Findlay normally has plenty of beef and size for a division 2 school.

Oilers Have High Expectations This Season

The University of Findlay men’s basketball team has high expectations heading into the 2010-11 campaign. The Oilers have been ranked high in the preseason polls and are coming off of a 24-7 campaign, which saw the team capture their eighth Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division title in the past nine years. The Oilers also won the GLIAC Tournament for the fifth time in the past seven seasons and reached the NCAA Division II Tournament for the ninth consecutive year. As a team, the Oilers are hoping to continue their success during the 2010-11 campaign as they return a plethora of experienced veterans to lead a team with added firepower from a mix of transfers and talented newcomers.
At point guard, the Oilers had to find a replacement for four-year starter Marcus Parker and have appeared to have done so with the signing of Kyle Caiola, who will be a junior heading into in the season after playing his first two years at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.
Caiola was named first team all-East Region last year as a sophomore after averaging 20.2 points per game for the River Hawks. The Normandy High School product from Parma, Ohio was selected as the 2010 Northeast-10 Tournament MVP and guided his squad to a 20-12 record last year en route to a spot in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
In only two seasons of NCAA Division II competition, Caiola racked up 1,043 points and was tabbed a preseason All-American for the 2010-11 campaign by several different publications.
“Kyle is a great scorer and someone who has proven he can compete at a high level,” said head coach Ron Niekamp. “He is going to add some firepower to our backcourt and also give us a veteran presence at the most important position.”
Backing up Caiola will be freshman Sean Samsel, who was named first team all-region and honorable mention all-Kentucky for Dupont Manual High School in Louisville, Kentucky.
At the other guard position, the Oilers have the luxury of welcoming back senior Nathan Hyde, who earned first team all-Midwest Region honors last year as a junior and is currently on several preseason All-American lists.
Hyde, who averaged 18.4 points per game last season, was also named the 2010 GLIAC Tournament MVP and captured first team all-conference honors as well. During the GLIAC Tournament, Hyde set league records for most points in a series (84), most made three pointers in a series (15) and most made free throws without a miss in a series (23). He also broke Findlay’s single season three point record, draining 95 on the year.
The remarkable junior season by Hyde pushed him over the 1,000 point plateau for his career (1,117) and his 570 points scored last year ranks as the ninth best in school history.
“Nate carried us at times last year and we are hoping that he won’t have to do as much this season,” said Niekamp. “He has improved his overall game each and every year and it is great to have his leadership and clutch shot making ability on the floor.”
Sophomore Aaron Robinson will also return to play guard for the Oilers this season and made 26 starts in his inaugural campaign.
Robinson, a tenacious defender, can play several different positions for the Oilers depending on how they set their lineup, will see plenty of action in the winter after averaging 8.6 points in just under 30 minutes per game last year.
“Aaron is a tremendous defender and has showed the ability to be an offensive threat,” said Niekamp. “He made an impact for our team last year as a freshman and we are looking for the same kind of impact this season.”
Junior Justin Schomaeker will return as well after seeing action in 13 games last season.
“Our guards have been a vital part of our program in the past and this year will not be any different,” said Niekamp. “Nate and Kyle have both performed at all-region levels and Aaron is one of the best defenders around. Sean meanwhile can put the ball in the basket and rack up points in a hurry.”
At forward, the Oilers have numerous options to choose from and you can expect the team to rotate a lot of players during the course of the game.
Senior Tyler Sparks will lead the group and returns after averaging 11.1 points and a team-high 6.0 rebounds per game during his junior campaign.
An all-conference tournament selection, Sparks, who injured his knee during the Oilers 2008-09 NCAA Division II National Championship run, appears to be fully healthy this season and will see time at both forward positions due to his athleticism and versatility.
“Tyler is pretty close to where he was before he was injured and will be counted on to be a leader of this team,” said Niekamp. “He can play several different positions for us and will provide our team with toughness and leadership.”
Also returning to a forward position will be sophomore Jack Smith, who appeared in all 31 games last year while making four starts.
Smith, who can play the “3” or the “4” like Sparks, averaged 7.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game as a freshman.
“Jack has an awful lot of potential and really worked on his game in the off-season,” said Niekamp.
Freshman Greg Kahlig, who was selected as the Ohio Division IV Player of the Year for Fort Recovery High School in Fort Recovery, Ohio, will also look for playing time early in his career.
“We like what we see from the forward position,” said Niekamp. “We have a number of guys who can help in a variety of roles, which makes us pretty deep in terms of rotations.”
In the post, the Oilers again have a lot of depth and numerous players who can play several different positions for the team.
Senior Jason Wehri leads the group of returnees after making 21 starts for Findlay last season.
A member of the 2010 GLIAC all-tournament team, Wehri averaged 5.9 points and 3.5 rebounds per game last season for the Oilers.
“Jason has improved every year and played well for us in the post last season,” said Niekamp.
Also returning will be senior Michael Agunga, junior Rob Marsden who have each logged many meaningful minutes in an Oilers uniform.
Agunga has played in 92 career games and provides solid depth off the bench while Marsden, who made ten starts as a sophomore, has great potential to improve on his averages of 3.5 points and 3.6 rebounds per game, which he accumulated last year.
“Michael and Rob have both played meaningful minutes for us in the past and will be counted on to do so again this year,” said Niekamp.
Sophomore Brad Piehl was added to the mix during the spring after he transferred from Robert Morris University, a NCAA Division I Tournament team, and will be looking for immediate playing time during the 2010-11 campaign.
Piehl, who averaged 1.8 points and 1.2 rebounds per game for the Colonials, was named the 2009 Division IV Player of the Year in Ohio for New Knoxville High School in New Knoxville, Ohio during his senior season and led his squad to the 2008 state championship during his junior campaign.
“Brad is a skilled offensive player who can really rebound in the paint,” said Niekamp. Also looking for playing time will be red-shirt freshman Chris Baldwin, a talented athlete, and freshman Mark Frilling, who prepped at Fort Loramie High School in Fort Loramie, Ohio. “Chris is a tremendous athlete who is continuing to work on his overall game while Mark is a tenacious player who can fill multiple roles for us,” said Niekamp. These guys will help provide us with depth in the post, something we have not had in a long time.”

