New UnHoly Alliance Conference
At this point it is safe to assume the Big East is not happening. Ever.
And it is also getting harder to schedule teams as the P5 conferences are moving towards 20 games seasons. Archie lamented about this last week.
So we need a new conference. Here are the top 11 schools based on Attendance This side of the Rockies based on 2016 numbers that are not in the P5 or BE.
(25) UD - 12,941
(30) Memphis - 12,028
(37) Wichita St - 10,805
(40) UConn - 10,413
(47) Cincy - 9,415
(62) VCU - 7,637
(64) UTEP - 7,385
(68) Old Dominion - 7,037
(74) SMU - 6,907
(77) St. Lou - 6,757
(81) Richmond - 6,435
Others in the top 100 that would be notable.
(83) Temple - 6,373
(91) Bradley - 5,953
(98) UNI - 5,378
Replace ODU and UTEP - with Temple and Bradley / UNI - and it looks a lot more appealing of a schedule than the A-10.
How does this look for an Eleven team - 20 game schedule - UnHoly Conference.
(25) UD
(30) Memphis
(37) Wichita St
(40) UConn
(47) Cincy
(62) VCU
(74) SMU
(77) St. Lou
(81) Richmond
(83) Temple
(91) Bradley
I know - Uconn and Cincy are both waiting to join the ACC or Big 12 when that call comes. But that call is just as likely as the one we are waiting for from the BE.
In the mean time - all the schools above are committed to BBall - have good facilities and strong fan bases.
Flame away.

At what point will P5 schools make D1 scholarship football prohibitive for non-P5 schools? UAC has stated UCONN mortgaged the farm on their D1 football experiment and it is apparently causing considerable angst in Storrs. Most non-P5 athletic departments that sponsor D1 football are hemorrhaging money. MAC teams are in danger of failing to meet NCAA mandatory attendance figures. Is the next phase of conference realignment when non-P5 programs are forced to make the decision Dayton made 40 years ago with their D1 scholarship football?
Until that happens, I agree that there's no way mixing schools ala the Old Big East will ever work.

We don't have to actually form the conference just get about 8 of them to sign an agreement to play a round robin every year. I think our AD has been working on this idea.

Forget the football schools. I would be shocked if any would join a non football conference. They will stay put and hope they somehow get in a P5 conference. Football rules. Not hoops.

...until football gives into the pressure of head injuries and concussions. At that time, we could see more teams drop the sport under pressure from their faculty and administration.

And until that time......
Which I don't think is within the next 3 to 5 years.

What about a restructuring of the A10:
1. Dayton
2. Wichita State
3. Northern Iowa
4. St Louis
5. VCU
6. Davidson
7. Rhode Island
8. George Mason
9. St Joes
10. Richmond

I fear this is going to be an offseason on steroids. Ya'll can come up with these, crazy conference scenarios all day long but it is divorced from reality. First, the A10 has shown no appetite for forcing the lower tiered members to ship up or shape out. Second, you are rally dreaming if you think any D1 football school is going to walk away from that. Charlotte, Old Domion, and Temple are examples of how it is going the other way.
These hypothetical conference alignments remind me of when I was 10 arguing the reds could get some all star for four average players and the always important "player to be named later". Pipe dream.

How about Tom Seaver for Steve Henderson, Doug Flynn, Pat Zachary and Dan Norman?
Or Ken Griffey Jr. for Mike Cameron, Antonio Perez, Brett Tomko and Jake Meyer?

It was mentioned in a couple articles that our AD was working on this. He might have called it a "coalition of the willing."
This is a "doable do" that is why I love the idea. Like Springborofan says above Fanciful conference realignments are not going to happen. Getting several schools to agree to play noncon games against each other just in MBB is eminently possible and has occurred before. It would be like the Big-5 games in philly.

The only thing that seems weird about this is playing some of your fellow conference teams during the non-conference schedule. Other than that, it sounds like a great idea.

This wont happen but....It would be cool to have a relegation style league with someone like the BE. Top two-three teams go up, bottom three teams go down. You have to earn your way up, and try to stay there. In European soccer this produces different of levels in the leagues, as the battle to stay up is just as intense as the battle to win the league. Of course, the logistics of travel, scheduling etc are nightmarish, but would be fun.

That wasn't part of what Neil was suggesting. He had a few A10 teams, WCC, MVC, MWC etc similar top 100 type teams. Maybe 8 to 12 or so. You play 4 to 6 of them on H&H. Nobody in your conference.

Behind a pay wall. Lots of information exists on pay sites that the average fan don't see.

BTW several teams of high interest to UD fans have already signed on.....at least in interest.
