What we’ve learned so far ...
Win or lose tomorrow, we’re watching a team grow up in real time. We hung tight with the No. 4 team in the nation (possibly a tad overrated) and dispatched a decent Butler team with relative ease. So a few thoughts ...
1) There isn’t a team in the A-10 we can’t beat. But it’s still going to be a slog. VCU looks better than advertised, Saint Louis is formidable, and ditto St. Joe’s. I now think we have a realistic shot at winning this thing.
2) The offense needs to flow through Josh. He’s just money down low.
3) Obi will make mistakes, but this guy is the real deal.
4) Trey is tough as nails and sets that tone every game.
5) Jalen is Scoochie 2.0.
6) We can win even when someone — I’m looking at you, Jordan Davis — finds himself in a slump. And that’s because we have bench power.
7) This team suddenly learned how to defend. We still slip up on switches and give perimeter shooters wide-open looks at times, but there’s definite improvement afoot. If they continue to buy in 40 minutes a game, who knows how good they can be.
8) Grant actually has some X’s and O’s floating around upstairs. His game plans in the Bahamas have been terrific. He has his guys denying entry passes, passing with passion, playing unselfish and disrupting the opposition. Good to see.
9) The chemistry is undeniable. These guys are fans of one another, and that’s going to pay dividends not just this year, but down the road.
10) We’re young but experienced, and it shows. This may still be a year of ups and downs, but it looks to me like AG really is establishing a culture here predicated on basketball IQ and athleticism. Five games in, I’m impressed — not naive, but hopeful.

Playing Virginia to within 7 is really impressive. I'm very excited. I went from half expecting an 0-fer in The Bahamas to expecting a win over Oklahoma tomorrow.
Mikesell shows up today, it's a whole different game. Gotta get more consistency out of guys that aren't Crutcher and Josh.
Toppin has been a very pleasant surprise.

Here's how important that Butler game was:
Kenpom grades games as "A" if 1) home against T25, 2) neutral against T50 or 3) road against Top 75.
Last year UD played 3 "A" games all season.
Thanks to the Butler win, UD will play 4 "A" games in a row and 5 of 6 next 6. Still plenty of chances to get quality wins in the non-conference.

Toppin was amazing in the second half today and I think he is capable of doing this consistently. He was active, played with energy, defended well and scored the ball really well, often creating his own shots against one of the best defense in the NCAA. I would like to see him get more minutes.
This team as a whole is progressing so rapidly, it’s hard to predict how far they’ll go, but at their current level, I think they will compete for a top 3 finish in the league.
BTW, we’re up to 84 in KenPom rankings.

Yeap, you got it. The first game at all the early season tropical tournaments are so very crucial. The caliber of schedule/opponent, the prime tv opportunities, and the chance to gain valuable experience playing against the nations best competition, are all positively impacted by winning game one. Scheduling is really the main reason why UD is there; so losing to Butler and then playing Middle Tennessee State, would not have been helpful. The difference is massive!

Love how many times Dakich said that Dayton had really tough, physical players. This team is getting a reputation.
Jordan Davis has had problems finding a basket in the Bahamas, but he plays very hard and very good defense. He does not let his shooting effect his defense or passing.

The defense has really improved. In the entire game without contributions from RM, JD, or JM.
Ball movement is much better also.

First defeat, but team has to be motivated to finish this trip off on a high note. Let the VA game go and tee it up to beat OK with a third game in a row playing great defense and hig-octane offense.

I do think right now Jordan and Jhery would be on our all-defensive team regardless of their lack of offensive contributions. We are developing a gritty tough for of defense.

Jordan Davis off the flashes he showed last year is capable of being an all conference caliber taletn on offense. He's got a midrange game and in my opinion is the best pure shooter on the team. (% wise he wasn't far off from Brian Roberts from 3 even hitting the freshman wall late season)
We need him making shots from the perimeter so Crutcher isn't the lone threat. This would also really help open things up for Obi and Josh

I like where this team is trending in all facets. However there are going to be much tougher moments his season where free throws wil need to be made consistently and I have no idea who on this team can do that currently. Add consistency there and this team will be as tough as it gets in the final 5 minutes of games.

