Looks like Providence and Seton Hall are sort of falling out of contention, the BE might only get 2 bids. Rpiforecast has Providence finishing at around #45, #45 might not be good enough. Seton Hall is projected to finish at about #46, they are also on the bubble.

As a snapshot today I would agree with you. But 2 things are lurking out there. First, we have a heck of lot of basketball to be played. Second, the BE gets preferential treatment.

SDF,
http://realtimerpi.com/2013-2014/rpi_bige_Men.html
1st year of NBE, 4 bids.
Xavier, at rpi 57 with a sos of 42, getting in was evidence of preferential treatment IMO, the other 3 bids were legit IMO.
http://realtimerpi.com/2014-2015/rpi_bige_Men.html
2nd year.
All 6 bids were legit IMO.

Ok, first that's a cool site.
Two years ago I would argue with Xavier (easily out) AND Providence at #41 and an sos of 52---both out.
Last year St John's with a 10-9 record in conf and a rpi of 44 is out.
This just supports my thoughts. If you play in the NBE and have ANY winning league record and an RPI under 60, you are in. That sucks.

kid i coached in hs is a frosh at joes now...I'll be at Hagan behind the joes bench. I will still be rooting (subtly) for Dayton but man, that's a scary game. I think we need (need should be taken relatively) one of the 2 road games between them and URI. URI looks like a much easier task right now.

Forgive me, but this kind of talk is ridiculous, specifically related to Providence. They are 18-7 with an overall SOS at 57. They own wins over Nova and Arizona (neither at home), as well 7 wins over the Top 100, just one less than Dayton.
Preferential treatment aside, this league (BE) will get more than 2 bids.

That part about 7 wins over Top 100 is pretty random. They have six losses to the Top 100 too. That's four more than Dayton. (8-2 for Dayton vs. 7-6 for Providence.)
I'm not arguing that Providence isn't in the tournament now, I'm just taking exception to your choice of framing that particular statistic to support your point.

Thursday 2/10:
VCU @ Umass
Florida St @ Syracuse (Bubbly, for both)
UConn @ Temple (bubbly for both, mostly Uconn as well as the AAC hope of getting 2 teams into the dance)
Hofstra @ Will & Mary (Colonial is tightly clustered at the top, W&M need a win to remain hopefully of their top seed)
Citadel @ Furman (Citadel gives up 85+ on a regular basis, can furman match the run & gun? They lost at citadel the first go around)
N Florida @ Kennesaw St (1 seed likely coming down to N Florida @ Jacksonville at the end of the season, both tied atop of their league with good spacing above everyone else)
SE Miss St @ UT Martin
Chattanooga @ W. Carolina
Little Rock @ La-Monroe (road upset for a team getting votes?)
#4 Iowa @ Indiana
#11 Oregon @ Cal (what the heck, everyone else ranked w/ 10 & 16 lost this week, why not create some more room for UD)

I agree the they will get upward of 4 bids, but after losing 4 out of 5, Providence is on suicide watch.

That was just a quick glance at some compelling statistics before running out to a meeting. Providence also doesn't have a loss to an RPI 240 team. You could try to equate their DePaul loss to our LaSalle loss, but DePaul also owns another win over a potential tournament team in GW. LaSalle's other 4 wins are against on non-D1 team, and RPI 166, 251 and 325.

I get the sense of panic, particularly for a team that was rated as high as #7 in the last 3 weeks. But to suggest that Providence is "falling out of contention" is such a ridiculous statement, made in an effort to support a scenario where the BE only gets 2 teams in the dance (equally ridiculous), that I had to make an effort to help educate and inform in regards to their situation.
Lunardi, who whether you love him or hate him, is certainly considered a respectable source on bracket predictions, still has Providence as a #6 seed, as does Jerry Palm. Providence could finish .500 the rest of the way and still be pretty safe.

