OFFICIAL 2017 NCAA tournament thread
It's official... don't trust the imitators!
Princeton - Notre Dame and UNC-Wilmington - Virginia kick it off today. Both 5-12 matchups, I bet we will see at least one upset in these 2 games. I'm guessing it'll be Wilmington, as Virginia seemed like they lost themselves down the stretch.
Something to pass the time until Friday at 7 PM anyway! Go Flyers!
It's the most wonderful time of the year!
Skip to 7:30 for the best part.

I didn't see how UNCW got their lead, but I saw how they lost it, playing hero ball, little ball movement, throwing up prayers falling away from the bucket, complimented by a nice matador defense.

If you've been looking for a replacement for coach/player that looks most like their team mascot since John Chenay left Temple, I think I just found him in Notre Dame's Farrel. Said name sake misses the front end of a 1-1 Princeton comes down and misses a last second 3 pointer to win the game, shot was a shade long and hit the back of the iron.

Hero ball, Jacking up 3's, and pressing to speed up the game is how UNCW plays. Keatts is a former Pitino assistant and uses that system but it leans toward more pressing and 3's than UL currently does. More like Pitino teams at Kentucky.
And UNCW has cut it to 3.

So far, first four games and early games Thursday, I haven't seen any team that I wouldn't expect UD to beat. I love watching Princeton play, but Notre Dame wouldn't have beat MY DAYTON FLYERS today...not a chance.

They had no urgency to get down the court once ND missed the FT. It was like they were shocked ND missed and had to settle for that 3.

Our OOC wins going down in flames. Winthrop lost by double digits, ETSU on their way to a double digit loss, and Vanderbilt about to go in the half down to Northwestern.

Thought Minnesota was going to come back all the way but Middle Tennessee dug deeper. Followed most on my iPhone but got to the hotel bar in time to watch this finish. Love seeing David defeat the Gophers. This is what March Madness is all about.

Shockingly, as so many people are talking about WSU being favored by 6+ against us, I am pretty sure Middle Tennessee State was favored by a point and a half.
Line(s) may have moved in the last 24 hours, but I did see it at that early this morning.

Vandy playing stupid ball. Up by one, fouls (on purpose) NW player with 17 seconds on clock then down by one after being able to drive to hoop, they settle for a long 3. They're about to lose barring miracle.

Well, I guess that's an interesting way to essentially hand the game to your opponent (Vanderbilt v. Northwestern).

You feel for the player who intentionally fouled when they were up by 1. And the guy that took the long 3 with plenty of time for a good shot down 1. Kids. What are you going to do. Nightmare for a coach.

I haven't seen the footage, but from the thread and the play-by-play on the game summary, it sounds like the player just had a total brain fart. And he wasn't an underclassman or a little used sub, but a junior who has scored over 1000 points at Vandy (22 of them today).

They had been without a timeout since about the 6 minute mark. The way I figure it happened is the coach told them that when they foul, foul the 51.2 percent FT shooter. So he saw him with the ball in the backcourt and an easy foul and hacked him intentionally not thinking that the situation changed. Of course the guy was 4-4 at FT line up until then and was 6-6 afterward. Are you listening Kendall?

Yes, and his first trip to the line for the day, surprisingly for a guy who shoots 3 or 4 per game on average.

Of course he wasn't coached to foul. They probably were a little earlier when they were down in the final minute. He didn't realize the situation had changed because it was intentional in the backcourt and you don't do that unless you believe your coach wants it. He scrambled the situation.

One of Butler's runs to the Final Four was aided by a similar play. Their opponent fouled them with just a few seconds left thinking they were down one when the score was actually tied.

One of the best things about the NCAA tournament is when you get match-ups full of tradition, like traditional Big East member Xavier versus traditional Big Ten power Maryland.

VCU is not getting away with their foul every possession and dare the refs to call it strategy tonight. Every time the whistle blows they look at the ref like their crazy.

