If he's smart, he'll keep SJU near the top. They play in the Big East Shadow of its Former Self Conference. He's a local kid. He should be concerned that they could move forward with someone else if he indicates that other schools are in the lead. Personally, I like the kid that keeps the local school high on their list. It shows a bit of community loyalty.

I believe SJU has 5 open scholarships and of the guys they do have, most are guards. Just got a center commitment. But the point is he probably doesn't have to take their offer now or risk losing it later. They're pretty desperate.
As far as local guys, showing community loyalty, that's one way to look at it. Conversely, you could say that guys who don't have local schools on their list are ready to break away, find their own way, be their own man and not be weighed down by hangers on. As fans, we can overanalyze these types of things and rationalize just about anything!

I'm not over analyzing or rationalizing anything. I said that it was my preference. It's not critical to show the community loyalty when its a school like OSU, Florida, Kentucky, etc. However, SJU is struggling. Payne did it for us. I thought it was a great gesture. As far as getting out goes, that's certainly relevant where someone has been running with the wrong group that has led to school/legal problems. Coaches may very well want to see that the kid is willing to make a break. Still, I would have no problem with a recruit keeping the home town team high on his list. Note, I've suggested high on the list, not the number one team on his list.

You can kind of tell he just started playing. He likes hanging on the rim too much. Everything was a dunk - no telling if he'll be able to do anything once he has opponents big enough to keep him 3 steps away from the rim. But with that height he's worth taking.

He eats entire pizzas covered in chicken and hamburger. I feel like Archie should have enough pull in this town now to get that added to the menu at Marion's or Kramer's.

Cressler is visiting Vandy this weekend. I think he would be a great addition to UD, but I can see him committing to Vanderbilt on this trip. Ivy League guy so academics are important. Good school. Good league. Stallings seems like a good coach. Spring football game is Saturday. Weather should be nice.

Update on Marial. Someone tell Archie to call Makor please. It sounds like he wants to talk to someone. And I am pretty sure it was Makor (not Makur) during his playing days. Heck, even if Archie dosn't want him, he should still call.

My guess is no one has contacted them as Marquette has made no announcement regarding the release. Until they do most will assume the release has not occurred and steer clear of a violation.

As per the article from Swampy's Post "...a coaching change at a high major school like Marquette..."; someone should inform the writer that Marquette is no longer in a "high major" Conference. The Big East (the one with all the history) ceased to exist about a year ago.

Look at Marquette's resume over the past 10 years and honestly say they are not "high major". Sometimes the sour grapes on this board borders on childish.

During 9 of those 10 years they were in a "high major" (BCS) conference. They are in such a conference no more.

Interesting since not even the major networks give the NBE the respect the old BE had; and for good reason. Three teams in field of 64 plus one in the field of 68 while the A-10 got 6 in the field of 64. Not one NBE team advance farther than 32 and they had great seeds.
Reality is they are no more high mid major in the NBE than the A-10.

They have to prove it as a league. The catholic 7 rode the coattails of top programs for years and years. The 3 additions collected the mojo of the conference teammates in smaller leagues by finishing high in them. The dynamics have changed drastically for both groups. Nova and Creighton were the only teams to impress me last year during their seasons. Then they melted down in the Big Dance. They may have bought a name, but they have to earn their own respect as a league now. Last year, they failed to prove it on the court. If they want to set themselves apart from the A10, they need to set themselves apart from the A10 with performance, not talk.
In the case of the NBE, I think that the whole is less than the sum of its parts. They have made the path to the NCAA harder for themselves by limiting the size of their league. They look at the strength of the bottom of their league as a positive and a bragging point. I think they are condemning decent teams at the bottom of their league to irrelevance by staying with a 10 team league. I don't say this because I want UD in the NBE. They would probably be wise to look for lesser teams than UD for their own good.

