Saint Louis Game Thread
Arch Baron Cup 2018 Part 1, let's get it! Go win a road game against an improved Billiken squad.
Game is on Saturday at 4 PM and will be shown on the CBS Sports Network.
Starting Lineup:
G 0 Jordan Goodwin 6’3” 215 FR Centreville, IL
G 5 Davell Roby 6’4” 200 SR Memphis, TN
F 3 Javon Bess 6’6” 220 RS JR Columbus, OH
F 22 Hasahn French 6’7” 235 FR Middletown, NY
F 1 D.J. Foreman 6’8” 240 RS JR Spring Valley, NY
Former Dayton Recruiting Target and MSU Spartan Javon Bess leads the way at 13.1 PPG and 6.7 RPG. Top 50 HS PG Jordan Goodwin has been really good, will be on the all-rookie team, 11.5 PPG 7.6 RPG 4.2 APG.
I know this could be a jinx but they are an AWFUL shooting team... 66.5 PPG 42.1 FG% 30.2 3PT% 66.4 FT%.
Get it done at Chaifetz... Go UD!

I watched most of the game last night. After blowing out VCU early, and leading the whole game, StL lets VCU tie it and win in OT. They look like UD at times, do some good things and some very bad things.
STL has some very muscular physical guys and they crash the boards. They beat VCU 48-31 on the boards. Not great shooters, but they have some guys, like Bess who can put it in the basket. They have little bench, as no one scored last night outside of the starting five.
We must play as good as last night to win this one on the road.

Is SLU still sitting their suspended players? They have a bit of a Pierre situation on their hands (I haven't read much about, so I don't know how it compares exactly, just the feeling I got from reading their board a few weeks back) but involving 3(?) players. The university hasn't let them play yet this season (as of a few weeks ago, don't know about the last week +) and is being very hush hush, other than to mention the title IX situation. As such, they've been very limited on depth all season long.

Police are still investigating, so charges could come. Unlike UD situation where there were no charges title IX took over, at SLU title IX is sitting waiting out to see if there are any charges then they will take over. The headach for SLU isn't over by a long shot....they still have to wait to see what steps title IX will take.
What fans don't understand its different for private schools vs state schools where they don't depend on fed money all that much.

Did you read any of the articles from the St Louis paper Avid?
Because you're statements are misrepresenting the situation. SLU's title IX office isn't waiting on anything. They have issued rulings which are now being appealed.
This is an excerpt from one of the articles that was dated Jan 20th 2018.
http://www.stltoday.com/sports/colle...2c08e6789.html
" A lawyer representing three of the four St. Louis University basketball players involved in a campus and ongoing criminal investigation says his clients have been suspended from school.
Attorney Scott Rosenblum said Friday that his clients, whom he declined to identify, had been suspended for 18 months to two years. The fourth player, whom he does not represent, was expelled, Rosenblum said.
Lawyer John Rogers, who represents the fourth player, said in a text message: “Rosenblum has no 1st hand knowledge of what sanctions my client has received.” He declined to comment further.
St. Louis University said in a statement Friday morning that parties in the school’s Title IX investigation had been informed of the findings and decisions made by the hearing officer regarding allegations of sexual assault from September. The initial report indicated that three women had alleged an assault by four players.
Both sides have the option to appeal. They have three business days to respond"
It's pretty clear that university title IX office has issued a ruling and that the appeals process is probably occurring right now.
As for the police it appears the investigation is still going on according to the article:
" St. Louis police said Friday that there were no updates in the continuing criminal investigation related to the incident."

C time reason it's different is that the alleged culprits are still attending classes unlike Pierre, they travel with the team etc. Pierre challenged title IX ruling with no police charges but had to stay off campus.
Whole situation at SLU is being handled differently.
Yes police investigation is ongoing.
BTW this is a far more serious event as there are videos etc. not just a he said she said.

Another intestine point, the alleged victims are cheer leaders, so the alleged culprits are in close proximity to one another.