You are right C-time, and VCU in serious trouble down 9 with 2:18 remaining.
Normally I would want the A10 to win; but not really too kean on VCU Personalities.

Didn't see any of that game, but VCU typically employs the "They can't call a foul every time we hack somebody, can they?" strategy that was made popular by Georgetown back in the Hoya Paranoia days. In the A-10, they can get by with it. In a national tournament like this, uh...no.

I picked the first eleven games in a row (11-0). Now I am 11-1 because I picked VCU out of the A-10! Go figure! I should have known that good referees wouldn't let them get away with the rough play!

VCU had trouble generating offense, and came roaring back with defense and hustle. While Vandy Northwestern was amazing, and I'm ecstatic for NW....
ST MARY'S - VCU was to me the best game pre 1030pm eastern time.
ST MARY'S was patient, broke the press. Passed, hit FT.S, and did so many things RIGHT while VCU fought back. Kudos to Bennett and Company. They can win
2 more games. Have size and smarts galore!

2 points:
1. I see consistent, pro-p5 bias in the officiating of these NCAAT games. The non-p5 teams get murdered, and there is often no foul called.
It is a very rough game out there. If you are a non-p5 team, you have to be very tough and overcome the junky officiating.
The rough/unfair play in the low post is often especially evident.
2. All of these close games remind me that the p5 maintain their at-large bid dominance through the use of garbage scheduling. The p5 refuse to play more than a couple/few tough, non-p5, OOC opponents, and those games are often home games for the p5.

I think Lewis decided before the game he was going to be "the man" for VCU. 28 shot attempts? That'll screw up most team's chemistry...unless you're James Harden.

All of the non-football school teams went toe to toe with the football schools. As UD2 pointed out, the games were close and competitive. Of course, what's new? This happens almost every year, but it only makes the football schools more scared of playing non-football schools.

If you are playing the ESPN Tournament Challenge, check out challenger #ESPN*****800 who has a perfect card so far...yeah it's me!!!
You need to pick a couple dogs to have a shot. So far I got X and Middle Tenn. Today's dogs are URI and Marquette. But you can have a perfect bracket up to the last game and get nada unless you pick the winner.

King Rollo and his boys are parked firmly at Champps in Inday and out of sheer luck got seated next to the Oklahoma State cheerleaders! They can't take their eyes off me. Must not be used to Royalty.

Not many things in this world would keep the king from watching his Flyers beat down the Shockers tonight. OK State cheerleaders might be one of them????

It's looking like its good to be an 11 seed this year. 2 already thru to 2nd round. RI could be 3rd. Go Rams!

Who are these announcers on TNT doing the RI game? I have heard more excitement from golf or bowling announcers. They all talk in a low voice like someone is putting. Glad they will not have our game.

Our game notwithstanding, the first round hasn't had many good games this year.
Combine that with our loss, and it outright blows.

Is it okay to cheer for Florida St and Middle Tennessee tonight or will the message board monitors from the Big East be mad at us and not allow us in their conference?

If Northwestern loses by 3 it can be directly attributed to the zebras. Gonzaga blocked a shot through the bottom of the basket. Collins pleaded his case and got T'd. 4 point swing. Terrible.

It appears that Florida St is still a football school and my Blue Raiders are struggling too.
I should also point out that Christi Hester's husband is absolutely taking Leonard Hamilton to school. Hamilton can put together an NBA team in the airport but sure can't coach an actual game.

Collins didn't get T'd up pleading his case...he got T'd up because he was 4-5 steps onto the court when he tried to plead his case.
If he wanted to legally plead his case, he could have called a timeout and asked the refs to discuss the possible goaltending. That's what a calm and collected coach should have done.
Did the refs miss the call? Yes. Does that give Collins permission to confront the refs on the court? No. Nothing does.

I remember just a week ago some on this board was sure X wouldn't even make the tournament. Here they go again, right back to the Sweet 16. Success begets success. Keep hoping our Flyers reach that level.

