Staff deserves a lot of credit for getting UD in this position against power conference schools with a kid who has no connection to Dayton/UD

I saw him with Greer, Matos, jordy, Cohill, and Johnson at potbelly’s on brown on Saturday. Not gonna lie I thought he might just have been greer’s Nephew or something because he looked very young. 6’6 would be very generous right now but based on how thin he is I would say he is probably not done growing yet and hopefully will be able to put on some muscle soon

According to Rivals, Gaines’ primary suitors include Penn State, Nebraska, Georgia State, Houston, Middle Tennessee and possibly Georgia. They don’t even list Dayton, so take it all with a grain of salt.

Dont get wound up by who we chase. Get excited about who we sign. Big difference. Nearly everyone you chase ends up elsewhere unless you are Duke or Kansas and hand select kids with what amounts to an RSVP.

True, but eventually, we have to sign someone besides Frazier. Hopefully Ambrose and a PG.

Blue Raider Hoops Report
@MTSUHoopsReport
·

The word is Christian Fussell (
@C_fuss22
) is announcing his college decision tomorrow. He is between MTSU, VCU, and Dayton. 6’10 player from the Atlanta area. Would be a great first get for the Blue Raiders’ 2020 class.
Probably headed to MTSU... Seems like after the OVs both VCU & UD basically said hold off or no lol... but we'll see

Looks like a shooter. Has put up big scoring numbers in a relatively tough NYC league.
Best I can tell, Brea's only been on one visit, and that was to Dayton. Seems to bode well for an impending decision.
Did some more digging. Brea played for the Dominican Republic at a FIBA event this summer (appears to have been a Latin American event). In five games, he posted 9.2 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 2.8 apg. Shot 9/22 (41%) from three. The team finished fourth, losing to the Bahamas in the third-place game (to give you a sense of the competition). Young guy, birthday is November 2002, meaning he wouldn't turn 18 until the start of his freshman basketball season.

No, expect it soon though. Looks like they shot a video last night, him doing some shooting/dunking. Probably editing it yesterday and today. Of course, it could be only that and not an announcement video but we'll see.

Happens a lot now with kids doing 1-5 minute videos for their announcement. They announce they are announcing and then the video isn't ready in time and they move it back a day or 2. I wouldn't worry much yet. If we go a week with no word, then I would worry.

Everyone would love another Obi, but Obi had a late growth spurt, he also had some academic struggles so many P5 schools couldn't recruit him if they wanted to (not sure how much interest he had from any P5 school, I just know that many don't allow partial qualifiers). Is he a late riser? Sounds like he's a great shooter, which always plays.

Based on this recent thread from a UCONN board, it appears that Brea has attracted interest - although perhaps not offers - from a number of big-name schools, including UCONN and some other Big East teams.

I think he's 2020 but very young. On social media, Koby added in "announcement coming soon" and included the logos of Princeton, Maryland, Seton Hall, Virginia, Temple, Tulane, Illinois, Fordam, St. John's, UMass, Iona, South Carolina, LSU and UConn amongst others.
Koby is getting some serious looks. Some of those may be for 2021 vs 2020 but the kid is talented. Hope we get him.

I know it’s early yet in AG’s tenure and all coaches have misses but so far I love the guys AG has brought in especially given the late start his first year. Until that changes, I’m trusting AG over any ranking systems/sights or offers.

So, if AG snags Brea, would it be fair to assume Gaines (pg) and Keon Ambrose (stud PF) are the top two targets remaining? Asked another way, does signing Brea mean they don’t think Ambrose is still a target? Still need a PG!!

Very good comparison... I would probably say Koby is a better shooter while Naz was the better athlete around the rim
As a junior, he might be one of Washington's better players this year

Grant has been pretty good at talent evaluation. Had a couple duds, but overall Ive been quite happy with the skill sets he's brought in. Trusting his crystal ball.
From what it appears, AG likes long wingspan guys who are lanky and athletic. Temple Owl kind of players come to mind. Not that we'll ever play a 2-3 matchup zone, but playing Temple was like playing 5 albatrosses on the court. We haven't been very good on defense for a lot of reasons, but I think AG wants more length to cover the court and muck up passing lanes. Chatman supposedly has arms that go on forever.

No, sir. We lose two seniors (Mikesell and Landers) but we currently have two open scholarships. Obi Toppin is almost certain to leave after this season. So we probably will have three more spots to fill.
I’m not 100% sure what our strategy is, but ideally we would add a point guard and at least one guy who can play the 4 spot.
4-star Keon Ambrose-Hylton visits Arkansas this weekend and will visit USC and Alabama as well before deciding in November. He seems to be our top target, so I would think we would more or less “hold” a spot for him as long as we need.
I would guess we might add two more to the class of Frazier and Brea and hold one more spot (we’ll call it Obi’s spot) for the best available player and/or keep it open in case of a mid-season transfer, international prospect, or the like.

