Looks like Alford is staying at UCLA.
http://www.espn.com/espn/now?nowId=2...190536498738-4
Friends at IU are saying preference is an IU guy. Hearing that Dane Fife is a real possibility. If Arch is top candidate, there is no reason for them to delay decision now.

I think LaVar Ball is much more PT Barnum than interfering stage parent. Really, I doubt he is a concern to college coaches at all. I wish he would go away and I assume they do but he really hasn't interfered.
I think LaVar Ball's shtick is simply to gain as much attention as possible for his company so he can sell it for as much as possible to one of the major players. While annoying, he really hasn't criticized anything or anyone that would serve as a real distraction to the program unlike Staten's dad. Ball's statements are outlandish and to some of us borderline stupid... ok, past borderline. But none of them have been divisive as far as the team is concerned. I just don't think that is accidental.
While the next two up may not be near as good as Lonzo, neither is almost anyone else. It's a very good time to sell high. We may see much more of LaVar over the next 6 months as he tries to secure a sale before the next son even hits the floor. If he sells, I don't think LaVar goes away but likely fades. If not, I think he becomes old news and likely fades away. Although, someone somewhere is probably already pitching a reality show. Which really brings me to what i find most irritating about the LaVar story.
If an attention seeking parent doesn't have the media covering him, would he really make any news? P.T. Barnum.

Staten's dad is a kitten compared to Ball's dad.
"Gilling remembers an incensed Ball bolting straight for the locker room.
“He comes to me and says, ‘What are you doing? What are you doing?’ I said, ‘What do you mean? I’m trying to win the game.’
“He turns around and walks to our locker room,” Gilling said. “I said, ‘LaVar, don’t go into the locker room.’ He continues walking. I said, ‘LaVar, why are you trying to embarrass me?’ And he just kept walking and goes into the locker room. He’s in there sitting down with the team. And I’m like, ‘LaVar, get out!’” Gilling says Ball refused to leave the locker room, so Gilling told his team to follow him back to the hotel while Ball’s sons, LiAngelo and LaMelo, stayed behind.

Give me 1000 Staten's compared to this *ss.

Jon Rothstein, Jeff Goodman, and many others have reported it on Twitter. Same people that reported Archie to IU.

That is a GREAT hire. Dambrot would be down a ways on my list for UD but totally on the list. Much better hire than some of the guys that turned them down. Dambrot might just make them relevant. And that's saying something. Well done.

I have been impressed with Dambrot for years. He will almost assuredly make the Dukes relevant again.
Very surprised he'd leave Akron for Duquesne of all places, especially after turning down a similar dumpster fire at South Florida a week ago.
Good luck to him. We'd better hit a home run with our next hire, things are about to get much more difficult with Dambrot's hire, with Travis Ford getting SLU back on track, and with Danny Hurley apparently sticking around.

Well he better hurry because they have essentially had their entire starting lineup ask for their release. I read that they only have 4 or 5 players committed to return.

Wow, that's a great hire for them considering who turned them down. I would not have been happy with him here, but I think he could definitely make Duquesne into a top half of A10 program.

Kind of depends who we hire though. If they hired Paulus or the guy from Ball State whose name I refuse to learn, then Dambrot starts to look really good.

Yeah, Dambrot is a good hire for Duquesne, and thus for the A-10. The only question is, will the Duq brass give him the re$ource$ to make that program consistently competitive for the first time in my adult lifetime? Time will tell.

Great hire by Duquesne, great job by Dave Harper. I did not know that KD was LeBron James' high school coach.
He has over 300 wins at Akron alone.

Looks like ex-UD assistant Dan Hipsher brought Dambrot back into college basketball in 2001. Duquesne has not made the NCAAT since 1977.

You have to wait for the other shoe...in a few weeks Duquesne's going to announce a new women's studies professor. It's like hiring a recruit's dad to be an assistant coach.

That is true and there is quite a story behind that too. Let me just ask you how many times has a school fired their head coach and immediately hired one of his assistants? It smelled. It smelled really bad. I wouldn't go near the guy. Don't ever mention the guy's name to Dan Hipsher.

