With the team he has right now, why would Archie even consider Florida. With the four juniors, I can honestly see them making a BIG run in one of the next 2 seasons, then he can write his own check at any school he wants, including Dayton.

What a scary headline!!!
Luckily, I read the rest of the title and saw it was about Sean Miller coaching the USA U19 team.

Off topic, but it would be cool if he asked Archie to be an assistant on that team.

The key to not being off topic is to make your post sound like it is on topic. You should have said, "Rumor has it Sean is going to ask Archie to be an assistant on that team."

The new coach will also be very aware of how badly he is screwing over the school he is leaving. And decomitments will be impossible to replace. But, I don't think Florida is too concerned with what anyone else thinks

OK, a couple of point here IF this is true.
1. Looks like a great fit all the way around. Will probably have success there.
2. In my opinion, everyone who is saying UF is a top 5 job needs to reconsider that assessment. This guy looks like a really good coach--let me repeat REALLY GOOD COACH. LA Tech isn't the easiest place to attract talent, to be sure. But, top 5 programs don't target coaches who have never even coached an NCAA game let alone won one. This is the sort of person UD should be targeting if Miller leaves. Coach K, Calipari, Pitino, Self, Roy Williams, and . . . Michael White? All but Coach K were top coaches before they were hired. But, Duke wasn't a top program when K got there either.
To be fair, many coaches are not available to make a switch at this late stage. But also to be fair it seems Donavan has been projecting this for months so the UF administration could have been working behind the scenes long ago.

White really is a great fit for Florida. Native son, established recruiter, SEC background, big winner in CUSA WAC, polished sports family. In my mind, somewhat similar to Jim Tressel being hired for OSU football...

Don't exhale just yet....
I heard Archie is La Tech's #1 candidate to replace White. #2 is Calipari and #3 is Roy Williams. Shaka and Self may also be in running.
Morgan had an Instagram photo of Duck Dynasty so maybe that means they're leaving.

Cheap
Florida went the cheap route for their basketball coach. Not a surprise. They got the best basketball coach they could find for a bargain.
Thank you Colorado St.
Although, I firmly believe Archie wasn't going anywhere regardless.

But they were contacted through the customary back channels that allow everyone to deny and save face. I'm not critical of that process, but don't patronize us with the double-talk.

Even though they are easily top10 in football they had to go to the football powerhouse at Colorado St to get their coach.

My Florida source says that with regard to Arch, there was no direct contact. There was a "preliminary cursory discussion" between AD's about buyout, salary level and binding contractual speed bumps. We all know approval for formal interviews must go through the AD. Didn't have to happen. Never got past the $$$. No interview requested because the other
factors did not pass Foley's litmus test.
I could imagine the same approach was taken with Mack. I Didn't care to probe that one, but it's no secret the alumni view him as a D-bag.
Florida got the coach who's compensation, availability, coaching background, buyout, and whatever else, best fit their coaching needs and their fiscal model at this time.
That's really it in a nutshell.

This was a very good post as it does lend a creditable tone that I believe almost every decision is based on ... clarify ... smart decision is based on.
Rarely is one factor the best and only reason to make a smart move, a smart choice, a smart decision.
A number of factors are selected, a list of possible choices made and then the evaluation against all those factors with the best course of action predicated upon how the available choices match up to those factors. To what degree that each choice matches the 'package' can sometimes point to a surprise you hadn't considered your number 1 before the process.
Thanks SDF

In some ways, this is a sign that UD basketball has taken positive steps to improve itself. In past seasons with past coaches, the buyouts were probably less because the existing Flyer coach wasn't as "hot" an item. Schools wanted them, but there were some at UD w/indigestion about the future with said coach. It was an odd spot. Fans weren't asking the coach to leave, but weren't begging on their knees for them to stay either.
Today, we have a coach those same or better schools now want, but the buyout is larger and the same fan base is near unanimous in wanting to keep the coach. But here's the most important part: the program has gotten better and leaving UD for those same jobs takes more and more thought and consideration because its not the slam-dunk decision it might once have been.
Part of that is winning, part of that is the coach himself, and part of that is the salary/compensation package/buyout that coach now has in place at UD -- which itself is an indication of program health. UD has gotten enough whales to pony up and ensure UD can pay a program-changing coach and salary competitive with all but the Dukes and UKs of the world.
For Florida to not even really push hard for Mack or Miller (OR, for Mack and Miller to immediately send a smoke signal saying 'not interested') says to the Florida AD that mere cabbage and conference alone are no longer enough to appeal to coaches that want to forge their own path.
This is not 10yrs ago when the have-nots were still the have-nots. George Mason, VCU, Butler, Wichita State, and the Flyers have shown that "cant be done" is in fact being done. And if the big-wigs keep living off one-and-dones, I doubt the trend slows down. Much to be said for programs with 3- and 4-yr players that have spent 100 games together knowing how to play basketball with one another.

