys to play like they did vs. URI and in the 2nd half vs the Dukes

Gm went 22/57 and 3/19. Look, we won, but it was close because we played terribly, not because GM didn't suck. That's a definitely loss against anything more than a mediocre opponent.

Did not see the game, but reading the box score we left 10 points on the floor between poor three shooting and foul shooting. That turned a 17 point win into a 7 point win. Good to see Obi find his FT stroke again, as he went 7-9. Then we had Landers at 0-3, Crutcher at 2-4 and Cohill at 0-2. That is terrible. Those three need to shoot a couple hundred the next two practices, although Crutcher has proven to be money over the course of the season, so maybe he gets a free pass.
We shot 50% and had only 9 assists. Not good, and not our game.

Kenpom had us winning by 12. We missed by 5 points. It was ugly, but nowhere near as ugly as number 7 losing to an 11-15 team.

Was there.
Ibi and Dwayne played very well!
Landers with key steal and plays on offense and D.
Mason pep band was great!
Mason had no active or good big man.
Crutcher broke ft streak!
Crutcher and Obi hit the fts they needed to.
Mikesell with bonehead 24 second clock play.
Obi solid down the stretch!
Good timeours and great plays called by AG.
GOOD Road victory.

The other top 5 teams can be upset by many teams come tourney time too. Just because we are top 5 doesn't mean we are going to dominate everyone we play and cruise into the final four.

If you look at all Champions in all sports they play close games throughout the season.
The key is for the team to win those games.
Dayton is winning those games.
It doesn't have to be pretty to get a W.
But the W is the goal. We have A LOT of W's.
This is the time to enjoy being an alum/fam of UD. Soak it all in

Yep and the teams that seemingly waltz thru their league/season don't fare very well when the amount of egg shells increase under their sneakers...As long as these boys can stay healthy and out of serious foul trouble they can hang, and beat, any team out there especially on a neutral court....

that says it all right here...
this is always my favorite and first
site to go to...
what with me being blind,
I have really had to limit my go to sites,
believe you me...
I went to bed so mad last night,
we are all Flyer fanatics and when
I saw "inane" "less than half a brain"
remarks, I just had to leave and call it
a night... thought it was totally just,
rude, so not right...
we don't, and we won't all think the
same - but we are all Flyer fans...
the one that was the straw was, paraphrasing:
"I wonder what they will post when we
finally do lose??"....
the one who posted that left me SMH..
so, that almost means you are LOOKING FORWARD,
or CAN'T WAIT till our next loss????
is that right?
how about looking forward to how long
this streak can continue, what is wrong with
that? I never, ever thought I would feel
like I had to explain or ever defend my
lifetime fanship of the flyers...
okay, going to get some coffee and
wake up... not mad anymore, just blah..
Go Flyers!

Our next two games will tell a lot. Should have no problems getting up for the next two.
If they look good in those two games, then I'll definitely say we were just coasting.

I thought our defense seemed better. I'm less concerned about our offense long term - shooting slumps can happen. Our defense was starting to become a concern though, so I was happy to see it improve.

And dang the guy can rebound. All want-to.
My list of positives...
Road WIN on an off night shooting.
Cohill and Watson contributed BIG. 1-7 is starting to gel with Jordy and Matos available for back-fill.
Obi, Trey and Jalen made it happen, AGAIN. Hard to contain those 3 guys.
We got some good practice against an athletic player in the post who was having a huge night around the rim. We need all the reps we can find the rest of the way defending a big inside the paint. More work to be done to improve our defense here, but when we brought a double late in the game it helped. And, no one was seriously in foul trouble, which is a balancing act in this case.

Could you not see the floor from your seats? AJ Wilson was by far their best player last night. Scored 18, was altering shots all night, had at least 2 blocks, had probably the dunk of the night on his jam off the missed shot. He played like Obi light.

Teams don't get to 26-2 (15-0) without some bumps in the road. I'm thinking these guys just got done with a stretch of games that included SLU, URI, VCU and Duq. Probably the toughest part of the schedule. Throw in UMass for good measure which was not an easy one in that tiny gym. That's the top of the A10 either at the time or currently. Probably let the foot off the gas looking down the road a bit with Davidson and URI both of whom are quite capable of beating the good guys. Time to refocus and finish up the regular season with the foot on the gas peddle.

Here's a game summary from a friend at the game...
Exactly. Ugly but a win is a win. They looked far from a #1 seed and Obi looked far from a lottery pick. Lots of red in the crowd but the Flyers didn’t give them a lot to cheer about.
Couldn’t hit a three (3-16) and couldn’t hit a free throw (9-18). Hit a few from the line, including the front ends of 1-1s, and the game isn’t close.
They’ll have to play better to beat anybody in the tournament. Have to play better to beat Davidson at home, I’m not too worried, but Rhode Island on the road will test them again.
The guy that I thought gave his all last night was Cohill. That guy surprises me. Doesn’t even look or act like a basketball player. Great defensively and made a few nice drives to the hoop.
Still think Ibi Watson is the best pure shooter and should be getting more playing time when the shots aren’t falling for others.
See you in Cleveland!

