Grading the New Staff (sans CAG)
So it appears that the 'staff' is in place, complete and we are on our way once again!
So after all this time (in waiting with baited breath I might add) what do we think?
Some posted on various threads the plus and minus of all the rumored or ' in the loop ' names that could have, should have been hired. The conjecture is over!
So collectively what would you grade this 'staff' at? I don;t want to get into including A Grant in this since that has also been discussed ad nuseum in other posts. Besides part of what ever level of Head Coach you have, the staff is very important and an integral function of the program. The staff can help or hinder a Head Coach.
An assistant can help a slightly dis-functional HC or enable a HC to excel.
So what will it be? What grade does the staff as assembled rate? A, B, C, D or F????

My vote is for how folks look on paper and the potential as it appears. Nothing to go on as far as player development, game planning, or recruitment.
Wish they could have kept Kuwik on board since he didn't jump ship on his own. But we will know more on how well the staff are in the pipeline over the next few weeks as they try to fill the last couple of roster spots (specifically PG).

On paper. a B - hoping for a B or A in reality.
It's an F if we don't get a point guard and at least one good transfer.

On paper, looks solid. Other teams message boards indicated they would have liked to keep those assistants, so that's a plus. So I will rate them for now based on what we know.

When Archie came in, I said "Who is Tom Ostrom? Who is Kevin Kuwik?"
I only know small bits about the current assistant coaches. Common sense tells me that there are reasons these gentleman were chosen over others. Time to see who they recruit and how they prepare.

It's just a conversation piece. Just like NFL teams get graded on their drafts before the players even practice.
We know the program. We know what kind of guys have coached this team before. We know enough about the backgrounds of these guys to at least form an initial opinion.
To your point - we will have a much better idea of the quality of the staff in the coming days/weeks/months/years.
It's the off-season - what else are we going to talk about!

I am giving them a B just because I was excited that Kuwik might be retained, then he wasn't. Looking forward to AG proving me wrong on his decision, and best wishes to Kuwik wherever he lands.

So you only judge a car after you rode it? How did you pick a car out in the first place? Luck? Gamble? Advice?
You didn't read up on all these character's I suppose.
I assume you have avoided all judgmental decisions and responded with "PROVE IT!"
So I guess we wait then ...............

I still don't know a lot about Archie's assistants... Archie was in charge and everything whet through him.
When you look at the message board of AG assistants you at least get a feel who they are.

Greer is kind of a wildcard because this is the first time he can go off campus to recruit
Kane I had never heard of but the Murray State fans seem to be pretty high on him.
Soloman seems like a good hire

Having Soloman on board (who was an assistant in a few good programs, under good HC's AND himself a HC abet under tuff circumstances) seems to be a great pick. Other HC's picked him up and he stayed inside those good programs so that can speak well of him.
Hertz worked 19 years in U of Florida, so there is experience there. Not sure he will be involved with recruiting. But he has experience being 'On Staff'.
Kane worked with CAG so that's a plus. Suppose to be a very good recruiter so we will have to see how that works out for us. Having a previous relationship with the HC is a positive. Not having to learn what each other wants/expects can save time especially in the current situation.
Greer seems like the greatest unknown most likely his first true Assistant job. He may be the designated "on the floor practice player development" kinda responsible position.

If he is 1 of the 3 assistants, he will be recruiting. He may not be going after our top targets, but he will be out on the road.

My old boss has been on the board at Bono for many years. After the disaster back a number of years ago Solomon came in to save the program. In his interview with my old boss he said "you, a priest or a child can sit behind my bench and you will never hear a foul word from me, my staff or any of my players". Class act.

It sounds like a great staff. I gave them a B but if they can fix the inherited recruiting issues this year they deserve a well earned A.

Ricardo Greer spent a long time overseas playing pro, I wonder if he developed many contacts over there for recruiting

A lot of the pro teams over there are setup like the international soccer. The teams will use their lower level teams to feed into their top level team as the kids progress up through the age groups. Unlike the US, there are very few high schools that have sports, so kids join these "academies." I would guess that Greer has at least crossed paths with players and coaches from the lower teams while Europe.

While not an option, I think the proper grade is Incomplete.

What would everyone rate Anthony and his staff at this point. I really wanted to keep all of the recruits, including carter. With so many players coming in this season it could have been a train wreck.
Anthony and his staff kept Pierce, Davis and Svoboda which is very good on a coaching change
But, McKinley went to Colorada and we replaced him with what appears to be a similarly talented player.
Carter, who knows what he is doing at this point. But, we replaced him with a 6'8" guy who can shoot. On paper this doesn't seem like a bad trade.
I think Anthony and his staff deserve an A for their start. WE obviously haven't watched these new players in person or seen Kostas play. But, this went from being a potential .500 season to a season where an inexperienced team can fight for an ncaa berth. There is a lot of uncertainty with so many young players but it appears that Anthony has talent to work with
There will be even more interest than normal in the Red/Blue game with so many unknowns. Out of towners should start asking the university to stream it now instead of asking a week before the event.

On paper it looks to be a good staff, will have to wait to see what reality shows. while the Red and Blue game(practice) is interesting I don't put a lot of importance on it. A lot of unknowns this year. Will make for an interesting season. AG deserves a lot of credit, took a lot of broken eggs and appears to be making an omlette. His performance on the retention and recruiting front has been very good.

So far I like it. But it's going to take a few years to get the total picture. We will know quite a bit after seeing some coaching in games, but with only one recruiting slot open next year, to see the full impact of the assistants will take 2 - 4 years. Let's see who we start getting associated with in future recruiting, will be a big tell.