I'm not comparing it to the Pierre situation or offering any judgement on the whole situation. I'm just fact checking you because what you typed was incorrect.
You said "at SLU title IX is sitting waiting out to see if there are any charges then they will take over."
How can you say that when the St. Louis Post dispatch got this statement from the university:
SLU’s statement reads: “Saint Louis University has followed its Title IX process throughout this investigation. At this time, the Hearing Officer’s findings and decisions have been communicated individually to each of the parties. However, the Title IX process is not complete. Each of the parties has the right to appeal the decision(s) of the Hearing Officer. The University will have no additional comment at this time.”
How in anyway does that say SLU is waiting out to see if there are any charges? Sounds to me like they investigated, had hearings, issued punishments, and they are now in the appeals process. In no way is that waiting to see if they are charged criminally.

You said it yourself posting what SLU said, title IX is not finished or completed. One of my SLU friends wife works at the admin office and she said a lot will depend on the police investigation. Once that is complete Title XI will react. Right now the decision has been appealed allowing all parties to remain in classes and on campus.
Only drawback is the players are not allowed to play. Kinda weird to me. Can't play but can stay in class and on campus. So in my opinion based on my friends wife the shoe has not dropped yet.
All my friends and fans in general are disgusted it is taking so long. The police and prosecutors are in a tough spot, there are actual videos but conflicting reports. What they must ultimately determine from the video body language is was it consentual as the players alleged.
Not sure why they are barred from playing but allowed to attend classes and travel with team. So this is what I am basing my opinion that Title XI is waiting

One need look no further than the Mich St situation to know they will leave no stone unturned before taking action at SLU. As the story below uncovers, MSU's problems go back several years, and now have enveloped both Izzo's and Dantonio's programs.

I agree they'll leave no stone unturned but personally I don't believe there will be any formal charges. My reason being it will be difficult to convince a jury that it wasn't consentual if the parties involved appear to be enjoying the experience. To me if it wasn't consentual there would have been obvious objections, vocally or physically, kinda open shut case. But something in those videos is not conclusive either way.
Then there are outside special interest groups pushing there agenda making it more difficult to complete in a timely maner

Avid I truly don't care about the actual situation like I said in my post. I'm just trying to help you understand what you wrote was patently incorrect. You have now tried to bend the facts and make it like what you wrote wasn't wrong by now saying "title IX is not finished or completed".
I'm going to quote what you originally wrote for the 3rd time! You said "at SLU title IX is sitting waiting out to see if there are any charges then they will take over."
That quote basically says SLU is doing nothing and waiting for the police/prosecutors to make a decision before they do anything which is absolutely untrue as you admitted in your post today. They have done a whole lot to get the Title IX case to the point where it is in the appeals process which is the polar opposite of what you said originally.
Just look at your words in BOLD and tell me how those mean the same thing!

C-Time you put your interpretation on it, thats fine its your opinion. Mine is based on talking with my SLU friends and fans I live around. To put it simply SLU title IX did a preliminary and made recommendations or demands which the Admins did not accept but gave the accused right to challenge title IX ruling, if you want to call it that. Title IX will not do anything further till the police prosecution finishes its findings. If charges are brought title IX wont have to do anything further as they will be apprehended and removed from the campus. SLU admin is giving the alleged due process till the police prosecution is finished.
Believe me if there are no charges then the full weight of SLU title IX office will kick in that is why I said and say that they are waiting in the wings. We know quite well what they are capable of and they have not yet finished their full investigation to complete their demands or recommendations. If no charges then title IX will find something to cause the accused to be disciplined by the school.
Apparently title IX findings or rulings were not sufficient enough for the accused dismissal or to be expelled.
It ain't over till its over, and its taking far too long.

Okay been gone 10 days and just got back. Apparently there was a rulling or decision made last Friday. If appeals are made by either side the results most likely wont be made till next Tuesday.
Interesting there was a survey sent to the students which is quite lengthy and if the questions are too disturbing you may opt out by clinking the "Has something triggered you?" which exits you form the survey.
Would seem as though they are trying to garner up support for their ruling which some feel will be an 18 month ban from the school and classes, and of course basketball. All opinions of course.
Some are reporting a backlash from both sides on this one. Anna Kratky Title IX coordinator is apparently the one responsible for the survey.
Here is what one student posted about the questions being asked before you even get into the questions:
" They need my age, biological sex, gender identity, race/ethnicity, sexuality, living situation, what groups I belong to, if I transferred in, GPA, missed classes, ever performed poorly on a test, etc, before ever getting to the actual survey".
Don't know if that is authentic or someone overstating. Opinion is the survey is slanted as it is offering Apple watches for anyone telling of being sexually assaulted on campus.
Many feel it is already decided and not in favor of the accused, and the survey is their way of justifying the punishment.
Either way I feel everyone involved looks really stupid in the handling of this matter.

