UD offered Aaron Craft
a scholarship. He is 6'0" PG from Findlay who plays on Juwan and Adreian's All-Ohio AAU team. Once again he is from the 2010 class. He also just received a ship from Tennessee so it should be interesting. He said he wants to commit in the near future possibly early fall.
Look for him in the very near future! We are in very good shape!

Why do we need another PG with Staten coming in? Is Staten still solid? Can this kid play the 2g?

Well we are losing 2 PGs after next year...Warren and Lowery so they are trying to get 2 more. The only way Staten MIGHT leave is if Gregory leaves. Either way Staten is 100% Red and Blue from what I have seen. I am not sure if he can play the 2.

They lost in the State Championship game 2 years ago to North College Hill. Craft was a Freshman.

Looking up that championship game, Craft started that game as a freshman. They lost 50-45 and that was there only loss of the year, 26-1. He is also a 2 year starter at QB/DB for his school. Kid is a stud athlete. Over 2500 pass yards and 1300 rush yards last year with 35+ TD's. Both years they have made the playoffs. All-conference QB both years, All-Ohio last year. UD might lose out to football.

In the land of 6'5'+ QBs, his options as a professional would be much more limited than a 6'-0" PG. If he doesn't make the league, there's always Europe or S America. If he doesn't make it as a football player, there's not much he can do w/ football while making a solid living other than somewhere in the coaching ranks. I don't think many of those Canadian footballers or Arena guys make a ton of dough like you can make overseas playing basketball.
W/ all that said, I'm sure both could see the court at the same time, and it never hurts to have multiple options at PG. Don't know if one has the skill set to play SG, but having 2 kids on the court that can get the ball into the hands of Wright, Benson, Kav & Payne can't be a bad thing.
I would imagine BG would have floated this out to Staten prior to offering to see what Staten thought. They could be friends, and he could have welcomed the idea. Playing on the same AAU team, they already know how to play w/ each other, can't hurt in college.

I would guess him to be a DB in college. He was 1st team all-ohio as a DB. He also currently listed for football as 6'2" / 180

I love that he's a QB. It means he most likely has great vision and can anticipate things well. I saw a clip of highlights of him on his HS site and he looks like a very smart football player. He is also said to have led his AAU team in floorburns, which is what i love hearing.
I agree that he'd most likely be moved to DB if he played at a higher level after HS. His speed looked good on the clips, but not mind-blowing. So i don't know where he'd stack up in D1 football. He just seemed like he was smart with his cuts and his decisions. On the court, he's also able to knock down the three from what i read. A smart guard who can knock down the three will be just what the doctor ordered. Hope we can get him.

Maybe BG learned from the Trent Meachum experience that there really are no guarantees. Not to mention last years injury and flu epidemic we endured.

We've been complaining for three years that we don't have enough/any good point guards. Now we're going to complain that we have too many?

As far as I'm concerned, point guards are like pitchers; you never have enough!

yea..nothing wrong with too many PG's...and he got an offer from tennessee...it amazes me everytime that dayton is in the mix with these types of athletes. i get pretty upset with in game decisions from BG...but man when you look at the kids he is after and has considering dayton its hard not to love BG. i think eventually we land a couple of em...especially if we can get to the tourney, possibly win a couple.

I hope we get Aaron Craft just for the potential nicknames.
How about Air Craft to feed Top Flight Wright?

UD needs a good court leader, one who can think on the court without assistance from the bench. the more PGs the better the chance we can find one.

Being from Aaron Crafts area, coaching in the area, and being familar with his coach (Steve Williman), I can tell you he would be a great addition to UD. Probably wouldn't be much of a scorer, but could do it if needed. In Williman's system, the point guard truly is the leader. I know that sounds like a dumb statement, but he puts more emphasis on the PG position than a lot of other coaches. As for the floorburns, if you don't give 100% on a Williman team, don't count on playing...plain and simple. He has one of the most hard working disciplined programs you'll run into. Nice kid, great athlete, solid addition...and he's only a junior this year.

Two position player
Maybe Dayton could offer Craft an opportunity to play both Basketball and football. The BCS schools would only offer basketball since he is perhaps too small to play BCS football and would require a full time commitment in one sport or the other. He would be ideal to play Division 3 football and if BG would cut some slack at the beginning of the season (he would have two point guards in the same class) he could fit both sports into his schedule. And if after a season or two he finds that he cannot handle both sports he could then concentrate on basketball or if he and BG find he can not cut it in division one Basketball he could remain at Dayton as a football player.