If the rpiforecast forecast holds up, IMO, neither PC nor SH is getting in, unless p5 bias kicks in.
PC 50 rpi 59 sos
SH 55 rpi 70 sos.
UD would not get in with either one of those resumes.
Both these clubs will be near the Dance Card cutline when the next Dance Card update comes out. Both clubs might in fact not make the cut when the newest update of the DC is released.

If RPI forecast holds serve, that would put PC with a 3-3 finish and be 4-5 vs the Top 50 and 10-7 vs the Top 100. Those are numbers that are typically good enough to get in.
Leave SH out of the discussion. I never thought that was a ridiculous comment and have not examined their credentials.

I don't know what the magic last games number is this season, but previously the Selection Committee looked at last 8/10/12 games for W/L. Like I said PC is 1-4 in their last 5 games.
Lots of b-ball to be played and we are still in a fluid state with the bids. Anything could happen. But PC's arrow is down right now.

We will see what happens.
IMO, this all boils down to whether the committee gives the BE the "p5-type preferential treatment".
PC may get in with being 50 in the rpi and 59 in the sos.
Various p5 teams through the years have gotten in with that type of a resume.
And the committee also looks at top 25/50/100 record, the eye test is used, whether a team "is gaining steam" is a factor, BPI rating, Massey rating, other computer ratings posted by ruechalgrin earlier are used, etc. There is no clear cut definition of the criteria needed to obtain an at large bid.
All I know is that the rules for non-p5 teams are a lot tougher than the rules for p5 teams.
I think the committee just uses various reasons to justify snubbing various non-p5 teams. Whatever reason is convenient for each particular snub is the reason that is used. If your top 50 record is not good, they use that against you, if your bpi rating is not good, they use that against you, if your sos is not good, they use that against you, etc.
UD would not EVER get an at large bid with a rpi of 50 and a sos of 59. That is an absolute, undeniable fact.
Here is last year's list of teams that got in:
http://realtimerpi.com/2014-2015/rpi_Men.html
Mississippi, Purdue, and LSU had a rpi and sos similar to PC and got in. There were several non-p5 teams with a better rpi but weaker sos that did not get in. Temple was a big snub, rpi 34 sos 62, but their top 50? record I think was not good.
Last year:
Mississippi rpi 60 sos 53
LSU rpi 58 sos 86
Purdue rpi 55 sos 59
LSU getting a bid with a sos of 86 and a rpi of 58 seems particularly unfair and unjustified.

The committee puts in who they want and then manipulates the numbers to fit. If they deem PC as tourney worthy they will put them in and say "they beat RPI #3 Nova at Nova" while completely ignoring PC's own RPI. I honestly believe they use the numbers after the fact to form their narrative rather than using the numbers to put the bracket together. Don't kid yourselves, UD is 2 losses from the 8/9 line.

Iowa is going to lose to Indiana on the Hoosiers' home court. Frankly, the Hawkeyes have not looked like a fourth-place team. They have had a lot of turnovers; taken a lot of forced shots; and their free-throw shooting has been horiffic. In general, I would say the Flyers could beat the entire Big-10.

UALR gets their third loss tonight. There are 3 teams at 21-3 and 4 teams (including Dayton ) at 20-3. No team in the country has fewer losses than our Flyers! A win over URI Friday night will tie us for the best record in the country.

Agreed, the whole selection process is rigged in favor of the p5 schools, all you can do is to try to put together the best resume you can in an effort to minimize the number of metrics weaknesses that you have. The fewer weaknesses you have, the fewer opportunities the committee has to pick you apart and come up with a reason to exclude you.
Having a good sos with a decent number of top 50/100 wins seems particularly important. OOC road game wins are also important apparently. The teams with weaker sos's or fewer top 50/100 wins seem to get jobbed the most often.
Last year, ud was the last team in despite having a rpi of 33, 28 spots better than #61 Indiana, who was the worst rpi at large team in the field.

