Smile MSOC: Flyers Blitz Bonnies 6-2 on Adjei Hat Trick

The Dayton Flyers men’s soccer team ended a three-game losing skid with a resounding 6-2 victory over the St. Bonaventure Bonnies on a chilly Saturday evening at Baujan Field. Kingsford Adjei scored a hat trick while Toluwalese Oladeinbo added a brace on the service from four Jonas Fjeldberg assists as Dayton improves to 6-7-0 (2-2-0). The Bonnies remain winless in the A10 and fall to 2-9-0 (0-5-0).

Three consecutive defeats including a pair of gut-wrenching overtime losses to George Mason and VCU had the Flyers reeling as the Bonnies came to town for UD’s first home match in two weeks. The recent results were additionally frustrating considering how well Dayton played both leading up to the losing streak and how many chances they had to win those same matches in regulation. Looking to sharpen the fine details and finish chances around the opposing goal box, the bottom-dwelling Bonnies came at the perfect time for UD to get back to winning ways.

The opening minutes of the match were favorable to the Flyers as cooler temperatures provided the first autumn-like feel at Baujan Field. While fans were bundled up with jackets and scarves for the first time, UD unbundled their frustration of the past two weeks by finding the back of the net just two minutes after kickoff as Toluwalese Oladeinbo put the Flyers up 1-0.

The Flyers didn’t waste time admiring their early lead. Jonas Fjeldberg almost made it 2-0 about five minutes later on a cross in the box that bounced off the post after an initial defensive save by the Bonnies. Just 10 minutes into the match, UD was in firm control of things while SBU had trouble generating a push into their offensive half of the field.

The Bonnies dodged a bullet in the 13th minute when they were whistled for a handball in the box after a Flyer shot on frame. Fjeldberg’s PK attempt to the lower right post was stopped however as SBU kept the score at 1-0.
SBU found a bit of possession as the half continued and created their most dangerous chances on counter-attacks into UD’s defensive half. Goalkeeper Federico Barrios – back after a one-game hiatus for a red card in the GMU match – had to exit his box on a couple occasions to turn away SBU breakaway opportunities.

Conversely, UD continued to counter when the opportunities were there. Dayton eventually found the back of the net in a two-minute span to put serious distance on the Bonnies. Oladeinbo finished a loose ball directly in front of the box for a first half brace after Fjeldberg headed a cross on goal. Less than a minute later, Laurel Aug ripped a far-post shot from outside the box that found the lower right corner of the net to make the score 3-0 in the 21st minute.

Things only got worse for the Bonnies as Fjeldberg was once again part of the scoring sequence, earning his third assist of the first half with a slotted ball directly in front of the box to Kingsford Adjei who finished the one-timer for the 4-0 lead in the 25th minute.

The Bonnies caught a break in the 39th minute when the Flyers were whistled for a hand ball inside their own goal box, resulting in a PK that SBU finished off to trim the lead to 4-1. The last five minutes of the half were evenly played as both teams had a pair of quality chances to add additional goals on the scoreboard, but intermission arrived with the score remaining at 4-1.

Halftime stats were dominated by UD in shots 17-8 – including 11-3 on frame -- while corner kicks were 5-2.

The second half took a while to produce much in the way of fireworks as both teams battled for possession in the first minutes after the restart. SBU created some space and had chances to push forward, but couldn’t generate quality shots on goal to challenge Barrios in front of the net. Dayton almost found the net on a Fjeldberg shot but he was denied by the post to save SBU’s bacon. He’d make up for it just moments later however by feeding Adjei with another well-slotted feed across the box for his fourth assist of the night as Adjei finished it far-side to put the Flyers up 5-1 in the 53rd minute.

Dayton had more opportunities to add to their lead, but the Bonnies would eventually cut the deficit with a nifty roll-back/cut-back inside the box that resulted in a shot that beat a Flyer defender and Barrios to the far post to cut the lead to 5-2 in the 70th minute. The good vibes didn’t last long however as Adjei earned the hat trick just one minute later to make it 6-2 with nearly 20 minutes left to play.

There were enough Flyer scoring opportunities over the remainder of the match to add to the goal total, but UD couldn’t finish additional chances and as the clock continued to wind down, the air had been completely taken out of the match anyway. A flurry of UD corner kicks in the final three minutes salted the game away.

Overall match stats favored the Flyers in shots 33-14 (15-5 on frame) and corner kicks 13-4. The total shots and corner kicks were both season-highs.
The six goals were the most scored by UD this season, surpassing the five-goal performance against Detroit. It was also the most goals surrendered by the Bonnies; they lost 5-1 to #15 Florida International in their season opener. The last time UD scored six goals was against Oakland in a 6-2 victory in 2017.

Fjeldberg was terrific all match and did a great job of opening up the field for others. Oladeinbo and Adjei were clinical in front of the net, while the central mids controlled the run of play and did well to transition the Flyers from defense to offense. Barrios surrendered the PK and was hung out to dry on poor defending on the second goal – so neither were a result of shaky hands in the box.

Oakland visits for a rare mid-October non-conference matchup as the Flyers host the Golden Grizzlies on Tuesday Oct. 15th. Kickoff is 7pm.