Aaron will be visiting the University of Tennesse later this month. They are high on him after the nationals and feel that he can be a good player for them. His dad loves UD because it is close enough for the family to watch Aaron. He loves what Coach Gregory and his staff is doing, he feels that they are building a excellent program, plus he loves the thought of Aaron and Juwan playing together for another 4 years. Aaron himself list UD as his first choice at this time.

I seriously doubt that Gregory would allow/want one of his players to play football at UD. This happens occasionally (but rarely) in the upper reaches of D-1. Mostly its a football players that enjoys basketball, so the coach agrees to allow him to play to help ensure that he'll sign w/ them. Its pretty rare that a kid truely excels in both to the point where he could play either in the NFL or NBA.
if he plays football, thats going to cut into his preperation time for basketball. When you see this in major D1 ball, you most often see a kid that excells in football and plays that full time, then dables in basketball once football is over. Rarely do you see the Charlie ward type that had a chance to play either professional football or basketball.
It would put him at a significantly great chance of injury, and considerring he's get next to 0 looks at an NFL career playing football for UD (or any other Pioneer League type school), it really wouldn't help Craft. It will cut into his prep time for basketball, potentially hindering his odds of playing in the NBA or overseas.
No, Craft will not be playing both basketball & football for UD. Its just not going to happen.

So the coach agrees to allow him to play to help ensure that he'll sign w/them. My point exactly. Will BG do it, I doubt it too but it is a possible, if that is what it takes to have him sign on the dotted line.
The point is not would he play two sports after he arrives at Dayton but will the possibility of playing two sports be the kicker which seals the deal for the Flyers. He would no doubt soon learn that it is far too hard to play two sports and excel in either one and opt for the Basketball. The risk that it would take a year for him to learn this lesson is offset by Dayton having the luxury of having two point guards in that class.
The chances that Craft would be seen in a NFL or NBA Uniform at his size is extremely unlikely regardless of his specialization or the college. As an aside at the High School I attended the quarterback during my first two years was also a starting guard, he went to Pitt and started at Quarterback and played guard he was 5'11. My senior year at the high school also had a quarterback who also played guard he was 6'. When he graduated he was a high school all american in football and basketball and had offers to play basketball at Duke and North Carolina as well as offers to play both basketball and football at Pitt and others he turned them down to play Quarterback at Notre Dame. His name was Tom Clements and he led Notre Dame to a national championship but at his size he was too small to be more than a part timer for the NFL and had to make a career in the Canadian Football league and at 6' he would have had a difficult time making the NBA. In the Pros size does matter.

Quinn Buckner is another athlete that comes to mind. He played both football and basketball at Indiana (under the General). He ended up playing pro basketball, like Charley Ward.
Sounds like this kid is a strong possibility for UD. Let's hope!

I know there are kids that play multiple sports, but its becoming less and less likely. Heck, Ted Ginn was an all-american hurdler w/ olympic potential coming out of high school. He gave up track to concentrate on football full time.
Besides, we're talking about non-scholarship 1-AA football. I love UD football, have grown up on it as my father played at UD in the late 60s, but there is no chance that giving craft the opportunity to play football & basketball at UD is going to "seal the deal" Does BG really want a point that is only going to be w/ the team half the season, and who's offseason workouts/practices would be severally limited due to football practice schedule? If the only way to land craft is to allow him to play both sports, then I'd say pass, find somebody that wants to concentrate on basketball full time.

2 sport stars
LeBron James was a highly ranked wide receiver prospect in high school and draw Randy Moss comparisons. Of course, he was also critisized for playing football and risking injury. If a kid wants to try to play 2 sports I say let him give it a shot. However, playing DB would be prefered over QB. I'd rather have him applying hits than taking them from all directions.

My dad graduated from Stv, as did all his brothers, sisters, many of my cousins, grandfather, etc... LeBron was w/o a doubt the real deal at wide reciever. He could have played in the NFL. He wanted to continue playing his senior season, but his handlers wouldn't let him. Of course, I can't really blame him much. Based on what I saw as well as others observation there is no doubt (in my mind anyways) Lebron could have played in the NFL. Probably still could. Can't imagine what he could do at WR w/ that speed, height & leaping ability.
Interestingly, my grandfather was scouting refs for the NFL at a Marshall game. He once told me that he just saw the first football player that he thought could hold a candle to Jim Brown. That kid was of course then relatively unknown Randy Moss. I don't know if Lebron could have had the same impact as Moss, but he has very similar physical skills. Really the only question would be his ball recieiving skills. And w/ Lebron's freakish athletic ability, I'm guessing adjusting to catching balls off target would not have been much of an issue.