My point was that Marquette has been high major...just as Memphis has been high major even though they were in CUSA. The original post said nothing about the conference Marquette was in.
As for the NBE (and the A10 for that matter), if not high major, what would you classify them? Certainly not mid major.

If that is the way you look at it then how do you feel about a mid-major in UConn winning the NCAA tourney? Is UConn a mid-major?

A team that spends over 1.5 million on its basketball program and in a conference that is consistently a Top 10 conference in RPI.

Yes, but you said BCS conference. Many do not consider the AAC as a BCS conference anymore and it is no longer tied to a BCS bowl.

So do we, that proves nothing. Nova is FCS as are we. Hard to say they are not major. I don't believe the labels for football apply totally for basketball. there are "power" conferences football schools that can't hold a candle to our program. Media drives a lot of this. Top schools in the CUSA, AAC, A-10, MVC and others, yes even the NBE, are major in every sense of the word. Overcoming the perception that these schools are not, remains a problem. Although not as big a problem as in the past.

A couple of questions / thoughts back on the subject of recruiting.
1) Dead period for the next few days so NLI can be signed. When should we expect to see a news release on McElvane and Darrell Davis?
2) This coaching staff seems to keep things pretty quiet. But still I am very surprised to have not heard about any scheduled visits or coaches flying out for in-home visits. Would have though Dawkins especially would have scheduled a visit by now. Any news?
3) Of the known targets -- Cornell transfer Nolan Cressler, JUCO Keith Thomas, JUCO Chris Bryant, and unsigned seniors Aubrey Dawkins and Jay Henderson, the only one who seems to be publicly offering updates to media (social or traditional) is Cressler. What gives?

You might have hit the nail on the head. The high- major and mid- major labels are a joke. Duke probably thinks Mercer is a major basketball team after they cleaned Duke's clock. Let's just say D1 program or non D1 program.

If this was the plan, it's probably not still the plan. Because Wright State just got a commitment from a juco power forward originally from New Zealand. I'm pretty sure Wright State doesn't have any more scholarships available.

I think Khari Price and some of the other players that signed in the spring had less information/kinda came out of no where.
I get the impression with transfers/coaching changes/lots of movement & change in a short amount of time things in the spring are more fluid

Nevada is trying to restrict Cole Huff from 45 schools - making it extremely difficult for a California kid to transfer anywhere in the same time zone of home. Crazy.
http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcspor...st-45-schools/
I mention it because someone tweeted the following schools in connection with him:
Nebraska, Rhode Island, Dayton, Vandy, Ohio State, UC-Riverside, and Denver.
Don't know if there is any truth to it, and he is appealing the insane restrictions. But he is a very good player: http://espn.go.com/mens-college-bask...1492/cole-huff

In other news, it appears Michigan is now getting involved with Aubrey Dawkins. Beilein is a heck of a talent evaluator so I think that puts to rest any doubt regarding Dawkins talent.

Nice stats, nice height and weight too.
I wonder why he is transferring?
And I see that he played at UD last year in a First Four win, his familiarity with the arena is a plus.

And also, the folks on Rhody's board, www.keaneyblue.com, keep pretty close tabs on the recruits that they are involved with. I bet they might be monitoring Huff and Cooke, so they might have additional info.
And they've got a thread on Dawkins in the recruiting section of the board.

From the Dawkins thread on the Rhody board, somebody posted that Dayton is in the lead, I have no idea what caused that person to say that.
Also, there is a tweet from Adam Finkelstein from today that Dawkins is expected to visit UD and Michigan in the coming weeks.

Per the Wright State verbalcommits page, I am counting 13 players either on scholarship right now or with a signed LOI(incoming freshmen)or verbally committed(incoming transfers), so I guess that Thomas will not be visiting WSU. Is he still going to visit UD?
And I see that JUCO guard Joe Thomasson, from Thurgood Marshall, decommitted from Oklahoma State and chose WSU instead, he was talked about on here in the past.