1) count me as among those who thought Trey’s was a wasted ship after the ‘16-17 season. No more. He is the embodiment of the swagger this team has developed.
2) count me as among those who thought a lightly recruited red shirt big was anything but a significant piece of our future. No more. Obi’s a playa.
3) count me as among those who thought this was a throw away season before next year’s resurgence. No more. The future is now.

Jordan has been taking shots, but many of them are not even drawing iron! I concur with this defensive performance, but offensively, you cannot have a shooting guard scoring three points in two critical games, especially when you are getting zoned. I like the kid a lot, as I have conveyed on this board many times before, but his offensive performance in the Bahamas has been putrid. I would put Matos in at the two-guard. His defense is good, and at this point, has much more offense to offer than Jordan. No two ways about it...Jordan had a very disappointing two games.

The amazing thing to me about the past two games is this happening with Crutcher as essentially the only guy anyone has to respect on the perimeter
Jordan is a guy who's fully capable of shooting in the high thirty percent range from 3
Jordan Davis gets on track and Cohill/Matos give us something on offense and an A10 title is realistic

And that was the 5th game of his career against a top 5 team. Just think how he's going to look in a couple of months against A10 teams. Or heck, how he's going to look in a couple of years.

Seriously Viper? I can't relate to any of the above. In HS Trey was what he is now for UD. Look who he was playing behind in his very limited Freshman year. And Obi was a point guard growing into a center's body. And as far at this season, consider what we jettisoned from last year and we could not help but be better.

Jordan proved last year he can shoot it. Either he needs contacts, which is highly unlikely, or he needs to play and shoot his way out of it. The guy is going to be a 40+ three point shooter once he comes around. Start him or don't, but play him a bunch.
Those chanting for Matos... he is 1 for 7 on threes.

I too am concerned about the free throws. What is Crutcher's % historically?
I believe some of it may have to do with playing in a hotel banquet room. I do believe JD will shoot better as well.

There is no denying that Davis has not played well these past two games. Everyone needs to take a breath because he'll be fine. He is going to play the sixth game of his Sophomore year today. It could be the background that is messing up his shot. It could be the D that UVA played. I just know he'll play a big role on this team this year.

Agree 100%.we don't have the shooters to play slow. Drives me insane! And to top it off, JC dribbles around forever at times (not only at the end of the half), then he runs up and chucks an ill-advised shot the next trip down.
And Mikesell? He looked solid the first few games, but he better wake up fast or find a comfy seat on the sideline. His last two games have been painful. He'd be my last man in right now.

Lost in all of this today is that a man (Dakich) lost his eyesight. Still amazed that he “just didn’t see anything there” on the elbow that obviously connected to Crutcher’s chin. How many fingers am I holding up, Dan? One? That’s right. Now guess which one it is.

Fortunately, the refs got it right, as they generally seemed to do for most of the day today. Guy throws an elbow? Stripes have to call something. It wasn’t overly malicious, so they called a Flagrant 1 (which is what I said it warranted on the game thread). Dakich blew the call. Glad he wasn’t wearing the stripes today.

I think we will be alright.
Unless the wheels fall off due to (injury, discipline or chemistry issues) this team has the ability to get better. They haven't attained their peak (too early), they have been exposed to stiff competition and fared well (although there was the possibility of actually having done better!).
They will have to generate schemes to help Josh with double teams and continue to work on a rotation to keep fresh legs in the game.
It's early. They have time to develop further. They are farther along than most everyone on here thought they would be at this juncture.
Now lets go flood the Mississippi!

And Mikesell? He looked solid the first few games, but he better wake up fast or find a comfy seat on the sideline. His last two games have been painful. He'd be my last man in right now.

Mikesell ain't going anywhere..UD won't play a stud team like the last 2 they played the rest of the year..He ain't going to match up in that type of game. He's going against players 1-2" taller, 20 lbs. heavier, more athletic and much faster than he is....
UD is another BIG as in 6-7/6-8" with girth off the bench and another scorer off the bench away from being a really good BB team...