Highly doubt Roy Williams would go to the NBA. I can see Calipari being interested in another crack at the NBA though. Seems like the kind of guy who would be attracted to the glitz and glamour of the Lakers.

Good info SDF. This is essentially what many on here speculated, unless the money was astronomical, no reason for AM to leave a very good situation here in Dayton.

I dunno Dallas. Calipari's strength is recruiting. Dealing with those massively overpaid ego maniac pro players would give pause. Being a celebrity in Lexington and having your pick of the litter every season has it's draw.
And LA is a fickle crowd. I lived there for 10 years. Win and you are a tinsel town hero of Marvel magnitude. Lose, and you are chopped liver. The town spits out losers. Ask Al Davis. And dealing with the cap issues means you can't reload every year. For every Kobe Bryant there is a Lamar Odom.
I just don't think dealing with overpaid prima donna's is that appealing to Calipari or Williams.
By this time I also think Archie has left the idea of him moving anywhere in the rear view mirror for a year or two.

I firmly, 100% believe that barring something unforeseen, Archie is here two more years. With the incoming Junior class, we have a legit shot of a 2 year window at making a Final Four. Barring Arizona,Kansas,UK,Duke,UNC,MSU,OSU,N.C State OR possibly, possibly Pitt opening he's not going anywhere. Even if he does, we have an attractive job opening with great facilities, boosters and admin that would make the job appealing to most anyone. Most importantly it gets us a home and home with his new team. Could you imagine a UNC or Kentucky coming to the Arena? Regardless, never want to see it. i hope Archie retires from here. Long live Archie!!!!!

That article is a year old? Roy isn't going to LA if that is what your implying. Archie isn't going anywhere either, at least for the next two years.
It sure does feel good to have a "major name" fans all over the country recognize leading our basketball program. Not sure about everyone else, but I'm sure as hell not taking these days for granted.

I very much doubt Duke or UNC will want an NC State guy.

Maybe coach Cal learned something from watching Pitino fail. In college coach Cal can pick up great new players every season. It doesn't work that way in the nba. With the nba you are controlled by the players available in free agency (and outbidding people), your salary cap situation and the draft picks available

I doubt he learned anything from watching Pitino fail in the NBA if he didn't learn it from his own time with the Nets.

FWIW, Coach Cal has already had a stint in the NBA with the Nets. He doesn't have to learn from anybody...he's got personal experience with the NBA.

Hoopdirt poll on the UF coaching search...AM ended up in second place behind White...I have no idea how many people voted in this.

The timing of this poll makes it so it reflects what people thought was going to happen (White), not what the UF fans wanted (Arch). The important thing is that Arch stayed, and now we get to focus on recruiting and next season.

Thanks to both of you for reminding me that Cal has his own failure to remember, LOL.
I can see why Butler's coach went to the celtics, that is a good situation with all of their draft picks and cap space. That isn't the situation that most coaches inherit

The question was "who will be the next coach", not "who do you want as the next coach". When that poll was posted on the same website shortly after the Donovan move, Archie was the overwhelming frontrunner.

So, you're saying it's just like coaching at UK?

Not at all. UK doesn't have a salary cap.

I find it intetesting that Mike White was just telling his recruits, he would take them with him if he bolted. http://www.thenewsstar.com/story/on-...ting/70978438/

Nothing more to say. He has Pollard, Scooch, Pierre right now. a more mature DD, and incoming studs.

Don't see Archie going to Iowa State, but the rumors will come up if and when it opens up.