There is a 14 page thread about Cooke's transfer on the JMU board. On page 6, it is speculated that he may not have cared much for an assistant coach. http://csnbbs.com/thread-684927-page-6.html But JMU has had quite a few players transferring out of the program so it may not be a very good situation over there.
The concensus seems to be that he is a very good kid with no history of trouble. He's very likeable and has a good personality. Just check out this video interview in which he does an impression of his coach and performs the "Carlton" dance from The Fresh Prince of Bellaire:
http://caamenshoops.wordpress.com/20...charles-cooke/
Regarding playing at UD arena, not only did Cooke play at UD Arena his freshman year, but he had one of his best game as a freshman (consistent with his sophomore year numbers) in that the biggest game of the year for them. He tallied 18 points and 4 boards against Indiana.
What I really like about the kid is he seems to get better every year. Normally you see guys with crazy high school stats that they would never duplicate in college. Cooke's numbers in high school weren't all that impressive. As a junior in high school, he was averaging 7 points a game. As a sophomore in the colonial, he's averaging 14.3 and grabbing 5 boards playing as a 2 guard. He's Devin Oliver-like in his ability to get better every year it seems. Based off that, I assume he's coachable and really puts in the time to work on his game.

Anyone heard anything about Dayton recruiting a PF/C from Spain by way of Sunrise Christian in Wichita, Kansas for the 2014 class? Listed as anywhere from 6'9 to 610."
According to Scout, Ruben Guererro has offers from Dayton, George Mason and Marquette. In late January, it was reported by a couple of the recruiting gurus Indiana offered as well. And supposedly Gonzaga is very interested.
Looks like he followed Dayton's run to the Elite 8 and retweeted a few things including the celebration scene. https://twitter.com/RubenGP_15

Sunrise Christian is a big program. Michigan State has a point guard from there Lourawls Nairns coming in this year. Seems like they play a national schedule and have put multiple guys in DI the past couple years.
Looked at the Gonzaga board and didn't see anything about him. Seems like they've got arvydas sabonis's son coming in

It really sounds like it's Dayton or Michigan for Aubrey Dawkins. I haven't seen it suggested that he's visiting any other schools in the coming weeks. His coach tweeted a picture of him making a smoothie (not sure why) that said Flyers and Wolverines in pursuit. So all indications are he's focused on just these two schools. Dayton has been on him a little while now and Michigan just started recruiting him.

The timing of this visit is crucial. Michigan is bringing in a player - same class, same position - for an official visit this weekend. Muhammad Ali Abdur-Rahkman doesn't hold an offer yet from Michigan, but he has all but said that if he gets the offer this weekend, he's taking it.
http://www.umhoops.com/2014/04/14/mi...abdur-rahkman/
The bottom line is this I think: If Beilein offers Abdur-Rahkman this weekend, Dawkins is a Flyer. Of course, Archie may seal the deal without any "help" from Michigan. But if Abdur-Rahkman and Dawkins are both uncommitted next week and Dawkins is scheduling that visit to Ann Arbor, that would definitely make me a wee bit nervous. Here's hoping we have very good news to start next week to.

Dang. Are we sure he's visiting Dayton this weekend? He didn't alter his plans to go to Michigan this weekend ahead of a Dayton visit? Beilein seems to be setting this up to put pressure on one of his wing targets to commit this weekend.

Unfortunately, that's my guess now too. Last night I was thinking he was visiting Dayton this weekend and Michigan probably next weekend. Under that scenario, I liked our chances a lot. With the visits scheduled in the reverse order, I'm not optimistic at all. The only advantage I can see for Dayton is if Beilein offers both their targets one scholarship (don't think they want both) and says first to claim it, gets it. The advantage would be that Dawkins might have to think about it since he likes Dayton, but it sounds like the other kid has made up his mind that he wants to go to Michigan so he could claim it first, removing that option for Dawkins.
Here's hoping our guesses are wrong though. I think he's going to be a very good player.

