The Flyers Club won't be hosting a tailgate. Your best option would be to contact the Cleveland alumni chapter to see if they are organizing anything.

Are there any actually hotels in Youngstown? I'm not talking about a motel that you rent by the hour. I mean an actual hotel.

Anyway, I'm guessing the team buses up for the game in the morning and buses back that night.

Its been years since I've been in Youngstown, but yes there are actual hotels in Youngstown (well assuming you coung a fairfield inn or holiday inn as a "hotel" and not an "inn", I assume your just being snarky)

Gem City (ala Dayton Ohio)---seriously and your wise craking about Youngstown?

You'll be suprised at the Y-town campus and despite it's probably the best thing happening in downtown Youngstown-----honestly there as much or more going on in Youngstown than in Dayton (especially if you take UD and MVH) out of the mix!

Hotels in Boardman are fine and not to far away. More later on specific hotels and food options.

They are staying in a hotel, but I don't know if I am at liberty to say which one.

I think we should have the momentum when we play San Diego.....I'm hoping the stands will be filled on both sides and our players should be pumped playing a night game at home....now if we can get the University to plan something special like a major tailgating event?

Pioneer, that web site lists the Y-town game at Y-town for Thursday August 31----

I'm guessing that's somehow a mistake and the game on Thursday August 29 at 7:30 PM. Am I correct---trying to make plans and want to make sure I got the right date and time.

Check out the MVR (near the stadium) for food before or after the game! Locally owned and not a bad meal.

Just wanted to let you all know that tickets through YSU will not go on sale until Aug. 1. I was told there would be no official Dayton section, but the girl I spoke with sounded like she was not real sure of anything relating to the game other than the ticket sale date. Lol

"Weenie Games"

http://letsgoguins.com/showthread.php?tid=1022

"YSU has 3 weenie games early -- Dayton, Morehead St. & Duquense. 3 wins."

Well, at least one YSU fan does not think much of our Flyers, calling the games against us, Morehead State and Duquesne, "weenie games".

Here is to the Flyers increasing our record against YSU to 10-0 all time!

Got My Tickets!

With practice getting underway, and increased football banter here on the board, I got motivated to order my tickets. I asked for two of the best seats available where the Dayton fans will be sitting.... Ended up with two tickets in Section 14, Row 18, seats 9 and 10. I will be sitting behind and above the UD band if they make the trip, (I hope so). A bit pricey compared to a UD home game, $17.00 / ticket. It will be well worth it to see go 10-0 over YSU all time and to let the FCS world know that our Flyers are going to be the first PFL team in the FCS playoffs.

I'll see what the players parents get when they get ordered, We'll probably be in the nose bleed area. Any interest in tailgating as a group for the game ?

Penguins

86, it's a big stadium--you'll have room to move around!

Y-town State plays Michigan State in game 4 I believe so I would guess that most YSU fans expect/hope easy wins in weeks 1-2-3!

Lots of pressure on the YSU staff this year (year 4). I love my Flyers but YSU will be a load----don't think I'd bet to much on this one without a couple touchdowns.

Ron Stoops (Bobby Stoops oldest brother) is also on the defensive side of the ball for the penguins and the coaching staff feels like they finally have all "their" pieces in place. YSU opened last year with 3-4 wins including one on the road at Pitt but faltered at the end and didn't make the playoffs. They are determined that that will not happen again this season.

Also interestingly, YSU's quarterback is the Hess kid who graduated from CJ. He will continue to break lots of records at YSU this season if things go the way he plans. He's had an excellant career but had a tough junior year.

Should be a fun one to watch!

YSU non-con is Dayton, Morehead State, AT michigan state, and Duquesne guessing they will be 3-1 going into league play. So they will probably start off like last year, how they finish is the question. Have a grandson at North Dakota State and they will be loaded again this year.

DF don't be a pessimist, I was assuming they would beat MSU and their only loss would be to the Flyers.

Thumbs up Game day!

I sure hope the team is as fired up tonight as this fan will be.... Just checked the forecast and it said 0% chance of rain! Should be a bit warm, but not nearly as bad as playing at 1:00 PM on a Saturday this time of year. The key to a Flyer victory in my mind is a stellar offensive game, no turnovers, and an aggresive defense. I would really like to see two interceptions and two sacks tonight from the defense. If we are going to win, we absolutely have to complete passes down the field. I am hoping against hope that Bardo learned how to throw good passes while scrambling since last year on a consistent basis. If he can make plays and our receivers catch passes, (and run after the catch), we can win. Our defense can only keep us in the game if they are not on the field all night long. The offense has to put together drives and come away with points. Also looking forward to seeing our new kicker in action. I finally figured out why the DDN has put up a pay wall to Flyer Football articles. Now they can print information without worrying that the opposing team will read it. No one at YSU is going to pay for a DDN subscription to read the articles, so we are safe.... Oh well, if anyone out there does read the articles, a brief summary would be appreciated.

