Kyle Davis extraordinaire
Watching the game over again it's difficult to count the number of ways Kyle Davis helps the team out on the floor. Don't know what he is like in the locker room, but he is as savvy as any player we have had in a long time on the hardwood.
He demonstrated this court awareness with his 9 rebounds and 5 steals. And those numbers don't even begin to count the ball disruptions he causes that do not result in box score numbers.
He is lethal on doubling up the ball handler. He is as quick up in the air as any player on the floor and has extraordinary elevation. He is the best at seeing the whole floor and getting open so a marginal ball handler like Sibert or Werhli does not get trapped with the ball in traffic or the corners. In a scrum for the ball he is the one most likely to come out with it.
Of course we all know he is the closest we have to a lock down defender. That's a given.
He doesn't just guard his man, he terrorizes him with boundless energy. 5 games in 8 days and he was all over Providence to the end last night.
Whatever pace is called for in the game situation, he senses it and speeds up or slows down intuitively.
One heck of a glue player for any team. Glad it's ours.

We have one of the most underrated starting fives in the country as far as I'm concerned. Maybe they are a little short, but they are fast, smart, tenacious, tireless, and know how to play team basketball. We couldn't afford to lose any of them.

If I was rating our starters by any set of conditions it would be #1 Pierre, # 2 KD and the rest are tied. People obviously look at points scored and rate that. But what the heck is the difference in a guy who puts points on the board for your team or takes them away from the other? I'll tell you what it is, the one who takes points away is usually more consistent at what he does best. Kyle Davis has proven how important he is to this team, it goes unnoticed at times, but it's always there.
Also, I saw this coming. Archie let Scooch guard Dunn for most of the first half(when he was in the game) to keep KD from getting into foul trouble. He then unleashed him in the 2nd half. Very smart.

Kyle's got anticipation that seems to always get him there ahead of the ball. I had a feeling he was my type player the first time I saw him get in that defensive stance and flash that look of confidence that he was going nowhere that day. He was going to be on the ball all day long. And like it. Our junkyard dog. And tough? For all the steals and hard-nosed plays you dont see guys talking smack to him or getting in his grill. They have to respect that he brings it every possession. "Oh no, here comes 3 back in the game, gotta turn up my end." I get that impression a lot from noticing opponent's mannerisms and body language. Just give him his lunch pail and let him go to work. We have more complete players but no one with his hand in the game more than Kyle Davis. Proud that he's my favorite current Flyer.

I wanted to hug Kyle when he started passing up those jumpshots late even though the crowd was trying to (senselessly) egg him on. He's struggled mightily w/his jumper the last half of the season and on a team with a couple much better long-range shooting options, those shots are not his shots to take. I would never expect Jordan Sibert to do to Dunn what Davis did to him, but I would also not expect Davis to take and make huge treys (GW notwithstanding) like Sibert.
John Wooden said never let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses and playing to those strengths is a strength by itself. A bad shot is just like a turnover. A good open shot taken by a jumpshooter thats not a jumpshooter is still a bad shot. Not that Kyle cant hit a jumpshot. But a team is at its best when every player just "does their job".
I see a lot of maturation in a kid that sees that open shot, and passes it up because he knows someone else stands a better chance of making it. Its unselfish, its humble, its complete confidence in doing whats best for the team at the expense of personal success.
Just do your job. Kyles job is to take the opposing team's best perimeter player and get rid of him and make it a 4 on 4 basketball game. Siberts job is to make the big shots. Pollards job is to rack up fouls on the opposing team. And so on and so on. When everyone does their job and doesnt attempt to be all things to all people, you put yourself in position to win.
In a 60pt grinder, every single possession is precious. I tweeted last night during the last 10 minutes that we needed to slow down a bit and run our offense and build on the lead every chance we could get because an 8-10pt lead in this game would feel like 14-16pts in any other contest. Be efficient. Dont get greedy and try to win the game in a 30 second flurry.
Just keep turning the screw tighter and tighter. I thought Kyle Davis' performance last night embodied that approach as much as anyone Ive seen all year -- not just in what he did, but what he didnt do. I truly believe those shots he passed up were worth about 1 extra point in UDs favor every time. We kept working the offense, got the ball to other players, and scored elsewhere. It never happens if Kyle just says, "Heck with it, Im gonna shoot until I make one whether its 5 or 25 shots."
There isnt a single player on this team that can do "everything". Certainly nobody can do Kyle's job as good as Kyle. That alone should be enough. The kid doesnt have to apologize to anyone for passing up some shots. This isnt RecPlex ball where your 2-12 effort from the perimeter only costs you a sandwich at Jimmy Johns.

