UD Wins A-10 Title
What a game!
The arena was electric before the game. Not quite the aura of an X game, but close.
This game was Rocky vs. Apollo Creed. Two teams punched and counterpunched. Give credit. VCU is a very good team. They NEVER backed down. UD fought from behind most of the night.
How do you describe the game? Another flat 9-0 start. However, this was the team that beat Richmond Tuesday, not the team that laid an egg against URI. They fought back. Every time UD fought back VCU punched back. VCU led most of the game.
Was there luck involved in the win? Probably... and some great plays. Kyle makes an awkward shot in OT for the lead and makes an incredible steal on Tillman. Tillman had a game winner and he lay on the floor pounding it after the steal knowing exactly that. of course, Kyle makes it interesting and misses 2 FTs. Kyle knows how to make crunch time plays.
I though the VCU coach blundered by calling the timeout with only 1 second left. It allowed UD to set up the defense for a what became a desperation shot. They might have been better calling for timeout right away after the miss.
Two VCU guys are studs. Allie-Cox is great shot blocker and Tillman was amazing on the boards. Hats off to them. Give respect to VCU.
How about those Flyer!!
Scooch with career night Tuesday, only to be topped tonight. VCU could not stop him. The offense was designed to let him overwhelm the defender. He hit one three that was ridiculous deep. He was on tonight. He carried the team. Pollard and Pierre missed a boatload of close shots inside. Pierre and Pollard hung tough even their shots did not fall. They played hard on D. I spoke already about Kyle. Incredible finish for him.
The defense gave up 3 three points shots to start the game. After that VCU went 2-17!!! UD played much better D than the last 3 games. Much better.
UD down by 4 less than 1 minute in regulation. Comes back. UD down by 4 in OT. Pollard and Pierre both foul out. Steve and Z finish the game down low. Amazing!!!
Other observations. Allie Cox is a great shot blocker, but he was worried about foul trouble and did not contest a number of shots. Tillman is a stud on the boards.
Steve stayed out of foul trouble for a change. Scooch found him down low several times. Steve did not always convert. As Steve develops, strength, That could become an awesome offensive weapon. Steve had a number of rebounds. Baby D made contributions. Cooke struggled on offense but a really tough 3 and a great and 1 drive to the hoop.
Crosby and Mikesell did not hurt the team during their fill in minutes.
Final observations about VCU.
They had 4 turnovers in the first half. They must have had 6 in the first five minutes of the second half. UD stepped up on D and VCU also made some dumb unforced turnovers. UD made some unforced errors in the first half too. Balanced out.
VCU is a better rebounding team. They went after every rebound and killed us on the glass. The final numbers don't tell the story enough in my mind.
This was a very tough win against a very good team. The crowd was loud, registering over 100db at times. The crowd was vocal harassing the refs. In my opinion, the refs called a more balanced fair game than the fans gave credit.
Finally, Archie talked about winning championships when he arrived. Last year, they failed to do so on the last day. This year, they did it!!!

Great summary STF, but you really should change the title!
Tillman reminded me of Rodman at times. He was a stud on the boards.

Good point. Poor grammar. Fixed...
Or so I thought. How do I edit and fix a thread title?

Mo Allie Cox had about 15 body fouls. He was only called for two.

If you watched Tillman closely, he really didn't box out for rebounds. He waited until the shot was in the air and just worked his way around the Flyers and somehow he could secure the ball. The guy has great hands and superb body control around the basket. He is a really good rebounder and finisher around the hoop. He and Cline are both outstanding forwards.

This. It was a shame Pollard wasn't at 100%, because everytime he drove the right side, Mo Alie Cox played bullfighter, saying "Ole'", and got out of the way. I really wanted them to expose that, and they didn't.

You can see a great view of one potential "body" foul on Kyle's game-winner. He drives the lane from in front of the Flyer bench, Alie-Cox rotates in to contest the shot, and the 2 players collide in mid-air, almost exactly as Kyle is releasing the shot. Probably should have been an "and 1" on that play.

Does anyone have a video of Kyle's steal? And Tillman on the floor after?
Allie-Cox wanted to stay out of foul trouble and backed off a few times. I wish they have pushed more. A stronger Kendall could have exploited that.
Tillman's rebounding effort last night should be shown on every instructional rebounding video.
This was a VERY good VCU team that UD beat last night. After being flat a week ago, the team played hard with heart and soul.

There is no doubt that should have been an and one. There was way more contact on that play than the foul that they awarded on Lewis just moments earlier. My biggest knock on college basketball is the inconsistency with foul and travel calls. And I don't mean from game to game I mean within game from official to official and by individual officials throughout the game.

Awesome video of Kyle's steal at the end.
2 things though...
1. The fans put their hands on their heads when VCU steals it, then start clapping when Kyle steals it back.
2. Kyle wasn't established on the court when he stole (well, tipped for the steal) the ball. (does he have to be? rollo?)

