Golden Polar Vortex Award - St. Joes
It's always nice to see Toppin dominate an opponent, especially when Cunningham and Landers are AWOL. But don't let me sway your votes!
Nice win...stay warm!

Toppin will win... But, Cohill should be an option in the poll, absolutely sensational on Charlie... Reminded me of a former #3 lol

Mikesell, just too many big baskets when we needed it. But is Obi a force- his talent is undeniable. But its Chip in this game for me.

Agree on Cohill. His defense was stellar and the kid finished two fast breaks with a flourish. Clutch free throws, too. But Toppin and Mikesell should be co-winners.

Cunningham 3 pts, Landers 4, Crutcher 7 and Davis 8. How the heck are we supposed to compete with those outputs? Answer, Mikesell and Obi. Take what they give you, and those two took it today, big time.
And kudos to Cohill with 7 pts and great D.

Obi deserves the press for the points. I think SJU focused on Cunningham, and when both were in, they had no solution. Mikesell played well.
All that being said, Cohill changed the game. He shut down Charlie Brown, and was THE key to the swing in the first half. He’s earning more minutes the more he plays.

I was all ready to drive home and vote for Mikesell but Obi with career high in both pots and rebs is too tough to beat. Obi got my vote on a night it could have been a 3-way tie with Cohills D. Good to see the freshman contributing more.

Mikesell htnhis shots at crucial times for us. I’m really impressed in him this year. Even when the shots aren’t falling he plays with confidence. Very excited by his ability to finish at the rim. Great job by obi cleaning up around the basket and Cohill for defense and energy. Crutcher still leaving something to be desired. Should start with a better dedication to defensive end. Shots will fall eventually.

Obi will win many times going forward but Mikesell was the difference tonight. He hit shots at key times and his overall floor game was sensationa.
Cohill is playing the D over the past few games. His offense will come. He is demanding more minutes.

Voted Toppin AND Mikesell, with an invisible write-in for Cohill. Without his “What flavor of gum is Brown chewing, and how much longer will it last?” defense on the Hawks’ leader, this game may have a whole different ending.

Same. Brown was unstoppable, until he wasn't. Even though I often cringe when Mikesell puts up a 3, he hit some big ones tonight, plus a number of other hustle plays.
Not sure what was going on with Cunningham and Landers.

Too bad I couldn't vote for all of them plus Cohill. This was another game where everybody had to step up and help out with Josh having another down night.
Hard to believe how many fouls and travels were not called on SJU. Although it happens so often, I should be used to it by now.
It seemed that as soon as we took the lead at 8:03 to go in the first half, the Hawks started to get rattled and chucked up several bad shots.
Amazing stat:double digit offensive rebounds. Unheard of in recent history. How many put-backs did Obi have?

Obi changed the game on both ends. His block in the second half stopped St. Joes momentum and made them alter other drives inside. He got done what Josh couldn’t on offense.

I voted for Obi. St. Joe's game plan was to shut Cunningham down but with both Obi and Cunningham in the game at the same time their center couldn't guard both at the same time and Obi took advantage and really stepped up to the plate!
This two edged sword of Cunningham and Toppin is really going to be to our advantage for the remainder of our A-10 games and if Mikesell continues to play as well as he has been of late we will be a tough out!

No brainer... the Obi breakout night.
When Obi defends a man, he changes the guys shot. He gets into a shooters brain before he releases his shot. The Greek Freek2 did and now does Obi.

Cohill may have played great defense, but twice on offense he made boneheaded plays that defy royal common sense. Driving into the lane amongst the big boys without any idea what to do - and getting a charge the first time and majorly rejected the 2nd - stood out too clearly for me when making the Poll.
That's my story and I'm sticking with it!
Now, who's coming to lunch?!!!!

Mikesell had a great game but the game changed instantly when Obi enterred in both halves. I love Mikesell and Josh but since I’m not a socialist, I am starting to think Obi needs to start.

I like Obi right where he is right now. I would assume you would bench Landers as he would become the 6th man? Landers would also bring energy into the game, as well, as the 6th man but hate to mess up a good thing right now as Obi seems to be processing the game, what's happening, and what he needs to do upon entering....

Frankie's appearance was brief, but still impactful. Despite the air ball (he was a good 3' beyond the arc), he immediately had 2 great post feeds to Obi, leading to baskets...one being a 3 pt play.

