I'm going to agree with you. And, give some players, young players, a lot of credit on some big plays!

Sort of like his first mentor, Don Donoher. Coach only played guys if they were “getting it” in practice and could make a positive impact on the court. A scholarship gained you nothing. Coach Grant did the same tonight. If you contributed, you played.
Nice game, Flyers!

Huge step forward tonight. That first half was the best half of defense all year. Second half was not as good, but we still denied the dribble drive and easy shots. AG is getting through to the guys, as techniques and help side were much better tonight. Our man was so good that we rarely played zone.
AG seems to have made some progress with X Williams. Besides his two "what the heck" turnovers, he played solid on both ends with 5 points, 4 rebounds in 14 minutes, and made his only three.
The team has a ways to go on their half court offense against the zone.

Made a great decision late to put Cunningham on Peyton. Think it surprised them. At least it stopped the easy post ups. Some of his other strategy seemed perplexing. Why didn't we bring help against PA when he was working fine low? Wonder why he didn't foul very late when we had fouls to give? Why wasn't DD set up to receive the ball when we knew they had to foul?

I noticed that change as well...and after that I don't think he score anymore from the inside. Peyton is a good player, but he needed a bigger and stronger player on him.

DD was set up to receive the ball at the end of the game. Davidson double teamed him and then fouled as he broke for the ball. He never got the ball because of the foul. Not a smart foul by Davidson.

And, he generally played solid defense against Aldridge. A couple of lapses, sure, but generally prevented him from going off. True, Trey’s a JYD, but he was giving up 3-4 inches. We needed someone with more length to combat their greatest weapon (a stretch 4). X provided what we needed tonight.
I’ve been pretty hard on X for awhile now, but tonight he did what we needed him to do. Good job, Sir!

I think he was attempting to protect Josh from getting into foul trouble. Also thought TL did a hellova job because PA would get points no matter who was guarding him. And the late change did surprise coach Mckilllum.

Good thing Svoboda didn’t play, i’m sure it would have resulted in a 1 point loss. Good thing for AG also, maybe we won’t have to “suck” for the next 2-3 years after all.

I've maintained all season that this is the one trait AG has compared to DD. He'll ride 5/6 guys if that is where the production is coming from. It can work as long as the players are conditioned to play long stretches. Also, compared to DD's era, the media timeouts are a big contributor. All of this combined with Davidson not being an up tempo team, enabled AG to ride the starting 5 + XW last night.

To be competitive next season, and I'm already on record saying I believe we're NCAAT bound, Kostas has to be effective. And while I know that 'you play to win the game', this season is - baring miraculous improvement in all aspect of the game - all but lost with respect to the NCAAs.
Therefore, Kostas has got to get serious playing time! Practice, in theory, makes perfect...I get it. But games expose strengths and weaknesses, allow for better development, build confidence and force you improve. And Kostas must. get. better. NOW!

Totally agree. But the desire and effort to get. better. NOW! must come from Kostas.
Of course we don't see practices, but that desire and effort aren't always evident come game time.

Yep. After the way-too-easy hoop he scored on Landers late with nobody sagging down to help, Cunningham was able to keep Peyton farther away from the bucket and lean on him.

I think they cleared out to allow Aldridge to go 1v1 but just when he was going to make his move, they brought their big guy down low. If the double team came there, Aldridge would have dumped it to the big man.

Kostas needs three things to develop his game.
First and biggest is the weight room. Strength is critical when you play in the post and inside the arc. Kostas can't be a Luke Fabrizius player. Right now, he can't post up properly. Defenders push him out of the box. Players his height need to post a few feet away from the basket. He can't do that right now. When does get the ball in the semi low block, he is not strong enough to ward off the defender.
Next, he needs to develop his feet. On defense, his movements are a step slow. Very slow. Notice that the team plays zone almost exclusively when he is in the game. He is a sever man to man defensive liability. UD played man to man almost the entire second half and Kostas was not in the game.
Finally, he needs to improve his shot and ball handling. I always like Archie's development system in which players shot thousands of shots, every day and they were all tracked and counted. That really improves your shooting percentage.
You can play Kostas a lot more this year, but it will cause you to lose games. Odds are if Kostas played in the second half, UD would have lost the game.
The "See I told you so" fans are not willing to accept losses this year in exchange for future development. The team would be below 10-10 if Kostas had been playing more. They will lose more games if he plays more down the stretch. Tough call to make.
You can see that Anthony shortened his bench. No Svoboda last night, No Kostas in the second half and very limited Crosby.

Don't forget Cunningham had to guard their 6'11" big, Magarity. If Cunningham was switched to Aldridge, then that left Landers defending an even bigger guy who would post him up. Grant played it perfectly. He waited till crunch time, when the Davidson players were looking for Aldridge. The Davidson coach did not recognize that he should have called time out, and isolated a post up with Magarity, instead of Aldridge. Great coaching by AG!