Hold On!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did Avid Flyer just really argue with me for the last 2 or 3 days about this situation without reading all of the up to date news articles that I linked!
And now he has gotten home and talked to his "sources" which have now confirmed what the Post Dispatch said days ago. OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you can make a post on here you can probably click on the links to your hometown paper and actually figure what is actually happening!!!!

So lets put this to rest and concentrate on the game itself. SLU had a terrible start to their season and are 2 -4 at home in the A-10. Travis Ford was looking for a return to top tier basketball with his incoming recruits and transfers but was blindsided by the allegations against 4 of his players.
SLU had to move forward not knowing if any of the four would be able to rejoin the team. As the season progressed it was obvious they missed those four players. However their starters have come together and have won 2 of their last three the lone loss to VCU in overtime at home.
Jordon Goodwin is the reigning A-10 co rookie of the week. Davell Roby has hit the 1000 club and are solid players. They will be a hand full to deal with and depending on which Dayton Flyers team shows up it could be a barn burning going down to the wire or another embarrassment.
This is SLU's annual white out and should have a full house. Lets hope the flyers are up to the task and stay focused bringing home the W. Next 4 games will define this years team, 3 on the road all against formidable opponents. Need to snatch the SLU game to stay above .500.

I see the question mark so has Trump rescinded the "Dear Colleague", if so that would be great but haven't heard it officially. It needs to be if not already done. Certainly possible as I don't follow the media much anymore.

8-0 run and a 10 point lead. Still early but Crutcher already with 8 points.

Good job getting #2 on Goodwin. Let’s go ahead and guard Johnson at the arc now.

SLU is one of the better teams in division I in getting to the line.
That being said, Goodwin channels his inner Crosby and get rewarded with FT's.

UD's Foul Trouble With Their Bigs

The announcers were correct on the Kostas call: the shot was short so the shooter must’ve got fouled...except he didn’t

And no other Flyer has drawn a whistle. 6 fouls, 3 players. SLU just drew their 4th. And now, their 5th (and I hope I don’t need a 5th before this one is over).

You are in trouble when Svoboda is in the game
Officials have made more than a few homer head scratching calls
Bess is having career game
Lucky to be down 6

What are you talking about. He took a wild shot because he was getting fouled. You either don't call a foul or it is a shooting foul.
You don't get to retcon what kind of foul it was after because you're embarrassed you blew the whistle.

Refs, rebounds and turnovers really killed us in the first half. Two of those can be fixed in the second half. Let’s hope that’s enough to pull off a win.

SLU's strength on Offense
is their dribble drive to the hoop and rebounding. They are not good shooters. They are perfect for playing changing zones against them. It will also keep Landers, Cunningham and Antetokounpo on the floor a little longer. Half time adjustments anyone?

Granted, these stripes should be in a zoo somewhere, not on a basketball court. But Darrell was almost sideways to the basket when he went into his 2nd jump on that play. And then he threw the ball straight up instead of toward the hoop. He should have “sold” it better.
That said, parts of this game look like Space Jam with all the unwhistled contact that SLU is getting away with.

Their aggressive defense is pushing us way out. We need Josh in the high post distributing or taking what they give him. Landers cutting into the low post. Wait, we can't do that because they are on the bench!
And take care of the ball.

Turnovers and fouls the key in the first half. We stopped moving the ball around, lazy passes, not knowing where to go. We should be up big in this game.

They are beating us with energy alone. Ball movement and changing defenses getting open threes and points off our turnovers.

UD Must
get out of man defense with our bigs and rebounders in foul trouble. They will shoot layups the whole game.