Unless we’re playing a team with a more traditional three man front line, and there aren’t many of those left, I actually think Josh or Mikesell is the odd man out. Trey is our leading rebounder and a necessary defender against the ever more common three guard lineups.

Huh? He has a very sweet stroke and a quick (but not rushed) release. He's shooting just above 34% from 3 currently and his career average is very close to that. Did you mean to say that you cringe when Landers takes a 3?

I thought Frankie's entrance into the game was "interesting", and makes me wonder if CAG was trying to send a message to either Landers or Davis.
As far as the 2 great entry passes, the first one he performed to perfection, and Obi delivered on a great post move. Next time down the court, again, Cohill at the point, frankie on the wing, Obi posting up. Cohill swung the ball to Frankie, who looked for a fraction of a second at Obi and immediately passed it back to Cohill. When Cohill caught the ball, he immediately looked at Frankie and pointed at Obi as if saying "you dip, they can't gaurd that dude, throw it into him". Cohill swung the ball back to frankie, he pumped one way, then delivered a nice pass to Obi who made another nice move for the "and one".
At this point, the under 4:00 min kicked in and Cohill walks over to Frankie and immediately starts "coaching" him, and by the look of things, he wasn't mincing words. Meanwhile, coach Greer came out and took over for Cohill and talked to Frankie for a good 15 seconds. After all that, I thought it was a nice confidence boost that they left Frankie in after the under 4:00 (the air ball probably didn't help, but can't fault the coaches for that).
Couple things stood out to me, they had no answer to Obi down low. They were doubling Josh pretty hard, despite the 3 points, he didn't force much and looked to pass the ball out of the post which lead to several easy hoops. Last night was the first time all year that I thought Cohill looked like the top 100 recruit he was. Sure he had a couple of bonehead "freshman" mistakes, but I'm going to expect those, he stock to Charlie Moore like white on rice. Towards the end of the game, perhaps about 2:00 left, Charlie had missed another 3 pointer with Cohill draped all over him; I have no idea if DeWayne had said anything to him all night or not, but he was clearly in Chuck's head as they stood on the wing waiting for the ball to come up and offense to start, Charlie kept chirping, chirping, chirping and all Cohill responded with was a smile. Beautiful.
I wish I could split my vote between Chips and Obi, both were huge. Clearly, the best lineup CAG had last night was Obi, Josh, Chips, Cohill and Crutch, interesting to see how that plays out moving forward. Trey sat a good portion of the 2nd half.

My wife and daughter absolutely LOVE Sir Trey...and that's a royal understatement!
But even she noticed how much Trey sat yesterday and kept asking me why I thought he was out for so long. Without knowing why, we both agreed it had to do with effort, which typically isn't an issue with Trey. We also noticed the one time he drove to the hoop, missed the shot and for a brief second or two tried to complain about the 'no-call' instead of getting back on defense.
I expect better results from Trey vs Duquesne and St. Louis. Which is probably why Grant sent the message vs a weak St. Joe's team.

OK, King Rollo, got a ref question for you.
I know that they now allow dunking pre-game, however as the last act of "warmups" prior to the national anthem and player intros, St Joe's center (forget this name) throw down a dunk where he threw his arm into the rim and hung on with his "elbow" swinging from the rim for perhaps a second, maybe 2. Kind of seemed like something that would get a T in the course of the game. (at least in the old days, I haven't seen it called in a long time and there are several times that Obi hangs on the rim for extended periods of time)
Have they lightened up on the "hanging from the rims" technical calls of the past? Are pre-game warmups a no holds barred event for dunking now? This was easily the most egregious example I've seen all year, though in trough it may only be exaggerated b/c he hung on with his "elbow" rather than 2 hands.
Oh how I dream I had the ability to do something like that, even on 6 foot rim

The game yesterday dictated having Obi and Cunningham at the same time. Obi and Mikesell exploded, and that left Trey the odd man out. Trey will be back lifting the heavy weights. However, the writing is on the wall, Obi will be getting a lot of minutes, and Mikesell could be our best player.
Grant tried to get Frankie into the game as soon as Joes went to the zone, but there was never a break in the action. After a few minutes, Frankie got in and Joes went back to man. Frankie shot that awful three and his role was done.

Pretty much anything goes in pregame warmups...the only potential violation would be 'unsportsmanlike conduct' but nothing described above approaches that.

Beautiful.

I believe Crutcher was playing the point during the sequence you described. The TV color guy highlighted that too.