Friday 2/12:
#23 USC @ Arizona St
UCLA @ #17 Arizona (again I'll ask, which Miller brother will be ranked higher monday morning?)
Monmouth @ Rider
Saturday 2/13:
#22 Kentucky @ South Carolina (battle for 1st place in the SEC)
G'Town @ Providence (G'town off the bubble, but close, Providence sliding)
TCU @ #10 WVU (I fully expect Huggy to win, but seems like everyone else in front of the flyers have dropped a game this week)
N Iowa @ #25 Wichita St
#15 aTm @ LSU (aTm sliding, LSU looking to get on the bubble)
#18 Purdue @ Michigan (see the note on WVU, except Purdue is the one team that has picked up a big win so far (hopefully by this point, UD will be the 2nd so far this week)
Washington @ Colorado (both bubbly)
Arkansas @ Ole Miss
#6 Kansas @ #3 Oklahoma
#5 X @ Butler
#13 Louisville @ ND
Davidson @ Mason
#11 Oregon @ Stanford (probably the only way UD jumps Oregon w/ a win friday is if they drop a 2nd this week at Stanford)
GW @ Bona (winner will be listed amongst the 1st four on Monday I predict, loser won't get mentioned amongst the first four out, or next 4 out)
Mercer @ Furman
Chattanooga @ E Tenn St
William & Mary @ Townson
#7 Virginia @ Duke
N Florida @ Lipscomb
Little Rock @ Lafayette (Little Rock's hopes for an at large took a huge hit the other night)
Bama @ Florida
SLU @ VCU
Vandy @ Auburn
Fordham @ Richmond
Wisky @ #2 Maryland (A Wisky win probably gets them off the bubble...for now)
Miami @ Toledo (Tic-Tac-Toe, 3 in a row???)
Texas Tech @ #21 Baylor
SE Miss St @ Murray St
LaSalle @ St Joe
Tulsa @ UConn (Tulsa's win at SMU puts them near the buble, UConn's loss to Temple puts them back on it)
#24 Texas @ #14 Iowa St
Gonzaga @ #16 SMU (WCC really needs a Gonzaga victory)
Sunday Feb/14 (pick up some flowers if you haven't done so by now):
IU @ #8 Michigan St
Pitt @ #9 N Carolina
UMass @ Duquesne
#12 Miami @ Florida St
Minny @ #4 Iowa
#23 USC @ #17 Arizona (see my friday Miller brother question)

How hard is it to win on the road? Ask VCU, Iowa or Oregon.
Next two games are huge challenges.

In terms of rankings, there will be a lot of movement this week in the 10-20 range as many teams have fallen not once but twice!
11. Oregon lost at Cal and Stanford
12. Miami has a tough matchup at FSU tomorrow.
13. Louisville lost at Duke and to Notre Dame
14. Iowa state Lost at Texas Tech earlier this week and has another tough match with Texas
15. Texas A&M is trending down fast with yet another loss against LSU today
16. SMU lost to Tulsa and is taking on Gonzaga today
17. Arizona eeked by UCLA last night and hosts USC tomorrow
18. Purdue won against MSU earlier in the week but dropped a tough one to Michigan today
I think we'll be moving up this week at the very least 3 spots in the polls (even if the beloved Kentucky wildcats do jump us for some reason) for those who care. Just keep winning! (the other ranked teams aren't)

Wow we could be approaching 3 seed at this rate. We might lose at St Joes but not as big a deal since we won at URI.

The good news is we should move up enough this week, that even if we do lose at St. Joes, we should remain top 20. Assuming of course that those who vote do not show their typical BCS (yea I know, old term) bias.

Grayson Allen takes 3 steps before hitting an off-balance shot at the buzzer. Not that I really care, but it's more fun when Duke loses.

We could be fighting with Duke for a seed so rooting for UVA.
Not only took 3 steps, but jumped when shooting and appears to have barely landed with one foot before shooting so 4 steps!?!?!?!

just saw something in Tulsa UConn game that I've never seen before and loved it. Tulsa player airballs a 3, another Tulsa player catches it under the basket. As the crowd was into their 2nd round of "AIRBALL" player whips it right back out to same shooter who nails the 3 on the 2nd try. So basically the chant was "AIRBALL...AIR."

