Kostas Antetokounmpo commits!
I know it was brought up in the other thread but I thought the Greek Freak's little bro deserves his own thread!
Welcome to the Family! Can't wait to watch him this year!
Evan Daniels @EvanDaniels 46m46 minutes ago Saragossa, Spain
Archie Miller with a major coup in Kostas Antetokounmpo. Top 100 prospect. 6-10 with a massive wingspan. Athletic, mobile & major upside.
Brian Snow @BSnowScout 42m42 minutes ago
Huge get for Dayton with the commitment of 4-star forward Kostas Antetokounmpo. Major upside, younger bro of Greek Freak
Corey Evans @coreyevans_10 35m35 minutes ago Ross Township, PA
2016 Dominican forward Kostas Antetokounmpo has announced his commitment to Dayton...surprising, to say the least. Regardless, major haul
Corey Evans @coreyevans_10 35m35 minutes ago Ross Township, PA
Was talk about Kostas Antetokounmpo forgoing college and playing overseas but whichever the case, Flyer fans need to be excited

New recruits deserve their own thread...
Welcome to the flyer family. Hopefully he's as good as his brother the greek freak.
Highlights here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVI3XotSzWI
All highlight videos make a guy look good but he has some pretty good moves for someone that's 6'9-6'10

I agree. I read the original Evan Daniels tweet that said he was a 2017 recruit, but was too lazy to start a new thread after it became clear he is a 2016.
I was also too busy watching videos of him dunking on people and imagining Bucky trying to say his name.

I'm pretty sure he can't shoot. He can dunk, block shots, and looks to have pretty good handle. He played in the Nike Hoop Summit and in the Nike EYBL. Video from those games would be helpful. The videos from his high school games at Dominican might not be very valuable since he played in the next to smallest division in Wisconsin and well a lot of his opponents in those videos appear to be overmatched to say the least.

Notice the use of the left hand in some of the clips. He's not typical for his size..... and that's a good thing. I also noticed some things that display a good basketball IQ. He's lean, but that can be modified with the strength and conditioning coaches. I like what I see.

For a program that could REALLY use some good news, this is amazing! He'll definitely help with the transition from Steve.
The kid has a lot of skills for his size. How he was still available and that WE stole him is a feather in Archie's cap. I'm getting excited to watch him play from day one. Great get!!

From what I have read at a couple sites it sounded like he was looking for a college to get playing time quickly or possibly going back to Greece or someplace else overseas to play professionally. He may have just been waiting to see which option he and his family thought was best.

Someone on the A10 board suggested he isn't through the clearinghouse yet as he has transcripts/credits from Greece in addition to what he's earned in Wisconsin. If true, that would explain his not having committed anywhere up to this point. Not all conferences permit admitting a partial qualifier like Big Steve ended up being, but the A10 allows them, so that's a nice fall-back, worst case option for Kostas. Hopefully, he's cleared this year but either way, he's a great addition.

I read something similar on the Marquette boards. He didn't move to the US until midway through his sophomore year so the question is whether he has enough core credits to get through the NCAA Clearinghouse. His HS in Milwaukee is a legit high school so hopefully he was able to get all his core credits and is eligible immediately.

I totally agree we would love to have him immediately, but look at what that extra year of prep did for Big Steve. He was able to lose weight and get into great shape and made a huge impact for our squad in the too short time that he was with us. If Kostas is in the same boat he would have an entire year to learn the system and pack on some serious meat to make it on the block in the A10. However I understand that we would like him sooner than later to play with this senior class.. just saying that either way this is a huge get for us and works out well either way

I am a bit surprised there isn't more posting on this. It is pretty amazing news to get a Top 100 recruit, much less a guy that is 6'9" or 6'10". I guess it is summer and everyone is focused on Brexit. I hope he can play this coming season. Wonder if he will join team for their Europe trip.
Who are our other top 100 recruits in recent history? Brooks Hall, Chris Wright, Juwan Staten? Anyone else?

Depends on where you look, both Scooch and Kyle were around the 100-125 mark, may have made a top 100 somewhere along the line at some point. I believe Trent Mecheaum and Jimmie Binnie were in a similar boat (ironic that BRob was the best of that class, and the least heralded by recruiting services)

If Kevin Youkilis is the Greek God of Walks, then the original Greek Freak, Gianni's Antetokuonmpo is the Greek God of Positionless Basketball. If you watched the NBA Draft, it's obviously the new buzz word with Draymond Green being another poster child. I really think that's what Dayton sold Kostas on and why they were able to come out of left field on this guy. Positionless basketball is what Dayton basketball has largely been about in the last few years - think Kendall Pollard grabbing a rebound and going coast to coast.

