The university and athletic department got ahead of the curve. Now the pre trial or trial comes in a couple weeks, what ever happens then will determine more that could come down on Sam

Nevermind, I'm out!

My guess is the ship will stay open. I don't see AG committing the ship to a multi-year guy at this point. And the rest of the grad transfers are probably looking for a place they can contribute more than they can here. A couple of them would have a chance at it, but I'm guessing it stays open.

If team fills his open spot immediately, then my advise might be, stay at UD, complete year of school, get your life in order, try and keep in shape and work on transfer to another basketball program elsewhere.

However, staying in school and on campus might be too embarrassing and humiliating. Then maybe it would be better to pull up stakes, get life in order for a year, stay in shape and try elsewhere. I wish him well but it is a tough road ahead at his age.

Kids just don't understand how, one event, whether positive or negative, can affect your whole life and the life of others forever. Having raised three kids, I have tried to explain that. So far so good, reasonably speaking.
I think it means Sam is kicked out of school for one semester and is off the team for one year. So he could start classes on his dime after Christmas. When he can play or practice is not explained, but implies next August.

If he sucks it up and pays his own way next semester, practices with the team and grows up a ton I am willing to give him a second chance.

He cannot walk-on after being a scholarship player.

Basketball wise he is gone for a year at UD. With the video's out there I don't other schools will come calling.

His parents are quite wealthy so he can pay for school and rehab.

When Louisville won the national championship they asked two ship players to go walk on status so they could give ships to two recruits.

I'm extremely pleased with the (in effect) one season suspension. I think it's in Sam's best interest to get a fresh start and would be shocked to see him on the team again. I've now moved on into receruitment mode with this new found 'ship.

CAG has impressed me with the way he's handled this so far, and for that matter his overall start with the role.

I would think Coach Grant would be pinching himself right now to see if he might be dreaming. Feel certain he would have been "all in" as far as trying to develop a man-child "project" entering his Junior year. But ecstatic that the basketball gods have smoothed out an obvious challenge and replaced it with an unexpected opportunity.

Movin' on.

I don't get why so many of you are so convinced Sam and UD will part ways? No reason that he can not quietly serve out his punishment and return to UD in January. And it is not out of the realm of possibility that with good work ethic and improvement, that he could be accepted back into the coaches (and teams) good graces and play ball again next year.....
I'd like to think that UD is a pretty forgiving place for those who show they realize they messed up and have made appropriate changes to see to it that they have changed....
And in that year off, he could totally change his physical condition to become a force......

It's actually pretty easy to get. Most on the board don't want him back. This just provides a legitimate reason to make it happen.

I'm not sure it has anything to do with forgiveness. I don't see why anyone would not forgive the kid. However, I think in the minds of many forgiveness and wanting him on the team are not necessarily aligned. Further, I think your breaking with the opinion of many has a great deal to do with Miller's perceived upside potential.

... and to add my perspective, the behavior I saw on the videos goes beyond the mischievous drinking of a teenager. IMHO only- Sam's got serious behavioral & addiction issues, and needs to take life altering measures. Returning to UD makes no sense to me (from his perspective) and is an unnecessary risk...and I'm not even aware of the specifics of his prior immature behavior some allude to on this Board that apparently had him on Archie's super secret double probation.

Again IMHO-the general public does not appreciate the challenges Sam is now going thru with what I can only imagine are serious issues.

Now add to this his underwhelming play, and the fact that I cannot erase from my mind that video of him (CBS?) at the X preseason game a couple years ago on the bench looking like a shell shocked victim of child abuse- OK that's my problem and I get that...

Don't assume that. I suspect that there are more UD Fans that want him back as soon as he has received his "punishment" for his embarrassing and illegal activities.

IMO he is a significant asset to the team. I don't want to go into my opinion because it could create further bashing.

Give the guy a break! Let's not pile on, he is paying handsomely for his stupid actions both now and in the near future.

I hope I never get to a point that I tell someone who has fought a disease how they are permitted to joke about it. Despite what the internet has taught us, sometimes the best response to not liking something is to keep your opinion to yourself.

I don't presume to speak for all UD Fans. However, the board seems to be leaning toward not being in his corner as far as returning. I personally wouldn't be completely against him being in uniform after a year off if AG determines that is what he wants. I'm not in the locker room. If Sam is a great teammate then I'm all in on keeping him.

However however... I would rather replace him with a player with more upside. Whereas I don't want us to become a program that kicks kids to the curb every year, he put himself in this position. He embarrassed himself and the University. The reality of it is your standing with the team (or your company for those of us that have already graduated) has an impact on how much leash you get. Whether he comes back or not, I hope he gets his act together. And if I'm perceived as a bad person for being ok with recruiting over a kid on suspension, I'm ok with the perception.

Those who are fighting cancer on a daily basis like Rollo earn the right to dilute the pain and trials any way they want for my money. If someone who doesn't know the pain of chemo and makes sport with that analogy about Miller, we would be all over them like white on rice.

Read this sarcastic comment in front of my wife and others in the same unfortunate condition..................see what they think.......we (especially her) understand the pain.............this humor is not appreciated regardless of the author and their unfortunate situation.

Misplaced humor like this doesn't belong on a Flyer forum.