I believe out KenPom defensive ranking moved from 57 to 51. Not sure if that was over the last 1 or 2 games. Either way, at this point in the season, that is pretty good. So the offense is slowing down but defense is picking up. If there is/was a concern with this team it is defense. So I'm okay with giving up a little O for better D.

Cohill played well. I feel like teams are daring us to drive for the last 8 games or so. They are overplaying and trying to blanket the 3 point threats. They want to force us into a drive and mid-range shot.
I think Cohill is exploiting that. He drives and shoots floaters quite well. He is also a really good defender.

I'm not sure it was them necessarily letting the foot off the gas...
I think at this time of the year, teams are really just grinding it out - trying to get to the finish line.
And with some short turnarounds, like from a Saturday game to a Tuesday road game, teams are going to struggle (just ask Duke).

Dwayne kicked arse last night. Id guess he was in for about 8 minutes straight too in 2nd half.
(Mikesell was on bench a lot mid second half)

Trey misses the first FT after a TO every time. Every. Single. Time. If he goes straight to the line he usually makes both. The best defense against us is to foul Trey right before a TV timeout. Works every time.

The routine you just described seems to be Jalen Crucher's. Except he usually makes them. I wonder if Trey decided to copy his routine hoping for the same success? I remember as a kid I tried to copyng every member of the Reds starting lineups batting style at one point or another. It worked out about as well as Trey's FT shooting.

Landers has sunk like a rock to 61% from the free throw line. He looks nervous from there lately. Get him a shrink.

Landers will be just fine from the line. And Mikesell will break out of his 3-point funk at the right time.

Seriously? After 28 games, they pretty much are what they are. Mikesell has always been very inconsistent with his 3s and all you have to do is look at his shot to see why. A line drive, no arc. Trey, maybe, but I wouldn't count on it.
Okay, you might think I'm being negative, but I'm not. We're 26-2 with them shooting poorly in those areas, so I really don't expect an improvement nor regression.

I agree that our defense has improved. In particular I see us keeping guys in front of us way more often. Earlier in the year it was only Chatman who was able to do that. But Trey does it on a regular basis as do Mikesell, Cohill, and Watson.
The area on D that concerns me is rebounding. Offensive rebounding is what it is for this team. They won't suddenly become great at it. They can still win a national championship without being Top 50 in that category. But defensive rebounding is the area that I fear will keep this team from achieving everything it has the potential to achieve this season. Fundamentals just aren't there. Trey is doing yeoman's work but even he fails to box out and has to rely on athleticism and timing to get a lot of his boards. I keep hoping I'll see evidence of improvement there but so far I haven't. I just don't feel that Grant can afford to say, "We are what we are with respect to defensive rebounding." (not that he has, mind you)
2nd chance points are the kind of thing that good NCAA tournament teams will take advantage of and will be what ends the dream early if it does end early. Other things like a horrible 3-point night, foul trouble, or poor FT shooting can also end it. But at least with the rebounding issue it can be fixed before the dancing shoes go on in a few weeks.

Yeah, defensive rebounding is certainly our weakness. As I said in my last post, we are what we are after 28 games and I don't see that improving either. We're also very poor(at least my eyetest says so) in getting to 50 50 loose balls. Those things kill you when you're behind and trying to catch up. We haven't found ourselves in that situation too often. But the good thing about that is when we do find ourselves in catch up mode and we don't get a defensive rebound, the other team can only run 20 seconds more instead of 30.

After watching some of the replay of Mason game I noted that both Matos and Sissoko were missing from the bench. I know Sissoko doesn’t make every trip...but no Matos? I listened to the WHIO broadcast during game and no mention of this by Larry. Maybe someone with Jablonski contacts can reach out for info?

He was seated on the bench with his warmup shirt on. Coach Andy Farrell was sitting between him and the other 3 reserves.

I don't know about you, but every time I see Matos check into the game he looks like a player who is ready to play. He moves with confidence, he gets right into the action. . . he's the anti-Frankie Policelli. It may be that there's just not enough minutes and Cohill is playing better. But it's not like Matos is playing poorly in such limited minutes.

You are correct! When he checks into the game he comes in with enthusiasm and confidence and gets right into the action, especially on defense. However, on offense he will telegraph his passes at the most inopportune time and create a turnover by throwing an errant pass! AG knows this can cost us a win in a close game and since minutes are scarce he is going with the hot hand and more dependable Cohill at this time.

Mikesell has been a lifetime 1 for 3 until this season which finds him about 6 made buckets below his norm. But he is due to make a few above the .333 mark. A few too many 0-fers.
We could use those 6 anytime now.
Landers is kind of in the same boat. I wouldn't call it a "breakout", but he is below his norm if he could knock a few down it would be noticed.
Can't let the opponent think you are afraid to take the shot when you are wide open.

It just seems like all of our subs have the same disease. When they check into the game, their unbridled enthusiasm translates into a turnover, missed defensive assignment, foul, or badly missed shot. They just need to let the game come to them. Once they get into the flow their productivity is evident. Of course Chatman is prone to that as well. I have always felt the watching the floor action from the bench for a few minutes was an asset. These guys are too old to be nervous.
