Heh! Dont knock any free PR. Even after someone spit on Dicky V bare head when Detroit beat UD he has talked how great the fans are here.

That was many years ago but he has to my knowledge never said a bad word about Dayton's program or fans.

Anybody remember when as the coach of Detroit after a last second victory against us, he danced on the"D" at center court?

I'm glad he's FINALLY come around to liking us, he sure hasn't in the past.

In some small way, it’s press. I’m surprised he keeps doing games. Let’s see if he notices the renovations.

maybe he shouldn't of danced on the "D"
at half court with his cheerleader after
a Detroit win, inciting the crowd, you think??!!!

He can just stay away, as far as I'm
concerned...

What I remember best about Dick's tenure at Detroit was the time Motor City native Erv Giddings dunked at the end of a UD victory over the Titans. Dunking was still illegal at the time so Erv got a T and Donoher pulled his a$$, but it was sweet!

Dickie V has raised so much money for cancer and gives of his free time more than most. He's an ambassador of the game as much as anyone.

When I had my Heart Transplant in 2018 he called me 3 times and Sent a wonderful package of goodies! (My cousin told him about my situation)

I told him I would never forgive him for dancing on the court and we had a great laugh.

At times he gets on everyone's nerves but I'm glad I had the chance to see and hear him👌👌👌❤

We have a distant relative with a very similar story about Dickie V. They lived in the same neighborhood and would cross paths most mornings at Another Broken Egg which was Vitales Breakfast spot for years, assume it still is. When our relative was fighting the Big C, Dickie V kept in close contact. Said he is the type guy off the court who would give a complete stranger the shirt off his back.

FYI if you go to Sarasota, don't go to Another Broken Egg looking for a great breakfast with (or without) Dickie V. The places were called the Broken Egg Cafe, not related to "Another." The owner sold the three restaurants a few years ago...two to a franchisee of Another Broken Egg who converted them, the third to someone else that renamed it the Original Egg. That's a good breakfast spot. ABE is just an overrated, overpriced chain IMHO.

I was there as well...as soon as Erv through that puppy down he made a right hand turn to a seat on the bench. Didn't even wait for the horn to be subbed out. HILARIOUS!

Ya I can put up with his schtick all day long knowing the guy is 80 years old, is the greatest college hoops ambassador ever and donates time/$ to his charities/causes as you mention and also takes the time to give even a ham n' egger like you a few phone calls..lol

I can only imagine how much money he generated for the owner. He mentioned the place all the time on TV and during his Bob & Tom appearances (used to do that once a week during the season for a few years). The place was awesome, tucked back into a little place in the heart of Siesta Key Village; haven't been there in some time, but it was fantastic.

I heard sometime back that he has a new regular breakfast place, probably came about around the time the owner sold the place. Don't remember where however.

Dickey V, as annoying as his shtick can be, was and remains a great ambassador for college hoops. He will be nothing but love and kisses towards UD, the arena and our fans. Perhaps this is the game that Bucky makes his return? That could be something special.

Ran into DV in Sarasota. He was at the same wedding a friend was attending. On the way to the reception, he takes pictures with us, and starts talking March madness. His wife has to come back for him. Kendall Gill era. Great guy.

On Dickie V

A remarkable aside.

Many years ago Dickie V was doing a UConn game at Gampel Pavilion. Before the game, dressed in a sharp blue shirt and tie....he had removed his jacket...
Dick was walking by the basket as the ball cart was wheeled by. He snatched a ball from the cart, walked to the foul line and popped one in....nothing but net.

The basket was directly in front of the student section and the kids howled for more. A cheer leader under the basket passed to ball to Vitale who proceeded to make ten....ten...in a row without a miss. There is only one time in the 30 years since Gampel opened that I have heard crowd noise like that.

To believe that story you'd have had to witness it first hand. I did.

This is fantastic PR for the program! logistically, game day was not an option because of the schedule and TV network requirements. This is about as good as it gets.

Like Erv Giddings, I received a T for attempting to dunk. Unlike Erv, my attempt hit the back of the rim and flew out towards mid court. I had never been that high up before and could not help myself. No dunking was the stupidest rule ever in college basketball.

Erv spent the rest of the in the Donoher doghouse. Donoher would have done the same to me if I was good enough to play for him. I was nowhere close.

I remember Dick V dancing with cheerleaders after the Detroit upset. Some idiot spit on him. Worst specatacle by a UD fan I ever saw. I did not like the dancing, but the spitting really angered me.

Sorry but tonight I lost all respect for Dickie V despite all the promotion he does for the sport and all the money he has raised for cancer research.

during a promo for the fight, tonight and they were showing (or talking about ) legendary boxers like Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard etc. and Dickie says "What about Floyd Mayweather?" Uh, Dickie, you support a serial wife-beater? A person who has been in jail for domestic abuse and you LIKE him?

Time to go away Dickie, supporting a domestic abuser is a dealbreaker for me

I’m not a Dickie V fan at all, but I also reject your holier than thou cancel culture mentality. Go Flyers!

It is in poor taste to promote a convicted domestic abuser.

He probably wasn't even aware of it. Hell, even I had to look it up.

Nice article but it's laughable that the DDN can't produce an article of any kind anymore without typos, misspellings, and/or omitted words. Whatever happened to proof reading?

Proof reading costs money and more importantly delays getting the article out on the web

Sorry to say (and here's no offense to Mr. Swampy) but jornalizem (see what I did there?) is no longer a collegiate sport.

The printed word is relegated to social media short-hand and oh BTW (see I did it again) there is no stigma on the display of stories that have the appearance that no proof-reading took place.

The informality that is typically displayed here is OK but the public display of journalistic endeavor once held to a higher standard is rarely seen now a days.

Dicky V. is like Pete Rose. When he played for your team you love him and everything he did was great. When he was the oposition, he was over the top and annoying. When Dick Vitale does your game he will make you feel like a million dollars because he is so enthusiastic you can't help but love him. However, when he starts talking about Duke.....

I personally am looking forward to the experience.

For all of you Dicky V. haters, I think he did a great job talking about our Flyers. He didn't just talk about Toppin, he brought everybody into the mix. He loved UD and he loved the crowd. He is more than welcome to come back in my mind!

He was certainly prepared and knew a lot about both teams, which is way more than you can say about most of the ESPN announcers we have had over the last few years.

How about Chatman "bombing" the post game interview. Funny stuff. Chatman wants to be one of the big guys, and last night he finally was. So bomb on Rodney.
