Manhattan Game Thread
Hope everyone has a nice and safe Thanksgiving... The boys are back at it at 2 PM on Saturday vs. Manhattan... Tough Break for us, George Beamon scored 29 in his 1st game of the year tonight vs. Hofstra (injury). Should be an interesting matchup.
Potential Starting Lineup:
G RaShawn Stores 5’11” 190 SO
G Michael Alvarado 6’2” 180 JR
G George Beamon 6’4” 175 SR
F Emmy Andujar 6’6” 205 SO
C Rhamel Brown 6’7” 230 JR

either 1-2 or 1-3. Bad loss to Harvard.
another many point loss to someone good.
Then they beat HOfstra , once they got Beamon back.
let's do this!!!

Manhattan won 6 games in 2010-11 and 21 last year. They are one of their conference favs. IIRC, WH predicted them to win this game in his preseason prognostications.

Go Flyer, Keep Beamon under control and take the win. I think Oliver is the key to winning this one.

Defense is holding up pretty well.
Flyers looking great so far, except for Pierre misshandling the ball a couple of times under pressure. Hopefully it's just early game jitters.

Game on pace for combined 70 turnovers. Not handling transition from pressure back, half and three quarter court to zone well at all. Post players avoiding contact and playing soft. 30 - 27 UD.

If not for turnovers and poor shooting we would be up a dozen or more. Shot selection has been pretty good, hopefully the shoots will start falling next half. Turnovers are momentum killers, we need to try to cut down on those, but we're young and susceptible.

Manhattan helped by committing 13 turnovers of its own. We shot 48% (50% for 3s) but only hit half our free throws. I kept thinking about our Thanksgiving game last year and got nervous.

If UD takes the ball up inside the way they did in the first half, then the poor shooting in the last 15 minutes of the half will continue. You can't shy away from the contact in the double team trying to contort your body and convert by putting spin on the ball. That's for the guards. Go up strong and through the contact. Finish.
And the guy receiving the ball below the foul line has to do something from there, not look to kick it to Price or Dillard 25 feet from the basket. The frosh are showing they are just that.

No idea how to play against the zone. Benson is totally ineefective up high. Robinson is weak in the short corner and Oliber can't atretch the wing. Throw passes in a crowd in the lane.

It seems as if this conversation starts around this time every year. I guess you take every win you get but at some point in time consistency in doing things well leads to a successful season and an invitation to the all important tournament. I believe that due to our extensive use of freshman we might be prone to games like this one. We need to improve in a number of areas prior to the opening of the A-10 part of the schedule. I'm optimistic!!!!

This may be an important win in that it could well be a bad loss that hurts at the end of the season. I kept thinking about a Thanksgiving jinx because of Buffalo last year. As a result, I am happy to mark this as a W. Remember how we felt a year ago?

This is a young team that is a work in progress. You have to like the athleticism of the young guys. There were positives and negatives. If we had hit our FTs the game would have taken on a different perspective. Manhattan is a decent team. They play very differently than most of the teams we will see.

If I read the stats right, we only had 2 points off the bench. Wow.
Hard to believe that Robinson, Scott, Price, Gav, and Derenbecker would have zero field goals over the course of an entire game.
There is one thing I don't understand. Our bigs seem obligated to rush out beyond the 3 point line on defense. It seems like they have been coached to do that, then they frantically try to rush back to guard the big man they abandoned under the basket. They got away with it a dozen times or more today, but got burned more than a few times underneath. Some disciplined opponent is going to exploit that against us.
What's the point of having a big man out at the 3 point line in the first place if his man in under the basket? There must be a reason. It doesn't seem like carelessness, it looks intentional. Does anybody who has played have an idea of why that would be a strategic coached intentional plan?
Anyway, Manhattan is a good team with Beamon healthy. I'll take the win. hopefully the Jaspers will be in the top 100 by year end.

Manhattan is an awkward team to play with that matchup zone.
I was worried pregame that Brown would torch the Flyers inside but he was not a huge factor. He was the kind of player that killed the Flyers last year.
Both Dillard and Oliver logged 38 minutes.

I also can see why Manhattan struggled without Beamon. They really don't have anyone else that can create their own shot.

Having a big hedge the ball screen is something everyone (or almost everyone) playing man does. It is what the bigs are taught hedge and recover. If you don't do it you will get killed on ball screens because the man defending the dribble either goes under and gives up a three or they hug the drinnlers hip and get beat to the basket when they cut odd the screen.
Some will try to switch everything but then you have a guard on a big and a big on a guard. Pitt tried that against UD and UD just isolated Roberts on the big. You don't want Benson guarding Beamon.

florida won 2 national championships because they were able to switch their bigs(Noah and Horford) onto guards. However, most teams can't switch everything but with Oliver playing the 4 the Flyers can switch a lot of high ball screens.

The bigs are out there because the guy they are guarding has gone high to set a pick. Our guy hedges off the pick so the guard doesn't get an open look or a clear path to the basket, but he has to recover to his man quickly to prevent the pick & roll. I thought the Dayton players did an excellent job with the high hedge - at least two forced turnovers, and no easy baskets for the Jaspers (and the call against Robinson was bogus).

Agree with Oliver. And you seldom see him hedge the screen. Not sure if that's because his defender seldom sets it, or the switch then. Would have to watch or see tape. Benson, Scott, Gavs, and Robinson are nearly always hedge and recover.