If you have not watched the youtube of this guy, do so. He is a special talent. Still needs weight and polish, but he has all the tools: hops, handle, a shot, quickness, shot blocking, hands and vision. Based on what our staff has done with player development, I am flat out drooling!

He averaged 3.6 ppg as a junior in high school (and did not start) and now is ranked Top 100 in the country after his senior season. That's a pretty meteoric rise. Hopefully it is based on talent and potential and not on his last name.

As a Junior, he was also coming off the bench behind Diamond Stone (Maryland big, drafted early 2nd round last night) and another big that played for a P5 program, forget exactly who, so its not like he was sitting the bench in favor of johny short stacks.
Additionally, he's grown from 6'-6" to 6'-10ish in the last few seasons (similarly his brother grew from 6'-8" to 6'-11" over the course of his 1st NBA season, so perhaps their family all hit latish growth spurts) so I'd imagine that takes some time to get used to dealing w/ the additional length.
At any rate, you can clearly see the talent on film, the biggest question is how hard is he willing to work, how well is he willing to listen, how easily will he avoid the pit falls that all college freshman are faced with the first time they step away from home. The length is there, the leaping ability is there, the handle and athleticism is there, its all fairly clear even if the competition is several notches below what he'll see in college, what we can't see, and hopefully Archie has judge properly is his heart and desire. If he has even a half of Kyle Davis' heart he's going to be very good.

Really exciting, if this kid clears and can play this year the defense can reap havoc, more speed..length...add Landers and we can really get after people. Turn defense into scores.

Loved, loved, loved Steve, but his style on offense sometimes did not mesh. Super K fits our style.

He's playing against HORRIBLE competition in those videos, but, you can still see how talented he is. Most guys his height can't handle the ball with both hands in the open court and finish with both hands so smoothly. Much work to do, but, great base to build off of.
Folks, in my time watching the Flyers we could not land a 4 star recruit at center if we offered him a scholarship as he exited the womb. Archie lands one as a replacement 4 months before the season starts. Seriously, Archie, here's the blank check, fill in whatever you want.

Welcome Kostas!
I think he is a great fit, will get playing time and have a staff that will be great at helping him improve
Pretty good chance he isn't here four years but that happens...

Don't know about the competition in the video, but his HS has won a bunch of state championships and produced a good amount of high end D1 talent, so its not like he's going up against stiffs on a regular basis.

Except he is not a center. He is a SF or a stretch 4 that happens to be 6'10. From what I have seen and read, he doesn't even really play the 4.

Kostas is not going to come in and start at the 5 spot, in fact, I can't see him starting for a while if he is going to play the 5. The Flyers lack a true center on the roster, and Miller may be the best candidate at this time. It looks like we are back to playing the 5 spot by committee - probably for a while. It will be a dynamic showing, but that seems to be what has worked in the past.
I think Kostas may be a better outside shooter than we think, but he will need to beef up a bit for Div 1 ball. I noticed in the video that he seems to look for a shot, draws coverage, and then heads to basket. If left open, he took the shot. I think he is going to be exciting to watch.

Something I noticed that I really liked was his ability to avoid contact while staying strong and finishing around smaller defenders. Hopefully with time in the Strength and conditioning program he can add finishing through contact as well. A10 bigs will not let him get through that easily.

Kostas says in a youtube interview that he plays the 1-3 and maybe the 4 sometimes. Also, this video with his brother's is interesting, sorry if it has been posted previously:

depending on where he stands, as seen far too often, UD may have played games that count prior to knowing if he's cleared the clearinghouse. Of course, I've seen nothing concrete on the clearinghouse issues, just guesses on the reasons he had fewer high end offers for a top 100 recruit.

Comparing him to Kevin Durant is likely placing expectations far too high. However, he has a very similar body build to Durant at the same age. We could only be so lucky if he turns out to be half the player that Durant was/is.

I don't care what position he plays, I saw a player with NBA potential. He can move, dribble and finish. If he has heart and desire, he can be a special player. We usually don't get these kinds of players; tip of hat to coaching staff.

The open position is Pierre's. Super K and Cunningham will compete for it and probably share it. Both should be in the nine or ten man rotation.