Flyers have never really had a lockdown on the ball defender over the years. Alex Robertson was great at getting steals, London Warren was a decent on ball defender and an excellent help defender but Kyle takes it to a different level with his ability to frustrate very good offensive players.

Opponents know now that Kyle has no confidence in his 3 point shot. There lies a catch 22. They are sagging off Kyle daring him to shoot a 3. You can see in his face that he has no confidence in that shot right.
If he passes up the shot, the other teams defensive strategy to focus on the other 4 works. It places more pressure on the other players. The defense can sag and collapse on Pierre easier. If he clanks a shot, it works also.
That is why the occasional 3 by Bobby Wehrli is a back breaker. Teams don't view him as a threat.
Number 1 goal for Kyle over the summer has to be improvement in the 3 point shot.

Somewhat. But this isn't London Warren we're talking about. KD will take the shot if he's left open enough. LW made it worse on the team because he never took it. KD will also make the shot every now and then.
KD will get better at it. Remember last year how everyone assumed KD couldn't shoot FTs? His stroke is nice at the FT line and I knew he was better than that. He's also a better shooter from 3 point land than he's shown lately. He's going to be a great player, good from one side of the court great from the other.

His confidence rubs off on others. He has swag. During the game occasionally he will smile after a good play. But if the game is close he is all business and his concentration and stroke at the free throw line improves.

Kyle can take contact and finish at the rim far better than most players that are much bigger than he is. When he's on the break, I assume (not hope for) the layup.

They not only forget he is left handed, but also are victim to his left hand on the right side of the rim. Bottom line he finishes backassward to most players on the break when he needs to improvise. And he does it proficiently.

I don't mind that he is passing up shots nearly as much as the way he is passing them up. A half hearted pump fake after staring at the rim for a full second is as embarrassing as the dude who walks right up to the pretty girl and just stands there in front of her sweating, not saying a word. I'd rather he catch the ball and at least try to probe the defense aggressively, even if he is doing nothing more than back dribbling and rotating the ball.

IIRC, Kyle took 3 treys on Friday night and I thought Archie was going to explode..... if looks could kill, KD was a goner. My personal opinion is that he ought to go ahead and shoot them when he is soooo open, but it looks to me that Archie wants him to stop....
My guess is that he will show up next year as a much more accomplished shooter.....

Don't forget how significant defense is. Kyle is a defensive stud who changes our team defense and can frustrate the best scorer on the opposing team. A couple of years ago, we had a terrific offensive team with little defense. That won't get you far.

Somehow I get the feeling that Archie will be on a mission this off-season to help KD with his outside shot.... and that by the time the Red N Blue game rolls around next season, WE WILL see a much improved shooter in KD. Archie loves this kid and he knows how to teach "the shot." He did it with Jordan (albeit a good shooter to begin with)...I gotta believe that working on KD's shot is way high on Archie's "to do" list."
That said, Kyle's role in the success of the Flyers this season cannot be overstated. As SD Flyers rightly notes, the stat sheet is just the tip of the iceberg when you look at Kyle.

This would be a GREAT tv segment with clips of KD glued to everyone of them. If we win today, I might send it to whoever is broadcasting the next game. Its a highlight reel all its own.

He seemed to play off their guard more than he did on Dunn. On Dunn he was anticipating more and in his grill nonstop!
I've seen about 14 games on TV this year. Kyle didn't have great defensive games in 3 or 4 of those. But what I witnessed Friday night was an all time great defensive performance by a guard in college ball. Somebody Shd create a KD defensive highlight montage.
Incredible! !!!

I don't think anyone is advocating he never take another perimeter shot again. He just needs to pick his spots. When the defender sagging off him becomes a big disruption to what we're trying to execute on offense, then we need to adjust - by Kyle taking and making a few of these or by changing our on court personnel.