GT falls to Clemson, 66-52, at this point it is going to take a miraculous finish to the regular season or an ACC tournament championship run for BG to get into the NCAAT this year.

Per the latest Dance Card, you are right.
I quickly reviewed the resumes of PC and SH, and I don't get why they are so highly regarded...OOC schedule and results are nothing special...BE schedule and results are nothing special...rpi and sos are nothing special.
I do not know how to explain this other than p5-type bias. They are in the BE, so everybody thinks they surely must be great I guess.
Both have at least 2 top 50 wins I think, that must be the reason.
A lot of teams have some top 100 wins, that does not seem special.
I am not all that impressed with the resume of either one, if they were in the a10, then I think they might be on the outside looking in.

Providence has a win against Nova. Like our win against Iowa, I keeps giving. What would both of our resumes look like without those wins.
Providence does have 3 >100 losses too.
Seton Hall's best win - Providence. No >100 losses but 4, 50-100 losses.

Monday 2/15:
Oakland @ Wright St (just b/c Oakland scores a bunch, WSU has been playing well lately, including a sweep over Valpo, a fight for the 2 seed in the Horizon), good chance these 2 meet up in the semi-finals of the Horizon tournament in Detroit, winner of that game likely gets Valpo for a shot at the dance, probably a 1 bid league at that point, would be tough for Valpo to make the field as an at large w/ another loss)
NC State @ #7 Virginia (we'll see where they fall to when the rankings come out, but figure UVA is closer to UD's ranking this week, than they were last week)
Manhattan @ Monmouth (A sweep this week, including Iona at home friday evening, and Monmouth locks up the 1 seed in their conference tournament)
New Mexico St @ #25 (for now) Wichita St (2 WSU's play today and neither will be ranked at the time of their game today, then again, neither will the Cougars or the Weber St wildcats)
Okie St @ #6 Kansas (I assume they'll jump into the top 4, UD isn't going to catch them in the rankings, at least not w/o a Kansas collapse and a super strong UD finish)

Big week of hoops really gets kicked into gear today:
Michigan @ Ohio St (Michigan Bubble, OSU would love to dash their rival's dream)
Northwestern @ #17 Purdue
Creighton @ Butler (Bubbly for both)
Richmond @ Davidson
South Carolina @ Missouri (the good will USC earned the last 2 weeks could be dashed w/ a road loss tonight)
#10 WVU @ #24 Texas
Ball St @ Miami
Rhody @ VCU
#13 Iowa St @ #25 Baylor
Florida @ Georgia (Bubbly for both, more so Florida, but they're on the road)
Vandy @ Miss St (Can't afford a road loss there)
Ole Miss @ aTm (can they stop the slide at home?)

What is going on down at NCSU, why are they struggling this year? This is the first year that Gottfried has missed the NCAAT since he has been at NCSU.

Are you sure about that? GT owes BG about $1.35 million if he is let go after this season, about $500k after next season, per what I have read. And they still owe Hewitt about $2.7 to $3.6 million per what I have read.
Hewitt will be getting paid through 2019 at $900k per year.

I didn't know where to put this, but if you scroll all the way down on this, our loss to LaSalle was the 7th biggest upset in college basketball this year AT ANY LEVEL.
I don't know how to feel about it.

Gottfried is just not a very good coach. I have watched several games and it is mostly their stud point guard, Barber, going one on one. They are the antithesis of Archie's True Team.

I think the LaSalle loss was a blessing in disguise. It showed the Flyers what happens when they lose focus. Since then they haven't lost a game, even though they've been behind late. They are able to kick in the focus again and win. Odds are, they probably won't win out in the last games of the season, but they will give it their all and keep fighting. I have become very spoiled with the winning streak and hate the thought of any more losses, but am forcing myself to be realistic. Who knows? Maybe they'll find it in themselves to win from now on. I'm already nervous about tonight, but at least SJU is one of the better teams and it's an away game. SJU is perfect on the road, but at home, not so much. Always a toss-up.
In any case--GO FLYERS!