After an unprecedented run of years with little/no depth, and with the projected strength of this year's team being not only the talent but the depth, it's easy to forget that we still have two open scholly's available...in addition to the Mikesell and Landers.

No doubt the coaching staff holds a spot for Ambrose. He'd be a big-time get, but it's hard for me to get too excited when going up against Musselman at Arkansas, Oats at Alabama and the boosters of USC. That'd be a heckuva pull if Grant can land him.
I think recruiting is moving fairly slowly this year due to the current composition of the roster. There's a lot of talent and not a lot of available playing time evident. In particular, I think getting a PG in this class will be tough, considering any 2020 PG would have to sit behind both Crutcher and Chatman his freshman year. I think you can sell a top-flight PG by pointing toward the possibility of 10-15 minutes a game during an apprenticeship year as a freshman. It's hard to imagine that type of time would be available, and no doubt opposing coaches are using that against the staff.
One player I remain excited about is Tony Sanders. Fits the Grant mold - long and bouncy - has some good offers (FSU, Georgia, South Carolina, Xavier) and seems interested. Smart guy too (UPenn and Yale offers), and I think he'd fit in well around here.

Re Ambrose...three football schools vs Dayton...basketball #1, fan base, resources, ncaa chances. Unless someone else flanks in, big picture I like our chances. Jordan Sibert says...go to UD.

I like Sanders too, but we need a 4 and likely need a PG. I don't see AG wanting to turn over 2021 to a Freshman like he was forced to do with Crutcher. So unless you are going to bring in a transfer who sits 2020 and takes over in 2021, you really need a PG for 2020. The real trick will also be what happens in 2022, because we're after some pretty big names locally, including the recently offered Paul MacMillen IV and Sean Jones, both who are going to be big time talents. Stack up too much ahead of them with little prospect for PT and you may limit your chances.

I find this a bit confusing. He’d taken an official visit to Dayton, I thought, but no comment from him or anyone. Did he renege on a commitment elsewhere? Or by reopening his recruitment, does that just mean he’s thrown out the net hoping to snag more suitors? Clearly seems as if he’s moved on or we moved on ... or both.

Gaines I would bet is trying to wait for bigger offers in the spring
I'd think the play would be to try to land a couple transfers in the spring to make the transition from the junior class easier

I think you're probably right. Gaines has probably gotten looks from bigger programs and (smartly, if he wants to go bigger) decided to wait it out as a second or third wave of offers seem to go out after the New Year.
It could also have been a pass by Grant. That seems to have been the case with Christian Fussell. Probably not fair to make any assumptions, but Ohio State football recently passed on a visiting prospect because he didn't fit the team vibe.
It hasn't been a banner recruiting year, but I do really like Frazier and Brea. It's not hard to see where they fit in or how their skillsets translate. Here's hoping they can reel in the big fish, Ambrose.

Sorry for the late Thank U! Been out of touch after the posted question.
I forgot we were holding 2 Schollies back ... I was focused on Trey and Mikesell being in their last year.

With the decommits from the coaching carousel (maybe bigger than normal from the NCAA fallout) and late bloomers if UD puts together a big season and Obi gets national visibility then UD could be positioned to be a stronger sell in the spring than Grant's first couple years.
NCAA appearance, Obi heading towards a 1st round pick and positive momentum would be a real asset in recruiting next spring

Would we really want a 5 man class is Obi goes pro? I could see them going with 4 and banking a scholly for the next year or in case a potential transfer opens up.

Looks as if Keon Ambrose-Hylton will take his final official visit this weekend, this time to Alabama. He visited USC this past weekend. Don’t know if there’s much to be said about reading the Twitter tea leaves, but he was most effusive about Arkansas after his visit there. In this report after his USC visit — https://bustingbrackets.com/2019/10/...-keon-ambrose/ — the writer speculates that Dayton, NC State and Arkansas may have an edge over USC and Alabama, but who knows. Our best assets remain AG’s “been there since day one” recruitment efforts and proximity. Obviously Dayton is closest to home. Remains to be seen if the order of the visits plays a role, seeing as how his trip to UD was first up a month ago. The kid has kept his pledge to visit all five of his finalists. At any rate, he may make a decision next week when his visits are finished.

I think Musselman and Razorbacks are the ones to look out for here. Loads of press coverage on his visit and by the looks of it they have better facilities than I was expecting. Not sure UA would be my first choice but Musselman is an experienced Coach who can sell. Hope we get him.

Arkansas has a nice facility, but no nicer than ours. Our campus is smaller, but nicer. If he likes smaller towns, Fayetteville and that area has Dayton beat. And of course warmer weather.

Their Basketball Development Center is way better than the Cronin Center. Cronin Center is average at best when it comes practice facilities. Great arena doesn't mean great facilities.

Not sure Figgie has these stats (?) if that is what you would call it ....
So with the addition of our latest verbal RJ Blakney as a possible 3* rated player (and I realize that these star ratings mean nothing until proven on the hardwood in a D1 game/season) how is this class for 2020 shaping up as far as star power goes AND how does this match up with incoming classes from previous years?
Seems like the class with Donald Smith and the more recent Scoochie Smith had some similar power ...
I know Chase Johnson is/was a 4* but he technically isn't a 2020 team addition.
Any body have a means to provide this type of info?