I said early on that Mikesell seemed to be shooting with some confidence. He looked pretty good at first then missed a couple and I think it started to affect him again. 3-8 is not great but I'd take that over our overall 5-22 last night. 5-22 is not putrid but it is bad.

Crutcher may have been playing PG, but it was definitely Cohill who forced the issue on Frankie with the ball above the arc. At any rate, I though it was an interesting look at Cohill taking on leadership with another frosh.

Mikesell caught the ball ready to shoot and most of the passes to him hit him in the shooting pocket. Both of those things have been a challenge this year.
Many game he has been tentative and taken a lot of time looking before releasing.
Other times, he may have been ready to shoot, but he had to field passes at his ankles or over his head.
There's no better look than when a pass hits a shooter in his hands where his shooting motion starts. That's a high percentage condition.

3 of 8 is 9 points for 8 shots. Pretty good.
5 of 22 is 15 points for 22 shots. Pretty putrid in my mind.
It seems Mikesell's rate goes down in the last 5 minutes of the game (he did hit a big 3 in the 1st OT at Bonaventure!), so I do cringe a little at the end of a close game when he shoots. Having said that, he plays within the offense and needs to take those shots (and I hope he makes them). If someone has measures that contradicts my "last 5 minutes feeling", I'd be happy to alter my thinking.

This year, the only 5 minute section where he has not hit a 3 pt shot he has attempted, is the last 5 minutes of regulation, going 0-6. His best points/attempts 3pt ratio is 1.5 in the first 5 minutes of the game (4/8) and between 15:00 and 10:00 in the second half, also going 4/8. (Ignoring his 1/1 in OT.)

Watch it again. It was definitely Crutcher they replayed it 3 times on the TV broadcast.

Ha, perhaps my memory fails me. None the less, I thought it was a good site seeing somebody take charge on the court, and reinforce what the coaches were obviously trying to get done.

Nice Archdeacon article on Toppin and Mikesell. Coach Grant's comments on Mikesell:
"It was Mikesell, though, for whom UD coach Anthony Grant had the most heartfelt praise after the game:
“I thought his voice, his leadership, kept us together when they were throwing haymakers and had us back on our heels. He did a real good job of calming the storm when we needed a voice to say here’s what we’ve got to do.
Offensively, when we came down, he made sure we knew what we were in and what we needed to do from an execution standpoint. It was great to hear him on the court, just understanding what we had to do at different points in the game and verbalizing that … to everyone.”

Three players stood out last night.
Mikesell has really rounded into a team leader. We have to remember that despite being a redshirt junior, he's only played a small handful of minutes with any of his teammates prior to this year (Cunningham and Landers played very few minutes in 16-17). It took him about 15 games to get his game on point, but it is and I don't see it changing for the worst.
Toppin is doing things that nobody else on the current roster is physically capable of doing. The stick-back slams yesterday were legendary and those type of hustle plays demoralize opponents.
Cohill changed the whole tone of yesterday's game with his defense on Charlie Brown. Dwayne was Lucy pulling the football away at the last second.
I'm voting for Cohill of the three. He didn't have the best game, but he had the biggest delta between expectation and contribution.
Edit: I guess I'm not voting, since like most elections, my preferred candidate isn't on the ballot.

Grant needs to offer Mikesell an assistant coaching job right now for when he is done playing.

And I think Obi must have read the board after the Mason lost because many on here were clamoring for him to get on the block and demand the ball...seemed he did that many times last night with great success. Hopefully a harbinger of things to come for the remainder of the season.

I wish I could split my vote between Chips and Obi, both were huge. Clearly, the best lineup CAG had last night was Obi, Josh, Chips, Cohill and Crutch, interesting to see how that plays out moving forward. Trey sat a good portion of the 2nd half.

I voted for Obi but Mikesell and Cohill had great games. Just reading the excerpt below regarding Toppin makes me want to vote for him for the next 10 games...
From DDN
"Asked if he's ever thought of starting Toppin rather than bringing him off the bench, Grant – while not ruling it out – said he thought it had been working out pretty well as it is was.
Toppin agreed:
“It really doesn’t matter to me. Whatever Coach needs me to do. Whatever the team needs me to do. I’m OK with it.”
He said those first few minutes on the bench each game are actually a good tutorial for him:
“I’m just looking on how they’re playing Josh. They usually play Josh kind of the same way they play me…I get a better understanding when I’m coming in the game from the bench…. I’m gonna know what to do.”
Still a freshman but you can tell he's a team first guy. I really like the quality of kids CAG is bringing in.