0-7

YSU scores on first possession

#4 Andre ... is fast.

YSU has YAC...yards after contact

We need a heavier short yardage /goal line defense

End of long 1st qtr...we had lots of Special Team work, diving intercept by Schwenke

2nd qtr nice 1st dn catch by corey staurt - his first! Bardo had nice end zone escape & pass for 1st dn.
YSU intercepted Bardo's pass behind receiver at 10 yd line
After punt to YSU 18 yd line, #4 Andre Stubbs takes it a long run past our tacklers#42, #27, #34
UD defense feeling bad...YSU takes it in in a couple plays...0-14 with 2:33 left in half.

YOU CAN'T TEACH SPEED

0-14 Halftime

1st half had decent UD defense to hold score down until last 3 minutes when the YSU long run occurred & def. looked very down & beat. (I worry about 2nd half def. start)

1st half offense only had a few good plays in the 6 first dns. on 29 plays. Passing was 6-13-1 int. yardage was 77 to 239. We can't run well so can Bardo do something special? Is a special team going to return some yards?

UD really playing like 5th place PFL team we all think is a mistake.

YSU a bit stronger physically on line & some RB's are faster.

Ground Hog Day. ...

Pathetic offensive play calling and sub par QB play....

Other than the interception have they mentioned a defensive players name?

Wish we could sub the Youngstown Grad who is in charge of the broadcast. Would love to hear the score after every point is made as well as some of the plays when Dayton has the ball.

Awful play calling. You have to be able to get a yard on the ground with 4 downs from the one.

10-28 score but not all lost

I enjoyed the YSU video feed; much, much better than UD...it worked with no buffering & had a time clock with down, yardage & score. Did WHIO ever broadcast the game? I turned off their commercials twice after watching 5 minutes of game...they were real late in my reception!

Interesting game because it did not go the way I thought. They ran over us with 367 yards to our measely 75 yds. We outpassed them 195 yds to their measely 73. QB Hess did not play well for YSU; but they didn't need him. Bardo played well occasionally and we needed more. Biggest disappoint was not scoring in 4 attempts from 2 yd line. That could have lifted our "D" but instead lifted their "O"..

Would you believe we won time of Possession 31:40 to 28:20? Amazing!

Speedster Gary Hunter played most I ever saw. Only 56 yds on 6 catches plus 3 returns. That means 9 tackles. HE WILL NOT LAST LONG AT THIS RATE! Use him long to loosen "D" not short over the middle. He'll get "killed"!

YSU playing UD & Morehead is like UD playing Central State & Tiffin. But if they don't, how can we ever play up? YSU had some RB speed & forwart push (yards after contact) that we couldn't handle. Tonight, USD would have beaten YSU! It was a good test for our guys. Thanks YSU.

After the first ysu drive, closer than the score indicates. An early interception near the end zone killed a scoring opportunity. 4 downs from the 1 yard line and we come away with zero. A couple of very long runs surrendered by our defense. We change those things, and the outcome could have been very different.

Anyways, we covered the point spread. Things do not feel too bad looking forward. I like our chances when we get to conference.

Much better start than last year. ISU was a blowout, YSU not so much. thought the D held up well, didn't fold in the 4th quarter. were we as good as YSU, no, but we did put up a competitive fight. Secondary played well. Offense, especially pass completions, could have been better. But maybe YSU has something to do with that. Looking forward to the Dukes game, believe we are a better team than last year, althought it is really early.and we don't know how good YSU is. Will be interesting to see how YSU's season goes

My 2 cents worth, the boys can walk away with their heads high....we played a 14 th ranked team in the FCS and gave them a game.....I'm sure when we get to Division play we will have worked out some of the details that need work.....clearly our offensive play calling is sub par in the red zone....coaches need to look in the freshmen pool and see if there's any RB's bigger than Connor....he just couldn't punch it thu. I also thought Pigs kicks were sub par.

Need to roll left handed QB to the left more often (and to the right less often)...too difficult for a lefty to stop and throw when rolling to the right under pressure.

I attended the ISU game last year and the YSU game last night. It is a night and day comparison. Last year, game was essentially a track meet (for ISU that is). Last night, with the exception of a couple plays, the Flyers battled toe to toe with one of the highest ranked teams in the country. Offensively, though there were some errant passes, I think we did a pretty good job. I know some were critical of the QB play, but at times he was under some serious pressure. YSU's defense was big, fast, and quick almost accross the board. I do agree the goal line offensive calls were borderline. I did not feel the play calls gave our young men the chance to succeed on the one yard line. That was definitely the crucial turning point of the game. However, I can say our team fought all night long, even to the end.