Sea, I think you are probably right. The only other scenario I can come up with is that UM told Dawkins that he "must" show up this weekend or don't come at all. As I understand it, UM has another wing visiting this weekend and they will likely play the "who is the first to commit game" On a positive side, if he doesn't commit, we will likely get him next week and we will feel much better about how other programs rated him.

Obviously if he makes it to UD next weekend it would seem to tilt in UDs favor.

I know from my time in Michigan that it is John Beilein's policy not to offer a player until they have been on campus. So if he is going to be visiting I would guess he gets the offer while on campus.

Michigan is trying to fill a hole. They are also having another wing on campus this weekend. They have a hole they need to fill with Stauskus and Robinson leaving. At this point they need a body.

You would think Dawkin's dad is still stinging from the hurt we put on Stanford. I hope he hasn't told his son he can't go to UD.
I was actually surprised that Dayton was going to have him in on Easter weekend. Just doesn't seem like the right timing for a Catholic University. So it makes sense it is next weekend. We'll just have to see how it plays out.

Maybe AM cancelled the Dawkins visit for this weekend because he is headed to Knoxville for some "vacation time" this weekend. And that, is how an Internet rumor gets started! :-)

I definitely think Dawkins fills a significant need. I think he would be #2 on the depth chart at the small forward position behind Pierre and gives Dayton a bigger guard option to backup Sibert at shooting guard. I'm not as worried about rotating guards to spell Sibert (Davises or 2 pgs), but we really need someone else who can fill in for Pierre other than Sibert. Preferably, we don't have to rely on Pollard there because I think he will be needed primarily in more of a power forward role.

It is frustrating. With Ohio State, you always know when they're coming. We may be in on an Ohio kid early and then he blows up. Starts getting 4 stars. It's just a given at that point that Thad and his gigantic nose are sniffing around there. But with Michigan, you just never know because Beilein doesn't care about hype or stars. He'll jump in on a 2 star kid late, like him better than a 4 star kid, secure him and wind up with Caris Levert. And it's like what just happened? Where'd they come from?

The kid from Nevada who is being restricted from 40+ schools likes Dayton evidently. He's a stud.

He sounds like an outstanding potential pick up
Cole Huff, a 6-foot-8, 205 pound forward from Nevada just finished his sophomore year. He will have two years of eligibility after sitting out next season. Huff averaged 12.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game as a sophomore, while shooting 50% on twos and 40% on threes (with close to a 50-50 distribution).
According to Huff’s AAU coach, Dayton, Iowa, Creighton, Vanderbilt and Michigan are the “schools he’s most interested in”. Huff has releases to Creighton, Dayton, Iowa, Michigan and Nebraska, but no visits have been set at this point. Originally barred from transferring anywhere on the West coast, Huff now also has a release to any West coast schools that aren’t in the Mountain West Conference.
Huff wants to play the three to showcase his skillset, but even the four position at Michigan would provide him plenty of freedom.

Christophe Varidel, guard who went from Florida Gulf Coast after their tourney run to Chaminade (went for 42 against Baylor) is transferring and is immediately eligible. He would look incredible in a Dayton jersey for a year.

DDN posted part of an interview in which Archie says Dayton will not fill all 3 scholarships, and the focus is adding size. It's free. http://m.daytondailynews.com/blogs/c...o_add_si.html/

Muhammad Ali Abdur-Rahkman has committed to UM on his visit... Aubrey is there
I follow UM recruiting, that is great news for UD... I believe there is no chance they take both.
Archie let's lock up Aubrey this week!

Do schools really bring kids in and not offer them? Or was this an unofficial visit?

That is good news!
Lock him up, and focus attention on securing that front court size we covet.

He could have been offered this weekend but the other kid claimed that offer.

Exactly... Neither Abdur-Rahkman or Aubrey had been offered by UM going into the weekend... Looks like MAAR got his and jumped on it

If AM were to be getting advice from Pride, or any other site for that matter, he wouldn't be near the coach he appears to be.