For instance, it has been said if a guy can handle the rock he's a point guard or a "1". Or if the guy is really tall he's a center or a "5" and if he' strong and can run the floor and rebound well he's a "4". It was all made up for the casual fan and to simplify the sport for the casual fan. Go to any park (yes I'm old school as in outdoors hoops) or gym and tell me who is playing as a 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. A basketball player is as basketball player regardless of position. Today so-called guards are getting as many rebounds as supposed forwards and said centers and forwards/centers are getting more assists and hitting more threes than point and shooting guards. It comes down to skills, strength, desire and somewhat athleticism. So give me five basketball players regardless of position and let's go.

I believe the reason to name the 1-5 is so that when the coach draws up a play in practice everyone knows their job based on who's on the court.

Wow, Archie and his staff pull off another coup! This was one of the most brilliant things that Archie has done here. How does he do this? Archie is so special - top 5 coach in the country, hands-down. We obviously had a void with the tragic loss of Big Steve, and Archie responds with Big K! I can't wait to see this young man on the court.

agreed to the staff i say
WE ARE NOT WORTHY, WE ARE NOT WORTHY.
I looked for a bowing icon but couldn't find it
I should add that I have always felt that the game atmosphere was UD's biggest selling point, guess I was wrong.

It has been noted that Tom Ostrom was the key recruiter on Kostas. This staff does an amazing job of identifying talent and then successfully recruiting. Well done.

The kid isn't even on campus and we have 3 priders worried he's going to leave early for the NBA.
Let's not turn this kid into Josh Benson...let him play without hype and/or unrealistic expectations. Nothing good comes from fantasy and speculation.

It's kind of hard to discuss the player without mentioning his brothers who have played in the NBA, but I don't see a single post - let alone three - suggesting Kostas would leave early for the NBA. Who said that? Maybe I missed it.

is he going to be able to go to Spain w/ the team? I thought I read he was over in Greece playing on their U-19 team this summer and isn't enrolled for the 2nd summer session, which seems like it would kill the chance to play with the team in Spain. Though perhaps he could travel on his own dime with the team and join them for practices.

I do not think that he would be able to participate with the team at all until he is officially enrolled in school. Plus, a majority of the permitted practices will take place before the trip, so he would have a very small amount of time on the floor with the team in Spain.

I like how close AM keeps his recruiting. It seems like his team does a great job with under the radar guys that have upside. I'm sure getting the approval of the NCAA was seen as a drawback that kept other programs away. The tape in my opinion is inconclusive it's not like he was going againt other 4-5 Star recruits. I trust that he has been vetted pretty well. Playing against Pollard will help the learning curve. It also will help Cunningham in his development. AM is also starting to embrace Twitter more and more.

Let's not turn this kid into Josh Benson...let him play without hype and/or unrealistic expectations. Nothing good comes from fantasy and speculation.

Well, you got me on two posts insinuating early entry to the NBA. Missed those. But none of the others suggest that at all. History has proven it is a very long shot for any UD player to be drafted, let alone early, but the name on the back of his jersey (if they can get it all to fit!) probably gives him a bit of an advantage in that regard if he manages to show signs of being the player his brother Giannis has become.

If sober, it's something like AHN-TAY-TOE-COON-POE.
After you've had a few too many, it tends to sound a bit like AAAAN-TEE-TACO-(BURP)-OOOMPA-LOOMPA-(BURP).

"As a senior, Antetokounmpo averaged 12.9 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.4 blocks a game as Dominican's retooled squad went 27-1. He also shot .639 (147-230) from the field and .545 (55-101) from the line."
Sidenote: I find it a bit odd that his god-awful free shooting stats were included. It's almost as if the author thought that was impressive! Which begs the question - who wrote this - Kendall Pollard?!

I joke with the people in my section that Baby D wears the number 1 because he's so thin no other number would fit. Is there any number skinnier to fit on Kostas uni? I just checked the roster, not added yet, curious as to what number he will be.

Okay, fine. But when you need a handy-dandy, drunken, ready-to-slur version, you know where to look, right? Hint: it's not DaytonFlyers.com!

Um. Did you really just ask if there was a number that was skinnier than the number 1?
Also, you've seen the name that has to go on the back of that jersey, right?

Here is the pronunciation straight from his brother.
And a whole lot of mispronunciations from Bucks fans.

They don't add anyone to the roster until they are actually enrolled, on campus and classes for that semester/summer session have begun. Trey Landers was just added the other day because he has officially enrolled and started classes for the 2nd summer session.

The fact that your grandma wants the ding dong all day long is a bit of an overshare, drunk or not.