The play by Sebetic when the YSU tail back broke an 80 yard run, was incredible. Sebetic actually ran the back down from behind and caught him on the 2 yard line. It appeared to me that he was at least 10 yards behind the back at one point. Probably the most impressive defensive play of the night, for either team.

I suspect that next week, for our first home game, we will give Duquesne alot of fits. Here's hoping will build on this first week to garner our first home win next week!

North Dakota State beat Kansas state 24-21. YSU will have their hands full with the lads from the plains. NDSU would beat a fair share of the BCS schools

Great idea....unless he plays defense because of his hands?

That Receiver kid, #83, RS Freshman Corey Stuart did well Thursday in his first game & first three catches as a replacement for our suspended star, Branden Johnson.

Still worry about our 150 pounder running over the short middle & getting cold-cocked!

I don't think anyone penciled this one in as a win. As long as we didn't lose a player to injury we showed we can be better than last year going forward. Much better showing than the first game last year.

Wrong. I expected to win. If we made a few more plays, this would have been a victory. This attitude that we cannot win against the likes of YSU simply has to stop. It is just not true. UD not only belonged on the field with YSU, we should have won the game. With a Hoyng or Tino at QB, with their receiving cores, we would have won handily.

DF, please. "With Hoyng or Tino at QB.....".

DF, with Ruth, Gehrig and Dimaggio in the line-up the Yankees would be in first place.

Hoyng and Tino are not on the team. Really good players is why a team wins. And it's very hard to recruit really good players. Once in a while we come up big and have QBs like Hoyng and Tino. Once in a great while. Of course, if we had either one now the Flyers would be a much better team.

But, alas, we don't.

Nonetheless, Dayton did us all proud against a tough full schollie FCS opponent. That's what we want to see. Of course, winning is more fun than losing. But, losing the way UD did is nothing to be disappointed about.

I am ALWAYS disappointed when a UD team loses. If you are not than you are not a fan. Perhaps you should look "fan" up in the dictionary to gain a basic understanding of the concept.

How do you know we do not have a better QB on the roster? We have been stuck on Bardo for two plus seasons. He has never been more than average and more often than not, below average. Past time to give Luke a shot.

Our offensive play calling should of had him rolling out to buy time. Expecting our offensive line to protect the QB like we were playing Valparaiso was ridiculous. ... Our offensive play calling was dismal.

Trench Warfare

I am not an excited fan about QB Bardo either.

However, Thursday night was not a game for a drop-back pocket passer. It required a lot of scrambling. Think Bardo was the best choice. We actually out-passed them. We couldn't force enough running, especially from the 36" line!

IMO the game was won/lost in the trenches & the fact that YSU had so much yac (yards after contact). To prove this, look at the excellent photos on the YSU site http://www.ysusports.com/sports/fbal...s/dayton/index and you'll see:
  • Our offensive line blocking with their feet behind the line of scrimmage
  • YSU defensive with their feet on our side of the line
  • YSU had some ferocious tackling...sometimes more than just the ballcarrier
Here's hoping the battle in the trenches against Duquesne is more even.

DF, what I said was no one penciled this game in as a win. It doesn't mean I was not rooting for the team. Let me put it another way, on a straight up bet, would you have put a $100 on Dayton yesterday? I guess some excitable "fan" might. Any time the final score is that close, the loser no doubt had chances to pull off the upset. About the same chance
as Eastern Washington had against Oregon St. yesterday. I concede that upsets happen all the time. Are you willing to bet the Flyers will go 10-1 now?

Sounds like the same thing you said after the ISU game. YSU was better than us, it happens. I agree that we did belong on the field with YSU, but that we "should have won" is a stretch. You are not a fan of another team being bigger, faster and stronger, I get that. We viewed the game in different ways, we are all entitled to our opinion.

I need to get in on this

I must start by saying that I did not see one single play. The only way I can speak of this game is through the eyes of Coach Kelly.

During the broadcast, when it was up, Coach Kelly made numerous comments to the fact that we were outmanned, outsized and that at times Will was running for his life. Will does not have time to do much of anything. We are just outmanned up front. The line of YSU is physically so much bigger than ours.

These were the comments of a HOF coach. May be the ultimate fan of the UD football program. I understand about being a fan. I also understand about being a realistic fan. I think Coach Kelly was being realistic.