UD's best recruiting class on paper may have been the HS class of 2010, which consisted of Juwan Staten, Brandon Spearman, Ralph Hill, and a tentatively unheralded Devin Oliver.

247Sports has a class calculator you can try to compare, but right now there isn't anything there yet. (Frazier hasn't been marked as being committed to UD, Brea doesn't have a profile, and Blakney is still listed as 2019)

That was a great class, but back before star ratings were a thing, the class of Donald Smith, Mike Sylvester, Jack Kill, John Von Lehman and Joe Coladarci was a goldmine. Smitty could have gone anywhere, including UCLA at the height of Wooden’s magic. Sylvester, Kill and Von Lehman were national level recruits, and Coladarci was an unpolished near 7-footer. The freshmen games back then had a buzz about them, probably similar to the Roger Brown frosh team. There were some busts, of course. No one matched Brown’s greatness, but Smitty and Sly were elite by their senior year. Von Lehman, though highly recruited out of high school, was at best serviceable in the post. Big Joe and Kill transferred out and had nothing much in the way of a career elsewhere. But as an incoming class, they would have ranked on anyone’s top 20 list.

Pat Lyons, an All-Stater out of Cleveland was the sixth member of that Donald Smith/Sylvester class. He transferred after Freshman year and never played varsity. It appeared he transferred to Cleveland State as a Pat Zlyons from CSU was an Academic All American in 1973.

Keon
If i’m Not mistaken, I believe Keon Ambrose has made all of his official visits. Perhaps someone who is more in tune with current recruiting can give us an update on his status. Is he close to making a decision? What are the odds he makes the right decision?

I would have guessed Arkansas given his twitter posts following his visit there. I guess it’s not over till it’s over, but this one will sting a little given how Grant had made him priority No. 1 and was on him first. But AG deserves credit for identifying talent early in the process. You either want to be the first visit or the last. ‘Bama being last may have been the key.

The real trick will also be what happens in 2022, because we're after some pretty big names locally, including the recently offered Paul MacMillen IV and Sean Jones, both who are going to be big time talents. Stack up too much ahead of them with little prospect for PT and you may limit your chances.

Sanders and Devin Carter are mentioned in this article as both having received offers from UD. I am not sure this quote from Sanders bodes well for UD's chances.
Meanwhile, Sanders said he has offers from Florida, FSU, Georgia, South Carolina and Dayton but will wait until April “just to see what other options come my way.”

Sorry, it was Saunders, not Sanders that committed to UC in June

2020 Keon Ambrose-Hylton down to five; sets official visits and commitment time frame
#PhenomHoops
- Ambrose breaks down each school and when he will be taking visits, as Arkansas, Alabama, Dayton, NC State, and USC all make the cut.
Read: https://phenomhoopreport.com/2020-ke...nt-time-frame/
“Dayton has been recruiting me since Day 1! I love my conversations with head coach Anthony Grant and his vision for me with the Flyers. I enjoyed my official visit and was embraced by the whole community.”

.
Back on August 9th Keon Ambrose announced his top 10 of Arkansas, Arizona St, California, Clemson, Florida, Dayton, Illinois, St. Louis, VCU and Virginia Tech. On Sept. 21st he kept Arkansas and Dayton in his top 5 and added 3 new ones in Alabama, USC and N.C. State. Following are the dates he received offers from his top five. Dayton was the first over a year ago on 10/31/18, Arkansas offered next on 8/9/19 and then the final 3, Alabama, USC and N.C. St, all offered on 9/10/19 per verbalcommits.com.
I was curious to see how the classes of Fwd's lined up for each team so I checked it out in my Athlon Sports College Basketball magazine and Dayton has the most immediate need for this 4 star No. 81 National player who is one of the top shooters in the class of 2020! He could start immediately as Mikesell and Landers graduate and Toppin will be in the NBA. 6'9" Chase Johnson will be a Junior and 6'9" Moulaye Sissoko a Soph. but he probably will back up Jordy at the center position. Arkansas will have 2 Seniors and 2 Juniors all 6'8" to 6'9". Alabama will have 5 Fwd's, 4 Seniors and 1 Soph all 6'8" and 6'9". USC graduates star Fwd, 6'11" Senior Nick Rakocevic but has two 5 star Freshman coming in this season who will be Soph's next year. North Carolina St. Fwd. 6'10" D.J. Funderburk who began his college career at Ohio St. will be back as a Senior and they will also have a 6'6" Junior and a 6'11" Soph. I know the decision won't be an easy one on Nov. 17th for Keon but I hope that the bond he has with Anthony Grant means something because our 2020 class could be one of the best ever!

Who were the recruits at the game? One appeared to be Luke Frasier, there were at least 1 or 2 others as well (could have been kids already committed for all I know)
