Golden Comeback of the Year Award - Duquesne

Call it what you want, but that was a hell of a game. The first 25 minutes was some of the worst basketball I've seen since...since...well, since I reffed those 3rd grade girls this morning...but those last 15 were royally awesome.

So who's going to be the the Golden Comeback Award winner? To me, it's a not-brainer. But the last time I thought it was a no-brainer I was taken to the toolshed be a number of well respected UDPriders who reminded me that career highs in points and rebounds aren't as important as a late steal or contending a missed shot or two. So today's Poll will include everyone, just to cover my Royal *ss!

Go Flyers!

My Team.

King Rollo the All-Inclusive...OUT!!

The first 12 minutes was an awkward 5th grade dance. Just brutal basketball.

Thought AG made some gutsy adjustments with Cunningham. Thought JD played great D in the 2nd half. Obi & Cohill continue to earn minutes with good play and occasional freshman miscues. Good to see Crutch & Cohill hit some big 3's. Stats are stat's. Teams & players usually revert to their respective average. They we hot in the first half, and came back to earth in the 2nd half. Dayton, the opposite.

Fun game to watch, great to be a Flyer.

Toppin most of all, but voted for Crutcher, Davis (defense on Carry), and Coach Grant too.

Crutcher was great in the second half (not so in the first) but there is no way anyone should get a vote other than Toppin today. Not only did he do it offensively but he did it on D too.

I forgot we had multi-vote now, but still Toppin would get 2/3 of my vote, with the rest being split among:
-Davis, for his defense on Carry (and a couple of well-timed baskets);
-Cohill (see “Davis” above);
-Crutcher (who won the “Willis Reed Return From Injury” award today); and
-Coach Grant, who once again showed that not everyone gets a trophy, and if you’re doing what’s expected and needed, you’ll play.

A much-needed win over a much-improved Dukes squad. Now, let’s go on the road and steal one on Tuesday!

I have to vote for Obi. No one close, but second place to Davis for his D on Carry.

I give credit to Grant for switching Davis to Carry in the second half, but why not do that sooner, or the start of the game. Same last game putting Landers on their stud, and then switching to Cohill. Kudos to Grant for half time adjustments and getting the team to play better D. A demerit to Grant for now fouling on Duq last possesion when we had two fouls to give.

Obi for exploring a new dunk that rips through the net so hard that it bounces off the floor 30 ft in the air and delays the inbound of the opposing team an extra 3 seconds.

Definitely some adjustments and credit goes to AG.

Big difference started 0/9 from 3PT and then finished 5/7 last 15 minutes so 5/16 for the game; started 6/11 FT and then finished 5/7 last 15 minutes so 11/18 for the game. Missed open shots the first 25 minutes, made them the last 15 minutes.

But love Grant's gameplan, make Dukes make 3s. Started 4/7, then wen 4/21 rest of game for 8/28 for the game. Cringed when he was not putting Josh back into the game, but it was the right decision.

Obi was great offensively and cannot underestimate how we was a game-changer on the offensive-end. But he needs to give the same effort defensively. Obi played 34 minutes and had 2 defensive rebounds. Dukes missed 43 shots for the game or about 37 shots when Obi was in the game. Obi had 2 rebounds on those 37 shots or 5.4% possible rebounds. Average player with 10 on the court should have gotten 4 rebounds. With Obi's size and ability, should have had 8-10 rebounds. Needs to up the defensive rebounding effort massively. Sometimes he is blocking shots that put him out of position. But way too often does not box-out, does not attack defensive glass like attacks offensive glass, and leaks-out not hustling to grab defensive boards. Obi is the best player on the team now. He is a freshman and is still learning. But needs to give defensive effort all game to get to the next level.

I would say Obi was 75% responsible for the win. The other half goes to Crutcher.

I don't know about defensive board stats, but Obi turns somebody back from shooting or disrupts something with his presence on nearly every possession, IMO. He is a rim protector of top quality. When a small guy drives on him, he may turn the corner on Obi, but often decides not to even attempt a shot near the rim and ends up dishing to the perimeter. Sometimes they get a shot off, but they twist and contort and take a high degree of difficulty shot. If you take a shot within 8 feet of Obi, he is probably factoring into your shot.