Thank God there weren't cell phones and security cameras everywhere during my 4 years at UD. I never did anything like push a female bartender or pee in a jail but there were plenty of embarrassing moments that could have been used to determine whether or not I had a "problem." Good luck to Sam over the next year.

Sam can, and IMO likely will, rehab himself, video or no video. And that is a good thing. Some smaller school will accept him after he's taken a year off and gotten his life together.

Those of you preaching forgiveness seem to misunderstand the word in the Christian sense. When the church Treasurer steals money from the offering plate and repents you forgive. What you are not called to do is to ignore what happened. You don't leave that person in charge of the money. So I trust the university will do nothing vindictive or mean spirited, as a matter of fact I expect they'll bend over backward to help him get his credits transferred elsewhere when he's ready. Just not at UD.

I would personally love to have Sam back on the team for his basketball skill, and was always a big Sam supporter. It's a shame, it's not happening. So this has nothing to do with the quality of his actual or perceived skill on the court. This is about doing the right thing.

RELAX

We don't know all the details of what went on with Sam before this incident and we sure don't know how he will handle things now. I trust the coaches and administrators to make the right decisions.

While you are right, I would bet that most would have adjusted their behavior knowing that atmosphere existed.

Sam is and has been living in this atmosphere most of his life, it's not like cameras everywhere and Internet just sprung up over night.

Misplaced humor like this doesn't belong on a Flyer forum.
Your friends or anyone else who has gone through the fight has every right to feel how they want about Rollo's comment, (I will point out that they never would have known about it and thus not suffered whatever anger or frustration they suffered if you had not felt the need to conduct an unscientific survey on the matter). However, it is that exact same principal that gives Rollo the right to deal with his fight however he sees fit and the responses, I think, were meant as support for a fellow Flyer and Prider not as some indication that we think there is something funny about chemotherapy or cancer. I certainly don't think that.

If offended you, and anyone else, has the right to stop reading, make a comment expressing your displeasure, (which you did), start cheering for Xavier or whatever. I will respectfully suggest that what you don't have the right to do is tell Rollo or anyone else, what they can, can't, should or shouldn't post by way of suggesting what belongs on this board and what does not.

America is a wonderful place and freedom is perhaps the most wonderful of things but it does require that we endure opinions and statements we might not agree with from time to time rather than taking up the cause on behalf of everyone who might be offended by said comments, even when they aren't aware of them. I expect you won't agree with my statements and opinions and that is fine. I just ask that you refrain from telling me or suggesting to me that I should not be able to express them.

I'm sensing microagressions. People are getting their feelings hurt, so you must stop what you're doing.

Maybe it's just me but it's darn near impossible to offend me. I may disagree, I might think you're a horse's arse, but I just don't possess the gene for being offended.

To me it's akin to pouting. We should all grow out of it by age 12 and learn to see what's behind the offense. It's usually the other person trying to get a rise out of me and when it's not it's usually the other person being a fool. And then there's the times I'm being a fool. But where do feelings come into the discussion?!?!

It's a generational thing. New hires in our office say 'screw seniority' and fight for the same things people with 20+ years of experience have earned. They don't care and only want equal XXX for equal work.

A doctor friend of mine has the same issue in his Dayton office. New cardiologists demanding equal pay and equal benefits to those who have paid their dues and earned their benefits.

Spoiled brats. Entitled brats. I propose we give them a trophy every day they're on time and hope it shuts them up.

In this thread, it appears that we have done everything we can to hurt Sam. When I reread our postings, we have piled on and further hurt Sam (above what the legal, media and UD policies will accomplish). He has been made fun of, embarrassed, discredited, emasculated, offered counseling, categorized him as spoiled and privileged, suggested his course of professional counseling, offered our interpretation of the legal situation, offered UD management a suggestion that they use this indiscretion as an opportunity to strengthen the basketball program and more. We have permanently etched this on the internet.

There is indeed an opportunity to create anger when adult men and women (under the cloak of secrecy) choose to belittle a student for his immature and illegal behavior. He is most assuredly paying the price for his indiscretions. Let's leave it there.

I am embarrassed by our group's actions and hope that we learn from this and do better in the future. I include myself in the group.

All of these disappointments are a learning experience. Let's do our best to support our UD students.

BTW - this is what most people would refer to as lecturing.

Go Flyers!

That Caddy's Tap House appears to be a very nice peaceful place. Perhaps Miller is a perp and victim.

Sam pled guilty to a lesser charge of disorderly conduct and therefore avoids further jail time. Here's hoping that he (and everyone involved) can start to move forward from here. I wish him well in his future endeavors.

The argument can be made by the defense that they had no business putting him in a shared cell at that point in time knowing his state of mind. It won't go that far. This isn't the most serious of crimes. It probably happens multi times an evening, maybe not the exact actions, but some variation of them.

The criminal charges are the easy part. What the University will do and the humiliation of having these videos easily accessed by the public will be the real price he pays. Does he have the intestinal fortitude to take the time to go through the humiliation and embarrassment from the community and humbling himself and staying at UD(which if he does, I'm guessing they would take him back after some sort of suspension or one year expulsion) will be the real question.

Just hoping the best for you Sam. Have been in recovery for quite some time. Many years ago at an AA meeting an "old timer" said the following, "Every time I drank I did'nt get in trouble but every time I got in trouble I had been drinking." Seriously hope the best for you and hope to to see you back as a Flyer! God Bless.