Is that photo doctored? Taken with a fish-eye lens? Man, what are they feeding these kids? Josh Benson should get his hands on some of it!

Good for them, I hope they come in and beat our brains in around the basket so we can get a mid-season attitude when going for rebounds. Let's see what kind of fight we have.

He looks like a young Rick Majerus.
They claim he is 5-11 and 205 pounds on the roster. Not sure how many big macs ago that was?

AdamtheFlyer can only hope to improve
Easy to see why Findlay is successful, they have brought in some of the best HS players in Ohio, with a focus on the MAC conference, the best small school hoops and football league in the country, let alone Ohio. Obviously these guys lacked the DI skillset, but at the DII level they will be top tier players.

Watched Greg Kahlig play against Jefferson in the Regional Finals last year. Kid was a GREAT high school player, nearly beat the eventual state champs by himself. Best passer I've seen in this area the last several years. Down the road he will be a star at the D-II level.

Never saw Mark Frilling, but he was a dominate scorer.

Brad Piehl went to Robert Morris last year. Came from New Knoxville, and was the best small school player in Ohio his last couple of seasons. Not much of an athlete even at the DII level, but he makes everything you let him get up.

Aaron Robinson (#24) is from Trotwood, and is very close with Chris Wright. Has the skill of a D-I player but not the metrics. 6'2" SF types just don't play in D-I.

Based on my research, here is their starting lineup:

G 12 Kyle Caiola 5’11” 175 JR Parma, Ohio
G 24 Aaron Robinson 6’2” 185 SO Trotwood, Ohio
G 10 Nathan Hyde 6’3” 180 SR Findlay, Ohio
F 14 Tyler Sparks 6’4” 205 SR Olmsted Falls, Ohio
C 33 Jason Wehri 6’9” 240 SR Ottoville, Ohio

The only one I can see as "iffy" is Aaron Robinson. It will either be him, 6'5" Jack Smith or 6'7" Rob Marsden.

The trio of Caiola, Hyde & Sparks is very good!

Will be a challenge

Paul Williams

He just looks out of synch. Offensively, we just look ragged. Defensively, we are switching prematurely and leaving the 3-point shooters open.

Offense looking eerily similar tolast year. Already with 5 or 6 tournovers, setlling for too many threes.

This is Gross

Even with the upgrades at point guard this team needs to force the issue on offense. That means push the ball up the court for easy buckets and in the half court sets drive the ball to the basket. Be aggressive already.

BG has a tough lesson program this year with the young players. He wants a frantic defense and patient offense. Right now the defense is frantic good, and the offense is a frantic not-so-good work-in-process. It will take some time to get both right at the same time.

17 of our 27 first half shots were threes according to gametracker. This is not a good trend.

Guard rebounding

Last season London averaged 3.5 rebounds a game, and Rob 2.2. One concern was how our smallish guards this year might rebound.

Josh had 5 rebounds against GVS, and now he has 5 rebounds in the first half against Findlay. He has terrific anticipation to go with quickness and strength.

Not to worry.

Fan next to me, as Staten is shooting free throws with 4 seconds left in the half, comments/complains that last year London would've waited too long to take the last shot of the half and missed a wild shot as time expired.

Could be so, but at least that would've prevented Findlay's lucky 3-point bankshot at the buzzer.

For sure a 5 point turnaround. Juwan misses two and Findlay does a Kwaime Mitchell impersonation.

When Parker is hot, he is a hell of a shooter. Shots that look well-guarded, off-balance, etc. are still dropping.

Its going to be nice to have a player at guard that can hit those kind of shots. How many times have we watched a player like that throw in an off balance no look shot to kill this team.

I feel like our guards have hit more pull up mid range jumpers in this game than we hit all year. Probably even more than we even attempted all of last year.