Regarding point 2, as it was my first observation, I believe that should have been a violation on KD. Wow, can you imagine THAT call having been made?!?!

We had 10 turnovers at halftime. We finished the game with 12, means we had 2 in the final 25 minutes.
Justin Tillman had 21 rebounds. 21! We were outrebounding them 26-18 at half, and finished getting beat on the boards 52-48. Meaning we lost 34-22 in the second half and OT.
How many bullets did we dodge?
Pierre fouls out with 1:16 left... they miss the FT, but Alie-Cox out-muscles Steve for the board and stickback gives them a 3 point lead.
Big Steve misses a bad shot, then fouls Alie-Cox on the rebound... but he only makes 1 of 2 to make it 55-51 with 50 seconds left.
Kendall, who has a certified case of Bad Free Throw Form makes 2 to cut it to 55-53 with 34 seconds left.
Kyle Davis with the foul... Doug Brooks misses 2 FT's!
We call a timeout, and I don't know if it was the play we called, but it was brilliant! And Alie-Cox plays a bit of the ole defense to let Scoochie lay it in and tie the game!
Melvin Johnson misses a jumper, and Doug Brooks is all by himself... to miss the layup and send it to OT!
A night to forget for Doug Brooks, he blows 2 chances to seal the game.
In OT, Pollard fouls out with 3:22 left, meaning we are playing the final 3:22 without 2 of our best players.
Melvin Johnson hits a basket to put them up 4 with 1:40 left.
Kyle Davis layup is blocked OOB by Alie-Cox.
Charles Cooke, who has a certified case of the Free Throw Yips hits 2 with 48 seconds left to tie the game.
X is called for a real questionable foul on a JeQuan Lewis drive... Lewis only makes 1 of 2 to give VCU a 1 point lead with 27 seconds left. JeQuan Lewis is an 83% free throw shooter!
KD makes the layup, then we get a stop.
KD throws it away on the inbounds! Then steals it back (without re-establishing in-bounds)! Then misses both free throws!
Then VCU is so disorganized on the FT miss, that it takes them 5 seconds to get it across mid-court and get a TO. I thought they would just drive that ball to the basket and hope for a whistle.
Seriously, someone tell me how we won this game.

Introducing Cedar Point's newest roller coaster: The Kyle Davis! Seriously, that Davis stretch at the end of the game was one of the strangest sequences I've seen in a long time: ballsy layup to take the lead (because he gives no [effs]) (hooray!), throws away an in-bounds pass (no!), immediately steals it back (hooray!), then misses both free throws (no!). Wow.

Even though there was 1:16 left, I thought that was the game, honestly. We just had the high of Pierre's put-back slam, VCU missed, and then...that. It punched me in the sack. Thankfully, the Flyers are made of tougher stock.

Kyle, who is usually cool, completely panicked on that pass. Terrible judgement, as he rushed it, and should have faked it and lobbed it over the defenders head. Thank goodness his instinct took over to jump in and knock the ball away.
I did appear that Kyle did not establish his inbounds position (one foot in bounds before making contact with the ball), and it should have been VCU ball. It was bang bang and Kyle's foot hit a milli-sec after he hit the ball, which is why the ref missed it.

Fun thread to read. They gave a fair amount of credit to Dayton's D and to Schooch for carrying the team. Lots of love for VCU's stud rebounder, which is well deserved. Obviously they were lamenting their FT shooting. You'd be amazed how many of them were mocking UD cutting down the nets, particularly since it was a three-way title. A title is a title. Why not have a little fun with it? Not that big of a deal to fuss over.

Makes up for the refs pocketing their whistles on Kyle's game-winning drive with 0:16 to go. 2 guys converged on him as he started his move to the hoop, then Alie-Cox initiated the contact under the hoop just before Kyle released the shot (and even took a swipe at the ball in the process). Could make a strong case for that being an "and 1" that they missed.

I have watched that several times and thought the same thing. There was a lot of contact during and after the shot. Like you, I believe it should have been an +1. It was certainly a spectacular layup. Say what you want about Kyle, the guy is a complete money player.

hard game to watch . but a Gut CHECK game!
Kyle with some big plays. DP with big stuff at the end.
Big Steve was awful. Sloughs off his man too much to try to alter EVERY shot.
VCU caught on, and started to interior pass to Mo Alie and Tillman and the bigs more. Awful positioning by Stevie Mac... Guy was pretty solid for 15 games, boy has he gone backwards.
Need Kp come ncaa time. Wow, so many ups and downs.
DP will be fine. Just hope Cooke and Dd can find a shooting rhythm. Scooch can only carry us so far.

Another taboo "failure" of the program has fallen by the wayside under Archie. "We need to win a regular season title". For those of us who have browsed this site since before it was "this site" (The mid-90's?), you know what I mean.

I have watched the missed put back by Brooks on DVR multiple times and it looks like Scoochie's hand may actually hit the ball and give it an overspin that made it roll off the rim. Did anyone else see this?

Yes, I think Scoochie got enough of it to disrupt the shot.