Wednesday 2/17:
#4 Iowa @ PedSt
SLU @ G Mason
Bonnies @ Sallies
Auburn @ Arkansas
GW @ Duquesne
UMass @ Fordham
Syracuse @ #18 Louisville (Have the cards thrown in the towel?)
#23 Providence @ #8 X (Providence in a bit of a slid despite having an ungaurdable player)
#1 Nova @ Temple (would be a huge win for Bubbly Temple)
Nebraska @ #22 Indiana
GTech @ Free Shoe U (FSU can't afford to drop a home game vs the likes of GTech)
VTech @ #11 Miami (can't see Miami dropping this game; I've been wrong saying that many times this season)
Seton Hall @ G'Town (Seton Hall very bubbly, G'town... not so much but at home)
Bama @ LSU (very bubbly all around)
#20 Duke @ #5 UNC
#3 Okie @ Texas Tech
Arizona St @ Arizona (which Miller brother will be ranked higher next week? Considering this is Arizona's only game this week, Sean is the safe bet this week)
Colorado @ USC (USC safely in at this point, Buffs are in the 10 seed range)
add in the UD @ St Joe's game, and this is a huge bracket shaping night, in the middle of a huge bracket shaping week. If I count correctly that is 8 games featuring 2 teams either in the dance or around the bubble. Big Night.

Just for sheer morbid curiosity, I checked out the box score of the SLU vs. George Mason contest. Let's just say that I hope we never get that set of refs for a road game. Notable stats include:
Fouls - SLU 25, GM 15
Free Throw Attempts - GM 31, SLU 9
FG % - SLU 49.3, GM 34.8
3-Pt FG % - SLU 45.0%, 23.1%
Largest Lead - SLU 19, GM 1
So, it appears that SLU built a big lead, and then let GM back into the game by fouling them & sending them to the FT line.

Thursday 2/18:
UNC-Wilmington @ William & Mary
NJ Tech @ North florida
VMI @ Chattanooga
#21 SMU @ UConn (big one for the AAC)
Wisky @ #8 Mich St
Cincy @ Tulsa (another big one for the AAC)
Utah @ UCLA (Utah seems to be in the same range as UD at the moment for seeding)
St Mary's at Portland (StMarys can't afford any more losses)
Cal @ Washington (very bubbly for both)
AAC takes center stage tonight, the conference needs a UConn win; not sure whom they'd want to win the UC-Tulsa game, its a big game for both, especially with Temple getting curb stomped last night.

The #6 team in the country Maryland loses on the road at Minnesota who had lost 14 straight games. Guess winning on the road is not easy in February in conference play!

Yeah, I hate to lose, but at least our February loss isn't as bad as THAT February loss!
I guess that just goes to show how tough the B1G is, right?

hey now, they lost by 2 to a team in the dance, they looked wonderful to my eyes with that pretty light blue and yellow trim. Keep losing like that and they'll be a protected seed.

