Northern Illinois Game Thread
I am as upset as the next person about what happened tonight, but this team can't dwell on it... They need to forget about it and go out and play 40 min Saturday night.
Northern Illinois projected lineup:
G Daveon Balls 6’0” 165 FR Indianapolis, Indiana
G Akeem Springs 6’3” 208 FR Waukegan, Illinois
F Aksel Bolin 6’7” 220 JR Asker, Norway
F Keith Gray 6’8” 225 SO Chicago, Illinois
F Kevin Gray 6’8” 225 SO Chicago, Illinois
Still a LONG way to go in this season, I will definitely keep the faith and most of you should too... Go Flyers!

I'll be on the house tonight at the Arena. It figures--I wanted to check out the new intro music and they are gonna change it again for the Miami game

Talked to Mark Montgomery's wife before the game. She said Mark new that NIU was a major re-building project. Hopefully the administration gives him enuf time to bring in his type of player and succeed. It's not gonna happen overnite.

NIU is the worst team I've seen that's not in a CYO league. This game should be over already.

I am also watching the Wittenberg/Wooster game via the internet and the picture of the D3 game is 5 times better than the feed we get from WHIO. Unfortunately Wittenberg is getting handled right now.

Nice to see a 3 from Price and Derenbecker.
We have failed to see 3 wide open Flyers in the lane. Not looking.

If this keeps up for another 7:40 NIU will score only 2 points in a half.

Disappointing we have no inside out game at all at this point in ooc. It's not clear how we are attacking offensively. What's the scheme, coach?
I'm not concerned about what NIU can't do. But real concerned about we are not doing.

worst opponent i've seen in some time.
Just the kinda beatdown team we need to puff ourselves up and build confidence.
24-2 . goal now is to get Khari, Scott and Derenbecker some minutes.
and see if Gavs can play some

We might be seeing a record being set for the least amount of points scored in a half by one team. Re: Coach Majerus.........too young. God Bless.

Okay - I'm feeling bad, but I'd also like Dayton to break a record. I hope they hold NIU to a record low number of points.

Dillard not playing well, from 8 minutes i've seen.
Derenbecker looking ok. And key for Flyers is moving ball around well against the zone!

Interesting that their coach, Montgomery coached at MSU with Gregory and is clueless about offense, but they play some decent defense.

Hartsock is talking like Dayton is have a whale of a game. If NIU had an offense we'd be in trouble again.
This men's team is getting more and more difficult to watch.

Back in the day of no shot clock there were some low scores. This could be a record since the shot clock.

Anyone remember the Richmond game when UD was up like 30-0 and everyone including the Dayton fans were pulling for Richmond to score. Don't remember the halftime score but it was uglier than this one. At least Dayton had an offense that night.

According to this link, the record for a game is 6 points, so we'd need a shutout for another 20 minutes to break that record:
http://www.wildcatworld.com/?page_id=203
It happened twice - 1945 and 1973. Not sure when the shot clock was introduced.

Someting wrong with that. If Duke was up 31-4 at half and lost 49-33 then fewest points in a half is 2, by Duke, in the second half of that game.

I remember that game well. I think Richmond had something like 11 at the half. I also the Miami game where Miami also had a ridiculous score at the half.

Found the real source...
http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/m_bask...RB/2011/D1.pdf
We broke the record for fewest points allowed in the first half since 1986.
But we also nearly broke the record for fewest points (both teams) in a half.
Relevant records:
Fewest in first half since 1986: 6 (now 5)
Fewest in a half: 4
Fewest in a game since 1986: 20
Longest time scoreless since 1986: 16:08. Not sure if we broke this one or not.

And the next time Jalen Robinson gets in a defensive stance might be the first. Standun straight up flatfooted.

If we can hold them under 13.3% shooting, we break that record... and expunge our own shameful name from the record books.
Lowest Field-Goal Percentage (Since 1986)
13.3%—Dayton vs. Miami (OH) (8 of 60), Dec. 29, 2001

Per the UD media guide
Fewest points scored by an opponent in a half:
- 8 by Miami (OH) 29 Dec 01
- 8 by Richmond 20 Jan 07
- 10 by Roanoke 9 Jan 78
Fewest points scored by an opponent in a game:
- 22 by Roanoke 9 Jan 78
- 23 by Miami (OH) 29 Dec 01
- 32 by NC State 28 Dec 59
The first half officially set a record for fewest points by an opponent. Also second fewest points scored in a half by both teams (Miami-UD combined for 28 on 29 Dec 01).
Records aside, we look like crap against a more crappy team.

wtf
The refs won't let anybody harrass on defense shoulder to shoulder. Price and Dillard don't seem to have that down.

i like when Dill and Khari are in together. Gives chance for Dillard to shoot from outside and handle the ball less.
Khari gets the three ball in return. Khari is gonna be good for us,not just based on this set of plays.
About 5 minutes, I expect to see Derenbecker in. And taking a couple of threes soon. I think we are developing good rotations, and are outside shooting cna be good enuf.
If Oliver can hit a couple a game, Derenbecker 2-3 a game, then we get action from Vee/Khari/Dillard who's to say our outside game won't serve us. The issue is becoming more inside game, any consistency with it.

Wasn't there speculation that Montgomery was going to take over the reins at MSU instead of Gregory when Izzo was supposed to be going to the Cavaliers?

You might be a minority of one who thinks UD plays strong/tough inside. Everything is avoid contact. If UD posts up at 5 feet against Alabama they will their butt 14 feet from the hoop.

What the heck is stronfbimside? We are missing Kav, so a little softness inside can be expected. If you can complain about UD's play tonight you can probably complain about anything. Take a game like this every game for the remainder of the season.

Play exactly like this the rest of the year and UD won't win 12 games. The opponent has more to do with this than does the quality of UD play.

Uh - most teams we play are MUCH better than UNI. Do you really think if UD was playing VCU right now that VCU would have 22 points? What you are seeing is almost entirely attributable to how god awful NIU is. They would not win 10 games in d2.

Case in point. Dillard gets a 10 call with no real pressure. That is JOB bad. And the officials missed one on Sanford in the first half.

We play like this and we won't be .500 in conference. In fact if we play like we have all season .500 will be a stretch. I know we are young, and or inexperienced but I expected a bit more than we have shown so far this year. Same conditions don't seem to be affecting the women.

no, only for your criticalness apparently and two or three others on the board tonight.
there are several good points about this game for some Flyer players. After two bad games, you wnat players building up their skills, their shot selection and shot "confidence", and many other skills.
I'm not really sure you play or played much Rollo. Like your opinions sometime, but your an armchair critic. That's fine, but there is lots of good coming out of this game.
Def not all good, and Dillard and Robinson, and Pierre didn't have good games. Other players did however.

This team loses by at least 20 to Alabama--and the only reason it won't be more is that Anthony Grant won't want to embarass his alma mater.

Def some poor turnovers in second half Emmet, and some poor passes by Dillard and some others.
HOwever we have a few debbie downers on the board tonight Emmet.
Very good dribbling and timing of passes on our offensive movement. Case in point, great pass by Oliver and footwork by Robinson. Nice moves by both!
but hey, the opponent sucks right? must not count for shi"te according to some of these posters

While these guys are unskilled, they fight hard for every loose ball and rebound. So they get to fling up another shot. Tonight their ragged play invited us to reciprocate, and we fell for it.

86 I am not sure who gets confidence from this. Maybe Price generally taking care of the ball and knocking down a couple triples. Oliver hit a couple shots Pierre had a bad game. So did Dillard. Robinson and Scott need confidence against a physical opponent. Not this.