Or Don Donoher. I know there was a lot of bad blood when this happened. I do not think Dambrot would even be considered while Donoher is still around.

Be the best at what you like the best at where you like to be best at. Griffin talked about his options all of which were as assistant jobe, Dayton, Syracuse and Indiana. Even said who knows the new coach may want me to stay on at Dayton. Sounds like the AC's all like it here and would stay if asked....could be wrong......nah

Wonder if we would give Lamont Paris a look. Wisconsin Associate Head Coach, coached at Akron with Dambrot before going to Wisky to work under Bo Ryan.
He's from Findlay and went to Wooster. He recruited Nigel Hayes and I think most of their Ohio guys. Wisconsin wins consistently and seems like they've got a good eye talent

If going the assistant route, he would probably be a good choice. But I feel like UD has to get someone with head coaching experience. Otherwise, just hire one of Archie's assistants.

The rumor is John Groce may get the Akron job, but if he does not, he will be hired on as the top assistant for Archie Miller (has history coaching with Archie).
One school of thought on this is that Groce to IU would make Ostrom less likely to join Archie's staff because he wouldn't be #2 on the depth chart.
But another says that Groce was basically runner up for McKinley Wright and suggests that Archie + Groce would be enough to take him from UD. Archie + Groce + Ostrom and might as well forget about him.
But I suppose Groce to Akron would probably be marginally better than him joining the Indiana staff for Flyer fans. Probably.

It was between UD and Minnesota I thought. When was Groce in the mix?

McKinley made an official to Illinois. They were a finalist I believe. Minnesota was a finalist as well but their situation has changed since they secured another top rated PG.

Illinois - the graveyard of talented players. That program takes potentially good players to new lows. No growth or development there.

McKinley's not going there, but he liked their coach who is going to resurface (just thankfully not as Dayton's head coach).

Supposedly Alan Major who assistant Ohio St and was HC at Charlotte could move from an administrative role at Ohio St to an assistant at Indiana. He's from Indianapolis and went to Purdue.

If Groce goes to Akron OU fans will probably go nuts (or laugh their butts off). That would be like Archie getting fired in a few years and going to VCU.

ALAN MAJOR? Please tell me he hasn't shaved his head. The man's hairline was glorious! Looked like he was sporting a yamaka at all times. Major deserved to be fired from UNC- Charlotte, but not as much as his barber did.

Look at players like Nunn and Tate (former HS teammates of KP). Illinois is not a place to grow and develop!

A Purdue assistant took the Miami job, so Major could go to Purdue.

Brutal, he only was hc for 4 years.
He put in 6 or 7 years at NM as an assistant prior to becoming the hc.
Brutal...the AD just gave him a statement of support 3 weeks before he was fired.
The below quote sound a little ominous, I wonder if something more than wins and losses played into this decision?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Neal#New_Mexico:
On March 31, 2017, New Mexico fired Neal 3 weeks after Lobos AD Paul Krebs announced that Neal would return next season.[5] Acting university president Chaouki Abdallah stated: "The decision made late tonight comes after lengthy consideration in light of recent developments that cannot be ignored."[7]

Yeah, Groce would almost be better off taking a gig in the Horizon, the OVC, or the Sun Belt as compared to taking another MAC job. At least, this soon after getting the axe at Illinois.
Maybe Ray Harper needs an Associate HC?

Would you rather have an alum with 9 years of head coaching experience in the college ranks and 2 years of pro experience or someone who has been an assistant in the pros for 12 years. No college recruiting experience, no head coach experience. Some one mentioned in one of the threads that the AG hire reminded him of of the Lowe hire at NC State. THIS reminds me of the Lowe hire. And, I'm going to go out on a limb and say Ewing will crash and burn at G'town.
As a Dayton fan, Im much happier with AG than Ewing.

Per Jeff Goodman, San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher is retiring. Coach-in-waiting Brian Dutcher will take over.