Wow, X is tough. That frosh point guard is probably the best they have had in a while (the kid they lost to injury was really a 2 guard). Their zone absolutely destroys teams, as they see very little zone. X is on a run like we had a few years ago. Two of their kids we almost got, but the rest never considered UD. I hate their friggin guts, but they are way ahead of us in recruiting.

Honestly, I love UD more than anything but let's be real. We had one great run. _avier recruits at a different level and their success has been at a different level. It kills me when people say we are fine in the A-10... Lol _avier has a top ten recruiting class coming in and will be a preseason favorite to win it all.

My point was that comparing the two programs the past four years based on what they did in the post season, there is not as lot of difference. Based on x losing their next game, if you list in decending order what the teams have done - I don't see one program being light years ahead of the other.
UD (5-4) - X (5-3)
elite 8 - sweet 16
3rd round - sweet 16
2nd round - 3rd round
2nd round - 1st round
x did finish 9-9 in the big east (7th out of 10) so I don't think I would say "let's be real" and then declare them favorites to be 2018 national champs

Remember when we played X recently? It was a physical butt whoopin. To just look at NCAA results for the last three years does not tell the whole story. Wait till we have to compare next year. This is not a comment about NCAA, it is about the talent they get. How many Sumner's have we got in the last several years? Have you seen their frosh PG play? I did three times. He plays like a junior. Our frosh plays right before the walk-ons.
If Archie had their talent, depth and size, we would be in the final four often. We lost Steve and could not replace him. X lost Sumner and their PG, and a big who left early, and it was next man up, and playing next weekend.
I am very optimistic about next year's frosh, but we will see. Taking off the Red colored glasses, last year we got almost nothing, the year before very little, not counting Steve, and the year before very little. It is not only obvious when we try to compete at a higher level, but it will cause Archie to seek greener pastures.

Since it's Sunday morning . . . amen!
I just posted a similar thought on another thread and sure I will get slammed.
p.s. Can we find a Bronson Koening? Stone cold killer. Kid wanted the ball in crunch time and delivered. When's the last time we had a guy that could create space or rise up and hit a three when he is defended? BRob?

Yes Collins was out on the floor. I have seen coaches out on the floor many times over the years and not get T'd up, especially in the final moments of an NCAA Tournament game. The refs blew it big time, and may have cost Northwestern the game. I don't know how you can have three refs on the floor, with at least one of them looking directly at the play, and not see the goaltending. I would think at least one ref would be looking directly at the defender to see if he committed a foul. How he could not see his hand come up through the rim I will never know. Terrible, incompetent, ridiculous.

Amusing to see Kentucky try to copy our defense of double teaming Shaq Morris twice now, both resulting in open threes... two minutes in.
I think you could count the number of open threes we gave up on one hand. Frankamp already got a wide open look that he missed, Shamet has taken two.

I always think it's funny watching John Calipari get exasperated when you know he's thinking, "Man, my freshmen are ridiculously talented but that play makes me question whether they've ever played basketball before today."

If Kyle Davis was named Malik Monk that would've been a great 3 pt block instead of a foul. Same play.

WSU's last possession looked like any number of our end-of-half possessions this season: lack of movement, waiting too late to look for the shot, etc.

Great decision by Cats to pressure hard on the last play. Helluva effort by Shockers. 10th seed was criminal.

Dayton and Shockers should have been a second round game. WS ridiculously underseeded. The UK game was a sweet 16 game.
The MVC is never bad enough for a team to gom 20-1, 30-4 overall, and get a 10 seed.

This game is getting wild. Bodies flying all over the court and players talking a lot of trash. Rhody is absolutely owning the Ducks on the glass.
64-60 Rhody still holding on. 7:54 left

Just read a news report about Gregg Marshalls wife having the police visit her 3 times during the UK match because of her behavior. I was shocked. Apparently after the game was over they did escort her out. Yikes. It also made me realize we didn't hear or see anything of Morgan this NCAA tourney.