I'm going to take a different approach to the FCS-FBS upsets this week. The experts had many of these games with the FCS teams as underdogs. I'm contending that the top of the FCS is actually much better than you realize and would win at least half of these contests. You see in todays economic times the lower tier schools still offer scholarships. They are getting NFL talent at the FCS level. This used to be unheard of. Now it is commonplace.
If you noticed, our conference took hits to NAIA schools this week. They offer scholarships.

My point is that the FCS has a lot of very good teams that would win their share against FBS foes. Just like there are top FBS teams, there are lower tier FBS teams cannot compete with. There are many and I do mean many FBS schools that would not win very many games in the Missouri Valley Conference. That conference is legit.

We did line up with YSU. We played them well in the second half at times. We could have won that game if a couple of things went differently. The fact of the matter is that we cannot play with every FCS team. We do not have the talent, fan base, facilities that several schools have in the FCS. UD's goals are different. If you think we could even sniff the field with the likes of NDSU or Eastern Washington, Sam Houston State or Georgia Southern I would think you to be foolish.

The gap between the FCS and FBS is closing. Kids can now see that you do not have to go to a big name school to get drafted. Would you rather go to a BCS school and sit behind someone for a couple of years or go to a top tier FCS school and start in a year or two and have a great career.

To say that any FCS team should be able to line up and beat any other FCS team is disingenuous or you are truly blinded. If Alabama played Duke 100 times they would beat them 100 times. Duke cannot compete with Alabama even though they are both FBS and BCS conference schools.

Our team came out and they played their hearts out. Plays could have been called differently, tackles could have been made and passes thrown better. Maybe YSU had something to do with that. I think this team is improved over last year and our HOF coach thinks that we may have been outmanned a bit. I tend to think he knows more than I do, so I will go with what he had to say.

MK would not play these games unlike RC. He is biased and it shows. I did see every play. We could have won the game by making maybe 5 more plays and better offensive play calling.

bet? I do not control the play calling or execution. That is up to the coaches and players. IF our offensive play calling improves and if we play a QB and receivers that can make plays consistently, than 10-1 is possible.

UD football opener

I made the trip and watched the game in person along with a rather small but at times vocal group (as always) of UD fans!

I am so proud of our kids. It was clear from much of the coverage in the DDNews in the week(s) leading up to the game that our players/coaches were determined to do a better job in this seasons opener than they had done in last seasons opener against a similar "scholarship" opponent---and they did!

Just a couple "differences" that I felt were noteworthy that were confirmed prior to the game. One of YSU's tailbacks was a former FLORIDA commit (not many of those on our roster?)---who I was told" transferred to YSU after having some off the field "issues" that he has since resolved. Nonetheless, he is now playing for the penguins! The program clealry showed by weight, height etc. the difference between who is being recruited and rostered at YSU AND the differences in the kids who are suiting up for the Flyers!

I didn't quit know what to expect from this game (based upon what happened in last seasons opener for the flyers) and the expectations for this years Penguins now that the coach has 4 years of his recruits rostered, the fact that they opened last season by beating Pitt at Pitt, etc.

Our kids played there tails off! Our kids never gave up and could have----without a couple breakaways by the Penguins (speed, speed, speed--scholarships, scholarships, scholarships) we win the game!

I was extremely proud of our team and our coaches. Do I wish a couple things/plays would have been different, of course, but all in all---I didn't "expect" to win this one---but got more than my monies worth. ( I try to be realistic in my "expectations"--otherwise I sometimes get a little to upset at the final score)!

Hats off to our kids and the coaches. They were "on the feild" and understand better than any of us how much bigger, faster and stronger most of the players on the YSU roster were than our great kids----I would hope that they feel like they did there best and made us proud--despite the fact that I'm sure they wanted to leave Youngstown with a win.

It's one thing to be a "fan" of a team---and another to hold unreasonable expectations about a bunch of kids who pull on a UD uniform! There always seem to be a couple folks (who have or HAVE NOT) ever played a game---but feel that the team they follow (should be able to beat every opponent?)?

Honestly, that just ain't so when your a "fan" of a school like UD! Our kids made me proud, no stupid penalties, etc. and in the big picture, to me, that's the most important thing as a UD fan and alum.

Good luck going forward boys!

MichiganFlyer60 is on a distinguished road
I too made the trip and those of you that did and hung around after to hug your player after the game saw the looks on their faces. Can we agree to forego "moral victories"? Moral victories equals losing. This team being outweighed notwithstanding.. left 28 points on the field. I can think of several missed opportunities that had nothing to do with the o-line. we just didnt execute. Several dozen boys gave up their summer (many elected to stay in Dayton) to prepare for the season. I bet they are all disappointed in their play or in the fact that they didnt get a chance to get onto the field and affect the outcome. Time for the team to honestly address the issues and prep for Duquesne.