I rarely criticize players or coaches. The end of the game where we could have LOST on a half court shot is bad coaching.
We had 2 FOULS to give with a 4 point lead with 5 seconds to go!
I headed to the car at that point. got to the car and hear we are up 1 with DD at the line.
Ok if he misses we foul who gets the rebound. Never should have had a chance to lose.
The man to man defense and other coaching moves were good to see, but this end of game errors is on the coaches.

Often coaches tell players to execute something at end of game and the players don't execute. I've seen that way too much. You don't practice fouling while ahead often.
It is unnatural to foul on purpose, but I was hoping they could have burned those fouls. On the three point shot, a foul could have turned it into a 4 point play. It is sometimes easier to execute that strategy from the stands.

Nothing wrong with what transpired, imo. DD is almost a 90% plus FT shooter so he needs to hit them. If UD tries to foul on the Davidson inbound pass, up 4 with 5 seconds to go, and get over there too late to guard (which is exactly what happen with Landers sprinting out to guard the guy that hit the 3 in the corner) you give them an opportunity for a 4 point play especially that close to the basket. In fact, when Landers sprinted out towards him in the corner I was cringing. UD is a terrible overall man-to-man defensive team, have proved it all year, and it's very easy to lose a guy which is exactly what happen there...
As far as DD and what happened on the missed front end of the one-and-one, I see what you're saying but what if a UD player (I believe they only had a couple guys lined up at the FT line anyways) commits to close of an "intentional foul" with a grab and gets called for it? Who knows with these refs. UD was more worried about getting their defenders back to defend a last second shot. I do think UD defended that last shot perfectly and did not allow that ball-handler to just sprint up the court. They made him go far to his left..

Unbelievable, we win and AG outcoaches a veteran coach who has been at Davidson forever, and someone complains we could have won better. We beat Davidson, who on paper is better than us, had just won four in a row, and is a terrible defensive matchup for us. Grant gets his guys to finally play some decent man defense, and to get our guys to pass the ball inside the most of any game this season. However, lets not celebrate because I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express, and think we should have done something different, and won better.

Exactly! This is the ‘What About Bob’ season. It’s all about baby steps. If you are thinking some switch is going to get flipped and this team is going to become a top 25 caliber team this season then, as Brooks Hall said about Crosby and those expecting some similar miraculous improvement to occur in his game, ‘You just aren’t paying attention’
I applaud the progress I saw last night. While it was minimal, for this team it was large. Hopefully another large baby step can be taken on Sat. Learn to adapt your expectations to reality and you can actually enjoy this season’s ride. Crutcher is maturing into a very nice player right in front of our eyes.

When he was hired, Anthony Grant was the obvious choice for a lot of reasons:
1. Losing Archie stung...a lot. Anthony probably would never use UD as a stepping stone. He is one of us, he's not going leave us.
2. He was a fairly successful college basketball coach, doing very well at VCU and alright at Alabama. He had the credentials.
3. He has no regulatory issues. He's probably as clean as they come.
4. He brought the cache of the NBA, Billy Donovan and the Thunder. There is something to be said for that - in terms of knowledge and recruiting.
All of that being said, the way they are playing right now does not pass the eye test. I go to every game and I watch intently. Been a season ticket holder since the mid 90s. Something is missing that the last three coaches I thought generally brought - a toughness and grittiness. Rebounding and defense. I feel this team is soft mentally and physically. The problem is I don't know if it is a function of Coach Grant, the players or both. Kostos and Xeyrius are very very soft. Heck, outside of Trey and Josh and maybe Jalen, they all seem softish. I don't know, I hate to be hard on the players, I do. I am very willing to give the coach a year, this was probably a very difficult situation he was thrust into. I want Coach Grant to be very successful and I pray he will.
But the cold reality is that Dayton has every advantage in the A-10 and we should never be in a situation like this, never. Something has to change. It is not working.

Well, I am very heartened by the defense that was played last night - The Flyers showed that grit and determination that we have grown to expect. Some nights we shoot well, some nights we don't. Defense travels. Defense is the equalizer. I much prefer the man to man defense that was played last night.
My biggest concern coming from last night is the last second desperation shots due to the slowness the team shows getting into the offense. It seems that most of the teams we play recognize this - and they put on a token full court press just to kill some seconds in bringing the ball up. Then we get into the office, make a few passes, then on cue, the students start counting down from 10, then we heave a desperation shot. Hopefully this gets rectified.

Not only that, but we are shooting a very good 48% from the field which is 39th best in the country. We must be doing something right offensively to get that many good shots.

Yeah, but if Davidson’s last-second half-court desperation shot had gone in, the title of this thread would have been: “See, I told you AG cannot coach!”
LOL

Jordan and Jalen I don't think it's fair categorize them as soft yet. Those two desperately need a production off-season in the weight room

Yeah, the real question is do the Grant doubters still already want him fired and still think he can't coach?
If the answer is yes, this is nothing more than patting themselves on the back for saying something nice they don't really mean anyway.