It's such a nice luxury to know that we have two guards who can create their own shot. Or make something out of a bad possession by finding an open seam and hitting the jumper.

My first time seeing Spearman play, and I agree that he looks like a good offensive player.
Guard play is much better than last year so far. This is very encouraging indeed.

Some of these shots that are falling for Findlay are pretty just prayers answered. I think the defense is playing better than the score indicates. We have work to do on defense for sure, but I am pretty satisfied with the team this early in the season.

Findlay was the perfect preseason opponent. They made us step up---54 point second half.

Game came down to rebounding, defense, turnovers---advantage Dayton. BG ought to be thrilled because what he emphasizes was the difference in the game. Shooting was even between the teams (ok, close enough).

Impressive:

Parker !
Spearman.
Staten.
Fabrizius.
CJ.
CW.

Only 2 turnovers in the second half, didn't take as many threes, equated to a 54 point half. Also, how about 24-32 shooting free throws? very encouraging.

Just got back from the game - I actually thought Paul Williams played pretty well. He didn't force it in the first half, and in the second half, really stepped up the defense, and made more happen on offense. He was the cause of the turnover that lead to Oliver's dipsy-doo lay-in. Fought hard through a screen, and the ballhandler had nowhere to go, and threw a bad weak pass that Oliver scooped up.

Spearman played some good defense as well. I like what he brings.

We do for sure need some more out of the 5 spot. Searcy looked like it was his first preseason game, and just couldn't get it going. But the defense picked up as the game wore on, and we did plenty of good things tonight.

Parker and Staten can create a shot when needed, which is so refreshing to see. They just look smooth. I can't wait to see Staten improve, because he's already good now.

Wright looked somewhat out of sorts, especially early on, but I'm not worried about what he can do. I love love love that play where we set the back screen for Chris on the baseline - it gets a dunk every single time (except against Kansas where the pass was thrown off his shin at the end of the first half).

Findlay looked pretty solid, and I think this was a perfect tuneup for us - got to show some good things, but still enough needs to be worked on. I like 17 first half 3's and 7 second half 3's. I like cutting the turnovers from 10 to 2 as well.

I agree. I thought Paul played pretty well. Hes good for 7-9ppg and 2-3rbs, a steal, a couple deflections, and basic solid hoopies. He carries himself like an old man out there just lurking round gnawing on his mouthguard. Little emotion. But hes engaged. Dont let the posture fool you. BG knows he can count on him.

Grades for the Night

CW- B minus - No points first half. Big bucket dunk on our bread and butter play out of a timeout when we were down 39-37

CJ- B - About average night.

LF - B - Played pretty well - not bad when your center is knocking down 3's.

PW - B - Old reliable

JS - B - Still working on his defense, too many fouls, love that drive to the right and the high kiss off the glass

DS - B Minus - Not much good, Not much bad

JP - B plus - solid night - except for the quick shot from the top of the key that had BG go apoplectic

JB - B minus - nice move across the lane in the second half

RH - Incomplete - Only 2 minutes

MK - C plus - bad pass turnover

BS - B plus - looked pretty good for a frosh

DO - C plus - will slowly improve

Refs - D Plus - Too many ticky tack fouls

Crowd - B plus - 12,300 for an exhibition is not too shabby

X - A plus - always good when the Musties go down to Bellarmine

We must not have been watching the same game. For 28 minutes Paul had 2 turnovers, 3 points, missed a layup, lost his man, had 3 personal fouls, and generally was out of focus.

After Bucky made a similar observation it was like Paul had an epiphany and played good ball the last 12 minutes. Good for him--a late start is better than no start.

I was impressed with Findlay, but I always say that after watching them play. They have a great division 2 program, and I am confident that they are better than some of the teams we will play early in our schedule. They are also always very well coached. I have a lot of respect for their program.

I thought that our defense played a lot better in the 2nd half. All of our offensive weapons began to show in the 2nd half as well. Someone said it well on another thread. It really didn't matter that Chris Wright had a mediocre night offensively. We have a lot more offensive balance this year. We have a lot of guys with the potential to drop 10 pts on any given night.

I still think we have a long, long way to go with rebounding and defense, but this was a good step forward.

Findlay a good test

I also was impressed with Findlay. Can see why they are rated so high in D2.

But, was that a 'normal team' for our upcoming season?
ALOT of perimeter 2 and 3 man action. Inside focus was a non-factor, save some rolls off the screens.
I wonder if the D we saw tonight will be normal or needed very often in our regular season.

Two observations that I left with ....
1) Guard D pressure - just different than with London and Lowery. I did not feel the pressure would generate many turnovers. Slow down the opponent's offense, yes. But not lead to too many TOs.
2) Transition - I was disaapointed in our transition offense. I don't recall any time where JS or JP put the defense in a bad spot by taking the ball to the middle on fast break. They seemed more intent on passing it up to the corner, which usually opened up the trailers.
Not sure if Findlay's good play feed these two observations, probably to some degree.
