Good Morning everyone, I'd thought I'd get the Thread out of the way now... Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas! Our last Non-Con game comes on Saturday. Let's finish it off in style. The Eagles are easily the 2nd best team we play at home in the OOC after Mississippi State... They are 8-4 heading in and are a decent team.

Game is on Saturday at 3:30 PM and will be shown on the NBC Sports Network.

Yes, they start 4 guards.

They can score the ball, they average 87 points a night, with 5 guys averaging in double figures. Brown is easily their best player (16.7 PPG 4.2 RPG 4.9 APG). One thing I noticed in their stats, it looks like they are good at turning people over (they have 100 steals as a team, for example, we have 60 in the same amount of games).

This is going to be a good finish before we start the new year in A-10 Play.

Jalen, Jordan, and Dwayne are going to have their hands full. Especially Crutcher, who likes the ball in his hands a lot. They have long quick guards with 3 of the 4 going 6'4".

Except for playing at Arizona, they have played in front of empty gyms. IMO our crowd could make the difference in the game.

Georgia Southern has good wins against ... nobody. Other than Arizona, who scorched them, they have played mediocre teams. This should be another walk in the park, if all eight of our players show up.

Bradley is 7-5 on a weak schedule. Hopefully we are a lot better than Bradley and win by at least ten. We are favored by 8 or 9.

This zone D by Grant is genius. Just what the doctor ordered to up our intensity. And we have not given up a point in the paint in about 5 minutes, after giving up 14 in the first 11 minutes.

AG not happy at all...and he shouldn’t be. His presser was evident. And he spent a long time before meeting with Larry post game. This entire team was lethargic and did not hustle for half of the game. Ain’t that right Ryan Mikesell?

Really miss the depth and defense of Matos. Trend is clear and AG was angry with the defensive again. So I think Jalen is a very good offensive player. He is a very poor defender. He is ok in first halves but really struggled to stop the ball at game ends. Kid tonite had his way with him and got in lane every time he wanted. There was also no help side D. The press worked tonite and also seemed to wear us out. This week needs to be boot camp and get back to the D we saw in Bahamas. Defense starts with your guards locked in and not letting the opposition freely run there offense. We do it in spurts but are not mentally tough enough as yet to sustain for 40 min. Seem to be regressing and the boys get tired and sloppy on D. The good news is they have not lost a game they shouldn’t . Big week to change there second half approach.

I would rather analyze it with a win than a loss but yeh we spit the bit in the closing minutes.

Whoever said that they can't shoot threes jinxed us. They shot 60% the second half to catch us.

Actually thought they were tougher than Butler.

We had 5 players with 4 assists or more. Shared the ball well.

We survived GaSouthern shooting 80% EFG% in the second half. We got away with it today, but wont again this year. All they did was run to a spot on the offensive side of the floor and get there before we did and take an uncontested shot. Way too much loafing on D today. The Flyers spent too much time admiring their made baskets.

That said, Ga Southern is a quality side.

Much to like and much to worry about -

Worry:
Short bench
Lack of confident 3 point shooting
Foul trouble - every game
Player injury to anybody
Player Fatigue
Defensive lapses

Like:
Josh and Obi show
Effective Use of zone defense - something we would have never seen from Archie or BG
Jalen - most of the time

Credit AG with tonight's win. The match-up half court zone, plus the 1-2-2 three quarter court zone press (new wrinkle) got us that 13 point half time lead. Until we went zone, the Eagles were carving up our man-to-man and we were down 6 (17-23) at 9:31 in the first half.

Eagles started to solve the zone in the second half and got open looks that they knocked down - 9-15 (60%) from trey in the second half. Without that 13 point cushion we probably lose this game.

Our defensive woes really hit us in the second half when we gave up so many open looks. I partly blame fatigue and also lack of court awareness. Eagles we just beating us to their shooting spots on the floor.

Still, a good win. Josh is the quiet assassin and Obi is the human highlight. Obi does things I have never seen a Flyer do. Such a joy to watch. His enthusiasm is infectious.

And the game before us with Radford they shot 39%. They were horrible from 3pt the first few games of the season and have been shooting 3's real good the last few games.
