So ILL Tournament
So Ill went 2-1 last weekend. UT Martin is 1-3 and Western KY hit it out of the ballpark by going 3-0 and upsetting #5 Wisconsin in Madison. They received a couple votes in the AVCA preseason poll -- but are now ranked #20 this week.
This will be a great tournament for UD. We play So Ill and UT Martin first and Western KY last. That gives us 2 matches to continue to make adjustments and improvements and reduce errors before going up against another ranked team.
I like the timing.

Game notes are out, amazingly I found them on Southern Illinois' website, not UD's.
Game Notes
The interesting thing to pop out to me, was that in the "projected starters", the setter is Katie Machi.

Just passed Carbondale encounter to vacationing in TN. I hated not being able to stop and hangout until 8 to see the match.

Not surprised Katie is the starter. She was after the first 2 sets last weekend too. And in my opinion she played the best. We will see if we are rotating setters every 6 rotations again tonight.

Just to clarify, do you really mean every 6 rotations, or do you mean every 3 rotations, or do I not understand the lingo properly? I can see them having Katie as the "back row rotations" setter, and Megan as the "front row rotations" setter. Rather than each of them going front and back row before switching.

Alas I mean exactly what I typed. Every 6 rotations. That means last weekend both setters played 3 in the front row and 3 in the back row. The starting setter was actually the first server and didn't come out until the spot was ready to serve again. I initially thought Katie for back row 3 rotations and Megan the 3 front row. But that's not what I saw under closer inspection. Every time a setter came in they started by serving

Of course now I am 2nd guessing myself. I know each setter started out by serving when they came in. What I didn't watch is if the only played the back. 3 rotations. I'm pretty sure I saw Katie in the front row with only 2 hitters. But I'm also pretty sure the setters and 2 right side OHs were subbing for each other. That seems like only 3 rotations. Basically I'll have to watch closer tonight. They might not do the same thing. I'll also see if they have last weekends play-by-play online. I'll check later when we get to the hotel. thanks figgie.

Flyers lose. Commit a service error at 23-24 in 4th set. That's like shooting yourself in the foot.

I think its safe to say we're not very good right now. In most years we beat a team like SIU 97 times out of 100 on any court.
We're already getting to the point where its time to start thinking about building for the A10. Nobody's gonna feel sorry for us. Just gotta keep working harder.

Time to start thinking about building for the A-10.....not time to start thinking about it, it's time to do it, nothing else matters. Only way we make the NCAA is winning the A-10 tournament. At this point we are our own worst opponent. Errors, errors errors, the killer bee.

Three weeks and fourteen matches until A-10 play begins. Any idea when Jane will be back. I'm not a student of the game but as others have stated, we aren't very good right now, and that may be a very kind evaluation of the team currently. Looking at the A-10 so far only two teams are above .500, GM and LaSalle. So, even though we are currently the only team that hasn't won a match so far, the league doesn't appear to have any real powers (including us) we can still win it all.

Jane actually played last night. I was surprised because she missed several weeks of practice. I don't know how much time she played, but she led both teams in assists with 45

It is starting to look like Dayton will be unable to build a strong enough resume to earn an automatic berth to the NCAA. (Unless they go undefeated from this point in the season)
As far as the A-10 goes, I don't think any of the other 9 teams have beaten a team as strong as North Dakota, Southern Illinois, Iowa State, or Marquette. They could all be top 50 teams. Dayton has had a very strong early schedule. In all honesty, I'm not sure we beat a top 50 team last year. Xavier and American were both borderline. So I don't think we have regressed. We just haven't improved much either.
GW probably has the best A-10 win with their sweep against West Virginia. But WV is not a top 50 team. And GW has a lost to Oakland, who also is not a perennial great program either. Rhode Island beat UConn. But once again UConn is not a top 50 team. Dayton still looks fine compared to the A-10 and should compete with GW, VCU, SLU, and Rhode Island. But unfortunately we at Dayton like to compare ourselves with the best in the country, and it doesn't feel like we are back there yet.

Flyers vs #20 Hilltoppers
Flyers take set 1 - 25-23
Flyers take set 2 - 25-19 - after being down 10-3
Flyers take set 3 for sweep- 27-25 (Wolf with ace on match point, Bruns with kill to get to 26-25 - frosh step up)
Now that is more like it ladies!

Keeping track of gametracker yesterday I was sure they had the wrong teams and scores updating. Winning the first game wasn't necessarily a surprise but coming from behind (6 pts)like they did in the second set then winning by 6 was a sign that Jane and company were indeed back.
Even without practicing she knows how to set Turner and company. No knock on the two setters learning but there is a learning curve as evidenced by Jane's return.
There is still time left in the non conf schedule to right the ship for an at large and put another poster in the "shut the pie hole", category

That is true but I would rather have a server go for it than to just pop it over unless you are completely dominating the other team at the net. Sometimes servers mess up when they try to take a little bit off and be careful.
Some servers are great hitting a hard floater but struggle when the coach tells them to serve softly into the front zones, I know that I would have. This staff charts everything so they probably know what particular servers struggle with.
What a difference a day makes, hopefully Jane is recovered from her injury issues.

We limited mistakes in the last two matches and got far more efficient. I think that as much as anything helped our cause. The first few matches as Becky and others were saying, we were gift-wrapping too many points.
Western knocked off Wisconsin in Madison last week so they are no joke. Very similar program to ours. By season end this will still be a great win. More than that though I hope its a confidence booster. Now we know we can play at a high level. Task now is to do it routinely.