I voted for Obi. He carried the team on his back in the second half! When he brought the ball up the right side of the court on the fast break he was like a point guard when he took it all the way to the hoop. The guy riding his shoulder didn't have a chance! It reminded me of the way All American Danny Manning of Kansas used to bring the ball upcourt.

C'mon Rollo, if you're going to be inclusive you need to include the strength & conditioning coaches who are helping fill out Obi's rail thin frame. Throw in the lunch lady too.

Obi's play this week will probably secure A10 co-player of the week award. As we all know, it's a rule that no Flyer can win it outright.

The guys knock down 4 threes in a row and AG is a genius. First half he "needed to make adjustments" and coached poorly while we went 0-9 from three.

AG didn't coach badly, but if the same guys shooting the same shots missed them, we lose and AG is a goat for not playing Cunningham for the whole second half.

Kudos for having it work out, but I think too much is attributed to brilliance and not enough to luck. (Edit for internet chat boards: note I did not say it was 100% luck.) Or just being the better team.

Either way Obi is the answer for superior ability.

Cohill's "well time basket" was THE WELL TIMED BASKET as he took the lid of for our barrage of 3's that put us back in the game.

You are showing your age with the "Willis Reed" reference! Living in NY at the time, that was a gr8 moment/game/championship.

Obi Toppin

I have watched UD basketball for nearly 70 years. Obi Toppin's game with Duquesne was in the top five ever. What a magnificent performance. He is IMHO the anti-Antetokounpo in that with little advance publicity while sitting out his red-shirt season and getting his academics in order he worked on his game and body. His performance as a Freshman is mega years beyond the actuality of the Greek Freak's bro. Obi just may make it to the Association based on his performance. Dayton may be lucky to have him for 3 more years.

Crutcher is really good. Easy to get lost when you talk about Obi.

We need more depth with ball handling, and for resistance to getting worn out across the whole team. We need some wide-bodied lane players to throw into match-ups against big physical teams. Hopefully, that all falls into place by next year. We could potentially be a very complete team.

Anyone questioning Obi's effort wasn't watching the Obi I was watching.

Obi gave everything he had on both ends of the court. Period.

Obi constantly was on the prowl looking to disrupt the action on the defensive end. 4 steals to show for just part of that effort.

The rest of the time he was going after blocks and although he had only 2, he altered and disrupted more than that.

When a shot blocker leaves his man to block a shot, it's up to the rest of the team to rotate and put a butt on the player left. Sometimes it happens too fast and there's not enough time and/or space.

Did Obi go for a block or two that he shouldn't have, when he should have stayed glue to his guy for the box-out instead? Perhaps.

That's a give-n-take you always have to live with from a shot blocker. It is not an effort issue.

The second half I saw from Obi was one of the greatest consecutive 20 minutes I've ever seen in person. And I've watched a ton of college basketball games.

His effort, intensity and get-on-my-back-and-let-me-carry-you-to-victory mindset was off-the-charts inspiring to me.

Obi will be a highlight reel if the team can start getting more fast break opportunities

I kept wondering why we were not attacking the press more during the game. My theory is that Grant thought that Duquesne was trying to draw us into more of a running game, which would wear down Crutcher, who is by far our best ball handler and floor general. If we had more depth, especially at the point guard with a guy who can run the offense and handle the ball really well, I believe we would run a lot more.

We are a lot better this year than I expected us to be, especially with Obi blowing up, but I don't think we are the class of the A10 yet. Our limited depth and lack of physical big bodies in the paint is what I think holds us back this year. I expect us to be a very strong contender next year, assuming the transfers and new players pan out like I hope they will.

I think we should push it more off misses than we do now. Not sure what the thinking behind not doing that is

The biggest problem I think we have in terms of the fast break is not being able to force turnovers. UD is 324th in the country out of 351 teams in turnovers forced per game. It doesn't seem to me that there's that disruptive guy on the defensive end this season

Flyers would have lost by 30 if we were Obi-less.

I remember missing a bunch of fast break opportunities in the last few games. Davis in particular just didn't finish. I don't disagree that we should selectively run a little more but I don't think that is the mindset with the short bench.

It all comes down to not fouling, due to our short bench. I am sure the coaches preach not reaching, playing good defense, but not being overly aggressive on double teams. Aren't we near the bottom in fouls per game