Friday 2/19:
Richmond @ VCU (I guess they get the old rivalry week slot UD v X had on ESPN, makes sense)
Oakland @ Valpo (I think Valpo's shine has worn off a bit thanks a sweep by Wright St, still top 2 teams in the league, could be a good win and preview of the Horizon championship)
Iona @ Monmouth (remember the comments by Iona's coach, or the punches that Iona threw after the game, I doubt Monmouth forgets, perhaps the last hurdle for Monmouth to clear to lock up an NCAA bid, still some minefields left int he regular season, but they're most at home and very bad.)
Saturday 2/20:
#8 X @ G'Town (one last hope for G'town to get back on the bubble)
#20 Duke @ #18 Louisville (just when you think Louisville has thrown in the towel, they play inspired at home vs Syracuse, can they back it up?)
Georgia @ Vandy (both team's bubble chances are mostly shot at this point)
Florida @ South Carolina (USC gave up a lot of goodwill last week, can they handle Florida at home?)
#11 Miami @ #5 UNC (has UNC won any big games this year, why they remain highly ranked is a bit of a mystery)
Drexel @ Will & Mary
St Joes @ Davidson (a SJU win is good for the A10, but hurts UD's shot at the 1 seed)
#25 Baylor @ #24 Texas
Pitt @ Syracuse (Bubbly)
Miami @ Ohio (still a rivalry game?)
Miss St @ Bama (the dream keeps getting stronger)
butler @ #1 Nova
Florida St @ VTech (FSU bubble hopes need this game big time)
Clemson @ NC State (Clemson, see FSU above)
#3 Oklahoma @ #10 WVU
UConn @ Cincy (UConn may be the only sure bet for the dance in the AAC at this point, Cincy needs a win big time)
UNC-Greensboro @ Chattanooga
LSU @ Tennessee (Can't have a tournament w/o Ben Simmons, right?)
#2 Kansas @ Kstate (only b/c so many top 5 teams have lost to unranked foes)
#14 UK @ aTm (Did aTm stop the slide, or just slow it down?)
USC Upstate @ North Florida (a win sets up a showdown for the 1 seed next week against Jacksonville)
Duquesne @ Rhody
Furman @ Wofford
Missouri @ Arkansas
Fordham @ SLU
#19 ND @ GTech (Can BG pull another upset?)
#17 Purdue @ #22 Indiana (do they do the Ole Oak & Bucket for basketball as well?)
Texas Tech @ Oakie St (TTech is rollin')
St Mary's @ Gonzaga (Very Bubbly)
Colorado @ UCLA (my lyin' eyes says this game is a beaut)
Sunday 2/21:
LaSalle @ GW
Seton Hall @ SJU (can SJU win a 2nd game and hurt Hall's bubble bid?)
Michigan @ #6 Maryland (coming off a loss, last night is not what Michigan's bubble hopes needed, I imagine the Terps will be on fire)
Monmouth @ St Peter
Mason @ UMass
Utah @ USC (both teams in the same seed range as UD)
Temple @ Houston (Temple needs a win big time)
A great weekend of games following a great week of games. A handful of teams very much on the bubble or hoping to get on it that are facing mediocre teams on the road, not much chance of improving their standing, but a lot of damage to be done with a loss. Championship week is just around the corner and coming quick.

That's the best reason I've ever seen. I would consider attending a First Four game for them.

Rough schedule for Monmouth. Finish rivalry game against Iona at 11pm and tip 38 hours later for a conference road game. Hope their bench is well-rested for the quick turn.

Watched the last 12 minutes or so of that one from Flanagan's after leaving The Arena following our debacle. Not much defense. And I think a Davidson win was better for us, because it added more life to the possibility of a 3-way tie for 1st in the A10 at the end of the season. We may need that to get the 1 Seed in Brooklyn.
BTW, is anyone else now concerned about Tuesday's game @ SLU. I think they're now on a 2-game winning streak, we're on a 2-game losing streak, our last 2 wins before that weren't exactly impressive, we're playing on their home turf, and they'll be playing with a "nothing to lose" mindset. That all spells "Bear Cave" to me, with the funk our guys are in at the moment.

Yeah, and LaSalle beat us at a time when we were playing fairly well. We're not playing well right now, and St. Louis is a slightly better team than LaSalle. I still say it's a Bear Cave.

No doubt we played two bad games. Let's not get suicidal here. We were in both games right down to the end, against two very good teams. Neither of those compares to the LaSalle loss or tough win against them. Sometimes you have a team that you just cannot psychologically overcome (at Xavier). If we cannot beat the likes of St Louis, Mason and Fordham, then you have a story.
